Golfers show plenty of drive in rebuild
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Having members huddleina
container in the middleofwinter
to socialise after around of golf
has not been idealfor asmall
NorthCanterbury golf club.
But Scargill GolfClub
members are now enjoyingan
inviting, warm, and bright
clubhouse,which can also double
as ameeting place for the
community.
The clubhouse and community
hall were victimsofthe
November 2016earthquake. Just
acouple of weeks later,aquake
centred in the ScargillGreta
Valley area finished them off.
The club’sold concrete block
building took ahammering.
Waghorn Builders securedpart
of the building,which club
members used for abit, but with
daylight showing between the
blocks it was obvious the 1960s
building had seen better days.
Club presidentNick Fairbairn
set out to secure funding to boost
the club’s insurancepayout of
$130,000. It was ameagre sum
because the club had followed
many othersafter the 2010
Canterbury quakes in lowering
its insurancecover because
premiums had soared.
‘‘That wasn’tgoing to pay for a
new building,’’ Nick explains.
She turned to the New Zealand
Lottery GrantsBoardfor help,
beingsuccessful with two
applications,and agrant of $5000
from the KateValley Landfill
Fund also boosted the coffers.
Meanwhile,acontainerand
the tractor shed wereput to use
as atemporary homefor
members and gear.
‘‘Wesat in the container for a
bit,but there was not much
socialising going on. It wasmidwinter,’’Nick
says.
Waghorn Builders, which had
helped the community for free
whenthe ScargillGreta Valley
quake hit, such as taking down
damagedchimneys, was given
the rebuild task, which started in
May.
The roof was lifted, the
concrete pad retained and the
building pulled down. It was
rebuilt on the samefootprint.
The Glenmark LionsClub paid
for,and built, averanda along
one side.
‘‘Wehave atiny bit of funding
lefttobuild paths.’’
Nicksays none of what has
beenachieved would havebeen
possible without the huge
voluntary inputand help of Stu
Loe andJack Burrows,who were
on the building committeewith
her.
‘‘Itwas such agood club and
community effort to get this done.
Theyall supported me and
helped. It was justamazing
throughout the process. They
would jump in and roll up their
sleeves at working bees, bring
along theirtractors and all sorts
of gear to helpout.
‘‘That is what small rural
communities are all about, and it
is now afacility for the
community too, not just the club,’’
Nicksays.
The community lost its
community hall to the quakes,
and afterarecent public meeting
Community asset ... Scargill Golf Club president Nick Fairbairn says its new facility is for the community
too, not just the club.
