Contributing Editor
Michelle Fadeley, a Joliet
resident, announced
her intention to run for
the 37th District seat in
the Illinois General Assembly
during a campaign
kick-off event held
Sept. 21 at Stray Bar in
Frankfort.
Fadeley is the first Democrat
to announce a bid for
the soon-to-be vacated seat
of current State Rep. Margo
McDermed. Fadeley
joins New Lenox Mayor
Tim Baldermann and Ozinga
Vice President Tim
Ozinga, both Republicans,
as early candidates ahead
of the primaries scheduled
for March.
“I really have been doing
a lot of work in my
community with Illinois
[National Organization for
Women] and co-founding
ERA Illinois, and I was
just so inspired by all the
difference that I was making
that I wanted to take
my civic leadership up to
the next level,” Fadeley
said.
Fadeley’s past political
work should help prepare
her for her run at public
office, she said.
“It really taught me
how to actually get things
done,” Fadeley said. “It
really is a big difference
between having ideas and
then actually making those
ideas happen, and knowing
how to speak with legislators
and knowing how
to get in touch with your
constituents and really
understand what it takes
to pass good legislation in
the State.”
Fadeley said she thought
that the timing to run is
right because of the current
political climate and
that so many other women
are being recognized and
elected to public office.
“I just see a great opportunity
with this election,
and I think that we can
take it,” she said.
If elected, Fadeley said
she would push for legislation
to help the middle
class and working families
via tax breaks and reinvesting
that money in programs
that help them.
“We are supporting our
working families, so that
they can actually earn a
livable wage,” she said.
Fadeley emphasized that
she would be an advocate
for all of her constituents,
not just the ones who may
vote for her.
“I am going to be a
strong voice for them, regardless
of their political
leanings, and I am going
to be someone who gets
things done for the 37th
District,” she said.
Some former students reunite inside
Orland Park’s one-room schoolhouse
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
Sitting around a large
table Thursday, Sept. 26,
former students told stories
and giggled about
their lives at the one-room
schoolhouse in Orland
Park.
“Today was a chance
to see a few people I
haven’t seen since grade
school,” said Leon Cooper,
of Orland Park, who
brought his wife, Betty,
to introduce her to a few
of his former classmates.
“I haven’t seen a few of
these people in more than
50 years.
Leon Cooper went all
eight years of grade school
at the one-room building
now located along 151st
Street at 88th Avenue,
which now houses the Orland
Park Area Chamber
of Commerce.
While the group
swapped stories of the old
times during the late September
reunion, memories
of their favorite teacher
came to the forefront.
Tinley Park
708-444-2101
Crystal Lake
815-444-1330
“I had the same teacher
all those years,” Leon explained.
“Carolyn Johns
was her name. … She was
an amazing woman. She
did everything from stoking
the fire in the furnace
to teach us.”
“For recess, she would
put sawdust on the floor,
and we would slide
through the classroom,”
Diane Blomquist Buis, of
Bloomington, said with a
laugh.
She and her sister Lois
Blomquist White, of Oak
Forest, went to the school
together. Both came to
the event to reunite with
classmates from the 1950s
and 1960s.
Leaning back in his
chair, Dale Cooper, of
Manhattan, told of Johns’
love of telling stories
“After lunch, you could
always count on her to
revel in the storytelling
from Tom Sawyer and
Huckleberry Finn,” Dale
said.
At one time, there were
12 students in the whole
school from grades 1-8.
“At that point, there was
talk of closing the school,”
Leon said. “My dad was
on the school board. He
was a farmer. He fought
to keep the school open
because he knew the area
was growing.”
As old photos were
passed around, the group
recognized themselves in
images from a time gone
by. And the group agreed
the building has the same
wooden floor that was
there back in the 1950s.
There were more hugs
and a few tears, as people
greeted one another and
took photos.
Former students from the one-room schoolhouse in
Orland Park get together on Thursday, Sept. 26, for a
small reunion inside the building that now serves as
the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce office.
They are (left to right, top) Ted Ebelig, Bob Cooper,
Leon Cooper, (middle) Wayne Rechkemer, Dale Cooper,
(bottom) Diane Blomquist Buis and Lois Blomquist
White. Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
Dale, who attended the
one-room schoolhouse
until 1959, organized
the reunion with Wayne
Rechkemer, of Mokena.
“We thought we’d get
everyone together, share
some laughs before too
many of us are dead, and
gone to bigger and better
things,” Dale said with a
laugh.
He added, “I became a
kid again when I came in
fun to see to see older faces,
Orland School D135 Board of Education
Officials could meet the next
superintendent in November
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
The Orland School District
135 Board of Education
is set to meet its top superintendent
candidates in
early November and could
make a final decision by
December.
That was the outcome
of a special meeting held
Sept. 24, during which the
board reviewed findings of
the firm it hired to lead the
search and set a timeline
for completing the process.
As things stand, the
board is to review 12 candidates
Nov. 11, interview
the top five in-person on
Nov. 14 and, if necessary,
re-interview three finalists
on Dec. 2, extending an offer
shortly thereafter. That
schedule is tentative and
could change.
D135 is seeking a permanent
superintendent after
its last, DJ Skogsberg,
resigned in June after being
placed going on paid leave
in March. John Bryk has
been serving as interim superintendent
since and will
continue in that capacity
until summer 2020, when
the new superintendent is
set to assume duties.
Rick Mills, of Ray & Associates,
the Iowa-based
consultancy aiding D135 in
its search, started the meeting
by distributing various
materials to the board.
Those included the results
of a 33-point survey completed
by more than 500
individual stakeholders,
including parents, teachers,
administrators and a
handful of students. Also
presented were comments
made during community
forums held in recent
weeks, during which stakeholders
were invited to
describe the qualities they
are seeking in the district’s
next executive leader.
“They were all really
engaging, good conversations,”
Mills told the board.
“We got really solid participation.”
Mills summarized the
forums by saying the community
is seeking a superintendent
with a studentfirst
philosophy, excellent
communication, strong
relationship-building skills
and a collaborative mindset.
The superintendent
also must be well-suited to
working with district parents,
he said.
“There’s a strong perception
that there’s a very
active and educated parent
community here in Orland
Park,” Mills said.
Some of the top issues
the public wants to see the
superintendent address are
finances and technology in
the classroom. Stakeholders
also want to hire a candidate
who is committed
to leading the district on a
long-term basis, Mills said.
He and the board then reviewed
the survey results,
using them to create a list
of the Top 10 attributes the
next superintendent should
have.
The end result “is a great
balance and reflection of
all the groups” that took
the survey, Board Member
Dave Shalabi said.
Ray & Associates will
use those characteristics to
narrow a national field of
candidates to the dozen to
be presented to the board in
early November.
Contests
Carve a pumpkin, craft a costume, maybe win something
Bill Jones, Editor
Sharpen your knives
and strap up your candycollecting
boots, because
22nd Century Media’s
Halloween contests have
returned — less with
tricks, more with treats.
We’re once again offering
five ways to win prizes
this Halloween season
visit us online at
www.OPPrairiedaily.com
with the return of both our
costume and pumpkincarving
contests.
