ThreeWaystoImmediatelyImproveYourStressLevels<br />

It’s estimated that 75-90% of all doctor’s<br />

visits are due to chronic stress-related<br />

ailments.While the best way to alleviate<br />

stressistoavoidthethingsthatarecausing<br />

itinthefirstplace,it’snotsosimpletoavoid<br />

things like a demanding job or home<br />

schedule, financial troubles, and São Paulo<br />

traffic.Stressmanagementtechniquescan<br />

help us cope with these situational<br />

stressors, but did you know that there are<br />

some lesser-known physical stressors that<br />

youmayactuallybeabletoreduceoreven<br />

eliminatefromyourlife?<br />

Let’s first review what is happening in our<br />

bodieswhenwearestressed.Humanswere<br />

hard-wired to handle certain types of<br />

stressors.When we encounter a perceived<br />

threat(think:cavemanrunningfromabear),<br />

ourbodiesreleasehormonestoinitiateour<br />

“fight or flight”response (increasing blood<br />

pressure and sugars for energy, pausing<br />

other“non-essential”bodilyfunctions).This<br />

is intended to be temporary; once the<br />

perceived threat has passed, our regular<br />

functioningresumes.Butwhenstressorsare<br />

constantly present, this response remains<br />

turned “on.” These chronically elevated<br />

levels of stress hormones and constant<br />

disruptiontoourbodies’processescanlead<br />

toserioushealthproblems—auto-immune<br />

diseases, digestive dysfunction, heart<br />

disease,headaches,weightgain,andmore.<br />

The good news? Because this release of<br />

hormonesisautomatic,ourbodiescannot<br />

differentiate the types of stressors we<br />

encounter.Soifwerecognizewhatstressors<br />

we do have some control over, we can do<br />

our part to avoid them. Here are three big<br />

physicalstressorstoourbodythatyoumay<br />

notbeawareof:<br />

ToxicFood:Whatdorefinedsugar,artificial<br />

sweeteners, margarine, vegetable oils, and<br />

processedcarbohydrateshaveincommon?<br />

They are all substances we were never<br />

designedtoconsumeinexcess,astheycan<br />

cause systemic inflammation in the body<br />

(inflammation = stress). However, all of<br />

thesearequitepopularinBraziliancooking<br />

andsnacks,soreadyourlabels!<br />

ToxicExercise:AsaCrossFitcoach,itusually<br />

surprises people when I say that highintensityexerciseisnotalwaystheanswer:<br />

ifyoualreadysufferfromchronicstress,all<br />

you’re doing is keeping your hormone<br />

levels elevated. This doesn’t mean you<br />

shouldbeacouchpotato,butit’simportant<br />

tochooseanenjoyableformofmovement<br />

that will complement, not worsen, your<br />

currentstresslevels.<br />

product industry? Or that many products<br />

absorbedontoourskinorinhaledarefullof<br />

hormone-disrupting chemicals (read:<br />
