Hornby railway crossing in a 

bid to make it safer for school 

children.

Religious groups to have their say 


RELIGIOUS GROUPS across 

the city will be consulted over 

the plan to transform land in 

Templeton into a large cemetery. 

City council staff will meet 

with more than 40 groups later 

this month to gauge views on 

the proposed development, 

which would provide for the 

city’s burial needs over the next 

60 years. 

It is planning to turn about 

two-thirds of the 100ha site it 

owns at 173 Maddisons Rd into 

a cemetery, while the rest would 

be developed as a sports park. 

Estimates show the city has 

about 10 years 

left before its 

cemeteries are at 

full capacity.

the reason for 

the consultation

before the design work starts. 

The city council aims to 

obtain early pre-design feedback 

from key stakeholders, with 

a draft development plan

currently negotiating with 

adjacent landowners on 

purchasing additional land 

to enable more space for the 

cemetery. 

The spokesman said the 

feedback on the plan has 

generally been positive but 

people are keen to get more 

details.

feedback on the cemetery. 

“It is not right next to us, it is a 

bit removed. It is not bordering 

any of the Templeton residents.” 

She said it would be different 

if the cemetery was increased 

in size to such an extent that it 

comes up to residents’ property 

boundaries. 

The city council is also engaging 

with Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri 

Rūnanga and Te Taumutu 

Rūnanga. It also plans to have 

initial discussions with funeral 

directors, groups representing 

lost babies and infants, green 

and natural burial groups and 

the RSA. 

A meeting was scheduled 

to be held yesterday with 

Templeton residents over the 

plan.

Painter produces 

artwork to raise 

cash for charity

much to Ms Burdett’s relief, 

but she continued painting 

and compiling artwork for the 

calendar. 

She developed a passion 

for art when she was at high 

school in Whakatane, and says 

painting is not 

hard for her – 

she just lets her 

feelings flow on 

to the canvas.

hope. 

“It had to be beautiful and 

feminine,” she said. 

Family is an important part 

of Ms Burdett’s life and the 

inspiration behind her art, 

which is mostly done using oil 

paint. 

“Every painting has a story, 

people may not get it, but 

they just have to use their 

imagination,” she said.

Each painting generally takes 

Ms Burdett about two days to 

complete, depending on how 

“hyped-up” she is about it. 

Many of the pieces in the 

calendar are colourful and 

dedicated to members of her 

family, including her late 

husband Peter, who died in 2009 

from pancreatic 

cancer. 

After Peter 

died, she 

dedicated a 

calendar to him 

and painted 

another one for 

the CD Kids Hospital Appeal in 

2017. 

Ms Burdett said her art may 

not be perfect, but that is part of 

the beauty of it. 

“This is not perfect, I’m not 

perfect, but this is through my 

eyes, and that’s how I like it,” she 

said.

Crossing to get safety gates

whether children from 

Hornby Primary will be 

affected by the changes 

as he does not know how many 

pupils use the crossing.

Pool to stay open longer 


TEMPLETON RESIDENTS 

calling for their swimming pool 

to be open for longer over the 

summer season will have their 

wish granted. 

But they will have to fork out 

$80 for a membership if they 

want to use the pool. 

The city council has established 

a new system where memberships 

to use the swimming 

pool can be purchased for $80 

per household. 

An exception to the rule is 

casual users will be allowed to 

use the facility as long as they are 

with a member. 

This year the swimming pool 

will be open for 19 weeks - a 

large increase compared to previous 

years where it was only open 

for 11 weeks over the summer. 

The pool will now be open 

from November 16 to March 29 

- allowing the pool to be utilised 

by Templeton School in the first 

term. 

City council’s head of recreation, 

sports and events Nigel Cox 

said while the pools hours will 

be increased, there will be no additional 

costs. 

It costs $36,000 per year to run 

the pool. 

The changes come after the city 

council received feedback calling 

for longer swimming pool hours 

in Templeton. 

