equire a special licence to drive it. Although

there are issues to be resolved, the general

agreement of the meeting was to take the

project forward.

The Milford on Sea Minibus

is coming!

Milford really is set to get its own community

minibus in the very near future!

In July over 40 people attended a meeting

organised by the Milford on Sea Charitable

Trust. The meeting discussed what steps

were needed to set up and operate a

community minibus service, and agreed that

the aims were

• To provide a low cost community transport

service for residents of all ages living in the

parish of Milford on Sea (ie Milford,

Everton, Keyhaven, Lymore, Downton) and

local organisations that provide activities

for them

• Provide social support for residents who

have no other form of transport available

and who might otherwise become

isolated.

• Make Milford “greener” by encouraging

residents to use their cars less

Suggested uses of a minibus included use

by local organisations, either to take

members on trips or collect them for local

activities; shopping and leisure trips,

transport to and from events or activities in

the village, such as the Community Centre,

the library and lunch clubs. Use by all ages

is important. Several organisations

including the WI, Milford Primary School,

the Conservation Volunteers and the U3A

have already expressed interest.

Ivan Chandler is the enthusiastic new

Coordinator for the Project. Since the

meeting, Ivan has drawn together a “Help

Team”. The Team still needs more

volunteers. In particular people are needed

to take on publicity, and the marketing of the

service once it’s underway, and a few people

who are knowledgeable about vehicles, as

well as more drivers. If you would like to get

involved or find out more about the project,

Two years ago the Milford on Sea Arts and

Music Festival donated £4,000 towards

buying a minibus. Since then other donations

have been received or promised. Further

finance will be raised by a combination of

donations, sponsorship and grants. South

Lawn Hotel have already offered a

sponsorship arrangement, and are very

generously supporting our first major

fundraiser:

It was proposed that buying a small

8+driver used minibus was the best

strategy to start the service. Not only was

this a relatively achievable financial option

given funds already available (a minibus

might cost around £8,000 with insurance a

further £1,000 or so) but also it did not
