Light is one of the fundamental elements of nature.
Without it, life as we know it would not be possible.
Just as we rely on light for life itself, increasingly,
we have come to rely on light as a vehicle for transmitting data and information.

Fiber optics enables the transmission of information over great distances without emissions or
interference. Fiber optic data transmission is extremely efficient and very fast. Speed-of-light fast.
This means a level of performance and traffic volume far beyond that which can be achieved with
conventional copper wire systems.
Precise connections are crucial for the performance and reliability of networks. In fiber optics,
precision is paramount. Diamond has built a worldwide reputation as the leading manufacturer
of fiber optic connectors by remaining focused on nature's model of perfection.
Since its founding in 1958, Diamond SA has remained an independent enterprise with
headquarters in picturesque Losone, Switzerland.
The company grew from modest beginnings, starting out as a machinist of ultra-hard
materials and a manufacturer of industrial jewels, record player styluses, and other high
precision components. The experience gained in these endeavors proved invaluable to
the design, development and manufacture of high-precision fiber optic connectors, and
the development of fiber cleaving, splicing and polishing technologies.
Worldwide, Diamond employees work closely with headquarters, where research, development,
production, logistics and management are located. This ensures an open culture
and promotes the identification of employees with the company. A vertically-integrated
production system and technologically-advanced manufacturing infrastructure ensures
the highest quality. All key components, including Diamond's renowned two-component
ceramic ferrule, are produced in-house, and the company maintains a certified laboratory
for continual quality monitoring.

Quality is mandatory in fiber optics. In a transmission medium thinner than a human hair, where tolerances
are measured in microns and nanometers, close enough is not good enough.
Quality means delivering products that meet customer requirements, and establishing processes that operate
at the highest efficiency. Diamond knows that a high standard of quality is mandatory. Our products and
processes have been governed by a Quality Management System (QMS) complying with ISO 9001 since
1994. Diamond’s suppliers are also required to comply with the QMS, ensuring continuous quality, from
raw materials to finished products and assemblies. Management, production and inspection processes are
subject to rigorous quality assurance standards. As part of the company’s quest to make better products,
Diamond invests a substantial percentage of its annual global sales revenue into research and development.
Diamond’s testing laboratories are accredited to ISO/IEC17025 and certified by the Swiss Federal Office of
Metrology and Accreditation (METAS). Research and development efforts have contributed to Diamond’s
success in developing solutions for harsh environment and custom applications. Diamond’s investment in
talented scientists, engineers and designers, and the skills and knowledge of these professionals, is returned
a thousand-fold every time a craft ventures into space, or a telephone rings for the first time in some remote
settlement. Doing things better has a positive impact on our environment. Diamond has eliminated fluorocarbon-and
chlorine-based cleaning solvents from its manufacturing processes. Waste metal is removed and
disposed of in an environmentally-sensitive manner.
Information technology and communications have become more and more important within our economy
and society.
In the early days of fiber optics, when telecommunication companies were still experimenting with this
revolutionary technology, Diamond was already meeting the needs of commerce. In 1979 Diamond developed
its first connector for PTT in Switzerland (today’s Swisscom), already using a two component ferrule
and a micromanipulator to centre the fiber core inside the connector. With this method a 0.5 dB Insertion
Loss was achieved: an unequalled performance at that time.
Later on, Diamond created the first push pull connector with integrated dust cap: the famous E-2000 TM
connector. Other firsts followed quickly: 100% quality control, the Active Core Alignment technique, two
component ferrules, maximum insertion loss of 0.10 dB, minimum return loss of 85 dB, high power connectors,
polarization maintaining connectors, multi-fiber connectors and customized connectors.
Diamond’s unique positioning and excellent connector performance have contributed to the company’s
success in the telecommunication market.
FTTx
The tidal wave of information and communications technology that has swept the world over the past five
decades has fundamentally changed the nature of our societies and our economies.
Nowhere is that more apparent than in the field of broadcast communications.
Today, huge and ever-increasing numbers of people enjoy access to broadband
television and the Internet. The sheer volume of data transmitted every
day exceeds the total number of words printed in all the books
of all the libraries of the world! Fiber optic technology is an
important part of the infrastructure that supports this staggering
volume. From the humble telephone, through local, metropolitan
F-3000 TM Fusion
and wide area networks, to High Definition Television (HDTV), fiber optic backbones carry data and information across
the street, across the city, and around the world. Local Area Networks and even Triple Play services for the home require
continuously-increasing data rates. While copper networks are still dominant in these fields today, there is no doubt that
they will have to be replaced by Fiber Optic Networks in the near future. For companies who choose fiber optics for
their FTTx applications, Diamond offers a full range of practical and reliable passive and active components such as
racks, patchpanels, switches, media converters, break-outs, fanouts, pigtails, patchcords, and much more. Diamond’s
product range is constantly being expanded, increasing the added value and reducing installation expenses. The newest
FTTx assets are: the ZEUS splicing machine, which enables the FO installer to mount or replace E 2000, SC, ST, FC and
F-3000 (LC-compliant) connectors in a simple and reliable way in only a few minutes, without the need for splicing
trays; and the 1.25mm ferrule assembly of the F-3000 r & rs connector, which can be blown into 3mm micro-ducts from
a central point directly to the home, where an F-3000 connector can then be installed in a couple of minutes by personnel
with only minimal training. This, of course, considerably reduces the installation expenses. The advent of High Definition
Television and other “extreme bandwidth” technologies has made fiber optics almost mandatory where these technologies
are deployed. Diamond supplies specialist fiber interconnect products for Broadcast and associated industries.

