BAY HARBOUR
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
from the reporter’s desk
IT’S GREAT to see something is finally being done to ease the
impacts of cruise ships in Akaroa (see page 1).
Ninety vessels will enter the harbour this season, and the city
council has new measures in place to minimise congestion from
an influx of tourists and visitors.
Residents have been pushing for action since it first became a
problem eight years ago.
However, it seems the community has been forgotten about
in the city council’s “collaborative” approach to managing
congestion.
City council citizens and community principal adviser
Brent Smith says the city council is working with cruise lines,
transport operators, businesses and other organisations to
improve the experience for residents and visitors.
Interesting move since residents have complained in the past
about businesses being given priority over the community.