Details for each are below,
but questions can be
directed to Managing Editor
Bill Jones at bill@op
prairie.com or (708) 326-
The Costumes
The Halloween Costume
Contest for 2019 features a
total of three categories.
Adults 16 and older have
two ways to win, with
awards for Scariest Costume
and Most Creative up
for grabs. Children 15 and
younger, meanwhile, will
compete in one category in
which creativity is key.
We’re going to pick just
one winner across each
category from all seven
of our southwest suburban
towns: Orland Park, Tinley
Park, Frankfort, Mokena,
New Lenox, Homer Glen
and Lockport. So, your entries
need to be good.
We have just a few rules.
1) You have to be the
person in the costume. You
cannot submit for anyone
else, with the exception
of parents who submit for
their children.
2) Each person can only
submit one costume for
an entry (basically, you
cannot send yourself in
multiple costumes — pick
one), though families can
send one entry per person
from different members of
the family (and they can
be submitted together). A
group also may enter one
group costume, eligible for
one prize, as a group.
3) We understand there
may be a bit in the way of
scary imagery (such is the
nature of the holiday), but
the costumes have to be
relatively family friendly
to be considered and published.
Nothing beyond
PG-13.
4) Entries must be submitted
no later than 2 p.m.
Friday, Nov. 1, to bill@op
cannot be returned), along
with names, email addresses
and/or phone numbers,
and towns for each of
the entrants.
5) The entries will be
judged by 22nd Century
Media’s editorial staff,
with winners being chosen
based on creativity,
successful execution of an
idea, quality of craftsmanship
and consideration of
the holiday/season.
6) All entries are subject
to being published.
The prizes are detailed
in the accompanying sidebar.
The Pumpkins
Our pumpkin-carving
contest returns in 2019
with a category for adults
16 and older, as well as
one for children 15 and
younger. In both categories,
it is all about creativity
and skill.
We will pick just one
winner across each category
from all seven of
our southwest suburban
towns: Orland Park, Tinley
Park, Frankfort, Mokena,
New Lenox, Homer Glen
and Lockport.
We have just a few rules.
1) You have to be the
person who carved the
pumpkin. You cannot submit
for anyone else, with
the exception of parents
who submit for their children.
2) Each person can
only submit one pumpkin
This New Bladder Control Pill
May Replace Adult Diapers
Clinical studies show new pill may be effective enough to replace adult diapersfor bladder control; initial
usersshow dramatic reduction in trips to the bathroom, embarrassing leaking, and nighttime urgency.
Robert Ward,
Associated Health Press
AHP− Adult diaper sales are expected to plummet as results from a
clinical trial on anew, patented bladder control pill have finally been
released.
Sold under the brand name UriVarx, the newpill contains key ingredients
that keeps the bladder from releasing voluntarily, which reduces
accidents and frequent bathroom trips.
Perhaps more impressive, it also targets the tiny muscles around the
bladder, which helps the bladder to create atighter seal.
This would explain why the average UriVarx user in clinical trials
experiences a66% reduction in urinary incontinence symptoms, such as
dayand night leaking and sudden urges to urinate.
NEW DISCOVERYINBLADDER CONTROL
Until now, doctors believed itwas impossible to strengthen the muscles
that control the bladder. They are amazed to see that it can now be
done with the non-prescription UriVarx pill.
“Asyou get older, and the involuntary muscles around your bladder
weaken, you lose urinary control. With your bladder wall unable to
properly seal, you constantly leak and feel pressure tourinate” explains
Dr.Bassam Damaj of Innovus Pharmaceuticals.
“UriVarx targets the bladder muscles and help restores vital kidney
health, reducing urgency and frequency. It also helps you “hold it” for
hours soyou never have to worry about embarrassing accidents ever
again!”
FREEDOM FROM SUDDEN URGES AND LEAKS
Since hitting the market, sales for the patented UriVarx pill have
soared and thereare some very good reasons why.
To begin with, the double blind large clinical studies published in
the clinicaltrials.gov have been impressive. Participants taking UriVarx
sawastunning reduction in urinary frequency, which resulted in fewer
bathroom trips both dayand night.
Theyalso experienced a dramatic decrease in incontinence episodes,
such as leaking and bed wetting.
The active ingredients in UriVarx comes from apatented formula.
It is both safe and healthy. There are also no known serious side effects
in its history of use.
Scientists believe that the ingredients target the muscles of the bladder
to grow stronger. These muscles are responsible for keeping the bladder
tightly sealed. They also help the bladder to completely empty, allowing
bacteria to be flushed from the urinary tract.
Research has shown that as you get older, certain hormonal changes
in the body cause these muscles to shrink and become lose. This is what
causes the bladder to be overactiveand the resulting urine accidents and
why UriVarx seems to be so effectiveinthe published clinical trials.
EXCITING RESULTS FROM URIVARX USERS
Many UriVarx userssay their bladdershave neverbeen stronger. For
the first time in years, they are confident and in complete control. Adult
pads and diapersare no longer abig worry.
“After my third child, Icouldn’t control my bladder. Iwas running to
the bathroom all the time! And once Ihit my 60s it became so unpredictable
Ineeded to wear adult pads every day” explained Marie L. of
Danbury,CT.
“I was embarrassed so before going to my doctor Idecided to try
UriVarx and I’m so glad Idid! The urgency isgone and Inolonger feel
likemybladder is about to explode.Ican also “hold it” when Ineed to so
I’m no longer living in constant fear of finding abathroom.”
IMPRESSIVE CLINICAL RESULTS
The exciting clinical results published on the government clinical
website clinicaltrials.govshowthat UriVarx can strengthen your bladder
fast, significantly reducing the urine urgencyand leaks.
In anew double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study,142 men and
women with bladder control issues were separated into twogroups. The
first group wasgiven aplacebo while the other received UriVarx.
The results were incredible. The participants who received UriVarx
saw major improvements in leaking, pressure, and the urgency togo−
all without the usual side effects seen in prescription drugs! They also
reported fewertrips to the bathroom both dayand night.
Overall, the UriVarx group experienced:
• 56% Reduction in Urge Incontinence
• 66% Reduction in Stress Incontinence
• 61% Reduction in Urgency
• 33% Reduction in Frequency
• 46% Reduction in Nighttime Bathroom Trips
Additionally, atthe end of clinical trial and after seeing the results,
84% of the participants taking UriVarx said it significantly improved
their quality of life.
“The clinical findings are incredible, but people still wonder if it will
really work” explains Dr. Bassam Damaj. “It’s normal to be skeptical,
but we’ve seen thousands of UriVarx users get results exactly like the
participants in the study.It’sanamazing product.”
HOWITWORKS
UriVarx is apill that’s taken just once daily. Itdoes not require a
prescription.
The activeingredients are patented natural extracts.
Research shows that as we get older, the muscles which surround the
bladder weaken. This is caused by hormonal changes in the body that
causes the muscles to atrophyand weaken.
