Contests
Spookiest thing about Halloween contests is how little time is left to enter
Bill Jones, Editor
As people who work
on deadlines at 22nd Century
Media, we understand
procrastination as well as
anyone. But even we get a
little anxious as we look at
the calendar each year and
see what precious little
time is left for our Halloween
contests.
We just want to make
sure you don’t miss out on
the fun — whether your
poison happens to be carving
pumpkins or dressing
up. So make sure you get a
refresher on the details that
follow before the big day
arrives. We look forward
to seeing your entries.
Details for each contest
are below, but questions
can be directed to Editor
Pumpkin-Carving Contest
Our pumpkin-carving
contest for 2019 has a category
for adults 16 and
older, as well as one for
children 15 and younger.
In both categories, it is all
about creativity and skill.
We will pick just one
winner across each category
from all seven of
our southwest suburban
towns: Orland Park, Tinley
Park, Frankfort, Mokena,
We have just a few rules.
1) You have to be the
person who carved the
pumpkin. You cannot submit
for anyone else, with
the exception of parents
members of the family
(and they can be submitted
together).
3) We understand there
may be a bit in the way of
the pumpkins have to be
relatively family friendly
Centennial Park welcomes 1,200 to support cause
7
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
At last year’s South
Suburban Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer
Walk, the American Cancer
Society brought together
more than 1,000 people
and raised $172,000 to
support research and its
free programs for breast
cancer patients.
This year, it upped the
ante with more than 1,200
participants walking with a
goal to raise $174,000.
Orland Park has hosted
the annual fundraising
walk for the south suburbs
since it began in 2007.
This year, the event took
place on Oct. 13 at Centennial
Park’s parking
lot, which was filled with
sponsor booths, a DJ booth
and dance area, and activities
for children.
“The Village of Orland
Park is fantastic about supporting
us,” said Karen
Bruck, community support
coordinator for the ACS
North Central Region.
“They’re very generous to
us, and I would not move
the event from this location.”
The 5K walk has become
one of the ACS’
most important fundraisers,
next to the Relay for
Life, she added.
While the fundraising
is important, another
core goal of the event
is to build a community
of support and to spread
awareness and education.
Kenyatta Huddleston, a
Bolingbrook resident and
breast cancer survivor,
said that events like this
are quite impactful for
more than just building
awareness in the community
and raising funds to
support programs.
“When I was diagnosed,
we did the Why Me walk,”
she said. “It’s no longer
around, but it was very
emotional for me. When
you’re going through that,
sometimes you think,
‘I’m the only one.’ And
when I got there, there
were thousands of people
going through the same
thing, and I knew I wasn’t
alone.”
Now a decade cancerfree,
Huddleston regularly
participates in walks to
support organizations like
the ACS and other cancer
patients.
“I hope I make a difference
to someone else,” she
said.
Long-time ACS volunteer
Peter Monreal, of
Hickory Hills, said that he
became involved because
of the community built
around the cause, despite
his lack of personal connection
with breast cancer.
“Research is important,
but cancer survivors
and their families have so
much more to worry about,
too, in this journey they’re
on,” he said. “We see a
lot of people come right
when they’re diagnosed,
and it’s the beacon of
hope they need. ... It gives
them hope to see someone
here celebrating 20 years
cancer-free. ... Yes, raising
money is important,
but also bringing the community
together, making
them aware, and building
a community of support so
no one has to face it alone
is also so important.”
One core group within
the South Suburban Making
Strides 5K Walk community
is Turning Pointe
Dance Company, which
has locations in Lockport
and New Lenox, and has
organized a group of dancers
to perform at the event
and their families to participate
in the walk for the
past 10 years.
Owners Gina Miranda
and Deartra Cappos said
that many of their students
and their families
have been impacted in
some way by cancer, so
Participants (left to right) Deloris Coleman, Terri Rogers-Mullin, Brenda Atkins-
McGaha, Suzanne Guice and Estelle Remmer pose for a photo Oct. 13 at the South
Suburban Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk held at Centennial Park.
Julie McMann/22nd Century Media
they wanted to find a way
to support the cause in the
community.
“Obviously, the kids
love it,” Cappos said, noting
the group of 92 dancers
cheering on the sidelines
as their parents and
other participants crossed
the finish line.
Miranda added, “It’s local
enough to us that it’s a
nice way to give back.”
Lemont’s Julie Mescher
was among the Turning
Pointe Dance parents to
participate in Sunday’s
walk. Mescher has participated
for several years
with the group.
“The moms, we walk
because everyone in our
group has someone who’s
been impacted by cancer,”
she said.
Others came to directly
support a family member
diagnosed with cancer.
Asmaa Qabalawi, of Tinley
