Welcome

Features

This month the baton has

been passed to me to

write the welcome page.

I’ve been a member of ‘Your Local Lincs’ team

for almost 12 years! As you can imagine I’ve seen

a lot of changes over the years and watched the

magazine evolve in to what it is today.

November is always a busy month for me. Even

though my children are in their late teens, as a

family we still like to go and see a local firework

display. On page 28 we have an interesting article

on the science behind fireworks.

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice

Day is particularly poignant this year as we

commemorate the 75 th Anniversary of the

D-Day Landings and also the 80 th anniversary of

the beginning of World War II. See Major Clive

Candlin’s article on page 16. My Dad is an RAF

veteran and for the past 15 years he has laid

a wreath at the War Memorial in Sleaford on

behalf of the RAF Association which makes me

feel immensely proud.

If you’re anything like me you’ve been

thinking about Christmas for some time now.

On pages 6-9 there are lots of local Christmas

markets and gift fayres where you might find

that extra special present for someone.

Wrap up warm and have a great month!

Julie

Local Christmas Craft Fayres

Just peering around the corner to

Christmas! I hope you don’t think it too

early. As we tiptoe into this season

perhaps you, like me, enjoy spacing out

your purchases a little? If you enjoy looking

around to get something unique and different

then you may love pottering around the local

Christmas fayres, markets and craft shows

that are being held in and near to Sleaford.

There’s lots to choose from. We have

adverts and listings of some of the best local

markets and fayres. With such a wide variety,

you will be spoilt for choice. Hopefully

something to suit everyone’s tastes. Some

charge for entry but most are free.

If you are very well organised and already

have your gifts wrapped and will be shopping

in November 2019 for Christmas 2020

then call me and let me know how you’ve

managed that! I’d love some tips!

Community News

The Second Chance Charity Shop has been in

Sleaford since 2008, but has its origin in far

different surroundings. Would you have guessed

Spain? It was started by two intrepid, British Christian

ladies. They saw that there were people in need and

decided that the way to help was to open a charity shop.

A novel idea in Spain at the time. The shop was a success and they opened two more. When they

decided it was time to come home they didn’t leave their care and concern for the needy behind,

they opened a Second Chance here in Sleaford.

Over the years, Second Chance has had a policy of offering goods for sale at low prices, but

with consistently high quality donations from the town and surrounds, profits have been good.

This has allowed us to help many other charities and organisations. At present Second Chance

regularly support three main charities:

EDUCATION FOR LIFE - Providing education for children in Kenya.

BETEL - A drug rehabilitation charity which works throughout the UK.

EVERGREEN SLEAFORD - providing volunteer befrienders for isolated people.

In addition, they give grants to small charities and community organisations in and around

Sleaford such as self-help groups, schools and organisations offering help to disadvantaged

people, of all ages.

It goes without saying that none of this could happen without volunteers who work, not only

to sell goods, but to offer a smile, a listening ear, a hug and the occasional cup of tea to those

customers who need it. New Life Church, Sleaford, gives administrative help and advice plus use

of its premises for events and lots support and encouragement.

Find Second Chance on Boston Road, just off Southgate. Open weekdays 9:30am to 3:30pm,

Saturdays 9:30am to 4pm.

Armistice Day and

Remembrance Sunday 2019

The Sleaford and District Branch of The Royal British

Legion will once again hold the annual remembrance

Sunday parade and service on Sunday 10 th November. The

parade will form up on Station Road at 10:15am ready to step

off at 10:30am. The parade will include contingents from the

serving military and Army Cadets and Air Cadets from Sleaford;

various Veterans Associations and Youth Organisations, marching

behind the Boys’ Brigade Band to the War Memorial in the Market Square for the service, which

will be conducted by the Rev Philip Johnson, vicar of St Denys’ Church.

The band of the Salvation Army will play the music for the service. Veterans who wish to

march in this parade should report to the Parade Marshall on Station Road and he will instruct

which contingent the individual should join for the march. At the end of the service the parade

will march past the Reviewing Officer to the NKDC car park and be dismissed from parade.

