Introducing…
Samantha Howard,
Director of Nursing and Patient Services
Sam joined Rennie Grove in December
2018 as Head of Children’s and Family
Services and became our Director of
Nursing in May 2019. Prior to joining
Rennie Grove, Sam worked as both
a children’s and adult nurse and has
extensive experience of running
community nursing teams. Here, Sam
tells us a bit more about herself:
Sum up your job in a sentence?
It’s my privilege to work with trustees,
senior management and nurses and other
clinicians at all levels to ensure that we
give our patients and families the high
standard of care and support they need
and deserve.
What do you like most about your job?
Knowing that I am responsible for a
service that gives people a real choice
about where they die and that we can
make it possible for that to be at home.
Outside of work, I like to….
Ride rollercoasters! Preferably at
Disney World in Florida.
What’s your favourite film?
I love all Disney films but my favourite
is The Little Mermaid. My favourite non-
Disney film is Buster – because I love
Phil Collins.
What’s your favourite food?
Mickey Mouse waffles served with fruit
and yogurt!
For every 1 member
of staff we have
7 volunteers
Tad’s
story
Rennie Grove’s nurses cared for Tad
and supported his family as his health
deteriorated. Tad’s wife Ethne said:
“You knew that when a Rennie Grove
nurse was coming you were getting
somebody who really knew what they
were doing. You felt a great sense of
relief that they were on their way and
you knew that when they came they
would be able to cope marvellously.”
“Rennie Grove’s nurses cared for Tad
at home for three weeks before he died.
Our sons and daughters were frequent
visitors – often staying overnight – and
we felt very lucky that he was able to
spend time with all the family while he
was at home.”
An idea inspired by Ann, our Flackwell
Heath retail manager, to say a personal
and special thank you to our volunteers in
Volunteers’ Week enabled line managers of
volunteers to write a personal message of
thanks to each of their volunteers. Here is
some feedback from our volunteers:
“It was lovely to receive the little thank-you
card, thank you. I have displayed it on my
bookcase, where it is a bit of a talking point for
my more observant visitors, and I can continue
to enjoy its happy picture and remember the
jolly times I have had standing (and walking),
sometimes in the rain, on my exploits to
support Rennie Grove’s fundraising efforts.
Keep on doing what you are doing.”
“It was lovely to receive my thank you card.
Although everyone says thank you when I come
in, it was a nice extra thank you to receive a card,
made me feel very appreciated. Volunteering is
a two way thing – volunteers get as much out
of helping as the charity gets for their help.”
“Thank you for the thank you card, I hadn’t
appreciated you had written a personal
different message on everyone’s card.”
Spotlight on
volunteers
We have 72 Day
Services volunteers
at Grove House
Richard
Richard has volunteered
at our Little Chalfont shop
since 2017. He has recently
been a fantastic support to
a local community school
based in Chesham. School
Governor, Jackie Cox,
called into the shop and
provided Richard
with a list of books the
school needed. Over
four months he has kept
a keen eye out when
sorting through the books
donated to the shop and
managed to amass all the
books on the list. Jackie
was delighted to pick
them up adding, “Richard
has been very helpful
with my request and is a
credit to Rennie Grove
as a volunteer”.
Steve
Steve has been an
invaluable support to Liz,
Facilities Team Leader,
who recently joined
Rennie Grove. Steve has
been volunteering for over
six years and his knowledge
of the infrastructure of the
day hospice alongside his
practical skills has enabled
Liz to get on with the
“day job” working across
all our office bases.
Steve will tackle most
projects from coordinating
a team of volunteers to
moving the summerhouse
in the garden of Grove
House to re-roofing the
shed. Steve gets on with
his tasks with good cheer
and a huge amount
of commitment.
Joy
Joy has been
volunteering as part of
the Receptionist Team
at Rennie House in Tring
for just over two years.
She said: “I really enjoy
the role; it’s lovely to
meet new people and
to feel that you are
helping such a wonderful
local organisation.
Our main role on
reception is to answer
the switchboard and
to open the door and
welcome everyone.
However we get involved
in many administrative
tasks, for example making
up hampers for events,
sending out mail shots
advertising events
and much more.
Working with our partners
People are sometimes surprised to
learn that we regularly work alongside
colleagues from neighbouring hospices
to deliver the best possible end-of-life
care for our patients.
A great example of partnership
working took place over the summer
when the Hospice of St Francis (HoSF)
in Berkhamsted temporarily closed
its inpatient beds to enable essential
refurbishment work to take place.
