EDITOR’S NOTE
It's my birthday month and I
have been this excited about a
birthday. Well, it could
because I am closer to the big
30. I am just grateful for
every day. It's a blessing
because this means I am given
another chance to make a
choice and changes in my life.
I just want to tell you that
slowly and surely you and I
will get there. It's just a
matter of time. So, hang in
there tightly.
“When it feels like you
are not getting there
and every oneelse is,
don’t panic.”
Don't panic when it feels like
it's all passing you by. When
it feels like you are not
getting there and everybody
else is. DO NOT PANIC.
Here is a thing about God; he
never forgets. EVERYTHING
has its own time. And when
the time is right, you'll know.
Things will fall into place.
One by one. It's all coming
together for you. Now get out
there and make things happen,
knowing that things will fall
into place. Just walk in your
purpose. LOVE.A

“Although I’m young, I’m
allowed to have an opinion
and my thoughts.”
FROM CATERPILLAR
TO BUTTERFLY
Thuthuka Mthebu shares with Envy Magazine her road to stardom.
Words by: Vuyokazi Vika
If she is not already on your radar, it’s time to that.
Anyone who is familiar with the award-winning
popular TV soapie, Uzalo on SABC1, would notice
Thuthuka, who portrays the role of Nonka, a feisty high
school girl who is Sibonelo’s love interest played by
Wiseman Mncube. The 21-year-old actress, who was
born and bred in the city of gold has always been a
performer. She says that her interest in the
entertainment showbiz increased when she would visit
the WindyBrow theatre and the Hillbrow theatre
during school holidays.
“At that age, it was all just fun, it was never anything I
had imagine I'd do for a living. Never in my wildest
dreams could I have guessed that it would unfold the
way it has,” She says.
Thuthuka’s rise to fame has been a little bit like a walk
in the park, one would say her angels work over time.
The day she joined her agency, was the day she
auditioned for the role of Nonka and the rest is history.
Her dreams came true literally in a week,
“This is my first major role, so I'm constantly learning
and everyday I'm discovering all the different facets I
could explore when it comes to the performance I give.
Nonka is a relatable person, she is a strong individual
and very opinionated that's one of my favourite things
about her,” shares Thuthuka.
She is the youngest cast member of Uzalo.
Thuthuka says having to work in a
professional space, she often forgets that
she is the youngest because of the level of
respect they all have for each other’s crafts.
She works alongside very big names in the
entertainment industry, the likes of Dawn
Thandeka King and Masoja Msiza to name a
few. You would think that would intimidate a
young actress, but that is not the case with her.
“One of my highlights is definitely working on a
production with well respected names in the
industry, legends who I grew up watching, who I
today I draw knowledge from, the experience is
definitely something I do not take for granted.”
Most often than not, fame at times does get the
better of some people, egos are boosted, but
her change has come in a positive way. Her level
of thinking has grown, she is now watchful of
what she does because a lot of people are
looking up to her.
“I'm more cognizant of the things I do and say,
because there's a lot more people watching me
now. This has required me to have a greater
sense of accountability. I hope to constantly
change and grow. I hope I'm always evolving,”
says Thuthuka.
ENVY MAGAZINE chats to SIPHOSETHU MQIKELA,
WHEN DID YOUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH
CROTCHET DESIGN BEGIN?
It all came to me after I graduated as a
journalism student, sitting at home and
being unemployed I decided it wouldn’t do
me any good sitting around at home and
be broke. So, I saw this interesting Twit on
crotchet designs which took my interest. I
sort of started teaching myself how to
crotchet, my aunt tried showing me the
basics and thanks to modern technology I
was able to watch some DIY videos on the
internet to help me perfect my skill
SO, YOU’VE NEVER HAD ANY SORT OF
FORMAL TRAINING?
Yes! And I sort of fell in love with it.
WHAT WAS YOU FIRST DESIGN?
My first ever design was a blue back pack
which I advertised on Facebook, you can
imagine the surprise I got when I found a
buyer… soon after that I received orders
from several people which kind of boosted
my confidence to keep on going.
“For now, I design
(handmade) bikinis,
beanies, crop tops, sweaters.
I also make accessories
which are mainly bags, but I
still plan on making all sort
of designs in the future.”
IN TERMS OF PRICING HOW DO YOU
GO ABOUT IT?
I won’t even lie pricing is still the most
difficult part on running a business, you
get people who want to bargain with you
while some even undermine you
protesting my price range. For now, I try
to at least make profit when selling any
item.
