PHILIPPINE PARANORMAL

TRAVEL BUCKET LIST

By Shawn Kliff Sacal

Apart from being one of the most breathtaking natural

wonders of the world, Philippines also holds deep dark secrets

that will certainly leave you awake at night. There’s no denying

that ghost stories have been a part of our years growing up.

Stories passed down from generation to generation that still

give us the creeps.

BIRINGAN CITY, SAMAR

Up for a good scare this year? Don’t worry, we’ve got you

covered! Here are 10 of the most haunted places in the

Philippines.

BALETE DRIVE, QUEZON CITY

Photo from KYRIKITS

This list wouldn’t be complete without the invisible city of

Biringan. If you’re lucky enough, this magical city might open

its gates for you. Locals believe this is the realm of engkantos.

Several stories shared in hushed whispers in fear of retribution

from the inhabitants of the mystic metropolis have been passed

on to tourists for their safety. For those fortunate to have

had a glimpse of the city, its architecture is considered to be

unparalleled in the world. This is one place you’d go to where

there’s no coming back.

Photo from TRIPZILLA

Whether it is the eerie vibe of the trees lined along the road or

the white lady that hitches a ride with unsuspecting drivers,

Balete Drive is sure on our number one spot. May it be a young

lady in an unfortunate hit-and-run accident or a raped victim

killed in the area to a woman who died during the Spanish era,

drivers know better than to pass by this road alone during the

wee hours of the night.

TEACHER’S CAMP, BAGUIO CITY

Whether these places actually hold factual information or a mere

figment of someone’s imagination, only those brave enough to

test them out could tell. Are you ready for an out-of-this-world

adventure this Halloween?

LAPERAL WHITE HOUSE, BAGUIO CITY

Photo from INSIGHTS

Baguio City’s climate isn’t the only thing to give you the chills.

The Teacher’s Camp is a spooktacular destination for your

next visit! The camp is a famous venue for group seminars,

conferences, training, and events. It also houses spirits that are

rumored to walk in its corridors at night, may they be headless or

wailing, and some odd shadows on its grounds.

Continuing our list is another ghost-infested place in Baguio—the

Laperal White House. It was built in the early 1930’s by Roberto

Laperal as a vacation house for his family. Come WWII, this allwhite

house has been a witness to the gruesome garrison killings

by Japanese soldiers. If this place sounds familiar to you, a horror

movie inspired by its hauntings was produced in 2010 under

Regal Entertainment.

CLARK AIR BASE HOSPITAL, PAMPANGA

Photo from TRIP 101

MANILA FILM CENTER

VP/TRAVEL

Its reputation has indeed preceded Siquijor. An island-province popularly

known for its sorcery, mysticism, and witchcraft, this is any thrill seekers’

destination for the supernatural. As much as ghosts frighten us, there’s no

telling what a real life witch could do. I’d be careful if I were you!

Photo from WHEN IN MANILA

This abandoned hospital has not only gained recognition in our

country but was also called as “one of the most haunted places

in the world” by Ghost Hunters International. Having hosted

wounded WWII American soldiers, it’s no wonder how restless

spirits seem to haunt the place. Mysterious apparitions and

muffled voices have been seen and heard by both locals and

visitors. It was even said that the place was fenced out from the

public due to violent spirits around the property.

MOUNT SAN CRISTOBAL, QUEZON

PROVINCE

Photo from HAUNTED ATTRACTION ONLINE

Controversy has always been synonymous with the Marcoses.

Dubbed as the country’s largest tomb, Manila Film Center caused

the death of countless workmen. When its upper floor collapsed,

rather than halting construction, it was said Imelda Marcos

ordered to cover the bodies of those who died and injured with

wet cement. Traditionally, these sacrifices would strengthen and

reinforce the structure of the building.

MANILA CITY HALL, METRO MANILA

Photo from LUCIS PHILIPPINES

Also known as the “Devil’s Mountain”, legend has it that this

place takes one hiker a year. Locals say it harbors the negative

energies of Mt. Banahaw and houses several of the country’s

mythical creatures. Be sure to flip your clothes inside out in case

the tikbalang plays tricks on you.

SIQUIJOR ISLAND

Photo from WELL KNOWN PLACES

Did you know Manila City Hall is shaped like a coffin when seen

from above? Apart from its odd shape, workers have reported

that when the clock strikes at 6 PM the spirits start to roam the

area.

LA VITA RISTORANTE ITALIANO

ESTABLISHES AUTHENTIC ITALIAN

EXPERIENCE

VP/FOODIE

Pappardelle Tartufate

Burrata is a creamy cheese from Italy and La

Vita added fresh tomato and arugula on the

pizza Pizza Burrata which may be one of the

most unique dishes from the lot.