Park, said she does not
participate in any other
run/walks but is compelled
by her support for her aunt.
So, your entries need to be
good.
We have just a few rules.
1) You have to be the person
in the costume. You cannot submit
for anyone else, with the
exception of parents who submit
for their children.
2) Each person can only
submit one costume for an entry
(basically, you cannot send
yourself in multiple costumes
— pick one), though families
can send one entry per person
from different members of the
family (and they can be submitted
together). A group also may
enter one group costume, eligible
for one prize, as a group.
3) We understand there may
be a bit in the way of scary imagery
(such is the nature of the
holiday), but the costumes have
to be relatively family friendly
Trustee Debbie Engler
was absent.
The Village Board first
considered the recreational
use cannabis issue at a
work session on Sept. 9, at
which Matt Darin, of the
Greenhouse Group, presented
information related
to the possible recreational
sales and the State law itself.
The Village Board approved
a special use ordinance
for Greenhouse
Group to operate a medical
marijuana dispensary in
April 2015. That ordinance
contained a provision that
prohibited the sale of recreational
cannabis.
Village staff presented a
legal summary at the Sept.
9 work session, as well as
police-related information
and opinions on legalization
in other states.
Village Administrator
John Tomasoski said that
at the end of that work
session the board directed
staff to prepare an ordinance
prohibiting recreational
cannabis sales in
the Village.
Tomasoski said the
main comments that were
received during the discussion
were that potential
revenue from cannabis
sales was not “the driving
force” for the trustees,
the “overall health
and welfare” of Mokena
residents was the primary
concern, there were
“known and unknown
public safety concerns”
regarding recreational
cannabis, and that the
Village Board members
remained committed to
allowing medicinal marijuana
sales.
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Family keeps Halloween
traditions going
For the last 25 years,
New Lenox resident Nick
Gryga has been decking
out whatever home he
lives in for Halloween.
When he and his wife,
Amy, got married, he
decorated their condo
balcony, and the tradition
has moved on to each
house to which they have
moved. The Gryga family
— which includes Hailey,
Isabelle and Jake — has
been in New Lenox for 18
years, though they spent
two years in California
before moving to their current
home in New Lenox
six years ago.
Each year, the decorations
get bigger and better.
“He just goes out our
bathroom window and
walks on the house, and
I’m like, ‘What are you
doing? You need to stop,’”
Amy said with a laugh.
“He just keeps buying
more. He is adding more
this year and more spiderwebs.”
The decorations are up
by Oct. 1 and down the day
after Halloween. But the
Halloween spirit lasts an
extra day, as that is when
Nick heads to the stores to
find the discounted decorations
for the following
year.
The Halloween spirit
was passed down to the
children, too.
“My kids are totally into
it,” Amy said. “Hailey,
my oldest, she is always
dressed up. She’s the most
artistic out of the family,
but the whole family is
into it. We always dress
up for Halloween, even if
we don’t have a party.”
And it is not going to
stop any time soon.
Amy said with a laugh
it is probably just going to
get bigger.
FROM THE HOMER HORIZON
Homer native becomes
vocalist for new band
Kyle Dee started his
first band, The Frantic, as
a freshman at Lockport
Township High School,
along with his best friends
from his hometown of
Homer Glen.
Three years later, at the
age of 16, Dee and his
bandmates were signed
and performing at the Vans
Warped Tour.
Now, as an adult and
seasoned vocalist, Dee has
joined his favorite band,
Makeout, amid a lineup
change that will see the
band reforming its sound
and image.
Previously a member
of The Frantic for 10
years, Dee helped form
the band The Fall Four
in 2014, which was featured
on MTV’s Artists to
Watch. His newest venture
pays homage to the
sound of Dee’s favorite
group as a young musician,
Blink-182, and will
showcase his vocal abilities
with a classic poppunk
vibe.
Originally an East
Coast-based group, Makeout
now sports two members
from the Chicago
area, Dee and bassist AJ
Khah.
“I had been a fan of the
band ever since the first
time I saw them play last
January,” Dee said. “It’s
been a really great experience
to step into this band
as one of the two new
members.”
Makeout is in the studio
and also rehearsing for two
upcoming concert dates in
December. They will play
their first show at Reggies
Chicago and will perform
another two days later in
Rhode Island.
From there, the band
will go on tour across the
country.
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Haunted house fundraiser
returns
For the Malecki family,
Halloween is more than
just a night of frights; it’s
an opportunity to honor a
loved one and show support
for a cause close to
their hearts.
Each October, Josephine
Malecki and her son
Ted Malecki III celebrate
the holiday by decorating
their home at 22191
Chamomile Drive with
life-size ghosts, zombies
and monsters, and creating
