THE PARTY

DON’T START

’TIL YOU

WALK IN

This year (like every year) our Most Wanted and The It List guests

gave a masterclass in How To Make An Entrance

“Wow! Where to start?

What a night! You guys

NAILED it!”

Andrew Cannon

Ruffians

LET’S GET

MWIT STARTED

What happens when you gather a whole load of hairdressing’s movers, shakers and party

people into one gigantic Insta-worthy installation-filled drinks reception? A really good time,

that’s what! At our pre-awards gathering, overlooked by iconic imagery of previous MWIT

winners, guests enjoyed not just endless supplies of mouthwatering cocktails and canapes,

but – out of nowhere! – a brilliantly choreographed flash mob of ghd-styled dancers, who,

after performing among the crowd in artfully placed spotlights, guided everyone up the

stairs to the Press Hall for dinner. Now that’s how you get a party started!

FLASHDANCE!

As the cocktails flowed a ghd dance troupe stole the limelight – wowing the crowd not only with a highenergy

performance but, of course, sensational hair, too. Whether super-sleek, wavy texture, soft, airy

volume, every style shone and every look stayed locked in place!

Wtih thanks to: the ghd hair team, led by Janine Jennings; make-up artist Shari Rendle; fashion stylist Boo Attwood; Black Birdcage for models and choreography

BREAKING NEWS

(AND BREAD)…

Taking their places for dinner in the industrial-chic hall spaces that used to

house London’s newspaper printing presses, 700 hair, fashion and media VIPs

sat at tables dramatically decorated by McQueen (providers of flowers for

Vanity Fair’s Oscars After Party for the past 25 years) to be served a menu

specially created by the chefs at The Recipe, London’s most sought-after

caterers. Beef and ale pie served with buttery mashed potatoes, roasted

carrots, asparagus and shallots was followed by a sumptuous chocolate cake

with kirsch cherries and whipped cream – all washed down with lashings of

wine, in endlessly refilled glasses. Darlings, it was simply divine!

“I had a fab night. Food

was perfect, loved the

character of the venue

and you guys certainly

captured an atmosphere”

Chad Maxwell

ODE TO OMIELAN

With our brand new venue came a fresh new host: BAFTA Breakthrough Brit

winner – and tornado of comedy talent – Luisa Omielan, who had guests in

stitches throughout. Her hilarious entrance, to Beyoncé’s Run the World (Girls),

grabbed the audience by the scruff or the neck, and we were putty in her

hands from that moment on…

“We are very proud to be a part of this

beautiful occasion that brings our

community together to recognise its

uniqueness and talent”

Lucie Seffens

L’Oréal Professionnel

THEY’VE

GOT IT!

Silence falls across the Press Hall. A few seconds feels

like an eternity. Then, booming through the speakers

you hear… your name! We were right there when The It

List of 2019 – our tenth It List and once again exclusively

sponsored by ghd – was announced. Get ready to meet

our industry’s new rule-breakers and game-changers and

take a look through the emotions we managed to capture

THE RISING STAR

For a young salon assistant who’s enthusiastic, hardworking and fast

improving – a new team star!

EXCLUSIVELY SPONSORED BY

Since re-booting his career (he used to be in sales), Callum’s caring nature and

determination have seen him rise through the ranks at Ruffians to become ‘New Ruffian

of the Year’. The judges also saw that same promise, describing him as “passionate and

skilled with drive and plans to achieve more”.

CALLUM MCDONALD

RUFFIANS

This is ridiculous! Thank you so much! I’ve only been

cutting hair for 10 seconds. I can’t explain how much this

means to me. My life has changed dramatically, and it

started in a barber shop in Edinburgh…

(Callum went on to sing I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers)

THE FASHIONISTA

For a young stylist making a mark in session circles

TOM GILLING

TAYLOR TAYLOR, LONDON

Already a director of Taylor Taylor’s Shoreditch salon, Tom has been working as a session

stylist for six years, assisting the likes of Anthony Turner (who took the 2019 Most Wanted

Session Stylist title). The judges were impressed. “Of the highest standard,” they said of

this hardworking stylist.

I’ve been doing this for years and it takes a lot

of passion to just keep at it. I never thought I’d

ever take this home, ever. It means a lot

THE ENTREPRENEUR

For a young salon owner who has created an exciting and successful business

EXCLUSIVELY SPONSORED BY

JENNIFER LINTON

LINTON & MAC

Every box is ticked for every client at Linton & Mac in Aberdeen, meaning the bustling

salon is a success story belying its young age. The judges were won over with Jennifer’s

originality and drive, with one exclaiming, “Hats off, you are a force of nature and a true

entrepreneur – no stone unturned, no mountain too high”.

I didn’t expect this. Thank you so much. I want to

thank my business partner Jay for putting up with

me and letting me be right so much of the time!