This year commemorates the 75 th Anniversary of the D Day Landings and also the 80 th

anniversary of the beginning of World War II. The War Memorial in the Market Square bears

the names of 176 individuals from Sleaford who gave their lives in the two World Wars. A

number of civic dignitaries, military commanders and local organisations will lay their wreaths

on the War Memorial during the service.

It is hoped that the community of Sleaford and surrounding areas will once again give their

magnificent support to the occasion. Service sheets will be available from members of The Royal

British Legion Branch in the Market Square so that as many as possible can take part and follow

the service.

This year Armistice Day will fall on the Monday after Remembrance Sunday, the 11 th

November 2019. A short service will be held on the Market Square but wreaths will not be laid

as they will have been laid on Remembrance Sunday.

With thanks to NP Entertainment who are kindly providing the P.A. system for the service. All

are welcome to attend. Any changes to these arrangements will be notified in the local press.

Parsnip Soup

Ingredients

1 tbsp olive oil

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

600g/1lb 5oz parsnips, cut into

1cm/½-inch cubes

½ tsp dried red chilli flakes, plus

extra to serve

1 litre/1¾ pints hot vegetable stock

200ml/7fl oz double cream

salt and freshly ground black pepper

For the croutons

3 thick slices good bread, such as

sourdough, cut into 2.5cm/1-inch

pieces

1 tbsp olive oil

55g/2oz Gruyere cheese, finely

grated

Preparation: Less than 30 mins

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Serves: 4

An easy luxurious

autumnal soup

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Heat

the oil in a heavy-based saucepan over a medium

heat. Add the chopped garlic and cubed parsnips

and fry for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. When

they are golden add the chilli flakes and fry for one

more minute.

2. Pour in the stock, stir and bring everything to

a simmer. Cover with the lid and cook for 12 -15

minutes, or until the parsnips are tender.

3. Meanwhile, for the croutons, place the pieces of

bread on a baking tray in a single layer and drizzle

with the olive oil. Sprinkle over the cheese, and

season with salt and pepper. Bake for 5-10 minutes

until crisp and golden.

4. Remove the soup from the heat and blitz with a

stick blender until smooth. Return to the heat, stir

in the cream and heat through gently. Season to

taste with salt and pepper. Serve the soup topped

with the croutons and a sprinkling of chilli flakes

for a little more kick.

Enjoy!

Let’s Talk Local

Walking into Ian Stark’s industrious workshop there’s

a wonderful smell of fresh wood. Amongst the

different pieces of wood there are unusual tables

dotted around. In the middle of his workshop a magnificent ten

foot table made up of 4 huge planks of wood.

Is this what you’re working on right now?

Yes! A customer had to have an English walnut tree felled in his

garden and he’s decided to have a large dining table made with it.

It’s going to look amazing! This timber has been drying out for over

a year to get to this stage.

Is any job too big or too small?

I never shut the door on small jobs. People do have to wait for a short

while and may have to go on a waiting list. I’ve been told that people

like me are hard to come by. I don’t employ anyone or subcontract.

Bespoke Furniture and joinery is anything from restoration on listed

buildings to custom designed, free standing and fitted furniture.

Ian Stark -

Bespoke remembrance table

A waiting list - you must have a good reputation?

60% of my work comes from word of mouth or repeat custom. The rest is new custom from Your Local

Lincs magazine, it’s the only place I advertise. I also have interest from my website and social media.

Some material prices have doubled in the last 10 years, bespoke furniture isn’t cheap!

Why the name Northmark?

I wanted something different - My Dad suggested I used names of Sleaford streets, Mum and Dad live

on Mark Avenue and I had lived on North Parade at the time. Hence Northmark.

How long have you been in business in Sleaford?

Eleven years. I worked and trained in Norwich before I moved to Sleaford. I suppose I ‘cut my teeth’ with

bespoke furniture all over Norfolk. I’m not a city person, a country lad at heart I think.

What do you do when you’re not at work?