Rennie Grove’s nurses caring for
patients in Dacorum and St Albans
were delighted to welcome five
nurses and three healthcare assistants
from HoSF into their teams on a
temporary basis.
Jenny Roberts, Hospice at Home Nurse
at Rennie Grove said: “It’s been really
great working alongside nurses from the
Hospice of St Francis and making joint
visits to patients. There are times when our
hospice at home patients opt to move into
a bedded hospice so we already have great
relationships with other charities providing
end-of-life care but being able to actually
work together for a few weeks has been
a really positive experience for us all.”
Kate, who is a healthcare assistant at
the Hospice of St Francis said: “Thank you
very much for making us so welcome and
making this placement such a positive
experience. Here’s to an even stronger
relationship in the future!”
Rennie Grove Stars
eBay
Our eBay shop is a virtual
Aladdin’s cave of treasure and
provides a healthy contribution
to the funds we need to provide
our service to patients and their families.
From the traditional vintage cameras and
watches to the more contemporary designer
suits and dresses, we have recently had
some more unusual items on sale including
a set of miniature porcelain cowboy boots
and some new wigs! The items for sale
change on a very regular basis so take
Family support
Following a successful pilot of our
Supporting Hands service in Bucks,
a £64,955 grant from the National Lottery
has enabled us to expand the service
into Herts.
Supporting Hands offers supportive
companionship, including practical and
emotional assistance to our patients –
children and adults – and their carers.
From helping people to get out of the
house, for example a visit to the garden
centre, offering an extra pair of hands to
the parents of children we care for, to
preparing a light meal or helping with a
bit of gardening, the tasks taken on by
Supporting Hands volunteers help lighten
the load for local people and their families
facing particularly challenging times.
The emotional support and companionship
comes from having time to talk over a cup
of tea which can often be what’s needed
to make life feel less challenging.
All our volunteers are fully trained and
are then matched with a patient/family
who will benefit from their help.
Light up a Life
services
Join us to celebrate and light a candle
in memory of a loved one at one of our
seven Light up a Life services across
Bucks and west Herts. All services are
open to anyone in our community,
not just people whose loved one was
cared for by Rennie Grove.
Epic turnout for
Chilterns 3 Peaks
Challenge
Nearly 900 of you joined us in
September to walk 7, 11 or 20 miles
in our Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge.
Walkers took advantage of the sunshine
and the chance to get together with
friends, colleagues, family, children and
dogs to enjoy a day out taking in the
panoramic views along the Ridgeway
National Trail. Thank you to everyone
who took part or helped to make the
day such as success.
If you are unable to attend
a service but would like to
dedicate a light in memory
of a loved one, please go online to
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
with Rennie Grove
Our donation system is simple and effective
as our shops provide the opportunity for
consumers to bring in their used items
including clothing, shoes, accessories, books,
bric-a-brac, media… the list is extensive.
We can also sell higher value items from
our eBay shop.
Our retail and trading team then take over
and sort and prepare items for recycling.
✓
Stocking a
nylon shopper
made from
two and a half
plastic bottles
We reuse by offering items for sale in
our shops and recycle other items using
alternative sources. Last year we sold
textiles, books, electrical and household
items that were unsuitable for sale in
our shops onto a merchant generating
approximately £162k of income in a year.
We have identified more initiatives to support
reduce, reuse and recycle. These include:
✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
Removing
cellophane
wrap on
greeting cards
Phasing out
glitter and
gold foil on
stationery
Recycling
mobile phones
and spectacles
Working
with Ziffit to
recycle books,
We take every opportunity to work with like-minded partners to support the reduce, reuse
and recycle message and create supporting window displays throughout the year.
Management matters
The day-to-day management of Rennie
Grove is the responsibility of the chief
executive and the senior management
team who are accountable to a board of
trustees. Our team of 12 volunteer trustees
bring a mix of skills and experience in
healthcare, retail, business, finance and
other charities to the governance of
Rennie Grove.
The trustees support, monitor and
challenge the strategic direction and
activities of the charity. They do this
through four meetings of the main board
each year and membership of one or
more governance sub committees:
clinical governance committee, finance,
risk and operations committee and the
governance committee.
A day in the life of…
Jack Short, Communications Officer
“My role is quite varied and although this
is not a ‘typical’ day it gives a snapshot of
what happens when I spend a day filming.”