a haunted house filled
with spooky animatronic
characters.
The haunted house is
to be open to the public
from 3-8 p.m. on Halloween,
and for the second
year, the event will serve
as a fundraiser for the Les
Turner ALS Foundation in
honor of Josephine Malecki’s
late husband, Ted
Malecki II, who lost his
life to the disease nearly
three years ago.
Last year’s fundraiser
raised just under $300 for
the organization, Josephine
Malecki said.
“That included nickels,
pennies and dimes that
kids were putting in the
jar, which I thought was
pretty great,” she said.
The Maleckis regularly
add new decorations to
their collection, and this
Halloween is no exception,
with skeletons popping
up around the street
name signs adjacent to
their property and an animatronic
headless horseman
helping to guard the
front lawn.
“The kids loved it,”
Josephine Malecki said.
“They thought it was a
great idea. We’re getting
a lot of comments from
the kids. They say, ‘Oh,
you didn’t have that one
last year” or “This is a
new one.’ So, it’s been fun
just putting this stuff up
there.”
From the Editor
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
Joe La Margo recently
got a job as a City
manager in Portage,
Michigan — for those
of you concerned about
whether or not the former
Orland Park Village
manager would land on his
feet — but that’s not the
story here.
The story is about the
process by which he got
the job, and how I’d love
to see it applied here in
the southwest suburbs —
regardless of the results of
said process.
As I was keeping up on
La Margo’s status through
MLive.com I learned some
interesting things about
laws in that area.
In particular, per the
State’s Open Meetings
Act Handbook, “Michigan’s
Open Meetings Act
specifies that the review
and consideration of the
contents of an application
for employment or
appointment to a public
office can be confidential
if the candidate requests it.
However, all interviews by
a public body for employment
or appointment to a
public office shall be held
in an open meeting pursuant
to this act.”
The emphasis on “if the
candidate requests it” is in
the handbook. In this case,
the City Council continued
some discussion and review
of materials in closed
session, and candidates
were kept confidential in
open meetings by being
discussed as letters,
rather than by names, after
candidates were promised
anonymity.
But, in theory, the law
Making a case for Michigan
in Michigan defaults to
a candidate’s application
being public, and puts the
onus on the candidate to
say they do not want it that
way, which could raise the
eyebrows of an engaged
community that prioritizes
transparency.
The bigger thing to
come of that text is the
insistence that “interviews
by a public body for employment
or appointment
to a public office shall be
held in an open meeting
pursuant to this act.” So,
after the Portage City
Council narrowed down 10
candidates to two finalists,
per MLive, those two candidates
were interviewed,
in public, at a special
meeting, during which the
public was allowed time to
make comment related to
the interviews.
Can you imagine?
Following Orland Park’s
hiring of a new Village
manager, and in the midst
of a hiring process for
superintendent in Orland
School District 135?
I ask this not to question
the Village Board’s
recent decision nor D135’s
process, both of which are
commonplace in Illinois,
where “employment” is a
blanket reason to discuss
the matter in closed session
(though, the votes are
public). Ideally, the Village
Board did its due diligence
in reviewing candidates
and made a decision in
the best interest of its
residents. And D135 is
going above and beyond in
soliciting community input
en route to hiring a new
superintendent.
But the level of transparency
in public, participatory
interviews of candidates
makes a journalist salivate.
And while representative
democracy concedes that
we, the public, choose
people to make some of
our decisions, I think most
people can see the benefit
in a transparent interview
process — especially for
a role that carries so much
weight in day-to-day operations,
as high of a salary
as it does, and the limelight
when a scandal ensues.
That said, it’s not foolproof.
You can argue with
the results of that process.
In fact, a couple of trustees
in Portage did just that,
suggesting they could have
benefitted from a continued
search for stronger
candidates.
Maybe some of those
candidates were scared
away by the threat such
public scrutiny. And I’m
sure some public bodies
around these parts would
argue such laws would
somehow throw a wrench
in the productivity of the
process. Some may try to
find ways around them —
I wouldn’t be surprised to
learn some community,
somewhere in Michigan,
encourages all candidates
on the down-low to ask for
confidentiality.
Maybe scaring off leaders
who can’t stand having
their feet held to the fire
would be a good thing.
Maybe it would hamper
the process.
I just know I’d love to
have a front-row seat for
the interview with the next
guy who is going to face a
lawsuit, go on leave, have
a mayor investigated, be
undone by questionable
content found on a laptop
or reportedly find himself
involved in a hit-and-run
incident with a pedestrian
(that one’s from my old
coverage area of Oak
Lawn). I have a feeling
I’m not alone.