The Norman Kirk Memorial 

Pool in Lyttelton, Sumner Community 

Pool, Belfast Pool and 

Port Levy have a similar system 

with memberships ranging from 

$60-$150. 

Templeton Residents’ Association 

treasurer Jolene Eagar said it 

has not been discussed with the 

community and she is not sure 

where people will stand on the 

issue. 

Earlier this year the TRA was 

approached by the city council 

to ask if they were interested 

in helping manage the pool to 

increase hours - but Mrs Eagar 

said it has not heard from the 

city council since then. 

Due to the new system, the 

pool will solely be run by the city 

council. 

Mrs Eagar said she would have 

preferred the city council to ask 

people how they felt about the 

membership system rather than 

going ahead with it. 

“We don’t want to see disappointed 

kids walking away from 

the pool because they don’t have 

a card or they are not with someone 

with a card,” she said. 

But resident Mel Himin, 

who has a 4-year-old child and 

6 month-old baby, said if the 

membership system is a way the 

pool can be kept open for longer

all key holders, sell memberships 

and carry out necessary cleaning 

and maintenance.

in alleged 

home invasion 

over cellphone

THE SALE OF a second-hand 

cellphone resulted in a home 

invasion involving a gun and 

baseball bat. 

Police allege two patched 

Bandidos gang members 

bashed down the door of a house 

on Curletts Rd, Sockburn, and 

assaulted a man. 

Two brothers, Rawiri Takuira 

Kiri, 26, of Waltham, and Lee 

Teomaori Kiri, 30, of Aranui, 

have been charged over the 

alleged incident, which is 

understood to be a dispute over a 

cellphone which was sold but did 

not work properly. 

They appeared in the district 

court on Monday, facing joint 

charges of possessing a firearm 

and armed robbery with a 

baseball bat. 

Police allege they stole $15 

from the male victim, who was 

assaulted during the incident. 

More charges are likely. 

They were remanded in custody 

until December, when they are 

next due to appear in court. 

It is understood the male 

victim’s parents and two children 

were at home at the time of the 

attack.

Sockburn’s Eloise Smith, a 

Canterbury University doctoral 

student, needed to keep in 

mind at the Asia-Pacific 3MT 

Competition in Brisbane. 

The ‘three minute thesis’, 

or 3MT, was an annual 

competition in which postgraduate 

students explained 

their thesis in 3min with just 

one presentation slide. 

A university-level thesis can 

be up to 80,000 words. There 

were 56 finalists from Australia, 

New Zealand, Oceania and 

Asia in the competition. 

A Canterbury University 

spokeswoman said it was proud 

of how Miss Smith represented 

her research and the university. 

In late July, she won the 

College of Science round of the 

UC 3MT competition. 

In her presentation Weak 

or What?, Miss Smith covered 

her research into swallowing 

disorders. 

Swallowing disorders have 

the ability to impact a person’s 

ability to eat and drink safely 

and can occur as a result of 

a stroke, brain injury and 

cerebral palsy. 

Miss Smith’s research looks 

to identify new ways to assess 

swallowing disorders with a 

focus on measuring muscle 

activity. 

Catchpole signs off after 

60 years with Hornby

JOHN CATCHPOLE took a lastminute 

ticket to the Canterbury 

Rugby Awards night last week 

and ended up being named 

volunteer of the year. 

“My son offered me a ticket 

because he said his wife couldn’t 

go and I thought it would be a 

good night then all of a sudden I 

hear my name being called.” 

The outgoing Hornby Rugby 

Club president said it was quite a 

surprise. 

“It was an amazing feeling, 

totally overwhelming.” 

Mr Catchpole, who was born 

and raised in Hornby, first joined 

the club in 1959 as an under-5 

player. 

A talented first-five eighth, he 

moved through the ranks at the 

club and made his senior debut 

the year Hornby was promoted 

to the top-flight of Christchurch 

rugby in 1975. 