Authentic and modern, those are two words that come to mind when visiting the La Vita

Ristorante Italiano at The Podium Mall in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City. Usually if Italian food

gets mixed with other flavors from different countries, it loses its authenticity. Fused with

genuine ingredients, it also remained its legitimate Italian identity.

THE LA VITA EXPERIENCE

La Vita served dishes that definitely remained

exceptionally high quality. Chef Maurizio

Gibillini guarantees the freshness of fish,

clams, tomatoes, cheese and pasta tossed in

the mix of ingredients. Upon the whole team’s

visit, waiters also gave us with a warm welcome

and assisted us with our every need.

There are a lot of Italian restaurants that

claimed to be unique but La Vita remains in

a class of itself. They have a seating capacity

ideal perfect for food-lovers, families and

friends. You also don’t have to spend a fortune

to eat at La Vita with an average of Php700 per

head.

NOW, LET’S DETERMINE WHICH ONE OF

THEIR DISHES STOOD OUT:

soups, salads and appetizers

Soup became the best start to eat dinner.

The Brodetto di Mare, then, had the perfect

consistency to run smooth and velvety through

the mouth. It also had an interesting touch as

the spicy clear soup retained a velvety texture

which contrasts the clam and mussels.

Insalata Sicilliana

Aside from the tomatoes and cheese, La Vita

also played around with seafood through

Carpaccio di Polipo. This, on the other hand,

has tender octopus with extra virgin olive oil,

Italian vinegar, garlic, chili and parsley. The

freshness definitely added to the delectable

taste.

Pizza Burrata

The whole dining experience went complete

with dessert! We had a Pannacotta, a softly set

sweet and creamy dessert.

Panna Cotta

We also had Tiramisu, Italian layered coffee

dessert with powdered chocolate and

mascarpone cheese.

Tiramisu

Brodetto di Mare

One of the most interesting twist to a salad

may be having it with orange slices in orange

vinaigrette through Insalata Siciliana. It also

had assorted greens, onion rings and naked

olives.

Carpaccio de Polipo

HOMEMADE PASTAS, PIZZAS AND DESSERTS

Pappardelle Tartufate is probably (personally)

my favorite one. The homemade pasta also

has porcini cream and truffle oil which I didn’t

expect to like. The truffle oil, then, definitely

changed the dimension of the experience

tasting the pasta.

FOUR STARS AND A

CONSTELLATION:

ALLEN, LEXI, KIM, AND SHAYNE

When the universe decided to explode and form the cosmos that we now know of, it made the most beautiful accident.

But unlike accidents, this felt like it was meant to be. From the colossal galaxies to the most minute of atoms, the results

oddly look too detailed to be that of mere chance.

Planets spin on their own axis, around a star that would eventually burn them. But somehow they still function. Gravity

pulls these heavenly bodies together but just enough to keep them at a distance.

And there are plenty of stars in this universe. Each glowing from their own light, some brighter than others, but still

shining nevertheless. These individual stars, when looked at with other stars, form majestic images as they flicker in the

night sky. These images are called constellations and they show us how man — despite being specks of dust in the cosmos

— have imagination as wild as the universe itself.

STORIES AMONG THE STARS

Growing among these celestial beings

in the industry, Village Pipol Magazine‘s

star strives to shimmer. To stand out but

to also blend in had always been the

challenge. Knowing how people tend

to relate to something they can see or

imagine, we managed to add visual cues

in their story-telling.

Much like how each constellation had

been named after an animal, mythological

person or creature, an inanimate object,

and even the 12 zodiacs, we’ve tried to

ground these celebrities — these stars —

so people can find a piece of themselves

in their idols and relate to them more.

For the past years, Village Pipol has

featured a stellar line up of cover artists,

each with their own unique stories. For

our 12th anniversary issue, we want to

pay homage to the storytelling we’re

slowly becoming known for. As greatness

had been passed from one generation

to another through stories shared by

our ancestors, we want to create quality

stories people can share for years to

come.

What better way to create a story and

kick-start another Big Bang event than

showcasing four new stars who’ve been

catapulted to the stratosphere by the

recently concluded 7th season of GMA-7‘s

StarStruck?

Can Allen Ansay, Lexi Gonzales, Kim de

Leon, and Shayne Sava’s stories surpass

the test of time? Will they continue

shining amongst the constellation of

stars?