DO YOU KEEP UP WITH THE CURRENT
TRENDS OR DESIGN WHATEVER IS ON
DEMAND?
The goal is to design unique trends while
keeping up with my clients demands, as a
designer I try to keep most of my designs
unique that will separate me from the rest of
the current trends.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE
COMING UP YEARS?
Right now, I’m more focused on building a
brand so I want people all around Mzantsi to
know and recognize me and the brand I’m
pushing then I can safely say I’m a business
woman.
FUN FACT is in the future I would like to run
my own magazine, as a journalism graduate I
feel like it would be an opportunity for me to
get an opportunity to run my own business.
ADVICE TO OTHER YOUNG GRADUATES OUT
THERE WHO CURRENTLY FACE
UNEMPLOYMENT?
Well they should know by now sitting around
and doing nothing will not benefit them in any
way. I really don’t encourage young people to
just take any job thrown their way, you will
end up depressed and miserable. Find
something that you are passionate about,
establish yourself obviously there is no way
that a person can be good only at one thing,
explore possibilities and don’t be scared to
take risks. Hard work pays off at the end black
child.
ALL THINGS
BEAUTY
WITH MIRIAM
Words by: Athabile Mrasi
1. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF
BEAUTY?
I couldn't possibly define it, I believe beauty is
being unapologetically you. It's being brazen
about loving yourself and everything that makes
you unique.
2. WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN
BEING A BEAUTY BLOGGER START?
Sometime when I was in Varsity, I used to drive
people crazy talking about all the new skincare
techniques I had discovered/ how doublecleansing
was good for acne-prone skin and a
whole lot more. I figured starting a blog would
give me a chance to talk to and interact with likeminded
beauty lovers
3. WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO BEAUTY
PRODUCTS?
This is such a difficult question, lol! This list
could go on and on and on. I will start with the
Sorbet Salon Skin 3in1 oil cleanser, my trusted
Loreal Pure Clay Blemish Rescue Mask. I always
feel like such a Smurfette when I apply it. Then
finally my Nivea Perfect and Radiant Facial
Creams.
4. ANY MORNING BEAUTY ROUTINE?
Yes, it starts with a litre of water, coffee and a
green smoothie. The rest is just the extra spice.
lol
5. WHAT'S THE ONE ITEM EVERY GIRL
SHOULD HAVE?
The one thing?! A trusted and true best friend/
or sunscreen.
6. HOW HAS LIFE CHANGED SINCE
YOU BECAME A BEAUTY BLOGGER?
Well, the path I thought I was supposed to take
is not the one I'm on now. I have stronger
views on beauty now, I've learnt a lot about this
industry and want to make sure I play my part
in making sure when I finally have kids they
are well represented.
7. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE BEAUTY
INFLUENCER?
Just one, this isn't fair. I'll give you 4 instead
(Cynthia Gwebu, Vongai Mapho, Laurina
Machite & Thandi Gama)
8. WHAT MAKES A GOOD BEAUTY
BLOGGER?
I think someone who is honest & factual!
9. PLEASE A LITTLE ABOUT
YOURSELF. WHO YOU ARE AND
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I'm one of those people that finds this question
very hard. Telling people who I am in just a few
words. I mean, I'm 27 there's a lot to share!
My name is Miriam Maulana, I am a feminist,
Zimbabwean woman who still has a lot to
unlearn and relearn. I'm beauty and natural
hair-obsessed, caffeine-fuelled daughter, sister,
friend and lover.
SOSO RUNGQU
CELEB PIECE
SOSO CALLS OUT WOMEN WHO
HATE ON OTHER WOMEN.
“You must love yourself, so you can love and celebrate others.”
Words by: Athabile Mrasi
How many times have you heard about
women putting each other down? It is
one of the most shameful things we can
do to one another. Without pointing
fingers at men, women need to take a
good look at what they are feeding
each other.
Soso Rungqu, who is known for playing
an opinionated welder Morongwa Kau
on the SABC3 soapie Isidingo calls it as
it is. She explains why women put each
other down instead of building each
other.
“People don’t want something good
happening to other people other than
themselves. Honestly, women are
always full of nonsense and hate. And
the reason behind that is insecurities,
jealousy, and hate," explains Soso.
Even though she has experienced hate
from other women, and she is fine with
it. “I can’t change that there are girls
who do not like me. They look at you
like, who do you think you are to be
doing this. One thing I told myself is
that you do not need anyone’s
approval.” Says Soso.