He played senior rugby until 

1983 before a fourth grade A side 

which went unbeaten for five 

seasons and a total of 83 games. 

He was still playing into his 

40s but joined the committee as 

club captain in 1998 and became 

president in 2005, a position he 

held until the end of this winter.

“The timing was right, it’s been 

60 years in the club and I retire 

from work at the end of the year 

so it just felt right. 

“Hornby has always been home 

for me, we moved out of the area 

five years ago and went to Prebbleton 

but I still work in Hornby. 

“My favourite saying is that 

we give people a chance to get 

involved and participate. 

“The club has been a big part

friends, people I see regularly for 

a drink on a Friday night.” 

Mr Catchpole, who was made 

a life member in 2012, said he 

would still be a regular on the 

sidelines. 

“The great thing is that I’ll be 

able to go and watch any games 

I want now but I’ll certainly still 

be around the place, it’s like a 

second home.”

A BOLD plan to stop vehicle 

licence plate thefts may have 

come unstuck. 

The Hornby Community 

Patrol is set to ask businesses to 

fit number plates with anti-theft 

screws to their fleet vehicles. 

It aims to stop people stealing 

licence plates, fitting them to 

other vehicles, and carrying out 

crimes to avoid being identified. 

Car sales yards in Hornby 

will also be asked to take part. 

The anti-theft screws cost $5 to 

install. 

But car dealers and other 

businesses contacted by Western 

News were not enthusiastic 

about the idea. Avon City Ford 

chief executive John Luxton 

said it has never had issues with 

number plate thefts.

Village residents got behind their 

team as part of a in-house talent 

show. 

Lady Wigram’s Got Talent was 

organised by residents John and 

Linda Tucker. 

About 15 people performed 

as part of the evening, which 

included a group of residents 

known as The Wigram Squad, 

who acted out rugby moves 

to the Crusaders theme song 

Conquest of Paradise. 

Mrs Tucker said the 

performance had “hilarious” 

scrums, a try and even a couple 

of “magnificent” kicks which 

sent the ball straight into their 

theatre production manager 

Judith McCleary’s hands in the 

audience. 

“They had been rehearsing for 

weeks. They acted their part very 

seriously, which made it even 

funnier and it was all in slow 

motion,” she said.

RICCARTON KNIGHTS prop 

Delane Luke’s return to rugby 

league has seen him selected for 

the New Zealand Universities 

tour of Fiji this week. 

The team will play against two 

Fiji Universities teams and an 

Australian Universities team – 

and the prop is eager to prove 

himself. 

“I only got back into rugby 

league this year, and if you’d 

told me at the start that I’d 

get the chance to represent 

my country at the end of it, I 

wouldn’t have believed you,” the 

22-year-old said. 

“I’m very honoured to have 

this chance.” 

Luke is completing a Bachelor 

of Arts, majoring in te reo 

Maori and indigenous studies at 

Canterbury University. 

He played junior league for 

Halswell before a European 

rugby trip with the St Thomas’ 

under-16s enticed him to switch 

codes. 

He tried his hand in the 

midfield and at loose-forward 

before being converted into a 

prop. 

However, with several friends 

playing league at Riccarton, he 

decided this year was the right 

time to get back into it. 

“I started off in the Bs and

of Luke’s club games without 

telling him they would be there, 

and he found out after the game 

he had made the team. 

“It’s an exciting opportunity 

and I can’t wait to make the 

most of it.” 

Daniel hits the books after 

bringing home third NZ title 


CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High 

boxer Daniel Meehan is happy 

to juggle his boxing dream with 

studying for his NCEA level one 

exams. 

Fresh from winning his third 

consecutive national amateur 

boxing title, the 16-year-old 

was hitting the books last week 

rather than the punching bag. 

Daniel, who trains at Papanui’s 

Smiling Tigers Boxing Gym, 

won the junior under-60kg New 

Zealand title at the tournament 

in Hastings and was also named 

most scientific junior boxer. 