I have done lots of river and lake fishing. I love spending time with my 11 year old daughter and my

family. Tracey, my partner, and I do the gym three times a week. Family trips to cinema are my favourite.

Any tips for other business owners?

It’s hard to shut off from work when you own your own business. It’s only in the last 8 months that I’ve

been able to try and shut off at weekends. Building a business and being solely responsible is stressful.

I am so thankful to Tracey and my parents who have helped me keep my sanity. Support from your

family is imperative.

What’s your work ethos?

I like honesty - I have a conscience and I have to sleep at night! If I have to face a problem I will. You

have to love what you do. I don’t hide behind anything and I like things right. Karma!!

Plastic Footprint

Simple Ways to Reduce Your

Plastic Footprint...

Stop straws - If a straw is a must, instead of a plastic one purchase a

reusable stainless-steel straw and carry it with you.

Invest in reusable produce bags - A single plastic bag can take 1,000

years to degrade. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag but be sure

to wash them often.

Give up the gum - Chewing gum is made of a synthetic rubber which is

actually plastic!

Buy boxes over bottles - If your laundry detergent comes in a box it

will be more easily recycled than a plastic bottle.

Buy from bulk bins - If possible, purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and

rice from bulk bins using your own container or bag. Not only will you save

on packaging you'll also save money.

Take your own cup to coffee shops - Some establishments offer a

reduction in price for this!

Ditch the disposables - Disposable nappies are a huge source of landfill. Modern cloth

nappies are nothing like the monstrosities of yesteryear. Check them out, reduce your baby's

carbon footprint and save money in the process.

Squeeze your own - Make your own fresh

squeezed juice or eat fruit instead of buying

for the environment.

lunch in reusable containers and bags.

Use a real razor - with replaceable blades

instead of a plastic disposable razor.

These are all simple steps but if more of us

follow them they have the potential to make a

big impact on our joint plastic footprint.

The Science of Fireworks

Most of us love watching fireworks, but have you ever thought about how

rockets work? It’s a fascinating science and if you read on, you’ll be able

to amaze your friends in the pub after attending your local display.

Fireworks are essentially small missiles designed to explode in a controlled and

colourful way. The word ‘firework’ originates from the Greek word pyrotechnics,

which means, ‘fire art’ or ‘fire skill’; and modern rocket designs require both in huge

amounts. Rockets mostly consist of five main parts.

The tail or stick - This protrudes from the bottom and ensures the

firework shoots in a straight line, which is important for two reasons: first,

so that the rocket doesn’t fly off in a random direction, and injure someone;

and second, because it aids accuracy and precision when creating complex displays.

Fuse - This is the part that allows the firework to be ignited safely. It allows a time

delay before the main part of the firework (the charge) begins to burn. This charge

ignites other, smaller fuses that make the interesting, colourful parts of the firework

(the effects) explode a little later. In a basic rocket, the main fuse consists of a piece of

paper or fabric that you light with a match. In a complex public firework display, fuses are lit

by electrical contacts known as wirebridge fuseheads. When the firework technician pushes

a button, an electric current flows along a wire into the fusehead, which ignites the main fuse.

Electrical ignition has the advantage it can be done at a very safe distance.

Charge - This is actually a fairly crude explosive designed to blast the rocket up into the sky.

Some rockets travel at speeds as fast as a fighter jet. The charge is usually made up of tightly

packed, coarse explosive gunpowder (known as black powder) and simply sends the firework high

into the air, clear of spectators; it’s not responsible for the spectacular colours.

Effect - This is the business end of the firework.

A single firework may have just one effect, or

several, packed into separate compartments

which fire off in sequence, ignited by a time-delay

fuse. Effects are explosives too, but different from

the main charge. Each effect is made up of more

loosely packed, finer explosive material, often

fashioned into separate ‘stars’, which make up the

small, individual, colourful explosions from a larger

firework. The arrangement of patterns and colours

depend on how each effect is made and packed.

