Retirement Plans Approved<br />

An application to build retirement homes on<br />

the former Chadwick’s site in Standish has been<br />

approved.<br />

The 1817 date stone from Chadwick’s will be<br />

preserved and affixed to the wall of an apartment<br />

building, though the building itself will be<br />

demolished. The company has served local people<br />

since opening their first premises in Standish in 1761.<br />

The nominees for <strong>Wigan</strong> Council’s Believe Sports<br />

Awards have been announced ahead of the <strong>October</strong><br />

awards ceremony.<br />

Categories include Club of the Year, Volunteer of<br />

the Year, Unsung Hero and The Deal Community<br />

Programme of the Year. Among those nominated for<br />

the latter category are 50p Thursdays at Howe Bridge<br />

Leisure Centre, which allow young people access<br />

to all facilities on Thursdays for a 50p donation;<br />

Rainbow Recruits<br />

Appley Bridge Rainbows are looking for adults to<br />

volunteer to help out at their term time weekly<br />

sessions – these take place from 4:40pm-5:40pm<br />

every Tuesday at All Saints School.<br />

Rainbows sessions are fun and friendly, working with<br />

girls aged 5-7. Interested? Call Lou on 07855 652835.<br />

Haigh Bubble Rush<br />

A family-friendly 5K bubble rush takes place at Haigh<br />

Woodland Park this month – will you walk, run, or<br />

dance your way through colourful bubbles in aid of<br />

two local charities? You’ll burst through four stations<br />

with cannons pumping bubbles into the air, and<br />

receive a medal when you cross the finish line.<br />

Proceeds raised from the event go to <strong>Wigan</strong> &<br />

Leigh Hospice, supporting local people with lifelimiting<br />

illnesses, and <strong>Wigan</strong> Warriors Community<br />

Foundation, which helps change people’s lives<br />

through community sport and education.<br />

Entry costs £20 per adult or £10 per under-16, and<br />

the event is suitable for anyone aged 3+. It takes<br />

place at Haigh Hall on Sunday, <strong>October</strong> 6 at 11am.<br />

New Car Boot Sale<br />

An indoor car boot sale will take place at Standish<br />

High School on Sunday, September 29, with the view<br />

of taking place weekly.<br />

Stalls cost £10, and can be set up between 8am and<br />

8:30am before the car boot opens from 9am-1pm.<br />