NEW PILL MAYREPLACE DIAPERS FOR BLADDER CONTROL: This new
patented clinically proven pill solution is now available nationwide
When they become too small and weak, they cannot seal your bladder
shut, which causes leaking, accidents, among other incontinence
symptoms.
It also prevents your bladder from fully emptying, which can result in
persistent bacterial infections and UTIs.
UriVarx’s active ingredient targets the muscles around the bladder,
making them stronger. Supporting ingredients in UriVarx support
kidneyfunction and overall urinary health.
BLADDER PROBLEMS GONE
With daily use, UriVarx can restore strong bladder control and help
users overcome leakage without the negative side effects or interactions
associated with drugs.
Leakage suffererscan nowput an end to the uncontrollable urges, the
embarrassing accidents, and enjoy anentirely new level ofcomfort and
confidence.
Orland School D135 Board of Education
FY 2020 budget with $1.51 million deficit approved
Rochelle McAuliffe
Freelance Reporter
Orland School District
135 is facing a fiscal year
2020 deficit of $1.51 million.
During its regular meeting
Sept. 16, the D135
School Board voted
unanimously to adopt its
FY2020 budget following
a public hearing. The total
expenditures for FY2020
are expected to be $82.94
million, while expected
revenues are estimated at
$81.42 million.
The budget accounts for
an increase in insurance
costs, an increase in transportation
costs, as well as
contractual salary increases
for support and certified
staff.
It also accounts for upcoming
capital projects,
such as the Liberty School
roofing project, replacing
Centennial and Prairie
schools’ playgrounds, and
the final phase of Park upgrades.
These are to be offset
by bond sale funds to be
moved into working cash
funds sometime during the
year.
Following the discussion,
the board adopted the
budget unanimously.
Board ratifies certified
staff contract
During closed session,
the School Board discussed
the certified staff contract
for the 2019-2020 school
year. When the board returned
to open session, the
contract was approved by a
unanimous vote.
“We’re rolling over
the contract for another
year,” Board President
Linda Peckham-Dodge
explained. “We’ll be entering
into negotiations in the
very near future for another
contract.”
The agreement will remain
in effect through
the start of the 2020-2021
school year.
Board evaluating residency
investigator position
The board is evaluating
whether to renew or outsource
an open residency
investigator position. The
residency investigator
conducts investigations
and inquires related to
the verification of student
residency in the district.
While there was previously
an investigator on
staff through the district,
9
the Policy and Personnel
Advisory Committee is
looking into ways to save
money.
During the Committee
meeting, Policy and Personal
Committee Chairperson
David Hodge said
that the committee did not
recommend filling the vacancy
and rather advised
for the use of freelance investigative
services on an
as-needed basis for a fraction
of the cost.
Previously, the job was a
salaried position.
Since the policy was
implemented that families
must prove residency annually,
cases have dropped
dramatically, but there is
still a need to ensure that
residency policies are followed,
according to officials.
Teens apprehended after call leads to stolen van, burglarized vehicles
Bill Jones, Editor
Three teenagers reportedly
were arrested the evening of
Thursday, Sept. 26, after police
responded to a suspicious vehicle
call in the Fountain Hills
subdivision of Orland Park that
lead to a stolen van and multiple
burglarized vehicles.
The complaint, called in just
before 10 p.m., involved four
subjects pulling door handles in
the area near 18100 Wolf Road,
and the juveniles arrived in a
van reported stolen out of Blue
Island, according to Orland Park
Police Lt. Ken Rosinski.
Police reportedly located
the suspects, and a foot pursuit
ended with the apprehension of
a 14-year-old. Two 15-year-olds
were apprehended at the Mobil
gas station at 183rd Street and
Wolf Road.
The juveniles — who were not
from Orland Park — were petitioned
to court for possession
of stolen motor vehicle and burglary
to motor vehicle, Rosinski
said.
At least five vehicles in the
subdivision were found to be
burglarized, he added.
Both the Cook County
Sheriff’s Department and Illinois
State Police assisted in
the search, with State police
watching Interstate 80 to see if
the juveniles tried to cross the
highway, according to Rosinski.
Both Cook and Will County
brought K-9 units to the scene,
in addition to Orland Park’s
dogs.
“We had several of our drones
up looking for the juveniles,”
Rosinski added. “The main why
we have drones and a tracking
K-9 is to look for subjects,
either wanted for a crime or
missing.”
Rosinski said in addition to
the three arrested, police think
at least one other juvenile was
involved.
“We do not think he is still
anywhere in the area,” he added.
A wallet, a laptop and sunglasses
were reported stolen
from vehicles, all of which were
unlocked, Rosinski said. Only
the wallet was recovered, he
added.
“We believe they were in other
Orland Park subdivisions earlier
in the night committing [burglary
to motor vehicles].”
Rosinski wanted to emphasize
that people should get in the
habit of locking their car doors to
help prevent burglaries.
6
“It’s the most preventable
crime we have from the simplest
of acts,” he said. “No one would
do this if there were no targets
to hit. No one would lose their
phone chargers, sunglasses, laptops,
wallets, change ... and most
importantly their actual vehicle
if they just locked the cars.”
Rosinski added that in a separate
incident the same evening,
another car was stolen in Orland
Park after it was left unlocked
with the keys inside it.
“We have done so much to get
the word out, but it’s happening
more than ever,” Rosinski said.
“It’s rampant.”
You walk through
an entranceway,
the glass shatters
and there is an explosion
of sound all around you.
Awesome if you’re
Stone Cold Steve Austin
on your way to a wrestling
ring during the Attitude
Era.
Not so awesome if
you’re Bill Jones, and the
glass shattering as you
walk through the door
is the growler you had
containing $175 worth of
change, and all you’re met
with is the stunned silence
of a few employees and a
woman setting up a new
account as you dumbfoundedly
hold what’s left
of the gallon-sized jug that
once held the coins now
strewn across the floor of
the bank lobby you were
moments before happy to
be entering.
But let’s back up a few
hours to the start of what I
considered a terrible, horrible,
no good, very bad
day that would put even
Alexander’s to shame.
I was leaving my house
in the morning, too many
things in my hands, when
a travel coffee mug found
itself open as I turned it
sideways with the key to
lock the door as I tried to
quietly escape the home
in which my son was still
sleeping.
Coffee down my shirt
and the side of my pants.
A few choice words uttered
in anger. But I found
some of those superabsorbent
paper towels in
my garage and mitigated
the harm to my pants
without having to go back
inside.
Crisis averted.
Except, the lid for the
orange juice I had in my
cup holder wasn’t staying
on right as I started to
drive. I pulled into a parking
lot to rectify the problem.
Not realizing some of
the juice had already run
down the side of the cup,
I placed it on my leg to
press the lid to the rim.
A sticky circle left behind
near my knee. Fun.
I managed to spill more
coffee on myself almost
as soon as I got to work,
because why not at this
point? And even though
I should have known to
skip the condiments at this
point in the day, I had the
gall to order a hamburger
with everything on it.
This wouldn’t be the
type of day I find myself
writing about if that
mustard didn’t find itself
in my lap.