THE VISIONARY

For a young stylist or technician who is pushing creative boundaries

AMELIA EVANS

HARE & BONE

Master stylist and self-confessed perfectionist Amelia has been honing her technical skills

and her understated style. Subtlety is key to her vision, combining her love of classic looks

with contemporary editorial details. “Timeless and stunning,” was the judges’ assessment

of her winning portfolio.

Oh, wow! I’ve got to say a massive thank you

to all of my team. Jamie Benny, I couldn’t have

done it without you

THE IT GUY

For a young male hair professional excelling in multiple areas of their work

and destined for greatness

EXCLUSIVELY SPONSORED BY

JAMIE BENNY

HARE & BONE

This artistic director has a keen eye for what works on camera – Jamie’s already been

published in Vogue Germany, Vogue Thailand and Glamour – and he’s lead stylist for

Tom Ford sales campaigns. A regular backstage at Fashion Week and couture shows, his

signature style of deconstructed classics is perfectly imperfect – and in the salon, he never

stops sharing his skills and encouraging his team.

This is literally insane. I’ve entered this competition

for six years running and it means the world to me. I’m

dedicated to the craft, I’m obsessed with hairdressing

and I love my team. Thank you so much!

Working her magic at both ends of the country, Sarah has a foot in Aberdeen at Linton

& Mac and another at The Social in London, while also writing courses and speaking

at events such as Creative HEAD’s Salon Smart. And she scooped a UK L’Oréal Colour

Trophy Award with a moss-green mullet that defied convention. No wonder Black is

always in fashion!

I genuinely did not expect this. I’m so happy to be a

part of everything. Thank you to Creative HEAD for

an evening to reflect on everything we’re really f**king

proud of. I’m so blessed to be around so many talented,

inspiring people all the time

The

Our starriest-ever guest list and an awesome industrial venue with way too many out-of-bounds barriers begging

to be breached… Ah, it simply had to be done. In fact, it’s a promise we make every year: to send a photographer

and a handful of fabulous people away from the MWIT magic (only for a moment) and into some secret spaces for

their close-ups. So, we did it, once again – and look who we found!

BEST NEW BOUTIQUE SALON

For a small new salon with a unique sense of style

CATEGORY SPONSOR

Douce founder Phil Benton won The It List Entrepreneur last year with his fleet of iconic

aluminium Airstreams that each contain three styling chairs. Touring London and the

regions and now expanding into France, this is mobile hairdressing at its slickest. The

judges declared Douce “unfaultable in its originality”.

DOUCE

CAMBRIDGE & LONDON

I really wasn’t expecting this. Massive thanks to my

girlfriend Sophie – we entered this together, she’s been

with me every step through the concept and branding

– to my amazing team, parents and uncle. Every day we’re

in a different spot, which is like a dream. I love it!

CATEGORY SPONSOR

BEST SALON EXPERIENCE

For a salon delivering stellar customer service

MICHAEL VAN CLARKE

LONDON

MVC first won this award in 2010 – consistent, or what? For the staff at this iconic London

salon, going the extra mile is second nature: weekly fresh flower displays, opulent

cloakrooms and an on-site deli with a personal chef are the result of storyboarding

customer journeys for detailed training. “Impressive and proving success through

consistently high standards,” said the judges.

I have to thank my team, they work so hard to

choreograph the experience for my clients from

the moment they step in the salon

BEST LOCAL SALON

For a salon that best serves its local community

CATEGORY SPONSOR

LINTON & MAC

ABERDEEN

With a jam-packed calendar of events to support local businesses, Linton & Mac believes

firmly in community spirit. Christmas markets and collaborations with Gray’s School of Art

are just two initiatives that impressed the judges, who summed up its entry as “amazing”.

Together with its two It List wins, this Most Wanted triumph marked a superb hat-trick for

Linton & Mac at the Grand Final.

Totally speechless! We just turned four yesterday,

and it’s been four years of hard work and dedication

CATEGORY SPONSOR

BEST NEW SALON

For a new or revamped salon that turns heads

GINA CONWAY SALONS AND SPAS

WIMBLEDON

Party of Elys Urban Beauty, this new eco-friendly Gina Conway location offers two

different client experiences: speedy services in a buzzy environment downstairs, while

upstairs is a tranquil sanctuary for rest and relaxation. Judges described it as “a beautiful,

multi-faceted space delivering a 360-degree lifestyle experience”.

I am beyond thrilled. I’ve had an amazing

opportunity to open a new salon and spa, and this

has been my life’s work culminating in something

amazing. To be recognised in this way means the

world to me and my team

BEST SALON TEAM

For salon teamwork at its best

CATEGORY SPONSOR

LLOYDS HAIR

WATERFORD, IRELAND

Trust and support are key to this outstanding Irish team, who celebrated en masse

onstage. Regular Lloyds lowdowns encourage open discussions, while the Collective

Commandments – a set of rules to live by – create a happier salon. The judges were

impressed and voted Lloyds unanimously as winner, taking it to three Most Wanted team

victories and Legend status in 2020.