Soso adds that the solution to women
to women hate is self-introspection
and that if women do not find a way
to work hand in hand together, men
will easily illtreat them. “The solution
is self-introspection. You must love
yourself, so you can love and
celebrate others. Otherwise, men will
easily treat us the way they are doing
now. There has to be unity with every
woman, we cannot just depend on
men to love us.”
One thing that keeps Soso grounded is
her humility. “Just be kind to yourself
and others because everybody is going
through something,” says Soso.
When she is not busy working, Soso
focuses mainly on her healthy lifestyle.
“I play tennis and squash for fitness
purposes, to distress, as well as
socializing. Sometimes I have my
meeting over a game of tennis.”
Soso shares a little about her character
and what to expect. “Morongwa is
strong and does not take nonsense from
anyone. But now we are going to see a
different side of her. I mean right now
she is trying to be a better person.
People should just stay tuned. It will be
interesting,” shares Soso. ENVY MAGAZINE 26

Words by: Athabile Mrasi
1.HAS PRESENTING ALWAYS BEEN
SOMETHING YOU WANTED TO DO?
I have always had a flair for communicating
with people and building those special
connections with them. When I was younger,
I expressed a lot of this through acting at
school level and at that point I knew that I
wanted to work in the media space. Over
time, I developed a liking for presenting and
quickly found myself on radio, and now TV.
So, yes, I have always had a very keen
interest for presenting.
2.HOW IS THE ATTENTION, NOW THAT
YOU ARE A PRESENTER ON SOUTH
AFRICA'S FAMOUS MORNING SHOW
"EXPRESSO"?
It's been so overwhelming. Nothing like I
thought it would be. Everywhere I go I have
people showing me love, which is heartwarming.
3.WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT YOU
LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Expresso Morning Show is such an important
part of hundreds of thousands of people's
lives in South Africa. There is so much to love
about it purely just based on this fact. We get
to set the - tone for the day for so many people
and bring such inspirational TV to their
screens daily that leaves them feeling - so
good - I love that!
4.THE SHOW REQUIRES YOU TO LOOK
GOOD ON SCREEN, HOW IMPORTANT IS
IT FOR YOU OUTSIDE WORK?
I am committed to looking good as much and
as often as I can help it. I believe that it is an
outward expression of how you feel, and
sometimes how you want to feel on the
inside. It's very important.
5.YOU HAVE SO MUCH STYLE, WHAT
MOTIVATES YOUR STYLE AND WHO IS
YOUR STYLE ICON?
Thank you ;)
I don't really have a specific style icon. My style
is generally inspired by how I feel. I often stick to
clean, classic looks. That's my philosophy - don't
try to complicate it. I try to always keep it simple
but still expressive.
6.YOU ARE AN ENTREPRENEUR, TELL US
WHAT IS THE MAIN KEY INTO BECOMING
THE BEST ENTERPRENUER?
I am not in any way or form an expert on
entrepreneurship, but I can confidently say that
passion has been the core driver for me in
entrepreneurship. I am fuelled by taking on
projects that excite me and make me feel good.
If you're lacking in passion, you'll find that the
work you do isn't delivered with love and for me -
then it's pointless.
7.WHAT BUSINESS DO YOU DO?
I run a brand consultancy called The Drawing
Board Brand Consult. We help brands make
sense to their consumers through a range of
communications services. I am also very
passionate about the media space and am
currently working on a few media platforms.
8.AND
C
LASTLY, WHAT IS THE MOST
IMPORTANT THING ABOUT BEING
SURROUNDED BY YOUR FAMILY?
Family for me is so important. They really help
ground me. Doing the type of work that I do can
be overwhelming, you're constantly having to
give off of much of yourself, my family keeps me
grounded. They are a sanity unit for me. It's
wonderful to be surrounded by people who love
you consistently every day and with whom you
can share your love as well as your wildest
dreams, hopes and fears.
THRIVING AGAINST
ALL ODDS
“Eventually I found my strength through God who
re-wrote my life.”
By: Vuyokazi Vika
When life becomes hard, beliefs and
values can be tested. Sometimes before
you reach the light you must walk through a
dark tunnel. Dr. Zimkhitha Soji (26), from
Mount Coke in the Eastern Cape, is living
proof that anything is possible if you set your
goals and remain disciplined in the process.
Her disadvantaged upbringing led to her
several failed suicide attempts. At a very
tender age, Dr. Soji had to learn to be
responsible for her family due to forced
circumstances. She is part of the growing
statistics of a generation subjected to
financial instabilities, as a result of broken
marriages with a dead-beat father and
unemployed mother. That forced her to
focus her mind on ways to re-script her
family’s situations.