So, I left the office —
shirt untucked to help
cover the mustard stain
— and headed to the
bank with my container
full of change. Minutes
later, I was standing in a
bank lobby, embarrassed,
bewildered, trying to wrap
my brain around my latest
problem.
Despite the handle that
remained in my hand
— the bottle tapped the
corner of the door when
it broke; I did not drop
it — the growler did not
break into big chunks; it
shattered into pieces of
various sizes, including
itty-bitty ones, mixed in
with all of the coins I have
to admit I thought for a
minute “could just be the
bank’s now, if it gets me
out of here.”
But a wonderful
employee named Maria
dutifully helped me clean
up my mess. And over the
next 40 minutes, I learned
that “picking up change”
isn’t nearly as fun as all
the hardcore punk kids
make it look. Because the
change was mixed with
glass, we couldn’t simply
sweep or vacuum the
chaos — no matter how
many times the woman
setting up her account
tried to help by offering,
“Why don’t they just get a
broom?”
I picked up coins, one
by one, as Maria swept
away the glass, instructed
customers where to walk
to avoid it and regularly
scolded me for trying to
pick up pieces of glass
with my hands. She also
worked to put my mind at
ease over the whole fiasco,
even though I know I
took her away from more
important things she had
to be doing that day.
When we finished, one
of the tellers had trouble
looking me in the eye as I
brought my slip from the
coin machine to the counter
to claim my cash.
“How are you doing
today?” she asked.
“I’ve had better days.”
“Well, it happens.”
This? I hope not too often,
for Maria’s sake. She
was a million times nicer
and more helpful than
anyone who has ever had
to help clean up someone
else’s mess ought to be.
And I hope anyone facing
a day likes this finds a
Maria there to help them
through it. But I also hope
Maria isn’t in some sort
of purgatory in which she
has to help clumsy guys
pick up glass in life’s bank
lobbies for eternity. (Shout
out to the Marias of the
world).
One final note, though:
As I left, the employee
who was setting up the account
while I was in there
said, “At least you’ve
got a new story to tell.”
And the only thing more
mortifying to me than the
idea that she recognized
me and knows what I do
for a living is that I still
don’t know if that’s the
case or it was just a casual
comment.
Either way, I really wish
I didn’t have this story to
tell.
Village’s first Brewfest an overflowing success
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
9
Three generations of Rogers — (left to right) Tom,
Jason and Zach — take in Brewfest.
From lagers to ales, craft
brewing has opened up the
industry’s wide range of
styles to beer-lovers everywhere.
Luckily for Orland
Park’s enthusiasts, the
Village of Orland Park
hosted its first beer festival
the evening of Sept. 21 at
Crescent Park.
The inaugural Orland
Park Brewfest sold out just
weeks after tickets went on
sale and brought together
the community’s beerlovers
to sample beers,
ciders and liquors from
craft brewers and distillers
throughout the Chicago
area.
The 21-and-over event
included tastings of dozens
of beer varieties from
16 breweries and two distilleries.
Guests also were
able to cast their votes
for the Drinkers’ Choice,
which included Best Logo
and Favorite Beer, among
others honors. They also
enjoyed an all-you-careto-eat
meal from City Barbeque.
Live entertainment was
provided to go along with
the food and drink. CK
and the Gray, and Fletcher
Rockwell, played a variety
of hits.
Marty Nachel — a certified
beer judge, author
and educator from Orland
Park — conducted beer
trivia.
“Last year, we did a
Harvest Hoedown ... and
we had samples of beers
there, but this is our firstever
beer fest,” said Doreen
Biela, special events
manager for the Village.
“We’re always looking
for ways to appeal to the
community, and we wanted
to do something where
you get a full dinner, great
beer samples and music,
and all right here in Orland
Park. ... You don’t
have to go to Chicago to
get that.”
As parents of a 4-monthold
and a 5-year-old, Oak
Forest’s Amy and Brian
Mitchell said they appreciated
that the event was
nearby, giving them an opportunity
for an adult night
out close to home.
“In the city, they have
all kinds of beer fests,
but not by us, so it’s nice
to get a $10 Uber for the
night out,” Amy said.
Orland Park’s Sue and
Kurt Poppenhouse are
craft beverage enthusiasts,
and said they frequent local
breweries and pubs to
try new beers. Although
they have not been to
many beer fests, they said
they were quite pleased
with Saturday’s event.
“I like the two bands;
they’re both really good,”
Kurt said. “For a sold-out
event, it’s not like we’re
packed in here. We’ve
been at other events, and
you go and it’s sold out
and the lines are long and
it’s busy — or by the time
it’s your turn, they’re out
of beer.”
The Village began planning
for the event in January.
The Village focused
on recruiting breweries
and distilleries within
traveling distance of Orland
Park. But when it
came to the beers the
breweries offered, Biela
said variety was key.
“We worked hard with
the brewers in order to
vary what they’re offering,”
she said. “We have
dozens of styles of beer
here tonight.”
Serving Chip Monk
and Blind Squirrel, New
Lenox-based Hickory
Creek Brewing Company’s
owner Gary Meyer
said that he frequents beer
festivals to get the word
out about his business. He
particularly liked that Saturday’s
event was near the
brewery.
“Nobody talks about
our beer better than I do,”
Meyer said. “So, I like to
be here personally. I’ve
done some in the city,
and I spend half the time
explaining where New
Lenox is, so this is great.”
On the flip side, Chicago’s
Revolution Brewing
Marty Nachel, of Orland Park, leads beer trivia on Sept. 21 during the Village of
Orland Park’s first Brewfest. Photos by Adam Jomant/22nd Century Media
Brian Elslager, of Revolution Brewing, talking to Art Collia during Brewfest.
was present serving its Oktoberfest
lager and Freedom
of Press, a lightly tart
ale. Orland Park’s Brian
Elslager, an area sales representative
for Revolution
Brewing, said that Orland
Park’s festival was a great
way to bring the brewery
to the community.
“We want to give back
to the community that has
done so much for us,” he
said.
Although no plans are
set, Biela said she hopes
the event will continue to
grow over the years.
“My fingers are crossed
for bigger and better next
year,” she said.

Women’s Healthcare of Illinois to offer water immersion therapy during labor
Women’s Healthcare of Illinois is
relentless in its pursuit to offer greater
options for labor and delivery.
The practice has a reputation
for providing comprehensive
and exceptional care to meet
the needs of patients in the
southwest Chicagoland area
and Northwest Indiana, and now
it will offer hydrotherapy as a
pain management alternative
during labor at Advocate South
Suburban Hospital.
This announcement comes on the
heels of Women’s Healthcare of
Illinois’ recent addition of nitrous
oxide as a pain management
option for expecting mothers.
“Our patients truly come first in
everything we do,” said Beth
Helme Smith, a certified nurse
midwife with Women’s Healthcare
of Illinois, which has offices in
Mokena and Evergreen Park. “We
believe women should have the
power to choose the best options
for their care, and together
we can make that happen by
offering attractive choices like
hydrotherapy.”