Head - This is the top part of the firework which

contains the effect or effects. Sometimes the head

has a pointed nosecone to make the firework faster

and more aerodynamic and improve the chance of it

going in a straight line.

However you choose to enjoy the fireworks this

year, remember safety should always be paramount.

Follow the firework code.

Home Fragrance

What’s the first thing a guest notices when they walk into your home?

Your antique coat stand? The ornate mirror? The pristine hardwood flooring? No,

it’s actually the smell. Smell is our most powerful sense and will override the other

four senses if something foul wafts our way. So, if your house smells like musty wet dog, stinky

shoes, or last night’s fish supper, none of the other details will matter. How your home smells

leaves an impression on visitors so it’s nice to make that impression a good one, and of course

it’s nicer for you too; after all you live there!

There’s a whole industry devoted to home fragrance, so you have lots of choice. But the

secret to a nose-friendly atmosphere isn’t synthetic scents. Aside from being overly perfumed,

they often contain chemicals that can irritate some sensitive people, particularly asthma and

migraine sufferers.

Let the outside in - The simplest most effective way to freshen up your home is to open

doors and windows, yet very few of us do it on a daily basis. Stale air is a health hazard

and a mood zapper. I’m not suggesting that you leave the windows open all day in

November, but just five minutes will give you an instant, and totally free, air refresh.

Grow an indoor herb garden - Fresh herbs such as basil and mint give off a

lovely aroma in the kitchen. If you’re feeling ambitious try planting a herb box

overflowing with marjoram, lemon balm and rosemary. Sweep your hand

across them to agitate the foliage and spread the fragrance around the room.

Chop up a few lemons and limes - For a quick and easy fresh smell, you

can’t beat citrus. Slice a few lemons, limes and oranges into thin wheels and

bake them at a very low temperature for several hours until they are dry to

the touch. You can pretty much forget about them while they are in the oven

except for the fact your house will smell incredible. When they are done you

can make potpourri. Thread some on a string with a cinnamon stick and some

star anise and hang in your kitchen or pop them in a pretty glass bowl.

Bonus tips:

Make citrus salt - Grind the citrus wheels to a powder in a spice grinder and mix with flaked sea salt.

Make citrus sugar - Same as above but mix with sugar.

Make sweets - Dip them in dark chocolate and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.

Buy quality scented candles - Organic beeswax scented candles are very different to

synthetic chemically fragranced varieties. Try them and you won’t look back. If you are

wondering which scents to try, fresh citrus scents have universal appeal; incense and patchouli

are lovely at this time of year. Vanilla has long been named as the most popular choice among

air-freshener companies and in candle form it takes on an even warmer, more mellow quality.

Make your own air freshener - For a quick-fix, all-natural air freshener, fill a pan with water,

add fresh rosemary or lavender and bring to the boil, then simmer for an

hour and let the vapours drift around

the house, scenting the air. Later, you can

let the mixture cool and decant the liquid

into a spray bottle. Store in the fridge

and spritz a little as needed.

Vet’s Voice

Ready for winter?

Even in the colder weather, your furry

friends will be eager to get out and

about. While we want to encourage

you and your pet to enjoy the outdoors this

winter remember that even in this season

contact with other animals can pose a risk to

unvaccinated pets.

Why do you need to vaccinate

your dog? Dogs are social creatures and

enjoy close contact with other dogs. Playing

and wrestling and yes even swimming! If your

dog is not vaccinated, all these activities can

place them at risk of picking up an infection

that can be life-threatening.

Why do you need to vaccinate

your cat? This winter our feline friends

will still be spending time prowling the

neighbourhood, defending their territory and

mixing with other cats. These activities can

make them vulnerable to picking up infections that can make them very ill.

How do vaccines actually work? For the first few

weeks of your pet’s life they will be protected against infection

by the antibodies from their mothers. Once weaned these

antibodies don’t last. When the vaccines are administered,

they trigger your pet’s body to make their own protective

antibodies. However, protection can fade over time and will

need topping up with a booster. This may be through an annual

vaccination or every three years (depending on the vaccine

and the disease). We can advise you on the best frequency and

approach for your pet.