DEFENSE / AVIONICS / AEROSPACE
There are no environments more demanding and challenging than modern combat theaters, high altitude flight, or spaceflight.
In each of these environments, the ability to rapidly generate and transmit data and information under harsh conditions is critical
for maximum performance and success. Modern warships and warplanes rely on fiber optics to carry mission-critical data immune
to electromagnetic interference. Commercial aircraft manufacturers place their trust in fiber optics so that they can safely carry
hundreds of thousands of passengers millions of kilometers daily. The vehicles that shrug off the earth’s grip and fly to space
could not do what they do without fiber optics. Diamond is an important supplier of optical communications technology to many
Departments of Defense, Defense Research Organizations, and major defense contractors. This includes tactical and battlefield
optical communications equipment; military and aerospace optical connectors and assemblies for extreme environments; specialized
connector technology including polarization- maintaining and expanded beam connectors; military standard cables and
specialised application optical connectors to MIL-STD-167 and MIL-STD-901D; fiber management systems and field termination
and test equipment; and ruggedized, high-speed data networking equipment for field applications. In addition, Diamond also
provides design and consulting services for military applications of fiber optics and high speed data networking. Furthermore,
Diamond fabricates and tests one-off prototypes and offers training and maintenance support services. Diamond’s expertise in
extreme environments benefits aviation. Where else is it more important to guarantee safety and reliability of data transmission?
Undergoing strong vibrations and accelerations as well as vacuum, high pressure and temperature ranges, our connectors are
strong, small and reliable. The AVIM connector was developed specifically for NASA, and is in service on space shuttles, satellites,
and the International Space Station (ISS).
INDUSTRIES AND MEDICAL DEVICES RUNNING
Energy plants, coal mines, offshore platforms, factories and refineries are examples of industrial
sites in which Diamond’s harsh environment connectors are used. High temperature, humidity,
salty water, vibrations are all challenges for Diamond’s harsh environment connectors. Moreover
Fiber Optic technology is opening exciting new applications in the medical industry.
MEDICAL
Optical fiber is becoming used increasingly in diagnostic devices, surgical instrumentation and
therapeutical applications. The requirements typically are beyond standard commercial connectors
and cable assemblies. EtO Sterilizable, Non-magnetic, IP65 rating, color coding and easy handling
are only some examples of needs that are satisfied by Diamond’s Medical fiber optic components.
HARSH ENVIRONMENT
IP protected connector bodies up to IP67, 1 to 24 channels, direct or indirect ferrule contact, albe -
ri no or standard connector. Diamond connectors are strong, reliable and optically performant.
Among our recent innovations:
Diamond’s titanium ferrule has been developed to meet the challenges of harsh environment
applications. Resistant against corrosion, humidity and temperature, this new ferrule complies with
Extreme Environmental categories for optical interfaces.
Diamond’s composite ferrule enables us to develop customized connector inserts with one or
more fiber optic channels and to place them in existing hybrid shelfs (e.g.
with electric, gas, fluid). With Diamond’s field repair tools,
fiber optic connections can easily be replaced
in the field in only a few minutes.