Water immersion hydrotherapy
is a safe and effective nonpharmacologic
pain relief
strategy that provides greater
relaxation for women during
labor. The physiological response
to water helps improve circulation
and eases pressure throughout
the body.
“Soaking in a warm tub reduces
stress, and the buoyancy lessens
a mother’s body weight, allowing
her greater movement and new
positioning to get comfortable,”
Helme Smith said. “Hydrotherapy
has also shown that it can provide
more efficient uterine contractions
and improved blood circulation,
which means less pain during labor
and more oxygen for the baby.”
Immersion in water also helps
lower high blood pressure and
increases the mother’s ability to
produce endorphins, which serve
as pain inhibitors.
“As the mother relaxes physically,
she’s also able to relax mentally,
andthisletsherfocusonthebirthing
process and communicating with
our team,” Helme Smith said.
The addition of water immersion
therapy is part of a comprehensive
midwifery program offered by
Women’s Healthcare of Illinois in
collaborationwithAdvocateSouth
Suburban Hospital. While water
births are sometimes an extension
of hydrotherapy solutions, at this
point, hydrotherapy will be used
exclusively for pain management.
“We could not be more pleased to
work with Women’s Healthcare of
Illinois in our joint efforts to ensure
that women in our community
have the healthiest possible
birthing experience,” said Jennifer
Doerr, clinical nurse manager at
the Women and Infants Center at
Advocate South. “By promoting
shared decision-making, we’re
creating solutions that meet the
individual needs of the women in
our care.”

The name is Indiana, Hamilton (County)
Discovering some
Hoosier hospitality
near northeast
Indianapolis
Heather Warthen
Contributing Editor
get out of town!
From craft brews and
pork tenderloins to barn
weddings and concerts, a
trip to Hoosier country is
one I look forward to each
year.
Just before you enter
into northeast Indianapolis,
you hit Hamilton County
— home of the Tenderloin
Trail, Ruoff Home Mortgage
Music Center and
one of the fastest growing
counties in the country.
Collecting several larger
cities (Carmel, Fishers,
Noblesville and Westfield)
and smaller communities
(Atlanta, Arcadia, Cicero
and Sheridan), the area has
experienced a boom in economic
development over
the past few years.
The largest of those developments
is the 400-acre
Grand Park Sports Campus,
which has 31 multipurpose
fields for soccer,
football, rugby, field hockey
and lacrosse, as well as
26 baseball and softball
diamonds. Additionally the
Grand Park Events Center
has 300,000 square-feet
of indoor turf space, with
three full-sized indoor soccer
fields.
The Indiana Pacers also
have an 88,000-square-foot
facility with eight basketball
courts, including one
that is of NBA-regulation
size. The park is also home
to the Indianapolis Colts
training camp.
The space also offers 10
miles of pedestrian and bicycle
trails.
I visit this area at least
once a year as part of the
Dave Matthews Band’s
two-night tour stop at
Ruoff Home Mortgage
Music Center in Noblesville
(tip: the locals and
longtime concertgoers still
call the venue Deer Creek,
despite the transition to a
corporate-sponsored venue
name), but this year we
found ourselves there twice
within a month.
We stayed in Westfield
during our first weekend
trip and discovered Noble
Roman’s Craft Pizza &
Pub. We decided to try
both their traditional crust
as well as their deep dish
Sicilian crust. Uncle Sal’s
Spicy Salami pie was our
favorite, with a trio of
cheeses, Genoa salami and
crushed red chili pepper
giving it an extra kick. If
you can sit at the bar, do it.
We met friends for lunch
and drinks at the Stacked
Pickle in Westfield. The
nearly 10-year-old Indiana
chain of casual restaurants,
owned and operated by former
Colts football player
Gary Brackett, is a family-friendly
establishment
that offers multiple TVs to
catch the games. Don’t forget
the fried pickles.
A wedding I attended
there took place inside at
the Lindley Farmstead at
Chatham Hills in Westfield,
which was inside a
restored 1830s barn. The
cocktail hour was inside
the barn’s cellar, which
features the original stone
foundation. And the rolling
hills and surrounding farmland
offered a beautiful
backdrop for the wedding.
On our return trip, we
stocked up for our concert
tailgate with a stop in
Sun King Tap Room and
Small-Batch Brewery in
Fishers. My favorite brews
are Pachanga, a Mexicanstyle
lager, and the Sunlight
Cream Ale.
If craft beer isn’t your
thing, they recently opened
Sun King Spirits in Carmel,
which features their
brews and handmade spirits,
including agave, rum
and white whiskey.
The amphitheater in
Noblesville is one of my
favorite places to catch a
show. The venue also offers
rotating food trucks,
including Kona Ice, Broad
Ripple Ice Cream Station
and Droopy’s BBQ.
On our way home, we
opted for a quick stop at Titus
Bakery & Deli location
in Westfield after receiving
several recommendations.
They had some beautifully
decorated sugar cookies
and tasty cake doughnuts,
but the real winner was the
large cinnamon and applefilled
fritter. Just imagine
the best apple pie you’ve
Another Perspective
ever had in pastry form.
Going back to Indy? I said,
no, no, no
OK, if you must go back
to Indianapolis, proper, I
recommend Oakleys Bistro
at the northern end of
the city.
Chef Steven J. Oakley
owns it. And while the
menu changes seasonally,
you can start the meal
with shrimp corndogs. The
piping hot shrimp are encased
in a slightly sweet
batter and fried to perfection.
Oakley made them
on Food Network’s “Beat
Bobby Flay” and secured
a victory against the renowned
chef.
I am a big fan of their
iceberg “wedge” salad,
which offers an upscale
take on a traditional wedge
with fennel, sun-dried
tomatoes and a smoked
We asked readers on social media and our staff about
their favorite places to visit outside of city limits.
They said…
“We like going to Oswego for
shopping and also Keller’s Farmstand
for apple picking.”
—Mary Bliss, in response to The New Lenox
Patriot on Facebook
“Six Flags for me. I grew up in Los
Angeles, and Great America reminds
me of Six Flags Magic Mountain
back home, plus my six year old is
becoming a roller coaster junkie just
like his old man.”
— Larry Gilman Sr., in response to The Mokena
Messenger on Facebook
The Lindley Farmstead at Chatham Hills features
an event space inside a restored barn in Westfield,
Indiana. Photo submitted
ranch dressing, topped
with a handful of crispy
potato chips.
Another not-to-miss
dish is Stanley’s meatloaf,
which is an ode to a recipe
his grandfather, a former
butcher, used. This meatloaf
comes topped with a
chile jam and whipped potato
puree.
While we love the desserts,
too, we have been
known to order another
round of shrimp corndogs
to finish the meal.
Crossing state lines to find fun
Over the river,
through the
bridge, from Ohio
to Kentucky we go
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
Fun fact that should
surprise no one from the
Chicago area: “Suburbs”
of major cities often can
cross state lines. Some
towns in Northwest Indiana
definitely still qualify
around these parts. And
people like to joke that
Milwaukee is just another
suburb of Chicago.