A common myth is that puppy and kitten

vaccinations are for life, this is not the case.

After their initial course and first year booster, pets will vary

in the length of time that their protection lasts.

If your pets vaccinations are out of date or have expired please ask

for information on our 'Boost and Protect' special offer

in November. Let us help you get your pets vaccinations

back on track!

Pets In The Family

According to the animal charity PDSA,

49% of UK adults own a pet with cats,

dogs and rabbits being the most popular.

Having a pet is like having another member of

the family, it’s something you have to look after,

care for and feed. This is particularly important

for children as it teaches them significant life

skills such as caring and understanding the

values and realities of life and death; not just

for animals but people too. Sometimes losing

a pet can be as bad as losing a family member;

however as hard as it is, it will help children

understand, process and deal with loss.

Having a pet is a big responsibility and can be costly but also very rewarding. A dog takes

time and patience to train but can become your loyal, best friend. Pets make great companions

for everyone in the family and particularly for those who live alone. They can have a calming

influence on you and relieve stress, particularly after a long day at work.

Taking a dog out for walk not only improves your fitness but can aid your social life by meeting

like-minded dog walkers. Get the children involved too! Walking a dog for an hour or two will be

far more beneficial to children by getting them out in the fresh air instead of being stuck in the

house on their phones or game consoles.

Pets typically form a special bond with a particular family member and that is usually their

‘favourite’. If I’ve learnt anything from having pets at home - the ‘favourite’ is ordinarily the one

who feeds them!

We would love to see pictures of your pets, please send them in to our socials:

New guide to care and support in Lincolnshire -

A crucial time for information

A

new, updated Lincolnshire Care Services Directory has been published in association

with Lincolnshire County Council, giving readers crucial information on how to access

and pay for local care services.

If you’re concerned about your care options, or just want some more information on what

your choices may be, this Directory can signpost advice, explain how the paying for care system

works and support you to make informed decisions.

The new edition of the Directory and accompanying website gives information on all aspects

of arranging care and support in Lincolnshire, including how to stay independent for as long as

possible, the different care and support options available and what to look for when choosing a

care provider. It also offers guidance on important issues such as paying for care and what financial

assistance may be available from the local authority. There are comprehensive listings of all local

registered care services, plus checklists to help you ask the right questions when visiting services.

For a free copy of the Lincolnshire Care Services Directory, contact the Lincolnshire

Customer Service Centre on: 01522 782155. It is also available from local outlets including

Hospitals, GP surgeries, Age UK and Alzheimer’s Society. It can be downloaded from:

www.carechoices.co.uk and is available in spoken word.

Robert Chamberlain, Managing Director of the Directory’s publisher, Care Choices, commented

“This is an invaluable source of information for anyone considering short-term or long-term care in

Lincolnshire, and contains vital information to help people decide what type of care and support is best for

them. With the current crisis in social care, finding a care service for yourself or a loved one that meets

their needs and is affordable can be a daunting and unfamiliar task. This new Directory has been compiled

to help people understand the process and offer them reassurance at every step of their journey.”

Care Choices is the UK’s largest independent

publisher for social care and adults with additional

needs. It is also the largest publisher of care

directories for local authorities in England.

Tips To Beat Anxiety

Breathe - Don’t fight the racing

heart or sweaty palms, breathe into

it. Place the palm of your hand on

your stomach and breathe slowly

and deeply. The aim is to train your

mind to get used to coping with

panic, which takes the fear of fear

away.

Face your fears - Avoiding fears

makes them seem scarier. By facing

them you should start to make

them fade.

Don’t try to be perfect -

We’re surrounded by images

of perfection on Facebook and

Instagram. It can make us feel very anxious if we perceive our own lives as not measuring up.

Real life is full of stresses; bad days and setbacks happen, and it's important to remember that

life is messy.

Visualise a happy place - Practice closing your eyes and imagine a place of safety and calm.

It might be a beach you love, or a forest, or snuggled up in bed with your puppy. Let the positive

feelings soothe you until you feel more relaxed.