Kim (Ziggy Savella); Shayne

(iamwearingpaul); Lexi (Forever21); Allen

(Zara and Regi Cruz)

10 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol

ALLEN ANSAY: THE GENTLE

GIANT

StarStruck 7’s First Prince is the

youngest of the batch (he’s only

turning seventeen) but Allen

Ansay‘s stature makes him a literal

pillar for his fellow finalists — and

that’s saying something. His lively

personality and innocent disposition

make him a stand-out.

Moreover, he knows how to take

things seriously when he has to, but

also knows how to chill and rouse

the room with his youthful antics.

Seemingly the dark horse of the

competition, Allen slowly rose his

way up with determination and

perseverance. You would think he’d

been acting all his life but it really

wasn’t the case.

“Dati pa, pangarap ko na talaga

maging artista. ‘Di ko lang alam

paano gawin o simulan. Kaya ‘nung

kinausap ako ni mama at tatay,

sinabi nila na kung gusto ko raw

talaga mag artista, dapat luluwas

ako pa-Manila,” he said while

sharing some laughs with his fellow

Final Four batch mates.

TRAVEL• LIFESTYLE• ENTERTAINMENT

www.villagepipol.com | 11

LEXI GONZALES: THE DARLING

DIVA

Outspoken and straight forward, the

First Princess shows us she’s ready

to tackle characters that need subtle

emotional control. Her expressive

eyes make her a candidate for either

the next kontrabida breakthrough

performance, or the palaban

protagonist who can do anything if

she wants to. Confident in her words

with eloquence clearly showing, she

can definitely go far.

With her previous experience in

acting for television, Lexi Gonzales

has become both an insightful ate

and formidable adversary for her

batch mates. But with the things

going for her, she never realized

she’d actually be where she is now.

“Growing up, I never expected all of

this to

ever happen. Oo, it had been a

dream, but isa siyang dream na

‘di mo akalaing magiging totoo.

Mahirap siyang abutin, but here we

are now,” a smile escaped Lexi’s

mouth, showing that she knows

what she’s in for.

KIM DE LEON: THE COMMITTED

CHARMER

Despite his quiet demeanor, Kim de

Leon has been one of the season’s

top performers week after week. This

consistency may have been his ace

in getting the coveted Ultimate Male

Survivor title.

It appears like he doesn’t speak much,

but when he does, the attention is all his.

His boy-next-door charm with a hint of

mischief in his eyes makes him a versatile

actor in the near future.

“Ika nga ni Dingdong, believe in the power

of your dreams,” he states when asked

about how he survived the weekly tests

StarStruck prepared for them.

Having experienced hardships growing

up, Kim’s resiliency to different tasks

proved to be most effective. Although, he

also believes that prayer without action

won’t get him places.

“Determination at pag pupursige. Yun

ang kailangan para makamit ang mga

aspirations sa buhay. Have faith in your

fate and everything will follow,” he

added, showing off those dimples of

his.

14 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol

SHAYNE SAVA: THE PETITE

POWERHOUSE

Shayne Sava is StarStruck 7’s Ultimate

Female Survivor and is rightfully so. With

her heart-shaped face, doe eyes, morena

skin, and an unwavering amount of faith,

Shayne’s combo of feisty cuteness stuck

with people’s minds throughout the

season. Her desire to give more right off

the bat has certainly paid off in the end.

“Prayers. Prayers talaga at guidance

ni Lord. He has been my strength and

grateful ako for everything,” she exclaims

while thinking about her source of

strength throughout the show.

“We’re all destined naman to be here.

Ginawa na lang din namin ‘yung part

namin as finalists to show what we got

sa judges at sa audience. Kaya forever

blessed kaming lahat,” she continued.

Now that she’s living the dream, she’d

want to part with some advice for fellow

dreamers like her, “As long as gusto niyo

ang ginagawa niyo, keep on believing and

find ways para makamit lahat.”

THE BEGINNING OF A GREAT

STORY

There are no accidents when it comes to

achieving your dreams — and wishing on

a shooting star is just wishing unless you

work on what you believe in. Village Pipol

Magazine will grow with Allen, Lexi, Kim,

and Shayne in the sky so vast and full of

expectations. But we’ve gone through

enough to know we can survive anything.

We still have a lot to prove before we can

flip any page in this industry’s book of

growing stories. Our journey has only just

begun, but our passion is burning whitehot

and our drive is pushing us light years

ahead. Someday and eventually, we will

gravitate toward our own destinies and

erupt like supernovas.

But until then, there are plenty of stars in

show business. Each glowing from their

own light, some brighter than others, but

still shining nevertheless. With several

new stars born every now and then, you

wonder if the people’s attention is wide

enough to hold more. And, then again,

our showbiz industry is an ever-growing

universe..