It’s not, but some suburbs
definitely push the
limits of being their own
urban centers. Case in
point: Newport, Kentucky,
which lies just
across the Ohio River
from Cincinnati. And if
you ever find yourself in
southwestern Ohio for,
say, a pro wrestling payper-view,
I recommend
checking it out.
Newport on the Levee
is essentially a mall along
the water that features an
aquarium, restaurants,
activities and events.
And some of the restaurants
around there have
views of the river and
city across from it.
There also is a pedestrian
walkway that goes
2,670 feet across the river
known as the Purple
People Bridge (officially
the Newport Southbank
Bridge, but that’s no fun),
a World Peace Bell and
a pair of historic districts.
But, mostly, you’ll just
be happy you’re not in
Ohio anymore. Or maybe
that’s just me.

The Dish
A tale of two Sheeps
Owners of Black
Sheep open White
Sheep in Orland
Park
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
If there is a black sheep
in the family whose role is
to party all night and sleep
all day — and many families
have one — then there
must be a white sheep that
sets the tone for the early
risers and the get-morestuff-done-before-9
a.m.
crowd.
Such is the case for The
White Sheep, which opened
in August on LaGrange
Road in Orland Park, the
sister restaurant of The
Black Sheep, not far away
on 159th Street. While the
latter caters mostly to the
late-night crowd, the former
offers everything that
the early-morning/brunch
crowd needs to get the day
started.
“We’re not trying to be
cookie-cutter omelettes and
eggs; you can pretty much
get that anywhere you go,”
area manager Nicole Paxton
said. “[For] different,
unique items that you can
only get from The White
Sheep, we want you to
crave us.”
The craving is designed
to start at the entrance,
when customers walk
through the door and immediately
are greeted by
the sights and smells of
White Sheep’s in-house
bakery and coffee bar,
The fruit bruschetta ($10) is topped with cream cheese
and seasonal fruit, along with a honey glaze and mint
garnish. Photos by T.J. Kremer III/22nd Century Media
where pastry chef Rebecca
Lombard and roaster Doug
Kwiecinski tempt patrons
with over-sized doughnuts,
cupcakes, muffins and
coffee drinks made fresh
daily. There is even an oldfashioned
orange press for
freshly squeezed OJ.
Diners are seated at expansive,
family-style tables
or roomy booths ready to
be the canvas on which
White Sheep’s diverse
menu items will be laid out
artfully. After all, people
are there to eat, and it is the
hope of executive chef Mat
Carlson that the dining experience
will forge memories
in patrons’ minds.
“I want to bring something
unique to the breakfast
world besides your
basic scrambled eggs, pancakes,
waffles — something
that when you go get
breakfast or brunch, it’s
memorable,” Carlson said.
“That’s the whole thing, for
me, about going out to eat,
is making memories. Some
of the best memories I have
from growing up are from
sitting around the breakfast
or dinner table.”
To that end, White
Sheep’s menu items offer
a plethora of palate experiences
rich in cultural diversity.
Take, for example, the
chilaquiles ($12), a traditional
Latin American dish
served in a skillet with
tortilla chips, salsa verde,
chihuahua cheese, cilantro
lime crema, avocado and
fried eggs.
For those who may
have spent a night over
at The Black Sheep and
need some help to get going,
there is the hangover
sandwich ($14), made with
chicken tinga, rosemary
bacon syrup, bacon, house
sauce, egg and cheddar
cheese, served on brioche
bread and with a side.
The “evolution” of
White Sheep grew out of
a personal “maturity” of
The avocado toast (with egg $10, without egg $9) tops
brioche bread with avocado, garlic, pickled red onion
and radish.
White Sheep in Orland Park features its own in-house
bakery and coffee bar, where a variety of pastries,
doughnuts, cupcakes, muffins and coffee drinks are
made.
the Pappas brothers, both
in terms of the restaurants’
and the brothers’ styles.
“To be good at what you
do, you have to enjoy it,”
said Dionisios Pappas, a
co-owner with his brother
Anthony. “We wanted
to satisfy 100 percent of
the market; therefore, we
opened The White Sheep
to fulfill the remaining demographics
to get a little
Sheep in them.”
White Sheep also offers
some “traditional” breakfast
and brunch items, such
as biscuits and gravy ($12),
with the biscuits made
fresh in White Sheep’s inhouse
bakery and the gravy
made from scratch, as opposed
to canned gravy.
For those looking for
something a little more
adult beverage-y to start
the day, White Sheep has
that covered, too, with a variety
of signature cocktails
— some borrowed from
Black Sheep; some unique
to White Sheep.
The Garden Mule ($8) is
made with Stoli blueberry
vodka, fresh blueberries, cucumber,
lime juice and ginger
beer. And The Sheep’s
Mimosa ($9) is made with
Flor Prosecco and freshsqueezed
orange juice or inhouse
strawberry mash.
“[The White Sheep] is
in a category of its own,
where the diversity of the
menu and the contemporary
environment is [different
from] many of our
surrounding competitors,”
Pappas said. “It is a onestop
shop.”

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
East golfer wins September honor
10 Questions
with Viyaleta Horzdich
Viyaleta Horzdish, who is
originally from Belarus, is
a junior tennis player at
Sandburg who was a state
qualifier last season.
How did you get
involved in tennis?
My parents signed me
up for lessons when I was
younger.
How is life in Belarus
different than in
Orland Park?
The biggest difference is
the language, but the cultures
are probably similar
and I don’t have problems
with communication.
What brought you to
Orland Park?
The main reason is because
Sandburg is a good
school.
What is your proudest
moment in athletics?
When I went to the state
meet sophomore year.
Do you have a hero,
or someone you look
up to?
Maria Sharapova.
Is there a sport you
are not good at?
No.
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
How about a TV show
that you could watch
over and over?
“Friends.”
Favorite food?
Blinchiki.
If they made a movie
about your life, who
should play you?
Myself.
What would that
movie be called?
“Living like Viyaleta.”
Noone and senior defensive
lineman Zack Hitterman
each had a sack
that resulted in a big loss.
Michael Charnot picked
off a pass, senior Ben Seeber,
senior defensive back
Max Pignotti, sophomore
defensive back Brayden
Garrigan and Valdez each
had a tackle for loss.
And just as the defense
shut down the Carmel offense,
the Celtic offense
also had its way with the
Corsairs.
And like Vaughn said,
his Friday was weird, but
playing Saturday did not
make a difference as the
sophomore running back
ran for 203 yards on 19
attempts including a 75-
yard score that put Providence
up 42-6. Vaughn
After roaring through
the golf season last year
and qualifying for state
as a freshman, Lincoln-
Way East’s Kailey White
is hoping for another big
postseason run.
White, who lists Rory
McIlroy as her favorite
athlete, was voted as the
winner of the 22nd Century
Media’s Southwest Chicago
Athlete of the Month
contest for September.
White is the fourth athlete
from Lincoln-Way
East to win the Athlete of
the Month honor in 2019,
joining swimmer Bryce
Wyma (January), swimmer
Mason Rhode (February)
and water polo player
Jordan Bruni (April). The
into the contest.
had two touchdowns. He
scored on a three-yard
run late in the first half to
make it 21-0.