Ballet 5:8 premieres ‘Butterfly’ during in-studio performances
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
7
Ballet 5:8 only moved
into its new Orland Park
facility — 11545 183rd
Place, Suite 101 — earlier
this year, but the school
and ballet company have
already done much in an
effort to enrich the lives of
the community by fostering
a love of dance.
On Oct. 12 and 13, Ballet
5:8 invited fans and supporters
to stop by for its
first Orland Park in-studio,
ticketed performances —
four were held throughout
the weekend — featuring
the Chicago-area premiere
of “Butterfly,” a new work
by the company’s artistic
director, Julianna Rubio
Slager. The choreography
tells a story of the power of
hope, as it was inspired by
the Jewish residents of the
World War II Terezin ghetto
who created works of art
despite the brutality of their
oppressors.
“This piece is really special,
because it tells a real
story,” Slager said. “I think
it features something that
we need to remember. The
people in Terezin in World
War II are some of the
bravest and most remarkable
people that I’ve ever
had the pleasure of studying.
So, I’m really excited
to share a story that is so
transcendent, that shares
the hope that even in the
worst possible moment
there is still joy and community.”
Slager said she hoped
audience members were
touched by the story of the
people of Terezin — some
of their art was featured in
the performance — as their
perseverance has provided
her with endless inspiration.
Ballet 5:8’s in-studio performance. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
“I really hope that it’s
something that will encourage
the audience and uplift
their spirits when they’re
starting to feel like life is
overwhelming,” Slager
said. “I’ve drawn a lot of
courage and inspiration
from these people and how
they approached life in Terezin
during an event as horrific
as the Holocaust.”
In approaching the choreography,
Slager drew
from her primary dance
style of ballet to “create
movement that speaks for
itself.”
“Even if you’ve never
seen a ballet, the movement
is going to speak volumes,”
Slager said. “You’re going
to be able to understand the
emotion and the feeling,
because it’s very visceral,
and the movement evokes
the emotion of the piece.
Therefore, it gives the audience
a sense of place, a
sense of time and a sense of
the mental state.”
The cast of “Butterfly”
features talented dancers
from all over the country,
including Ballet 5:8 lead
artists Lorianne Barclay
and Brette Benedict.
“They play two teachers
who worked hard to
maintain hope and joy in
the children, because they
knew that the hope of their
survival rested on these
children,” Slager said. “It’s
an incredible thing to see
[Barclay and Benedict]
working through the ballet
and literally inspiring
the younger cast members,
even as their characters
are interacting through the
piece.”
Benedict, a Mokena
resident, connected with
her character Friedl as a
teacher, because she loves
mentoring the students she
instructs at Ballet 5:8’s
School of the Arts.
“Friedl used some of
the weighted allotment to
pack art supplies and pack
poetry, things that brought
them hope during the Holocaust,”
Benedict said. “I
obviously don’t know what
that would feel like, but the
heart of her purpose was to
allow them to break out in
their creativity. It’s absolutely
beautiful, and its an
extremely hopeful, joyful
piece. It’s such a beautiful
fluid piece of movement,
because every step [Slager]
created was to actually
have our movement paint
in front of the audience.”
The in-studio shows
also featured TalkBack
panel discussions during
which audience members
were invited to ask Slager
and the dancers questions
about “Butterfly” as well
as the opening act, Slager’s
“Brothers & Sisters.”
Barclay said she enjoyed
dancing in both ballets, and
she detailed how “Brothers
& Sisters” showcases contrasting
characters through
technical and not-so-technical
moves.
“It’s very light-hearted,
Ballet 5:8 solo artist Emily Ratkos dances in “Brothers
& Sisters” during the company’s inaugural in-studio
performances in Orland Park.
Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Rubio Slager
welcomes everyone to the inaugural in-studio
performances in Orland Park.
fun, playful, and it shows
the relationship of boys
and girls, brothers and sisters,
on that innocent level
in contrast to some of the
polarized dynamics we see
as adults where we may see
rivalry between the sexes,”
Barclay said. “I really enjoy
dancing it. It has a lot of
technical ballet feats in it,
as well as things like turning
around, sliding on the
floor and kicking your feet.
Ballet 5:8 fans can look
forward to more performances
in a variety of locations
soon. The company’s
School of the Arts is to begin
enrollment for its winter
session — which starts
in January — soon.
When There is Order in the House,
There is Peace in the Home
This is especially true for seniors who are wanting or needing to leave
their family home. Seniors delay this process for four reasons.
1 Seniors are overwhelmed with the amount of
“stuff” in their homes and the thought of sorting
through it, selling it, giving it away, or throwing
it away.
2 Their children are busy or don’t live close by, and
the thought of going through their possessions
by themselves delays the process of downsizing
to a more affordable and easy to manage living
situation, sometimes by years.
3 Seniors don’t have the physical or
emotional strength and stamina to sort,
organize, pack, sell, or toss their most
prized treasured possessions.
4 Seniors have memories around
everything in their home and they fear
that when they “lose” the item, they will
lose the memory. And today the loss of
their “memory” is what seniors fear most.
Staging to sell does not mean you have to
go to a furniture store and spend thousands
of dollars on furniture and home decorations
to make your home look like brand new.
It simply means to work with your own
it to prepare for the big opening
day! It also means that you are ready to place
the “For Sale” sign in your front yard.
Little Joe’s pizza stays ‘Famous’ for six decades
Sean Hastings
Contributing Editor
For 61 years, Little
Chicago area.
Little Joe’s first opened
its doors in 1958 on 63rd
same day it opened its
doors, former owner Pat
Albergo’s daughter, Sue,
Sue and her husband Abe
business.
six years ago, they opened
the Frankfort location.
“When we sold [the
kept asking what happened
said we should keep it going,”
Sue said. “My godfather’s
mine. We had to buy my
dad out.”
Not knowing before it
happened that the 63rd
Street location would be
sold, Sue and Abe bought
a house near the original
location So, for roughly
10 years, Abe drove from
their home near Chicago
Midway International
Airport to the Tinley Park
location.
Sue said they were
originally eyeing the New
Lenox spot to be the first
in the suburbs, but the
former owners, Sherwood
Inn, did not want to sell at
the time. So, Tinley became
the first spot on the
tour for Little Joe’s.
“Abe kept coming over
and talking to [Sherwood],”
Sue said. “Right
after we bought Tinley,
they called my husband
and said, ‘We’ll sell.’ Abe
said, ‘No, we just bought
this restaurant.”
Today, managing three
restaurants, Sue admitted
it is not easy. She and Abe
try to never be at the same
location at the same time,
splitting up to be where
they are needed on any
given day.
Though the recipes
have stayed the same, the
biggest changes Sue and
Abe have implemented
are healthier options and
more gluten-free choices.
“We found out that I was
gluten intolerant, so that
was important to me that
people, if they are gluten
intolerant, they can come
here or any of the restaurants
and know that we
care about people having
other choices,” Sue said.
“I remember 10 years ago,
when I went gluten-free,
that I’d go into places and
they’d look at you like
you have 10 heads. I want
to do even better and give
choices.”
The menu at Little Joe’s
includes, of course, the
famous pizza (thin crust,
deep dish or stuffed),
the Alia Don Allesandro
($15.95 for a pasta with
broccoli, chicken breast,
sun-dried tomatoes, garlic
and olive oil) and
the homemade lasagna
($13.95).
The sauces at Little
Joe’s are homemade, as is
the dough.
Sue also recommends
the poor boy sandwich
($9.95 for a mini, $18.75
for a large).
Sue said she is happy
that customers have been
sticking around for as
long as they have. And
one of those former 63rd
Street customers even
works at the New Lenox
location today. Karen
Outstanding new home values in Peotone can be yours At Westgate Manor
Distinctive Home Builders is building new homes from the low $200s
When it comes to a preferred location,
Peotone is a steadily growing
suburb with a strong infrastructure
and an irresistible small-town charm
with a bright future—which is why Distinctive
Home Builders chose the Will
County village for its newest community
of 38 single-family homes: Westgate
Manor.
“Peotone is a family-friendly village
just south of Chicago and is one
of the best kept secrets among new
home seekers,” said Bryan Nooner,
President of Distinctive Home Builders.
“We expect to attract home shoppers
from northwest Indiana and the
south suburban Chicago marketplace.
We will likely also see buyers from the
Kankakee area because the Peotone
school district is so desirable.”
Several factors attracted Distinctive
Home Builders to this hometown atmosphere
community, not the least of
which was its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 and easy access to I-80. Commuters
will enjoy several nearby train stations
and a mere 35-minute drive to
Chicago.
“It’s a vibrant, growing community