She had to sacrifice her childhood and
become an adult sooner than other kids her
age. Seeing her two younger siblings and
mother, who was shuttered by her divorce
broke her heart. “I would shed a tear or two
every night; wake up in the morning
pretending to be the happiest kid on earth
that did not help me instead I bottled up
anger inside and that resulted in me being a
very sensitive child. So, I decided to be open
about my personal life so that anyone going
through a similar situation could find the
strength and the will to carry on,” says Dr.
Soji.
Picture: Dr. Zimkhitha Soji
Education became her own key to success. After
passing her matric in 2009 and deciding to study
Agriculture, she became obsessed with Animal
science in which she took it as her major.
“I loved and enjoyed every moment of it, found a
specialization area. I want to farm animals so that I
can produce meat at the end of the day. I mean
what’s a meal without meat, right?”
Dr.Soji was sure one of the most bright students.
Her background was her motivation. After
graduating Bachelor Science and Masters’
degree in Agriculture (Animal Science) both with
Cum Laude at the University of Fort Hare she
went back to her former high school to be a
motivational speaker for the pupils, the focus of
her speech being that ‘it is possible’.
She is amongst the top-rated students in Animal
Science not only in the University of Fort Hare but
entire South Africa.
Dr.Soji believes that education pays and it can
change one’s life positively. “Regardless of
whatever situation one is going through, your
academic focus should not be shifted,” she says.
Passing with Cum Laude in degrees (Master of
Science and Bachelor of Science) both
culminated into prestigious awards, her being
recipient of the South African Society for Animal
Science (SASAS), Merit Award for being the best
Animal Science student in South Africa for the
BSc Agriculture degree in the year 2014, also
being the recipient of the SASAS bronze medal in
2016 for a meritorious dissertation (Masters) and
scientific publications relevant to research in the
field of Animal Science.
Though challenges arose with
lecturing students of the same age,
they weren’t that major. She
became a supervisor for 6 students
for their BSc final year seminars
and projects. Amongst over fifty
students in her class 4 of her
students managed to make the top
4 in both semesters with
distinctions. “They call me Miss
Soji or Sisi Soji. The smiles and
appreciation they showed was
overwhelming, they would come to
me and enquire about anything
because I learned to understand
them at the level, they are in.”
“What is
stopping you
from being
another
Zimkhitha Soji?”
Not having your parent believe in you could be the most
discouraging thing for the child. Her father always did not see
anything special about her while the community and her
teachers anticipated greater things coming her way. “My father
would say, what is so special about this child that I have to
waste my money, she will remain in rural schools,” shares Dr.
Soji.
She made him chew his own words by her
achievements she is now a Ph.D. graduate in
Animal Science.
Dr. Soji says youth empowerment is very
important to her because regardless of your
upbringing, what you choose to be is what will
ultimately be your destiny.
“All these kinds of people need empowerment,
empowerment is not only for people who are
struggling or suffering from something but for
everyone who wants to make a change in life.
What is stopping you from being another
Zimkhitha Soji? Stand firm and be proud of
yourself. Don’t be discouraged, endure and cry
if needs be, but no matter what never lose
focus,” she says. ENVY MAGAZINE 34
HAIR
KEEPING IT REAL WITH
YOUR CURLY KINKS
Words by: Abongile Ndevu
1. CUSTOMIZE YOUR HAIR ROUTINE.
Sometimes using the prescribed use on
some products doesn’t always work so if
need be go ahead and use the whole
coconut oil bottle to keep your hair strands
moisturized. Watch some YouTube
tutorials featuring other naturalists that
have similar strands to yours. And once
you have found your perfect formula, stick
to it.
2. GO EASY ON THE HEAT.
Try to rely on heat-free tools such as
hair rollers or Flexi rods to create
curls and wrap the hair nightly to
maintain the style. The other
technique is usually letting your hair
dry naturally which you could try
because heat is regarded as one of the
biggest damagers of hair especially
when going natural.
3. GIVE YOUR HAIR A BREAK.
As much as braiding your hair or
putting on weaves is always great
because you have less stress on styling
your hair if left too long they can add
tension to the hair fiber leading straight
to breakage. Try not wearing braids for
longer than ten weeks and hair
extensions should try to be less than
three months at least.
4. KEEP THE SCALP CLEAN.
When you have a protective style in try
cleansing the scalp by using a light
coating of coconut oil, do not use hair
grease on your scalp as it can clog pores
and hair follicles, making it difficult for
water and other moisturizers to
penetrate both your hair and scalp
which can result in breakage