“I felt really good,” he
said. “I can’t do it without
my linemen and the guys
in front. They’re amazing,
all of them are top notch.
Without them, I wouldn’t
be putting up big numbers.
It still feels good,
though, breaking off these
big runs and hearing the
crowd yelling. It’s just a
good feeling.”
Providence put up 405
total yards, with 321 coming
on the ground. Conway
threw for 84 yards
on 7-of-16. Although he
did not throw for many
yards, he ran for 71
yards, including a 49-yard
keeper.
Conway scored two
touchdowns for Providence,
the first coming
after the Countryman
blocked punt in
the first quarter and the
second score was a 12-
yard run, 10 of which he
carried the pile into the
endzone.
Junior running back
Max Dillman broke off a
30-yard touchdown run to
make it 49-6 in the fourth.
The offense simply had
its way with the Corsair
defense.
“We’re practicing all
the time, so we just make
sure we give it our all in
practice and it transfers
to the game and we just
do what we have to do,”
Vaughn said.
The Celtics moved to
4-1 with the win after a
tough loss two weeks ago
to Notre Dame. One more
win will likely be enough
for Providence to get a
playoff spot.

FOOTBALL
Sandburg loses tough game before heading into tough stretch
MATT CIZEK
Freelance Reporter
One week before its
matchup with Homewood-Flossmoor,
Sandburg
looked to gain some
momentum going into a
contest against Lockport.
In the first half, the Eagles
managed to get some
things going. The same
could not be said for the
second.
Playing on Saturday afternoon
following a rainy
Friday night that caused
numerous postponements
in the area, Lockport got
its offense rolling to the
tune of 254 second-half
yards, and the Eagles fell
to the Porters 28-21 following
a 21-7 halftime
advantage.
“It was a tale of two
halves,” Sandburg coach
Scott Peters said. “They
played a good second
half. We played terrible
after a decent first half.
They made better adjustments
and some plays and
we didn’t.”
Once conference rivals,
it was the first meeting between
the two teams since
2015 as both are back in
the SouthWest Suburban
Conference Blue.
After a scoreless first
quarter, Sandburg got its
offense going with sophomore
QB Kevin Zimmer
leading the way. Zimmer
capped a 10-play, 84-yard
drive with a 4-yard TD
run to give the Eagles a
7-0 lead with just over 11
minutes remaining before
halftime.
Though Lockport
would score once on a TD
pass from Riley Pfeiffer to
Aidan Ensley, Zimmer’s
two TD passes – 10 yards
to Dylan Sigel and 8 yards
to Mike Bosco – gave
LOCKPORT AT SANDBURG, SEPT. 28
Sandburg 0 21 0 0 21
TOP PERFORMERS
1. Kevin Zimmer, Sandburg QB - 5-18 for 94 yards with 2
TDs; 10 carries for 47 yards with TD
2. Luke Stefanos, Sandburg RB - 15 carries for 39 yards
3. Riley Pfeiffer, Lockport QB - 13-23 for 194 yds.; 2 TDs
UP NEXT: Sandburg plays at Homewood-Flossmoor at 7 p.m.,
Friday, Oct. 4. Homewood-Flossmoor won last year’s contest
56-0.
Sandburg its 14-point
halftime advantage.
“We have three sophomores
on our offense,”
Coach Peters said. “He
[Zimmer] is going to be a
fine quarterback when all
is said and done.”
The second half, however,
was all Lockport
(2-3, 1-1). After turning
the ball over on downs
to begin play, Lockport
scored on its next possession
on a 19-yard TD pass
from Pfeiffer to Malik
Makhlouf.
A fumbled punt by the
Porters later gave the ball
back to the Eagles (2-3,
0-1) at midfield. However,
the Eagles were unable to
move the ball.
It was a common theme
in a difficult second half
offensively that saw the
Eagles manage to pick
up only 81 yards, 37 on a
completion from Zimmer
to John-Michael Scumaci.
“We actually felt like
we moved the ball pretty
well in the first half,” Peters
said. “In the second
half, they were bringing
more pressure, and from
a field position standpoint
maybe we were a little too
conservative with our play
calling early on in the second
half…they definitely
did a better job up front.”
Lockport completed its
comeback following two
touchdown runs by Collin
Schmutzler, the last a 26-
yard run with 3 minutes
left.
Sandburg was able to
get down to the Porters’
14-yard line, but a pass
from Zimmer to David
Antoine fell incomplete
just short of the end zone.
“We played strong in
the first half. We just have
to be come together as a
team to keep everything
in sync,” Zimmer said.
“Their ends were very disciplined
with controlling
the running game. Their
corners and linebackers
[made it] harder to get
passes off.”
The schedule doesn’t
get any easier for the Eagles.
Now they will have
to win two out of three
games in a brutal three
game stretch against three
of the state’s top teams –
Homewood-Flossmoor,
Bolingbrook, and Lincoln
Way East – in order to
avoid playoff elimination.
“It’s the toughest conference
in the state,” Peters
said.
“Obviously, a stretch
[like this] isn’t anything
anyone in the state would
but it’s what we have to
deal with and we just have
to keep getting better as
a program. Our kids will
work, and will complete,
FOOTBALL
Celtics host block party in romp over Carmel
Sean Hastings
Contributing Editor
Sophomore Providence
running back Aaron
Vaughn said he did not
know what to do with his
Friday night Sept. 27.
It was weird not having
anything to do on Friday
for the first time in over
a month. He should have
been playing a football
game, but the Celtics
were one of the many area
schools to have their game
washed away and made
up on Saturday.
So, Vaughn spent the
night watching extra videos
to prepare even more
for the Celtics’ game
against Carmel Catholic
Saturday, Sept. 28. Whatever
he and the rest of
his team did on the rainy
Friday night worked as
the Celtics rolled past
Carmel in a Catholic
League/ESCC crossover
for a 49-6 win in
New Lenox.
“We came in just as
hyped,” he said.
Right off the bat, Carmel
went three-and-out,
went to punt it away, but
senior Kevin Countryman
blocked the punt and set
up the offense at Carmel’s
9-yard line, which led to a
5-yard touchdown run by
quarterback Kevin Conway.
Countryman’s block
was the first of three by
the Celtic defense.
“Field position is everything,”
Conway said.
“We got that one and almost
scored on it, then
we got the other one
[blocked by Elias Valdez,
scored by Dakota
Straight] and scored on
that and then our linebacker
[Andy Degner] got
one and scored on it. We
made sure we controlled
the field position really
well.”
Valdez’ block came
just seven seconds into
the second quarter. Carmel
had the ball at its own
20 and a group of Celtics
rushed the punter, Valdez
blocked it and Straight
dove on it in the end zone
to make it 14-0.
Carmel opted to not
send its punting unit
out the rest of the game,
rather punting out of an
offensive formation if it
did. That worked twice,
but Degner’s block came
in that situation.
“It made us feel like we
beat them,” Countryman
Providence running back Aaron Vaughn rushed for 203
yards against Carmel on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Sandburg ready to put on postseason shows
2
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Putting on Illinois High
School Association postseason
events is not always
easy.
