The GREEN CORNER This month we are focusing on a couple of projects that our Lymington group have been involved with. Abundance Lymington has been running for the last 5 years, where as the Lymington Repair Café started just this year. Both these projects are run by an active group of local volunteers who are working towards a sustainable SO41 area. Lymington Repair Café A repair café is a simple idea. It is a free meeting place that’s all about repairing things. Visitors are able to bring their broken items from home and meet up with specialist volunteers from the community who can help them. In March this year, Transition Lymington hosted the first Lymington Repair Café at the Community Centre. They were generously supported by a grant from West Solent Solar Co-op which paid for the setup costs. They were very lucky to have an incredible team of fixers – 3 sewers, 2 jewellers, 2 IT / phone / computer experts, 2 bike mechanics and 3 who could fix anything electrical. They shared their skills whilst fixing and encouraged people to help too. The fixers were all volunteers, it couldn’t have happened without them. The morning was a huge success with a constant stream of people bringing in items to be repaired. All sorts of things – from bags, necklaces and bikes to phone screens, hoovers, lamps and record players! About 200 people came and well over 50 items were repaired. There was no charge but people were able to make donations and buy tea and cake. The donations have allowed another Repair Café to take place this Autumn. The next Lymington Repair Café will be on Saturday 9 th November from 9.30am -12.30pm at Lymington Community Centre. Please come along. An Abundance of Apples Abundance Lymington was conceived by Transition Lymington as a way to share the abundance of apples and other fruits within the community. The concept involves volunteers picking apples from private gardens and then sharing the harvest between the owners, volunteers, pre -schools and other local groups. Abundance Lymington has recently expanded its horizons by sharing how we can best use the apples. Sharing Ideas • Ask a friend to help your pick your apples, and give them a share of the harvest. • Store them in trays. Keep them dry, separate with newspaper and check them regularly for disease. • Collect old plastic bottles - juice the apples and freeze the juice. Its brown, but delicious. • Give bags of apples to your friends and swap recipes with them. Please see the next page for some ideas.
