Afternoon outing a<br />
chance to reminisce<br />
Residents from Cheviot Rest Home<br />
celebrated World Senior Appreciation<br />
day in style recently.<br />
Eight residents travelled to Waipara<br />
Springs Winery for an oldfashioned<br />
afternoon tea.<br />
The highteastyle spread included<br />
scones with jam and cream, cucumber<br />
sandwiches, salmon pate and alush<br />
ginger cake with creamcheese icing.<br />
One of the residents, Margaret Moore,<br />
said they thoroughly enjoyed the twohour<br />
afternoon tea, with lots of laughs<br />
and some reminiscing.<br />
‘‘We even had rain, hail, and sunshine<br />
because we were there for so long<br />
enjoying ourselves.’’<br />
Cheviot Rest Home, which recently<br />
won the Aged Advisor Best Small Aged<br />
Care Facility for the fourth year in arow,<br />
takes regular trips around the Hurunui<br />
area, including visits to beaches, rivers<br />
and local gardens.<br />
They have picnics and visit local cafes,<br />
and enjoy exploring different cuisines<br />
and cultures.<br />
Every month the residents experience<br />
ethnic meals and learn about cultural<br />
practices from other parts of the world.<br />
In celebration of the current Rugby<br />
World Cup, they have been enjoying<br />
Japanesestyle food.<br />
Residents with an interestinmaking the<br />
Waimakariri district moreagefriendly<br />
are being sought.<br />
The Waimakariri District Council is<br />
recruitingfor its agefriendly advisory<br />
grouptohelp with introducing the<br />
recently adopted Waimakariri Agefriendly<br />
Plan.<br />
Community development adviser<br />
Madeleine Burdon says the new plan<br />
summarisesfeedback from workshops,<br />
presentationsand asurvey undertaken<br />
towards the end of lastyear.<br />
She saysthe plan identifies priority<br />
activitiesinoutdoor spaces and public<br />
buildings, transport and mobility,<br />
housing,social participation, respect<br />
and socialinclusion,civicparticipation<br />
and employment,communication and<br />
information, community support and<br />
health services.<br />
‘‘We’re seekingdiverse community<br />
members to join the advisory group.<br />
‘‘As well as managing theplan, the<br />
groupwill also advise the council about<br />
opportunities andissues affecting older<br />
people,’’she says.<br />
Idealcandidates willbeinvolved in<br />
olderpeople’sissues or organisations<br />
representing olderpeople, have skills to<br />
help monitor implementation,<br />
participate in community organisations,<br />
and are willing to shareinformationwith<br />
theirnetworks.<br />

TheChristchurch <strong>North</strong>ern Corridor team is widening the Waimakariri Bridge. Forthe third<br />
concretepour on the newbridgedecksweneed to closethe northbound bridgefrom Friday<br />
18 <strong>October</strong> until Monday21<strong>October</strong>. Please expect slowmoving traffic in both directions on<br />
this partofSH1 during the weekend.<br />
From Fridayevening18<strong>October</strong> to Mondaymorning 21 <strong>October</strong>,both north and southbound traffic will be<br />
(contraflow) on the southbound bridge:one lane in each direction.<br />
TheTramRoad on-ramp will be closed from around 7am to 6pm on 19 and 20 <strong>October</strong>.This is to reducethe<br />
traffic flowonSH1 beforethe bridge.<br />