Talk - Sharing fears takes away a lot of their

scariness. Talk to a partner, a friend or a family

member, or if you don’t feel you can talk to

A Better Work-Life Balance

Is your life a balancing act? Does your smart phone extend your working day? Do you feel

that you never have time just for you?

You’re not alone. In the current economic climate, many any people feel anxious that their

jobs are less secure. Companies are taking on fewer staff and those that remain often feel

responsible for picking up the slack.

But even if you have very little choice over the hours you work, you can still improve your life

by concentrating on the areas that you can control.

Schedule downtime - It could be a date night with your partner or a family day out with

the kids. Make it top priority. Don’t cancel and don’t allow interruptions. You’ll feel much better

for some time spent with those you love.

Outsource - Weekends and evenings can easily be taken up with chores. If you can afford it,

employ a cleaner, or a gardener, or someone to do the ironing. If you can’t then insist the rest of

the family help out. Use the time saved to do something you really love, like practice your guitar

or walk the dog. You’ll feel less resentful.

Get up earlier - If you’re the type who leaves it until the very last minute to get out of

bed, set your alarm for just half an hour or an hour earlier each day. Use that time to exercise

or get boring household chores out of the way, freeing up time in the evening.

Make tiny changes - You don’t have to quit your job and move to a croft in the Outer

Hebrides. Just fifteen minutes sitting in the park at lunch time reading a book or listening to

music can go a long way towards increasing your sense of well-being.

Margaret’s story

At Christmas time each year, St Barnabas Hospice encourages people to dedicate a light in

memory of a loved one, which will go on one of their Trees of Life across Lincolnshire.

St Barnabas Hospice is a local independent charity and every year they support more

than 10,500 people across Lincolnshire. St Barnabas needs to raise over half of £11 million a year

to provide its support and care. Over 1,100 volunteers play a crucial role in the charity’s success.

Margaret has volunteered in the St Barnabas Hospice Inpatient Unit in Lincoln for 25 years.

Her husband, John, sadly died in the Hospice three years ago. Margaret's story:

“John had been ill for some time with bowel cancer, which then spread to his spine. He was in so

much pain and I was struggling to lift him, so it was such a relief when he went into the Hospice. I have

volunteered in the Inpatient Unit for 25 years, so I knew he would be in good hands. I felt so cared for

and John’s pain was finally under control. John was at the Hospice when the Torchlight Procession took

place that year. I remember going outside as hundreds of families came past with torches lit for loved

ones. Nurses and patients came outside, and the doors were left open so that other patients on the

ward, like my John, could still hear the pipe band. I have always known about Light up a Life and the

Torchlight Procession, but after losing John they took on a whole new meaning for me. I now donate to

shine a light in John’s memory at Christmas.”

Torchlight Procession: Tuesday 26 th November 7pm. Meet at Clayton Sports Ground, Lee

Road, Lincoln. LN2 4BH. Procession walks through Lincoln and finishes at Lincoln Cathedral.

The History of Sleaford Playhouse...

The Playhouse was built in 1825 for Joseph Smedley

(bookbinder, printer and stationer), who purchased the land

and surrounding tenements for £700. Smedley successfully

managed the Playhouse as a theatre for several years. In January

1841, the theatre was sold to John Hyde (watchmaker) of Sleaford

who managed the Playhouse and succeeded in attracting magicians,

comic singers and touring theatre companies.

Hyde died in June 1853, but by then had sold the Playhouse to Jane Hill of Sleaford and

William Pidd-Fischer (Miller at Money’s Mill). After a short closure, they re-opened the theatre

in 1855 under the management of Mr R.A. Douglas. Attendances however, were small and the

taste for drama had all but disappeared in Sleaford and closure loomed again.

The executors of Hill and Fisher sold the Playhouse, including fixtures and fittings, in August

1856 to Thomas Parry for the bargain price of £380. A year later, the building was bought by

the Church of England to convert it into Sleaford’s first infant school at the cost of £1,085.

