Vintage vibe
THERE’S A SEVENTIES VIBE RUNNING THROUGH THIS SEASON’S COLOUR PALETTE -
AND WE’RE HEAD OVER HEELS FOR RUST, SAYS AMY NORBURY
IT’S not just vintage fabrics such as shearling and
corduroy which have taken over the catwalks this
season; the autumnal colour palette for 2019 has a
decidedly retro feel to it too.
Yellow shades - particularly mustard - as well as every
iteration of camel, tan, beige and brown add up to
a smorgasbord of rather Seventies hues, but it’s the
deep red-orangey rust shades which are our pick for
the season.
The must-have update from perennial autumn
favourites burnt orange and deep burgundy, rust is
having a fashion moment - and it’s easy to see why.
A perfect partner to every neutral under the sun,
this eminently wearable shade suits just about every
skin tone, adding just enough colour to make an
outfit ‘pop’ without ever feeling too overwhelming or
dominant.
Evoking a nostalgic mood, rust was first spotted
on the AW18 runways, with a series of prominent
designers infusing their collections with the vintage
shade, from subtle prints to head-to-toe tonal
dressing. And it’s cropped up once again all over
this year’s catwalks; our favourites being Lanvin’s
gorgeous satin blazer (teamed with a plethora of
checked layers for a seriously heritage country vibe)
and with OTT ruffles on Roksanda’s statement tiered
dress.
The best bit about this trend? Anything goes, from
all-over tonal looks to a statement rust shoe or bag.
For an easy in, opt for workhorse separates; a floaty
blouse or a neat sweater can be dressed down with
denim or paired with a pencil skirt or tailored
trousers for prim and proper office chic, while
oversized knits and boxy T-shirts in the rich, earthy
hue offer a trendy twist on casual cool.
Be it animal motif or florals, rust is also combining
with prints for the season ahead. Leopard midi skirts
are given a new lease of life with terracotta tones,
complemented to perfection with cream knits and
ankle boots.
Make a style statement by embracing rust from head
to toe, or for extra impact eschew safe tan and camel
in favour of rust for outerwear; a shearling-lined rust
leather biker jacket is top of our wardrobe wishlist
for AW19.
