ACCOMMODATION GUIDE 2019/20

WELCOME TO BED & BIRDING 2019!

This year is our fifth anniversary and we are now a network of over 60 lodges around

the world. For more information please visit our website www.bedandbirding.com

We are delighted to receive this message of support from Dave Gosney.

I first met Pavel when I came on a trip to Bulgaria in winter. It was a particularly

cold week with the fields carpeted in snow so his Birders Lodge at Durankulak

was a wonderfully cosy and much needed haven and his knowledge of local birds

meant that we were able to track the Red-breasted Geese to the only sites where

they were still able to feed.

It made such a perfect place for birders to stay that he decided to build up a global-network

of similar establishments – places where you are in the heart of the

best birdwatching areas and that are familiar with the particular needs of birders.

I’ve been to several of the places in this brochure (on three continents) and

always enjoyed the fact that the birdwatching starts the moment you step outside.

This gives you a lot more flexibility in how you organise your time. It means you

can get up at any time in the morning and get some birding in before breakfast

and that you can carry on birding even when others in your party need to rest in

the heat of the day. Or you can take a breather yourself yet still see birds just by

sitting around outside.

Bed & Birding - Homes Made for Birders ®

Discover a Distinctive World of Birding

Bed & Birding” is a steadily growing global network of accommodation providers

that have been carefully chosen in accordance with our service quality criteria. Our

partners not only provide comfortable and memorable accommodation, but also pay

careful attention to the specific needs of birders, including: bird-friendly surroundings,

site information, expert local guides, logistical support, and log-calling lounges.

For travelling birders, individuals as well as tour companies, the Bed & Birding network

helps you to select locations and make bookings simply. Our partners embrace

a huge diversity of internationally important wildlife areas including Mediterranean

islands, the Danube Delta and other Black Sea wetlands, the east and west Atlantic

coasts, uplands of England, the Baltic Sea and taiga, as well as pristine rainforests in

the Amazon basin and Guinea highlands. Use our online bird checklists to find partners

where you can see your target species. You can even plan your travel to link up several

bases inside a country or across countries in order to produce a fantastic birding itinerary,

confident that you will stay in places that understand your needs and will strive

to meet them.

When we travel to write my Finding Birds books or to film birds for the DVDs,

Liz and I usually take our campervan and therefore rarely use hotels or guest

houses. But some places can’t be reached by campervan so I would always check

to see whether there’s a Bed and Birding establishment in the area I’m aiming for.

It’s always reassuring to know that it will be an eco-friendly, birder-friendly place,

right next to where the birds are.

Dave Gosney, author of the Finding Birds books and DVDs (www.easybirder.co.uk)

Manu Birding Lodge provides a variety of guided tours for birders, wildlife enthusiasts and photographers

and ensures that you truly experience the Peruvian Amazon. More: www.manubirdinglodge.com

For potential partners, Bed & Birding is an enterprise that targets the large market

segment for ecotourism in general, and birdwatchers in particular (over 10 million

worldwide). Moreover, it can generate business during the off-peak periods of the

main tour season. We work with all types of accommodation to help them integrate

the Bed & Birding criteria in their existing business models.

Bed & Birding licenses partners to use its branded identity and materials in order

to market their services to birders. The company provides training and know-how

where necessary, promotes the partnership and maintains a corporate web site that

features all partners, and through which booking enquiries can be made. The application

procedure, and terms and conditions, are available on our web site. Take

a look at our current list of partners presented in this brochure - and perhaps you

would like to feature in the next edition!

villages. Western Province is home to

over 50% of New Guinea’s total bird

fauna and Lake Murray is one of the

The famous Albena Sea Resort, located in Northeastern Bulgaria, celebrates its 50th birthday this year.

Albena is a great place for a family holiday combined with excellent birding. The resort provides comfortable

and memorable accommodation of course, but also pays careful attention to the needs of birders and nature

lovers.

It is just 40 km from Varna airport, and has the Black Sea beach in front, and Baltata forest (a Natura 2000 site)

just behind. It is about 40 minutes drive from other major top birding locations, including the protected steppes

and cliffs of Cape Kaliakra and outstanding coastal wetlands close to the Romanian border.

Albena joined Bed & Birding four years ago with two of its establishments. These accommodations are particularly

well situated for observing the Via Pontica flyway migration of soaring birds (guests have access to

the rooftop platform of Hotel Arabella Beach), as well as for visiting the adjacent Baltata alluvial forest. Albena

Beach Villa is another great accommodation for birders situated in the secluded part of the resort. The villa lies

beneath a relatively high hill and has the Black Sea beach in front from where bird lovers can watch see birds

such as Yelkouan Shearwater, Arctic Skua, Mediterranean Shag and different species of terns and gulls.

Albena Sea Resort pursues a sustainability policy and plan for protecting the environment, in particular for its

neighbouring “Baltata” nature reserve, which gives the resort its distinctive landscape. The reserve supports

rare stands of riparian mixed forests, which are protected under the EU Habitats Directive. These forests are

home for a great variety of woodland birds, including Black Stork, Semi-collared Flycatcher, Hawfinch, Icterine

and Eastern Olivaceous Warbler, several species of woodpeckers and some notable raptors such as Lesser

Spotted Eagle, Goshawk, Levant Sparrowhawk and Scops Owl. In spring, Baltata reserve is alive with the

songs of Golden Oriole and Nightingale.