Subsequently, the Playhouse has served as a library, an emergency shelter during both world

wars and a government benefits office.

Sleaford Little Theatre bought the Playhouse in 1994 to restore the building to its original

purpose. Enthusiastic members worked hard on the project to provide

the town once more with its very own theatre. While SLT

had sufficient funds to purchase the building and complete

some of the work, additional funding came from the

Foundation for Sports and Arts, Wren Recycling and local

benefactors and sponsors.

The newly restored Playhouse opened to the public in

October 2000 and is one of only two working Georgian

Theatres in the country. Nineteen years later and Sleaford

Little Theatre continues to provide an attractive range of

events at the Playhouse that appeal to a wide variety of tastes.

What a Beauty!

It’s time for Panto in Sleaford...

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a handsome

prince. The prince surrounded himself with beautiful

people who did his bidding, but he became arrogant and selfish. An enchantress, in

disguise, sought to show him that beauty came from within. But when he cruelly dismissed her,

she placed him under a magic spell that turned him into a monstrous beast. The spell could only

be broken if he could find true love, but who could love a beast?

This inspirational pantomime for all the family is packed with originality, comedy, amazing

special effects and features songs from Disney’s musical Beauty and the Beast, The Greatest

Showman, Mamma Mia and Bohemian Rhapsody among others.

Sleaford Little Theatre are giving away a family ticket to see Beauty and The Beast Pantomime

at the historic Sleaford Playhouse on Westgate in Sleaford. Oh yes they are! This magical

production is held between the 5 th -14 th December. The winner will liaise with Sleaford Little

Further to our Phone Scamming edit on page 64 of the October edition of Your Local Lincs magazine,

we have been given further advice as follows:

If you want to check that a call is legitimate and decide to call the company they claim to be from, wait for

10 minutes before calling as it may be possible for the scammers to keep your line open so they are still

on the phone line. The following is an extract from a BBC publication, with some bracketed additions:

Even when you put the phone down, the scammers stay on the line at their end, which means

the line isn’t broken. So, when you think you called your (bank) back, you’re actually still speaking

to the same person (or another person who is part of the con). If you get a call like this, always

check the line first. Phone someone else you know to see if the line has been broken. Or call your

bank from another (non-landline) telephone to see if they really have called you.

Waiting for at least 10 minutes or more will not affect personal security, providing no

personal details have been given to the scammers, resulting in the scammers giving up.

Sleaford U3A celebrates its 20 th Anniversary

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a unique and exciting organisation that gives

people the chance to learn together - not for qualifications, but for the sheer joy of

discovery. Sleaford U3A began back in November 1999, when 51 founder members

started their first special interest groups. Twenty years later, over 425 members now enjoy

everything this vibrant organisation has to offer.

Sleaford U3A is planning a series of celebratory events to mark its 20 th year - beginning with

participation in Sleaford Methodist Church’s Christmas Tree Festival from the 30 th November

-1 st December, where their tree decorations will reflect the diverse activities of over 50 local

U3A groups.

They’ll follow that up on Friday 31 st January 2020, with a special ‘All Members’ meeting at 1pm

at the New Life Centre, Mareham Lane, Sleaford. This will be open to the public, so everyone

can find out more about what U3A does.

There will be stalls and presentations, talks explaining the history of U3A, and entertainment

from their singing and musical groups, tea and coffee will be available, and committee members

will be on hand to answer visitors’ questions.

On the 4 th February 2020 (the date Sleaford became affiliated with the Third Age Trust), there’ll

be a ticket-only event for members, at Sleaford’s Solo Bar. Founder members will be guests of

honour; their legacy bringing local people together to ‘Learn, Laugh and Live!’ for the

Transcript of Colonel Albert

(Bert ) Tennuci’s diary from

September 1944 (retired in 1977)

“I was last in a line of men who tumbled out of the aircraft door that day into the sky above enemy held

Holland. Within seconds of jumping, I was holding myself ready for the thud of landing that would start

me on the biggest parachute operation of the War - and the greatest adventure of my life. It was the

battle of Arnhem.

