Greetings from the
GWOC Commissioner
Greetings! On behalf of the Greater Western Ohio Conference I would like to welcome
you to today’s event. The participants today have been working hard and preparing for the
season. Needless to say they are thrilled to have you in attendance.
This is a year of change for the GWOC as we transition to two divisions for the 2019-2020
school year. The divisions will be named American and National. While we are excited
for the current setup of the GWOC this will be the final year that the GWOC offers a
division format. The conference will be moving to an eight team membership setup
beginning fall of 2020. This transition will allow the GWOC to meet the needs of
membership and solidify the conference for the foreseeable future.
The Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) has built a distinguished and proud
history of academic and athletic excellence over the years. It offers students the best
opportunities to compete in an elite academic and athletic conference. It also provides a
forum for fans of the GWOC to support the best high schools, and competition, in the state.
We recognize that competition can be fierce but we must strive to promote and encourage
sportsmanship to the fullest degree in all of our athletic events. Proper conduct and respect
for all are actions to be demonstrated before, during, and after all sporting events and
activities. We ask for your support with this initiative by being a role model and positively
supporting the event’s participants. Sportsmanship is everyone’s responsibility – please do
your part.
The student-athletes, coaches, and administrators of the GWOC thank you for your
ongoing support. You play a vital role in the continued growth and success of the
conference. Please visit the conference website at www.gwocsports.com for all
conference related information and follow us on Twitter at @GWOC. I hope you enjoy
your visit and today’s contest.
Sincerely,
Eric Spahr
Centerville Athletic Boosters
Dear Elk Families,
More than half of the high school and middle school student population in Centerville City Schools
participate in one or more of the sports programs offered by the district; a strong indication our
community values and supports the continuation of a strong sports program within Centerville City
Schools. The benefits to students from participating in the sports programs range from being a part of
a team, being physically fit, improving skills in a game, becoming a leader in an athletic program, and
possibly earning a college scholarship as a result of the higher level of training and competition that
our district enjoys.
The Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club is a charitable organization whose mission and purpose
is to support the Centerville athletic programs. With the ever-changing funding landscape for school
districts all over the country, it is now more important than ever for booster groups such as ours to
generate funds to continue providing these opportunities for our students. For over 30 years, the
Athletic Booster Club has enhanced the District’s athletic programs by providing supplemental funding
and making substantial contributions to the capital improvements in all our sport facilities. We have
contributed to the improvements in the weight room, the tennis courts, gymnasiums, the soccer/
lacrosse field, the baseball field, and the football field. The Centerville community must continue to
help sustain these popular athletic programs.
Please join the Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club if you have not already done so. It is easy
to join and there are a number of levels in which to participate. Visit the Booster Website at www.
elkboosters.com for membership information. Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated!
Recapping the 2018 Season
The 2018 varsity squad finished the season 15-3-2. They fought hard as a unit and battled through adversity to
make it to the district finals, where they fell to Mason 0-1.
Building upon a Winning Tradition
With the start of a new season for the women’s soccer program, the players and the coaching staff are aiming to
build upon the program’s winning tradition.
This year’s varsity roster includes nine first-year-varsity players to complement the ten returning members. Our
hard work began in June with approximately 60 other candidates. They have been relentless in their training and
conditioning with the goal of playing their best soccer during tournament time in October and November. The JVA
and JVB teams also feature several new faces eager to compete and contribute to the program’s prosperity.
The team, as always, is committed to the tradition of excellence that the program has maintained during its fortytwo-year
history. The new players and coaching staff understand the strong sense of tradition and the expectation
for excellence both on and off the pitch, and they will continually push themselves to represent the school and
community proudly.
We look forward to the coming season, and we are grateful for the support from the community.
Sincerely,
CHS Women’s Coaching Staff

Key Returnees this year are: Scottee Johnson, Senior setter and right side hitter (Michigan Commit) – First Team GWOC & District 15, Honorable Mention
All-State. Dani Sargent, Senior Middle (Tiffin University Commit) - Second Team National Division GWOC, Second Team All-District 15, Evelyn Deuser, Senior
Outside Hitter - National Division Special Mention GWOC and Honorable Mention All-District 15 could move to right side this year. Stephanie Hofmann, Junior
Outside hitter, has improved and I’m expecting to see her carry more load this year. Middle Hitter Emma Miller, Junior, is looking good. I can’t wait to see how
she can contribute this season. Kayla Cavicchioni, Senior, has earned the libero shirt and has really shined for us thus far. She will be our defensive anchor
and we are looking for great things out of her. Bebe Gerken, Junior, was a part time starter last season has improved defensively and has a tough serve. Ava
Penley, DS Senior, is back after a season off and is playing very well. She is so coachable and wants to get better. She is making an impact for us.
Key newcomers are: Anna Hapner, a Junior transfer Outside Hitter from Waynesville will be contributing this year. Sophomore Setter Hannah Golden has
taken the next step to be an intricate piece of our offense. DS Audrey Brothers, a sophomore, has been pushing our current starters both in the front and back
row. Shadhidah Shipp, Junior Middle/Right Side hitter, she is a really good athlete that lacks the experience right now but she is working hard and is so athletic
that we see a lot of potential in her.