There are volunteers
needed for various jobs
from concessions to tabulating
scores. There are
people needed at the door
to collect money. There is
security needed at some
events. There is extra work
for those who clean up
gyms and other items that
need to be tended to.
Starting Monday, Oct. 7,
Sandburg will be the host
school for five fall postseason
events over a fiveweek
period. That comes
six days after the Eagles
were scheduled to host the
SouthWest Suburban Conference
girls golf meet.
Eagles Athletic Director
Tom Freyer admitted there
is big-time work involved,
but he said it is worth it.
“Any time you can give
your kids an advantage
and have them play on
their home course, court
or field, it’s worth the effort,”
he said. “It takes a
lot of people, depending
on the event, but we have a
dedicated staff that is committed
to putting on a firstclass
event for the athletes
and for our fans. I’m looking
forward to it.
“It’s exciting for the
kids. It gives them an advantage
and showcases our
school to other people.”
Golf is coming up, with
the boys hosting a Class
3A regional on Monday,
Oct. 7, and the girls hosting
a Class 2A sectional
Oct. 14.
Three-time boys state
qualifier Max Farley loves
playing at the Eagles’
home course, Silver Lake
Country Club.
“I’m really excited that
we get to host regionals
again this year at Silver
Lake based off of our past
success there,” he said.
“Most of our matches were
held there this season, so
our entire team knows the
course extremely well,
which is indubitably important
for us as we are a
fairly inexperienced team.
Only three of our players
have seen regional action
before, but I believe the
home course advantage
will help the others play
confidently.
“However, it’s not the
home course that’s going
to get us to the sectional
but rather our solid play
that we have maintained
over the course of the season.
Our confidence levels
are high. Our expectations
are high, and hopefully our
scores will be low.”
According to IHSA records,
which go back to
2000, this is the first time
this century the Eagles will
host a girls golf sectional.
Todd Allen, who also
coaches boys basketball,
appreciates the advantage
in golf even more than in
hoops.
“The more familiar you
are with a course, the better
off you are,” Allen said.
“It’s a very good sectional
with a lot of good teams. It
will be a challenge. We’re
excited about it. The girls
are doing a great job. The
team is strong again. I’m
lucky.”
Teams and individuals
have a lot on the line
during sectional play — a
berth in the IHSA state
tournament.
“It’s a big advantage,
especially for me, because
I’ve played this course
hundreds of times,” said
Sandburg junior Athena
Kwon, a two-time state
qualifier. “I’m used to
every single slope of the
green. It’s also an advantage
for the team in general,
because we have played
a lot of practice rounds and
dual matches here.”
On Oct. 18-19, Sandburg
is to host the Class
2A girls tennis sectional
at Moraine Valley Community
College in Palos
Hills. Julia Canellis, who
is teaming with Jayme
Gross in doubles, is aiming
to become a four-time
state qualifier.
On Oct. 22-26, the Eagles
are set to host the Class
3A boys soccer regional.
Coach Desi Vuillaume’s
squad has struggled, but
could be dangerous on its
home field.
On Nov. 4-6, the Eagles
are to host the Class 4A
girls volleyball sectional.
Seeds for the tourney are
Sandburg’s boys soccer team, shown earlier in the season heading to the field with
youth soccer players, is to host regional action Oct. 22-26.
not out yet, but Sandburg
could be the top seed, putting
it in position to win its
first sectional since 2004.
That is it for awhile.
“We will host the dual
team wrestling tournament
in February and the boys
swim sectional,” Freyer
said. “I’m sure we will
pick up others along the
way.”

Ready to start horsing
around?
Signs are pointing
to Tinley Park getting
its proposed racino on
the site the former Tinley
Park Mental Health Center
property on Harlem
Avenue and 183rd Street.
Even though there is a lot
of stuff that needs to be
done, including details
such as actually building
the track, the Illinois
Racing Board recently
approved 12 racing dates
in December 2020.
There is a lot to look
forward to. But I also
wanted to look back and
wondered how rich the
harness racing history was
in Tinley and Orland Park
before all of this.
Well, there is a tiny bit
of history for both communities,
but it is quality
history courtesy for former
Orland Park resident
John Barnard and current
TP resident Tom Kelley.
Here are their stories.
St Elmo on fire
Barnard, who lived in
Orland from 1989-2004,
bought a hoss named St
Elmo Hero in a claiming
race on July 14, 2010, at
now shuttered Balmoral
Park. Elmo won that race
— his first — and Barnard
shelled out close to $9,000
to buy the gelding.
“He was a 4-year old,
which is old for a horse
just starting out,” Barnard
said. “This horse was
potentially going to the
slaughterhouse. By the
time he was 4, he was
ready to race and was
a pretty good claimer.
Someone I knew tipped
me off to the horse, and I
took a look at him. I liked
him.”
Then, Elmo won his
second race. And third.
As the months piled up,
so did the winning, and
Elmo won 25 races in
a row. He finally lost in
April, 2011, in a photo
finish after losing a shoe
in the race. Elmo had
90 races with 39 wins,
16 places and 11 shows,
and earned $747,981 and
is retired at a farm in
Michigan.
“Looking back on it
now, it’s more exciting
now than when we actually
did it,” Barnard said.
“It’s hard to get a horse
to win two or three in a
row, let alone 25 in a row.
But at the time, we were
just taking it one race at a
time.”
Barnard, who was the
president of the Crystal
Tree Country Club when
Harness racing could be coming to the area in December 2020.
he lived in Orland, is
based in Miami now and
said he has horses racing
all over the East Coast.
He said he will have
great memories of Elmo’s
career.
“This horse is a poster
child for animal rescue,”
he said. “You can see
what happens when you
take care of animals. He is
a special horse.”
Walking encyclopedia
Tinley Park’s Tom Kelley
is a local harness racing
icon and is a walking
encyclopedia on the sport.
He has worked as a
handicapper, a public relations
man, a TV announcer,
a track announcer, a
writer, a handicapper, a
judge and a steward for
the last 35 years at tracks
in Illinois and Indiana.
He loves horses, but
you won’t find him hanging
around them.
“I’m deathly allergic to
them, so I stay out of the
paddock,” Kelley said. “I
was in my mid-20s and
I was announcing and
one morning I went back
in the paddock and I felt
like I was having a heart
attack. My throat started
to swell up and I had a
rash all over my face and
hands. I still want to be
near them, but I can’t.”
He seems like he has
done it all in the sport that
he loves.
“I admire the athleticism
of the horses,” he
said. “I don’t think people
realize they are going
35-40 mph now in a race,
The drivers are amazing.
It’s not like steering a car.
You have to make snap
decisions and split-second
decisions, and they just
don’t turn on a dime.
There is a lot of grace and
beauty of it. The horses all
have their own personalities.”
Kelley, for one, would
love it if the racino comes
to Tinley.
“If there is a 7 p.m.
post, I could leave the
house at 6:50 and get
there with 5 minutes to
spare,” he said.
LISTEN UP