For nine long months we had prepared our Field Ambulances for just such a day as this. At a little

place called Culverthorpe near Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

In the thrust for Germany, it became vital that the Allies should find the Rhine bridges at Arnhem

intact and, on 15 th September the 1 st Airborne Division were told that they had been picked to capture

the bridges and hold them until the advancing armies could cross. We were confident. Morale was high

and when we were told that the job would last, at most 48 hrs, some of the lads tied a soccer ball

each on their backs, hoping for a game

when it was all over. In fact, it was part of

my equipment. There was a general air

of expectancy when the Field Ambulance

were briefed, the sections dispatched to

their appropriate battalions. The equipment

checked and the containers loaded. This time

there was no last-minute cancellation, as

there had been so many times before.

At 08.30 on the morning of September

17 th we paraded in full kit, carrying our

parachutes. A further check later in the

morning and at midday we took off.”

135 men on operation from 16

Parachute Field Ambulance went in: 6

died, none evacuated; 129 captured.

Sharing Our Stories

The Home Front…

The first months of the Second World War (3 rd September 1939-

1945) were known here as the ‘phoney war’ as very little action

happened. Despite the fact that children had been evacuated,

millions of gas masks, identity cards, ration books and 3 million+

Anderson shelters had been issued, it was the Nazi

invasion of Denmark and Norway in March 1940 when

the Government feared that Britain may be next.

Consequently, with most of the men away fighting, the civil defence of the

country became a ‘Home’ responsibility so all able men not in any of the

Services (or ARP, Fire and other essential Services) were asked on the 14 th May

1940 by Anthony Eden, the Secretary of State for War, to volunteer to join the

Land Defence Force. 250,000 men between the ages of 17 and 65 volunteered

in the first seven days; 1.5 million by July (Lincs to the Past).

Lincolnshire villages and towns had their local volunteers. Issued at first

with just a khaki arm band (LDV) and whatever weapons they could find,

they met after their normal working day, to drill and prepare to repel any

invasion. Churchill later renamed the LDV as the ‘Home Guard’ and uniforms,

garters, boots and weapons were provided. (This, of course, has been enshrined

in the programme “Dad’s Army” under the command of Captain Mainwaring, a Bank

Manager in ‘civvie street’).

In our district, there was a unique attempt to create a Mounted

Home Guard Unit when the Brigadier General of a Cultherthorpe

division suggested that any Germans who ‘invaded’ by parachute could

easily be rounded up by horse riders accessing rural areas that vehicles

could not reach, so in March 1940 the Lincolnshire M. H. G. was formed

(Albert Blanchard of Sleaford was a member). (‘More of Them Days’ by

Henry Brown). Luckily there was no airborne invasion so with further

conscription the MHG was disbanded, although emergency provisions

stored from 1941 to 1945 survived, were discovered and consumed!

A Women’s Home Guard is mentioned in Grantham but they were not given a uniform, only

a badge marked H G; because of this they were denied permission to parade when the H G

disbanded. Feeling belittled, they boycotted the cordoned-off space they’d been offered!

Garden View

Pots of cabbage!

November can be a bit of a grey, miserable

month. I like to inject some colour with winter

bedding plants. A cheerful pot by the front

door can make you smile on the gloomiest

morning. Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months

but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My

favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come

in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple - with either attractive frilly or very spiky

leaves. They pair beautifully with winter-flowering pansies and hardy cyclamen.

Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the

cabbages. Plant a 50cm / 20inch pot with four large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a

central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot and plant one

frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winter-flowering pansies. Finally plant

a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting

display will give you pleasure through November, December and January.

Tips:

• Select a frostproof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions. The

most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most

terracotta will crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof.

• Use a good general-purpose compost.

• Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots.

• Think about gravel - I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my

winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish,

keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation

for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a

little microclimate in which the plants will be happier.

• Water them! The plants will need moisture around their roots so water as

needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots

because the plants are unable to absorb the water. Happy gardening!