Jillian Ward

Royalty Elevates

We all know princesses, of course we do. They wear beautiful dresses with shiny headbands, glass shoes, and long white gloves.

Princesses overcome adversity with wicked stepmothers, stepsisters, and other villains. They get treated unequally, meet their princes

and they live happily ever after. However, our royal highness Jillian Ward isn’t like that. She elevates beyond belief and proves that she

is here to stay.

JILLIAN WARD REINFORCES

ARCHETYPAL NATURE OF A FAIRY

TALE

Jillian Ward gets out of her comfort zone,

venturing further to throw away her fears of it.

That is a feat we hope to accomplish ourselves

— reinforcing the archetypal nature of a fairy

tale, she makes an homage to the actors and

actresses who helped her through the way.

Remembering the times she had with them,

Jillian sees them as still and tranquil.

“I’ve noticed that all of them are very much calm

and disciplined. For example, they would have

perfected their lines even before they would

get on set. One more thing is that they’re very

supportive, they will literally guide you—which

is so helpful to us [young actors].”

Not only beautiful, she is kind, hardworking,

generous, nurturing, and very optimistic. She

demonstrates a good balance between being

excited about her future and working hard

for her family and herself in the meantime.

Although she has already forgotten some

memories she had when she was younger,

Jillian‘s desire of acting remains at the tallest of

heights.

“I just love doing my job, and I always love the

feeling I get when acting.”

TRAVEL• LIFESTYLE• ENTERTAINMENT

www.villagepipol.com | 21 | 21

BOLD AND BEYOND POSITIVE

She is patient and kind, still doing what she needs to do to make her

dreams come true. With her rivals serving as her wicked villains, she

proves that she remains bold and beyond positive. True to herself and

her heart, she knew where she came from and knows that acting has

become her home. Jillian reminisced about the time she saw herself on

television for the first time which just pushed her to do more.

“I remember seeing myself on TV for the first time. It was a short clip for

Trudis Liit, I remember being so excited to go to work and I think I was

somewhat surprised… Acting is my life.”

CONQUERS ALL ADVERSITIES LIKE A FLOWER THAT

BLOOMS IN WINTER

Much like the princesses we all know and love, Jillian conquers all

adversities like a flower that blooms in winter — rare and beautiful of

all. She speaks up for herself and knows she’s more than what society

expects her to be. She proves to be cunning, strong, and determined. As

a role model, she has a responsibility to those who look up at her.

“Well, I just keep being myself. But I do know that I have to show good

examples to all the people who look up to me. “

22 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol

A ROLE MODEL THROUGH AND

THROUGH

The only way to fail is to give up and Jillian

won’t be doing that anytime soon. With social

media rising as a significant part of our daily

lives, she sets the example of faith. People

spew negativity and hate, but she continues to

hold onto her faith and fight for her dream to

come true.

“Of course, we all let negativity to us

sometimes… For me, I make sure to always try

and help myself rise again, since I know that

nobody else would help me but myself.”

Like most of the princesses, she stands out

from the girls around her. She sees worth and

positivity in everything, even beyond the mental

dangers of social media.

“[Social media] helps build my self-confidence.

It makes me feel like I could be more expressive

and understand the perspective of others.”

A lot of girls would look up at her as she sets

great examples for womanhood, confidence,

and love. With that said, she has a message

to young people who aren’t necessarily

comfortable in their own skin. She tries to

stay comfortable in her own skin, keeping her

mental health at the top of her priorities.

“I’m not comfortable with my own skin

sometimes, but I try not to care. Honestly, you

don’t necessarily need to be so comfortable in

your own skin. For me, mental health is much

more important than physicality.”

Unwilling to compromise her virtues and

principles, she defies norms and she keeps

her duty to remind her fans to be true to

themselves. With the rise of social differences

and injustices, it’s hard to act lovingly towards

another person. However, Jillian Ward stands

up and recognizes self-worth— a message she

wants to send to people around her.

“Most people think that my job is so easy, or my

life is. I just want to remind everyone that I do

have my own struggles, too. My honest advice

is to not follow anyone else’s footsteps and you

should create your own road or story. I’m not

perfect—nobody is, so just be yourself as it

would be the best thing you could do for you.”

Marked by her bravery and courage, Jillian

remains the boldest of all princesses. She

achieves her dreams not in the absence of fear,

but rather motivated in spite of it. She isn’t only

working hard, but she’s doing it well. Her drive

stems from her passion for acting.

No matter what happens, Jillian Ward picks

herself back up and listens to her heart’s

desires.
