2 living life coMMunity influencer ROgER SPICER C ommunity inf luencer Roger Spicer has been a Baptist Minister for more than 30 years and saw a need for an engaging, safe, supportive venue for men and started the Halswell Menz Shed six years ago. MEEt ROgER: YOU SaW a NEED aND StaRtED a gROUP This was after the earthquake and the men of Christchurch needed a purpose and a location where they could meet other likeminded men on a regular basis. There are Menz Sheds around the world and throughout New Zealand. I wanted to start one in my area where men could participate in a variety of tasks and projects, learn new skills and build friendships all as we serve our community. WHat aRE SOME BENEfItS? The shed provides men with the chance to share resources of times, tools and their skills. We offer informal mental health and wellbeing support for those facing trauma or crisis HOW tHE SHED WORkS WItHIN tHE COMMUNItY We are able to link up skilled men with people or groups who come to us with a practical need. Finding the right people to do a job is often difficult for people or groups with limited funds and resources. Most of our work is ‘on site’ but we have done installations and clean-up work elsewhere. Men visiting the shed are not bound to participate in tasks and they come and go as they please. The shed functions as a drop in centre but with the necessary boundaries of safety. vOLUNtEER NEEDED Menz Shed Halswell is looking for a volunteer to help build outdoor toys from recycled (pallet wood) wood, mainly for preschoolers. It had started out as table, bench seat and four chairs. All the wood was rotten, and the cast iron which required some difficult welding to reconstruct it. The family had on a number of occasions insisted that Mum dump the mess, but the set was a wedding present and had significant sentimental value. The team PUBLISHER Star Media a division of allied Press Ltd PO Box 1467 Christchurch 8140 at the shed wonderfully restored the set using recycled hard-wood, some innovative metal repairs, new bolts, stain and paint. The ‘sheddies’ made a wonderful job of it and it was made ready for the funeral of her recently deceased husband and much admired by the whole family on the day. Neurological disorders pose one of the greatest global challenges of our time. By bringing together New Zealand’s best neuroscientists and clinicians, and working in partnership with the community, BRNZ aims to undertake the translational biomedical research necessary to tackle this challenge head on. the goal is to improve people’s lives through brain research and, ultimately, the wellbeing of the ageing population. www.brainresearch.co.nz 3 living life HeAltH The Dementia Prevention Research Clinic will officially opened in Christchurch 26 July – the third in a national network of clinics established by Brain Research New Zealand. With the launch of the Christchurch Dementia Prevention Research Clinic (DPRC), led by Co-Directors Professor Tim Anderson of the University of Otago, Christchurch, and Professor John Dalrymple-Alford of the University of Canterbury (UC), a wide range of New Zealanders will be able to benefit from the multidisciplinary initiative. “The Christchurch DPRC will be of tremendous value and benefit for the local community,’ Professor Dalrymple-Alford says. “It provides a long-awaited avenue for local participants to receive an unparalleled degree of detailed neuropsychological, neurological and neurobiological assessments.” The earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are insidious and notoriously difficult to detect, he says. “Multiple detailed assessments are needed. The new DPRC clinic provides a welcome focal point for these opportunities. Locals in Christchurch will be part of a national effort to better understand the risk factors and progression of dementia that aims to develop new treatments and better understand lifestyle factors that may mitigate cognitive decline.” People who experience early memory problems have the opportunity to participate in the clinic’s research on memory problems, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and may be able to join further studies and test interventions. In 2016, Brain Research New Zealand set out to establish a national network of Dementia Prevention Research Clinics, opening a clinic in Auckland, followed by one in Dunedin in 2017.