centers in the west and southwest suburbs
with impressive commercial and
industrial growth that has followed the
residential boom here,” said Nooner.

combined with lower construction
costs add up to savings when compared
to a similarly-equipped home in
the area,” added Nooner.
driveways. Depending on the
home selected, other standard amenities
can include a living room, den,
dinette, a tray or vaulted ceiling in
the master bedroom, and dual-zoned
heating and air conditioning.

wide variety of styles and selections—

designs—each available in three to
Manor, including two-story and ranch
homes. Square footages span 1,600 to
2,500 for ranches and 1,800 to 3,000
for two-story homes.
“Most home shoppers feel there

you need and what you want in a new
home. With our new premium inclu-
cantly
by including additional features
that our buyers told us were most important
to them,” said Nooner, who
added that “now is the best time to buy,
because you can still take advantage of
preconstruction prices that range from
the low $200s which makes this a ter-

Other premium standard features
included at Westgate Manor are brick

basements in most models, ceramic

baths and foyer; and custom maple
cabinets. Distinctive kitchen cabinets

ers
with dove tail joints, which is very
rare in the marketplace.
“When you build a new home with
Distinctive, you truly are receiving a
hand crafted home with custom made
cabinets no matter what the price
range,” noted Nooner. This year, Distinctive
Home Builders is celebrating
30 years building thousands of homes
throughout the Will and south Cook
county areas.
Distinctive Home Builders, an in-

with a “Zero Punch list” closing policy.
Prior to closing, each home undergoes
an industry leading 100-point checklist
to insure the home measures up to
our high quality standards.
Aspen III Exterior
Customers stay connected to the
progress of their home from start to
struction
portal. “Our customers simply
download our Distinctive HomeBuilders
app and they are in touch with their
new home 24/7 from anywhere in the
world. The app allows our customers
to see the progress of their home and
access their documents at any time,”
Nooner explained. “Our customers really
appreciate the integration of social
media sites directly in our app allowing
them to easily share photos and updates
of their new home with family and
friends,” he concluded.
As a semi-custom builder, Distinctive
Home Builders can modify any of
its standard designs to cater to a customer’s
tastes, which means that moving
walls, adding extra windows or even
extending the garage are all possible.
Nooner added that “All our homes

built to the new National Energy Code
guidelines. Every home we build has
upgraded wall and ceiling insulation

customers take possession of their new
home, we perform a blower door test to
insure that each home passes a set of
very stringent guidelines which insures
that our homes are tight and energy ef-

means lower gas and electric bills for our
customers each month.”
Peotone was established in 1856 and

downtown area complete with diners,
pizza parlors, cafes and pubs. In season
there is a Farmer’s Market in front
of the American Legion. Also the community
has a popular Fall Fest in front
of the famous Peotone Windmill; once

the map in the late 1800s. A Christmas
in the Village Festival is another annual
community event that concludes with a
Lighted Parade at night. Peotone now
has an estimated population of just over
4,000. Metra rail service is nearby providing
commuters easy access to downtown
Chicago.
Westgate Manor is conveniently located
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School. The

