PROFILE FOR UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS
SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
Hong Kong Academy is an international, independent,
non-profit co-educational pre-K-12 day school. As an IB
World School, HKA is authorised to offer the Primary
Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes (IBPYP,
IBMYP, IBDP). Founded in 2000, our inclusive approach to
admissions ensures that we maintain a diverse learning
environment in which each of our students is empowered
to pursue his or her pathways to individual excellence.
HKA’s school year begins in mid-August and dismisses in
mid-June.
STUDENT BODY AND FACULTY
Our student and staff populations reflect our commitment
to internationalism, diversity and inclusion, with no
single nationality representing a majority. Approximately
17% of our students are new to HKA each year, and the
average faculty tenure at the school is 6 years. Class sizes
are intentionally kept small, with a faculty/student ratio
of 1:7 in the Secondary School; this allows teachers to
provide individualised instruction and encourage
students to leverage their passions, interests and
strengths as entry points into inquiry and reflection.

PATHWAYS TO GRADUATION
In alignment with our mission and core values, HKA
encourages each student to determine the best-fit pathway
to graduation upon entry into Grades 11 and 12 after
completion of the IBMYP at the end of Grade 10. Our
graduates all receive the HKA Diploma and GCD Certificate,
and the majority also seek external recognition by pursuing
the IB Diploma; others opt to complete up to six IB Courses.
ACCREDITATIONS AND AUTHORISATIONS
GLOBAL CITIZEN DIPLOMA
HKA is the only school in Hong Kong to offer the Global
Citizen Diploma (GCD), an externally recognised
qualification that highlights the many ways that students
engage in responsible action. Designed to validate the
contributions of individuals and groups with the passion
and perseverance to make positive change in their local
and global communities, the GCD provides students with
an opportunity to showcase up to 16 elements of global
citizenship. Earning the GCD requires a process of
deliberate reflection as students re-examine their
experiences, synthesise their learning and make sense of
their education which they can then share as a part of
their post-secondary application process.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In Grades 9-12, students participate in a range of service and action groups, competitive sports and performing arts masterclasses.
HKA athletes participate and compete in international and local leagues for basketball, football, volleyball, cross country, golf,
swimming, and track and field. In addition to sports, debate and public speaking, Model UN, and mathematics and reading
competitions are all on offer for students to stretch themselves and develop skills related to subject-area content. Student-led
action groups on campus include the Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Action for Refugees, Project Plastic, Global Citizen Diploma
Student Leadership Team, Student Media Team and Student Council; students are encouraged to propose ideas for clubs and
activities throughout the year and are supported by faculty and staff members who serve as mentors.

The Global Citizen Diploma is required for graduation. All
IBDP candidates must also complete the IBDP core to be
eligible to earn an IB Diploma. This includes taking Theory
of Knowledge, for which they will earn one credit, as well
as completing the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity
and Service requirements
TRANSCRIPTS, RANKINGS AND
GPA EQUIVALENTS
Hong Kong Academy does not rank its students or
provide percentile/decile information, nor are GPAs
created. Marks are based on the International
Baccalaureate system of 1-7 and credit is given for
successful completion of courses with a grade of 3 or
higher. Transfer students have their previous
transcript/school reports verified and appropriate credit
is awarded (not stated on HKA transcript). Some
students may be waived from certain requirements and
this will be indicated on the transcript.
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION AND
WORLD LANGUAGES
English is the primary medium of instruction. In the
Secondary School, students select one of three World
Languages to study: Mandarin, Spanish or French. In
addition, some students elect to independently study
their mother tongue language in order to obtain a
bilingual IB Diploma.

HKA believes that students and their families should make well-informed and
reasonable university and college application choices. As such, HKA
encourages students to apply to no more than nine institutions. Admissions
Offices receiving an application from an HKA student can be assured it is a
serious application that reflects much thought and research.
