Am I Welcome Here?
The Am I Welcome Here project was created by
OutReach to expand and support existing senior
service agencies in Dane County with LGBTQ inclusive
practices.
Organizations agree to training and education, and
implementation of inclusive practices into their
policies. With an ongoing agreement to sustain the
inclusive practices, the organization will receive an
OutReach Pride Flag decal, letting the community
know their location has committed to be welcoming,
affirming, and supportive of the unique challenged
LGBTQ seniors experience.
For more information, contact OutReach’s LGBT
Senior Advocate at ticiak@lgbtoutreach.org or
18 Fall 2019 - Fall 2020 OutReach Directory
October 2019
Welcome to the 2019-2020 OutReach Directory. Our Directory provides a lot of
information for our community: listings of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender (LGBT) supportive non-profit community groups, advertisements
from hundreds of LGBT supportive businesses, and additional governmental
and national LGBT group listings.
OutReach and our parent organizations The United and Madison Gay &
Lesbian Resource Center have served as Madison and south-central Wisconsin’s
LGBT Community Center since 1973. After working together for decades, the
two groups merged in 1998 and moved to our longtime location at the Gateway
Mall in Madison. In June of 2016 we moved our location to 2701 International
Lane, Ste 101, Madison WI 53704.
OutReach’s mission is “a commitment to equity and quality of life for all
LGBTQ+ people through community building, health and human services, and
economic, social, and racial justice advocacy.” Our vision is “to create a community
where the presence and contributions of LGBT people are celebrated,
where intolerance is challenged and defeated, where justice prevails, and
where civil rights of all people are valued and respected.”
One of the important services we have provided for decades is the Directory.
OutReach Program Services include:
• Resource Identification and Referral — We provide a wide array of LGBT print
material at our office and community event tables, referrals by phone and in
person, cyber-center access, websites, social media, and our Center Connection
E-Newsletter.
• Publications — Our monthly Calendar & Guide and annual Directory as well
as other print material.
• Peer Support — Support by phone or in-person with our front desk
volunteer and paid staff.
• Social and Support Groups — 18 LGBTQ social/support groups currently meet
at OutReach, including OutReach programs and community groups.
• Educational Services — Our panels of volunteer speakers travel throughout
south-central Wisconsin, speaking to schools, businesses, governmental
entities, and civic groups about many aspects of LGBTQ life, rights, and culture.
Our LGBT 101 presentations provide a more formal in-service on LGBT issues for
employee and professional associations. For more info: www.lgbtoutreach.org.
www.lgbtdirectory.org 19
• Pozitively Yours social/support group — a safe and supportive place for everyone
living with HIV and/or AIDS. All are welcome: Men, women, LGBTQ, straight,
everyone living with HIV and/or AIDS. Spouses and partners, whether they are
positive or not are also welcome. The group meets the first and third Tuesdays of
the month.
• LGBTQ 50+ Alliance — A co-operative project with the Madison Senior
Center, this program offers the Gay & Gray discussion group, quarterly social
events, our LGBT Senior Advocate staff position, and more.
• Advocacy — We act as an advocate for many clients that face discrimination.
• Earl Greely Memorial Library — is one of the largest LGBT lending libraries in
the Midwest with more than 4,500 volumes, including fiction and non-fiction.
• In 2019 OutReach hosted the OutReach MAGIC Festival: A PRIDE Celebration
for the first time. The festival was held Sunday August 18th at Warner Park
from 1 to 6pm. The event also marked the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall and
the 30th anniversary of PRIDE in Madison. The event was a success with 5,000
attendees.
We are proud to lead an organization that does so much for so many. Last year
we served over 3,000 individual clients, and provided more than 24,000
client contacts to these individuals. We encourage you to stop by our center
for information, to join a group, or check out a book. Also, please consider
making a generous financial contribution or contributing your time and talents
as a volunteer for OutReach LGBT Community Center.
We hope the OutReach Directory will be a valuable resource for you and your
family in 2019 and 2020. Please support the businesses and
nonprofit organizations that you find in this book and when you use their
services let them know you found them through our publication.
National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Organizations
Center Link
CenterLink is the national association of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community
centers. It was founded in 1994 as a member-based coalition to support the development of
strong, sustainable LGBT community centers.
The organization has played an important role in supporting the growth of LGBT centers across
the country and addressing the challenges they face, by helping them to improve their organizational
and service delivery capacity and increase access to public resources. Based in Fort
Lauderdale, FL, CenterLink works with other national organizations to advance the rights of LGBT
individuals and to provide LGBT community centers with information and analysis of key issues.
Serving over 200 LGBT community centers across the country in 46 states and the District of
Columbia, as well as centers in Canada, Israel, Mexico, China and Peru, CenterLink assists newly
forming community centers and helps strengthen existing LGBT centers, through networking
opportunities for center leaders, peer-based technical assistance and training, and a variety of
capacity building services.
Our efforts are based on the belief that LGBT community centers are primary change agents
in the national movement working toward the liberation and empowerment of LGBT people.
Serving over 600,000 people, they are the heart and soul of the LGBT movement and are vital
to our current well-being and dreams for the future. Whether they provide direct services,
educate the public or organize for social change, community centers work more closely with
their LGBT constituency and engage more community leaders and decision-makers than any
other LGBT network in the country.
The National Lavender Green Caucus (NLGC) is the Green Party’s advocacy group on gay, lesbian,
bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (GLBTIQ) issues. NLGC works for the elimination of
against GLBTIQ communities. NLGC also works for the elimination of racism and sexism and all
their manifestations in GLBTIQ communities and in society as a whole. Our work is centered in
the ten key values and four pillars of the Green Party of the United States. The caucus recognizes