9am Following weeks of planning and
preparation, my colleague Rachel and I pile
a whole range of equipment into the car
ready for a day on shoot. From cameras and
lighting to tripods and location lists, shoot
days need to be meticulously planned so
we make the most of the time kindly given
to us by patients and family members.
9:30am Set up begins at the first location.
We’re spending the day filming Erika, whose
mother Anne was cared for by Rennie Grove
last year. Two cameras are lined up and
programmed to make the most of the scene.
Lighting equipment is adjusted to flood
the shot in light, but it has to be balanced
just right – too yellow and the shot looks
unnatural, too white and Erika will be
bombarded by brightness. Initial shots
are taken to confirm we’re happy with the
setting before Erika arrives, so that she can
get on with the tough task of talking about
her mum on camera.
10am Erika arrives and we have tea and
a chat so we’re all feeling relaxed and
positive about the day ahead. Shooting
begins with Erika holding photographs
of her and her mum up to the lens.
These photos create an impact that goes
beyond words on the film – visual indicators
of a loved one lost that paint a picture
for the viewer. Erika also goes through
a recipe book hand-written by her mum,
to demonstrate her mum’s creativity.
10:20am The hardest part begins – we talk
through some questions with Erika that
help the direction of the conversation.
With such
a sensitive
subject, it is
important that
the questions
generate
honesty and emotion, but don’t overstep
the line. Erika talks with admiration and
love as Rachel and I keep an eye on the
cameras to ensure the footage is consistent
in shoot.
11am Erika takes a few moments to relax
as we review samples of the shoot
and when we’re happy we load up the
equipment ready for the next location.
11:45am We’re at Sally’s Sewing Box in
Princes Risborough for a shoot that has
been prearranged with the shop owner.
Erika and Anne came here all the time
and Erika browses as the camera follows
her down memory lane.
1pm We’ve moved on to Shepherd’s Crook,
the pub Erika and Anne went to many
times. Erika tell us about the time her
mum enjoyed a delicious meal here despite
not having much of an appetite because of
her illness.
3pm Our time with Erika comes to a
close with a dog walk in Cowleaze Woods
where she often came with her mum.
Then the video editing begins back in
Rennie House. This can sometimes take
hours but the work pays off as this video
can now be shown at fundraising and
other events to show the community how
Rennie Grove cares for local patients and
their families.
Rennie Grove retail
So much more
than simply a job
in a shop
Here at Rennie Grove Hospice Care
our retailers are just as diverse as the
community and customers they serve.
Creativity, fun and vibrancy are just as
important to us as compassion, customer
service and sensitivity.
Rennie Grove retailers forge connections
across their local community. From daily
shoppers and donation droppers to story
sharers and family carers – our special
teams welcome all types of people with
all kinds of reasons for visiting into their
working lives each day.
Our retailers are part of a great network
of colleagues who each add their own
skills to the mix and are happy to share
them with others. They are supporters
of great causes like sustainable fashion,
social inclusion and bringing in the
community to raise funds that support
Rennie Grove and its work.
The total number
of different window
mum Amanda’s wish to make sure they
With support from Rennie Grove, Amanda,
who was diagnosed with lung cancer, was
able to enjoy one of her favourite times of
the year with her family.
James, Amanda’s son, recalls “Mum’s main
aim was to get past Christmas with all her
had the best Christmas ever”.
Initially the line is being piloted in
St Albans and Harpenden with a view to
rolling it out across Bucks in the not too
distant future.
The phone line is run by friendly
volunteers who have been trained in
conjunction with the Samaritans and
who are supervised by our team of family
support professionals. Our volunteers
provide a supportive and non-judgmental
listening ear for people in St Albans and
Harpenden coming to terms with their
grief who want someone to talk to.
The phone service is open on Tuesdays
and Fridays between 1:30pm and 4pm.
You don’t have to be “known” by Rennie
Grove to use the phone line. The only
criterion is that you live in the St Albans
and Harpenden area and have been
affected by bereavement.
So please call 01727 638008 if
you find yourself needing to talk.
Origin
Charity
Week
We are very proud to be the chosen charity for Bucks based company,
Origin, who recently hosted a week of exciting fundraising activities.
Staff organised bake sales, pamper sessions, a dress down day and
donated pre-loved clothes for our charity shops, with Origin match
funding every pound staff raised. It’s thanks to partnerships
like this that we’re able to continue offering our vital services to
patients in the community.
If you work for a company
and you would like