“It felt good to win another 

national title,” he said. 

“I didn’t know much about my 

two opponents, so I just tried to 

control what I could control. 

“I just wanted to control the 

ring (with foot movement) and 

use my jab to keep scoring. Be as 

scientific as possible.” 

He is following in the footsteps 

of his father, Danny, who had 

more than 120 fights when he 

was based in Manawatu. 

Daniel has been training for 

the past six years under Smiling 

Tigers coach Mark Fuller. 

He initially started hitting 

pads with his dad in the garage 

and progressed from there. 

He has big goals. “I’d like to 

compete at the Commonwealth 

Games in 2022,” he said.

Fuller, who was also one of 

the Canterbury coaches at the 

tournament, said Daniel has a 

bright future. “He has a great 

work ethic, and, yes, he has 

the genes that help him but he 

is extremely dedicated,” Fuller 

said. 

“He’s a smart boxer in there 

and knows what he is about. I 

don’t think the Commonwealth 

Games is too big of a goal for 

him if he keeps on this path.”

The Provedore is presented in 

an open plan style with plenty of 

natural light, cobbled walkways 

between outlets, and is intended 

to provide a unique alternative to

but now that retailers can see it,

trying to achieve,” says assistant

Tasty Bites 

Moving veges to centre stage 

No longer the side dishes, the back-up dancers or the understudies, vegetables 

have earned their place front and centre on the plate as this pizza shows 

Broccoli margherita pizzas 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

1 x quantity broccoli dough (see 

following basic recipe) 

⅔ cup (50g) finely grated 

parmesan 

300g cherry tomatoes, torn in 

half and squeezed to remove the 

seeds 

¼ cup (4g) oregano leaves 

Extra virgin olive oil, for 

drizzling 

2 x 125g fresh mozzarella balls, 

torn 

Basil leaves, to serve 

Finely grated parmesan, plus 

extra to serve (optional) 

Directions 

Preheat oven to 200 deg C. 

Line 2cm x 30cm round oven 

trays with non-stick baking 

paper. 

Divide the dough in half and 

press on to each tray to make 

2cm x 28cm round pizza bases. 

Bake for 20min or until firm and 

slightly golden. 

Sprinkle the bases with 

parmesan and top with the 

tomatoes and oregano. 

Drizzle with a little oil. 

Return the pizzas to the oven 

and bake for a further 20min or 

until golden. 

Top warm pizzas with the 

mozzarella and sprinkle with 

basil and extra parmesan to 

serve. 

Cook’s notes: You can add 

your favourite toppings to this 

pizza. 

Just avoid anything that might 

make the broccoli base turn soft 

(such as tomato puree). 

It’s best to stick to fresh 

tomatoes with the seeds and 

some of the juice squeezed out. 

Try sprinkling over preroasted 

pumpkin, eggplant 

(aubergine) or zucchini 

(courgette). 

To have these pizza bases on 

standby for busy days, bake 

them for the first 20min, then 

cool, wrap and freeze for later 

use. 

Broccoli dough 

Ingredients 

600g broccoli florets (about two 

heads), roughly chopped (see 

cooks notes) 

¾ cup (90g) almond meal 

(ground almonds) 

½ cup (25g) finely grated 

Parmesan 

3 eggs 

Sea salt and cracked black 

pepper 

Directions 

In small batches, place 

the broccoli in a food 

processor and process until 

finely chopped. Transfer to a 

large bowl. 

Add the almond meal, 

parmesan, eggs, salt and pepper 

to the broccoli and mix well to 

combine. 

Makes one quantity. 

Cook’s notes: It’s best if you 

don’t add too much of the 

broccoli stem to this dough. 

A floret with roughly 6-8cm of 

stem is great. 

Adding extra can make the 

dough watery. 

You can swap half, or all, of 

the broccoli for cauliflower if 

you prefer. 

Again, just don’t use too much 

of the stem.