Yesterday we celebrated our eight-year anniversary

as salon owners – thank you so much!

INDEPENDENT STYLIST

For a stylist looking after clients while busy building ‘brand me’

CATEGORY SPONSOR

PAULA McCASH

‘Variety’ is the word that springs to mind for Paula, our inaugural Independent Stylist

– even her limited salon days are split between two different spaces to accommodate her

clients. When she’s not zipping between salons she can be found at session stylist Syd

Hayes’ right hand, entrusted with key model looks.

This is the first ever Independent Stylist award and I

couldn’t be here without my team, family, friends and

Syd [Hayes] Squad. I want to thank Creative HEAD for

this award, and I’ll see you all on the dancefloor!

CATEGORY SPONSOR

commercial expertise

A popular winner, Zoë, creative director at John Frieda Salons, takes this title for the

second year in a row, thanks to the incredible menus she devises for salons, which set

Instagram ablaze each summer. She’s also running her online concept, The Influence

Project, while seeing clients and undertaking editorial work.

ZOË IRWIN

JOHN FRIEDA SALONS

First of all, thank you so much. I’m genuinely

CATEGORY SPONSOR

BUSINESS THINKER

For a salon owner or director who has built an outstanding salon business

MARK WOOLLEY

ELECTRIC HAIRDRESSING

With six salons across the UK and a product line in eight countries, Electric is a jolt

of inspiration for the industry. The brand is a multi-platform endeavour, spanning a

photographic studio, education and a farm producing ingredients for the product line.

The judges’ assessment? “Genius.” And the audience reaction? A standing ovation for a

Cheshire cat-like Mr Woolley.

Electric family, big up! We’re a brand, not a

person, we’re in it together and we genuinely

feel like we’re doing something different.

Everyone who’s on the journey, thank you very

much. What a night!

COLOUR EXPERT

For a colour director or senior colourist with exceptional technical skill and

commercial expertise

her laurels. From starring in a Valentino ad to driving her own Not Another Academy,

a safe space for intimidated colourists, she’s a genuine trendsetter – and now a Most

Wanted Legend. And check out that outfit!

SOPHIA HILTON

NOT ANOTHER SALON

I don’t think I won this as a colourist but because of

my team. What we have tried to do is not compete

with big brands – we are trying to find the people

that never would go on a course. I want them to join

us and I am proud of that

For the best on-trend image of the year

he couldn’t be here this evening, he’s held up in America but

he gave me this to say: Even though I’m only here in spirit

you smashed it once again. Thank you Creative HEAD for

creating such an epic event, and to the other finalists for

making it such an effort to win!

AWARD FOR INNOVATION

Rewarding an original hairdressing innovation that has proved a success for

the salon business or the industry at large

The Lions Barber Collective roared to victory with its aim of raising awareness of men’s

mental health and helping identify signs of depression and suicidal thoughts in clients.

It’s an initiative that has received global recognition – including a nod from HRH Prince

William – and gained high praise from all the judges. A well-deserved Award for

Innovation winner – not just innovative, but life-changing.

TOM CHAPMAN

FOR THE LIONS BARBER COLLECTIVE

People say, ‘I’m just a hairdresser’ but that’s bullsh*t.

We are so much more. Hairdressers listen to 2,000

hours of talking a year. We are the front line. We are

fighting to save lives. We need that confidence to

help those people in the chair

CATEGORY SPONSOR

SESSION STYLIST

For the most exciting hairdresser working in fashion

ANTHONY TURNER

As one of the most in-demand hair stylists in the fashion industry, Anthony Turner boasts

an extensive portfolio of clients that includes luxury brands such as Jil Sander, Dior,

Victoria Beckham and Peter Pilotto. Regularly working alongside photographers such

as Willy Vanderperre and Craig McDean, Turner’s signature dramatic and flamboyant

aesthetic makes him a frequent collaborator with Vogue, as well as landing him numerous

advertising campaigns. This year he launched his own fanzine, Mortal Remains,

“a documentation of young people right now who I’m obsessed with”.

I’m gonna make it short and sweet. Charlotte, Lucas

and Claire. But this is really dedicated to my nana

and grandad – thank you so much

HAIR ICON

For the most inspirational hairdresser of 2019

SAM MCKNIGHT

The hairdresser’s hairdresser” becomes our first-ever double Most Wanted Legend

with this third Hair Icon victory (he’s also won Session Stylist three times). It’s been a stellar

time for Sam – how many hairdressers can boast a coffee table book, an eponymous

styling line and an exhibition at Somerset House? After 45 years in the industry, he still

works on fashion shows and editorial at the highest level, most notably with Chanel

and Vogue. Sam, we are in awe...

Passionate about the industry and his team, and a creator of spectacular moments of magic for magazines and on the catwalk, Dylan

isn’t afraid to speak his mind or admit to his mistakes (often with great humour), making him one of the most popular stars on the

contemporary hair scene. Welcome to this elite bunch of hair Legends, Dylan!