and Information Center is located in
Manhattan three miles south of Laraway
Rd. on Rt. 52. at 16233 Pinto Lane,
Manhattan, IL, 60422. Hours are daily
Matt Mazzei is a junior
on the Sandburg golf team
and the lone Eagles player
to qualify for the state
meet.
How did you get
involved in golf?
When I was young, like
5 or 6, my dad [John] took
me, and I started to play it
often. He was really good
teaching me the basics. We
played at White Mountain.
So, have you loved
golf all these years?
I kind of lost interest
the last couple of years
and then I got it back. I’m
playing a lot of golf now.
I don’t know why I lost
interest, and I’m not sure
why I have such an interest
in it now. I really don’t
know.
Now that you like it
again, what do you
like about golf?
Hitting a really good
shot is great. It’s neat if
you can pull off some crazy
shots.
Is there a TV show
you can binge watch
over and over without
getting sick of it?
I like “Stranger Things,”
of course, but I don’t watch
a lot of TV.
How about a movie
you could watch over
and over?
“Happy Gilmore.” I
watched it back when I
started golfing. It’s nostalgic.
Do you have a
favorite food?
An Italian sandwich
from Potbelly is really
good.
Is there a food out
there that if they gave
you $1 million you still
wouldn’t eat it?
I heard about this thing
called a century egg. They
put an egg in the ground
and ferment it. Then, after
100 years, they dig it up
and eat it. That does not
sound appealing at all.
Is there a person –
living or dead – you
would like to have
dinner with?
Someone like Frank
Sinatra. He’s the first one
to come to mind.
If they made a movie
about your life, who
should play you?
Matt Damon. I like his
works.
What would the title
of the movie be?
“Full Plate.” I have golf,
school, I run a YouTube
channel. I have a lot of
stuff.
Eagles boys, Jeffries claim SWSC titles
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Not a whole lot has
changed since August.
That is the way Sandburg’s
cross country teams
like it.
Sandburg’s boys dominated
the SouthWest Suburban
Conference preseason
meet in August,
while Ella Jeffries was first
individually at Lockport.
The same results occurred
on Saturday, Oct. 19,
as the boys finished with
28 points — placing six in
the Top 10 — and Jeffries
won her second conference
crown of the year.
Ben Giblin (14 minutes,
46 seconds) took third,
and his twin brother, Will,
(14:49.50) took fourth.
Sam Rodriguez took sixth,
Ismail Tineh seventh, Griffin
Lehnhardt eighth and
Ahmad Alhayek was ninth.
Jeffries ran a 17:46.40,
easily outpacing Lockport’s
Caroline Turner (18:16.40).
Sandburg’s Brielle Morris
took ninth.
Both squads are at the
Plainfield South Regional
on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Orland Park’s Tommy
Leonard of Marist won the
East Suburban Catholic
Conference meet at Arlington
Park with a 15:15.10.
Providence survives
Providence defensive
back Kevin Countryman’s
interception of a two-point
conversion attempt helped
the Celtics survive a 31-30
victory over St. Laurence
on Friday, Oct. 18. Quarterback
Kevin Conway returned
from an injury and
threw for 126 yards and
added a 45-yard TD run.
Attack tryouts
The Attack Volleyball
school tryouts on Oct. 27
Sandburg’s Sam Rodriguez, shown running earlier in
the year, helped the Eagles win the SWSC conference
meet. PHOTOS BY JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Ella Jeffries, shown in a meet earlier in the season, won
the SWSC girls race.
and Nov. 3 for players
who are not still competing
with their high
school teams. The tryouts
are from 9 a.m.-11
a.m. at the Megaplex at
15301 S. Bell Road in
Homer Glen. Players
still competing with their
high school teams should
2. Lincoln Way East Special Teams: 2 blocked punts, including 1 for a
TD, and Dominic Dziabon with 2 FGs.
3. Jack Shelton, Sandburg: 2-for-5, 9 yards.
UP NEXT: Sandburg plays at home in its season finale against Bradley-Bourbonnais
at 7 p.m, Friday, Oct 25. Bradley Bourbonnais won its last matchup 42-30.
Looking to avoid its third
consecutive and sixth total loss
on the season, Sandburg made
some early stops on defense
that left even the coach of the
No. 1-ranked Class 8A team in
the state giving the Eagles some
credit.
“Give a lot of credit to Sandburg
early in the game for
stopping us for field goals,”
Lincoln-Way East Coach Rob
Zvonar said.
Unfortunately for the Eagles,
the Griffins’ special teams and
Michigan recruit A.J. Henning
were more than enough to get
the job done.
Two field goals, three
touchdowns by Henning and
a blocked punt return for a
touchdown blew the game wide
open for the Griffins and led to
a 40-0 halftime deficit for the
Eagles.
“They were just outexecuting
us,” Sandburg coach Scott Peters
said. “Every senior starter
on their team has a Division II
[scholarship] offer or better.
They were just winning one-onone
matchups. They weren’t doing
anything special.”
The Griffins came in as overwhelming
favorites. On an undefeated
streak that has seen
them defeat the likes of Stevenson,
Naperville Central, Bolingbrook
and Homewood-Flossmoor,
they took a 45-0 lead into
halftime last week against the
same Lockport Township team
that came back from a 14-point
halftime deficit to defeat Sandburg
three weeks ago.
“I think our schedule’s
worked in our favor,” Zvonar
said. “We played extremely
tough competition early, and
are getting a lot of guys experience
while we have a few guys
injured right now.”
After two opening drives for
the Griffins’ offense ended with
Dominic Dzioban kicking field
goals of 42 and 26 yards, the
Griffins were given the ball at
the Eagles’ 48-yard line after a
short punt.
On the next play, Henning
took a handoff 48 yards for a
score that led to a 13-0 lead.
From there, the rout was on.
A punt block by the Griffins
after the Eagles failed to pick