Last season’s varsity assistant coach Meggie Marten has decided to make a career change and is going back to school. I had to replace her at the last minute
and I’m pleased to announce that long time Lebanon coach Tim Mersch has filled that roll. Tim and I have a lot of experience and we’re hitting the ground running,
(well at our age maybe a fast walk). I really feel blessed that I was able to find a quality coach like Tim on short notice. Corey Burge is stepping in to take
over the JV team this year and Laura Ryan is back with the Freshman. I’m also hoping to add Ann House as a volunteer assistant, who is also an awesome
coach with a vast amount of experience.
This season we expect the usual suspects (Springboro and Beavercreek) will be fighting the Elks for the right to say they are the league champions. We would
like to earn that right. We have challenged the girls to get a little better every day and play for their teammates. If they do that, the wins will take care of themselves.
We want to be the best versions of ourselves every time we take the court. So far the team is working very hard at improving all aspects of their game.
I’m very encouraged by what I’m seeing.
HEAD COACH
David Dobson
The 2018 girls’ cross country team had an outstanding season last year. The team competed with
some of the very finest teams throughout the season and helped prepare them to take home the
State Runner-Up trophy at the OHSAA State Championships in November. The team placed 2nd at
GWOC and third at Regionals before running one of their best races at National Trail Raceway after
the meet had been delayed a week due to flooding. The team was sitting in 3rd place after a mile
but fell to 5th after the two-mile mark. Displaying great resolve and determination, the team finished
extremely well to edge past Mason by a couple of points in the final tally to become State Runners-Up
for the second time in school history. The team was led by a State Runner-Up finish by sophomore
Emma Bucher and an All-Ohio finish by junior, Kerri Walsh. They were supported by senior, Savannah
Lowe; sophomore, Nikki Jindal; senior, Rachel Whitehead; junior, Dalia Einstein, and sophomore,
Maddie Little. Junior, Alex Jackson served as the team’s alternate.
The 2019 team is preparing well for another successful season. The team returns 5 members of the
2018 State Championship team and hopes to be successful through their development of five key
core values: positive, relentless, invested, disciplined, and engaged. Several members of time in the
offseason completing a book study centered around Jon Gordon’s book The Energy Bus. In 2019,
the team will use the Energy Bus to move the team forward in positivity and hopefully be #PACKn-
READY for our journey towards success. Please join the team at any of the local meets including
our home meet, Saturday Night Lights, on Saturday, September 21!
“2018 BOYS GOLF SEASON IN REVIEW
The Elks Boys Golf Team won the GWOC East Division and the GWOC Conference title for 2018. The
Elks placed first in their Sectional with an amazing team score of 287 or 1 under par as a team, to qualify
for a trip to the Southwest District Tournament. They went on to place fourth at Districts/Regionals one
place away from qualifing for the State Tournament.
The Elks went 3-0 in GWOC head-to-head competitions and 262-56 in season play. The Elks set CHS
records for Sectional the team score. Nick Clark, AJ Cherubini, and Eric Cherubini shot an impressive 71
or 1 under par at Sectionals each tying the Sectional 18 hole individual school record.
Individually, Centerville varsity players received several awards in the 2018 season. AJ Cherubini, Eric
Cherubini and Will Owen were all named to the All GWOC team! AJ Cherubini, Eric Cherubini, Will Owen,
Drew Smith and Nick Clark all qualified for First Team National League! Grant Geisel qualified for Second
Team National League in GWOC Honors.
LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2019 SEASON
The Elks lose a lot of senior leaders from last year’s season: AJ Cherubini, Nick Clark, Grant Geisel, Drew
Smith, Jared Lieberman and Hyunil Kim. At least one of our golfers will be playing golf in college, AJ
Cherubini is going to play for Wittenburg in the fall!
The Elks continue to play their home matches at Yankee Trace and again will host the annual Elk Invitational
in August, which draws some of the top teams in Ohio. The Elks bring back two varsity starters from
last season who both earned GWOC Honors: Eric Cherubini and Will Owen. There will be several players
battling to fill out the varsity roster and we hope to be highly competitive in the GWOC, SW Sectional, SW
District, and at the State Tournament in 2019!
Schools are at the heart of a community. They are where our friends and
families come together for academics, sports and other extra-curricular
activities. A place where our youth build on their values, strengths and
encouragement for a positive future. Premier Health is proud to partner with
more than 100 schools and universities to build healthier communities.
We work hand in hand with educators to offer academic programs to stimulate
student interest in healthcare careers. And, as the official sports medicine
provider of nearly 40 high schools and colleges, Premier Health leads the
region in caring for student athletes.
Supporting our schools is just one of the many ways we’re giving back to our
community. After all, our care doesn’t just live inside the walls of our hospitals.