up a first down gave Lincoln-
Way East the ball inside the red
zone. Henning scored two plays
later on a 7-yard run to open up
a 20-0 lead before the end of the
first quarter.
After the Eagles failed to pick
up a first down, Henning took
the ball at his own 50-yard line
and returned the punt 50 yards
for a TD.
In all, Henning touched the
ball three times in a row and
scored on all three carries. He
finished with six carries for 75
yards and a punt return TD, all
in the first half.
“We haven’t been able to see
him the last two years [because]
he’s been injured,” Peters said.
“They move him around and
John-Michael Scumaci looks for running room against Lincoln-Way
East on Friday, Oct. 18. Mark Karosa/22nd Century Media
use him in so many different
spots. He’s a once-in-a-generation
type of talent. [When] he
shows up, he causes problems.”
Sandburg managed to pick up
a first down, but on the ensuing
punt attempt Jalen Hacha was
able to get a hand on the ball,
which then bounced to linebacker
Jake Kramer for a 23-yard
TD return. A 35-yard TD run
by quarterback Tyler Slager late
in the first half rounded out the
scoring.
A relatively quiet second half
saw the Griffins get inside the
Eagles’ 5-yard line, only to be
stopped.
For Sandburg, it ends one of
the most grueling three-game
stretches in team history, one
which saw them play three
teams with a combined record
of 21-3.
They will attempt to avoid
their first 2-7 campaign since
2003 by trying to pick up a win
next week in the season finale
against Bradley-Bourbonnais.
“They’re going to work hard
next week and give it all on their
last opportunity,” Peters said.
“This will be the last time some
of them will ever put on a helmet
and shoulder pads. You’ve got to
take time and cherish those moments
you have.”
Big times for Eagles tennis and golf teams
3
STEVE MILLAR
Contributing Editor
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
When it comes to the
Sandburg girls athletic
program, this is a nice
spot to be.
First, the girls golf team
just finished a banner year,
as a team heavy on underclassmen
finished seventh
at the Illinois High School
Association Class 2A state
meet on Saturday, Oct. 19,
at the Hickory Point Golf
Course in Decatur.
Second, the girls tennis
team won its fifth straight
sectional and will send
a small army of talented
athletes to the Class 2A
state meet, which is to begin
Thursday, Oct. 24, at
various northwest suburban
high schools.
What a fun time to be an
Eagles fan.
Golf coach Todd Allen
had some fun over
the weekend watching his
team shoot a 647 over two
rounds, 46 shots behind
state champion Stevenson.
“I’m very proud,” Allen
said. “I was looking
at some of our history,
and we had made it
downstate three years in
a row in 2013, 2014 and
2015. Our best finish was
fifth. We shot a 678 that
year. This year we shot
647 and took seventh.
Unbelievable. We played
really well. To shoot that
score down here, I’m really
happy.”
Three-time state qualifier
Athena Kwon shook
off a first-round 80 and
finished with a 75 on the
second day for a 155 to
tie for 18th in the state.
Last year, she was 15th in
the state and was 29th her
freshman season.
This was the first time
she was in Decatur with
her full team,
“I’m proud of each and
every one of the girls
since we made it to state,”
Kwon said. “That was our
first goal. Our second goal
was making the secondday
cut. We hope to be
back next year, and this
was a good experience.”
Junior Joanna James
fired a 158, senior Katie
Fleming added a 160 and
freshman Jillian Cosler
had a 178. Senior Katie
Mikso and junior Sarah
Wardlow also competed
but did not score.
Kwon was determined
to make up for her firstround
performance.
“Oh my gosh, the first
day I was hooking to the
left,” she said. “But after
that round, I practiced two
or three hours, and I think
I got it. That’s why my
score was so much better.
I was 3-putting a lot
on the first day. I missed
some stupid putts. I was
much more stable the second
round.
“It was a motivation for
me,” she added. “I knew
I would have to shoot really
low to get a decent
place. I told myself, ‘You
better do better in the second
round.’ That was my
motivation. I tried not
to let the first round be a
downer.”
The Eagles won their
own Class 2A Sectional
scoring 33 points, edging
out Marist by six points.
The doubles team of Julia
Canellis-Jayme Gross
beat teammates Mia Strola-Konstance
Delis 6-1-7-
5.
Freshman Josie Canellis
finished second at singles,
and junior Viyaleta
Hordzich finished third to
qualify.
“This group of seniors
—Jayme Gross, Julia
Canellis, Konstance
Delis, and Mia Strolia
— are very special,”
Eagles coach Brian Ostrander
said. “To have
these four for four years
makes coaching easier.
These four all have qualified
since their sophomore
years, and Julia
since freshman year. They
are four-time sectional
champions. Now, we add
a freshman Josie Canellis
and junior Viyaleta
Hordzich to the mix.
“Jayme and Julia are the
captains and are hoping to
have a deep run at state.
Their experience over the
years should prove well.”
Julia Canellis has a
unique history.
This is her fourth state
appearance, but she has
shown great versatility
each year.
Sandburg’s girls golf team finished seventh in the state and has plenty of firepower
returning for next year.
She qualified as a freshman
and finished 0-2 in
her state debut.
She was paired with
Gross her sophomore
season, and the two had
a nice run going 2-2 and
making it to the third consolation
round.
Last year, it was back to
singles, and she finished
1-2.
This year, she is reunited
with Gross, and the two
are looking for a deep run
at state.
Mazzei ties for 62nd
In boys golf, Sandburg
junior Mitchell Mazzei
finished tied for 62nd in
Class 3A with a 72-hole
total of 168 at The Den at
Fox Creek Golf Course in
Bloomington.

THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK
Plenty of accolades coming up for Sandburg Hall of Famers
22nd Century Media File
Things to keep
an eye on in the
Sandburg season
finale for football
1. Attempting to avoid
history
The 2-6 Eagles are
looking to avoid
what would be their
first 2-7 season
since 2003. They
could dodge it with
a win against Bradley-Bourbonnais,
which has managed
only one more
W this season.
2. Jack Shelton
The senior quarterback
(ABOVE) had
a tough showing
against Lincoln-
Way East in Week
8, but in his last
high school game
he will no doubt be
looking to make an
impact.
3. The SuperfanZ
No matter the
outcome, the Sandburg
SuperfanZ
always make home
games a fun affair
on Friday nights.
Food for thought for
those who aren’t
very hungry:
Recently, Sandburg announced
its 2019 Athletic
Hall of Fame Class.
Congratulations to
former athletes Geoff
Orr, Anne Mullins, Tim
Regan, Missy Kies, Sara
Olson, Scott McGhee,
Kristin Sutherland, Bob
St. Leger and Brian
Forystek as they will be
honored at 7 p.m. Nov. 8
in the Eagle Gym.
Congratulations to
the 1998 girls volleyball
team, which will also be
honored.
And kudos to former
coaches Al Gillberg and
Gary Bonk, plus supporter
Dr. Lloyd Blakeman, who
will also receive their
adulation.
This is just the third
installment of the Hall of
Fame, and there are so
many athletes and teams
from the 1960s through
now who are banging on
the door to get in.
Heck, recent superstars
Michael Schofield and
Kendall Coyne are not
even in, and who knows
how many years it will
be before it is their turn?
It is a stacked field. The
school will never run out
of qualified candidates.
Anyone who has gone
to an event like this will
get a kick out how the
former athletes look
today. Some look lean
and mean and appear as if
they could compete in a
game right now and tear
the arm off and opponent.
Some suffer that dreaded
disease known as middle
age, and they are not so
lean and mean. They look
like mom or dad. That’s
because most of them are
a mom or a dad.
That brings me to today’s
potential future Hall
of Famers.
I am not sure what
people such as Dylan
Jacobs, Pat Nolan, Patrick
Brucki, Hannah Kilbane,
Anna Loureiro and others
are going to look like in
10 or 20 years. I just can’t
imagine them old. Well,
Nolan admitted to me that
at times he walked around
like an old man after knee
surgery, so that may be a
preview.
But so many of Sandburg’s
recent stars are still
competing in college, and
it is almost unfathomable
to see them balding or
growing a Vorva-like gut.
But it happens. We
cannot stop time from
doing its thing, for better
or worse.
Flip-flopping
If you read Steve
Millar’s account of
Providence vs. DePaul
Prep last week, you saw
something screwy that
has been screwy for a
long time.
DePaul Prep did not run
the ball once. Never even
lined up a running back in
the backfield.
That’s screwy enough,
but that’s not what I’m
talking about.
DePaul quarterbacks
attempted 32 passes and
were sacked twice for a
14-yard loss.
In college and professional
football, those
lost yards do not go to
an individual; they go
against the team’s passing
yardage. So, if Mitch
Trubisky of the Bears
throws for 300 yards and
is sacked for 20 yards, he
still gets the 300 yards
on his stats, but the team
passing total will read
280.
The Illinois High School
Association has long
counted sack yardage as
rushing yardage. Decades
ago, I had arguments with
other writers about it and
thought it was all right.
But as the years have gone
on, I see the wisdom of
the way the NCAA and
NFL does it, and after
the Providence/DePaul
game, I think it should be
changed. I am flipping on
my original stance from
the ’70s and ’80s.
After all, you can’t have
negative rushing yardage
in a game when you actually
didn’t run the ball.
Tattoo, you
Speaking of Brucki, a
few weeks ago, we ran a
shot of Princeton wrestling’s
ticket promo with
Brucki scowling and looking
like he would rough
you up if you did not sign
up right now.
The Tigers promotion
department was at
it again, creating a video
with Brucki and some
of his teammates with a
pirate vibe called “Burn
the Ships” based on conqueror
Cortes.
Basically, Brucki and
the Tigers are coming onto
your land, and they are
burning their own ships,
because they are not going
anywhere until the job is
done.
LISTEN UP
“They’re going to work hard next week and give it all on their last
opportunity. This will be the last time some of them will ever put on a
helmet and shoulder pads. You’ve got to take time and cherish those
moments you have.”
