Half a dozen thrilling reads for September
‘It was a good day to be free of prison.’ So begins David Baldacci’s One Good Deed
... his latest release which, as always, keeps readers’ adrenalin running high. When
Aloysius Archer gets out of prison, he heads for Poca City, with just the clothes he’s
wearing and an appointment with his parole officer. A chance meeting sees him
offered a job as a debt collector – but all’s not above board, and if Aloysius wants to
avoid heading back behind bars, he’s got his work cut out for him. Macmillan, R299.
• A new home in the suburbs offers a fresh start to a family of four. It’s in a quiet,
leafy road, with good schools, and is close to the sea and a comfortable commute
to London. Perfect. All bar the fact that it appears to be the hunting ground for
a serial killer. Fiona Cummins’ The Neighbour is as thrilling as it gets. Macmillan,
R290 • Blood in the Water by Jack Flynn is set in Boston’s underworld, where the
harbour chief, his 19-year-old daughter and a homeland security agent are caught
up in deadly game of cat and mouse with international terrorists. Macmillan, R299
Tom Kennedy and his young son, Jake,
have just moved to a quiet village,
hoping to heal the hurt after the loss
of their wife and mum. The place they
choose to live, Featherbank, has a dark
past ... 15 years before, a serial killer,
known as The Whisper Man, abducted
and murdered five young boys. The killer
was caught, and this history doesn’t
worry Tom and Jake. Until another boy
goes missing. And Jake says he hears
whispering at his window. Alex North’s
outstanding new psychological thriller
is described as gripping and brilliantly
creepy. Penguin, R290
In a large house in London’s
fashionable Chelsea, a baby is awake
in her cot. Well-fed and cared for,
she’s happily waiting for someone to
pick her up. In the kitchen lie three
decomposing corpses, with a hastily
scrawled note. The three have been
dead for several days. So who’s looking
after the baby? There’s little better than
finding a new Lisa Jewell book on the
shelves ... The Family Upstairs is just
FABULOUS. Penguin, R290
Also look out for ...
Daisy and Simon’s marriage is great,
particularly after the arrival of longedfor
daughter Millie. A happy little family
of three. So what if Simon drinks a bit
too much every now and then ... as
Daisy says, he’s just letting off steam.
Then one night at a party, things spiral
horribly out of control ... Adele Parks’
Lies Lies Lies is all about relationships,
marriage and secrets. A great read.
Roses red, violets blue, here are springtime treats for you
Rosé champagne and cherry blossoms
A champagne inspired by cherry blossom. What could possibly
be more appropriate to celebrate spring? Nicolas Feuillatte
Champagne, the number one-selling champagne in France and
the third biggest in the world, has just unveiled its latest spring
edition of the Réserve Exclusive Brut Rosé. Inspired by the famous
– but fleeting – Sakura (cherry blossom) season in Japan, when
life is renewed and flowers are in bud, the packaging is utterly
glorious … all delicate pink petals against a blue sky. The Brut-style
rosé champagne is bursting with red summer fruits, is a gorgeous
pomegranate pink and is absolutely perfect for spring alfresco
sipping. You’ll find it for around R780 at good bottle stores.
Taste tapas to tantalise taste buds
Pictures of bullfighters, quintessential old Spanish
tile designs and a laid-back vibe ... lunch at La
Parada at Waterfall Corner transported us on a
trip down memory lane to a wonderful holiday
in Barcelona a few years back. It’s the first of the
stores in Gauteng (there are three in the Cape),
and it’s a really hot spot for date night and a top
pick for drinks with friends .... the cocktail list is
extensive! There are main courses and platters
for sharing, but we went straight for the tapas.
And boy, did we try out a range of them! The
fillet was mouth-watering. The beef short ribs
with sticky paprika, orange glaze and orange
segments were sweetly satisfying. And the tuna
tacos with pineapple, rainbow salsa, guacamole,
miso emulsion and jalapeños were tasty. But you
seriously cannot visit this restaurant without trying
the tuna tataki. The seared tuna is served with
sesame seeds, avo mousse, angel hair chilli, soyalemongrass
dressing, shaved carrot and coriander.
Even the diehard steak lovers argued with us over
the last piece. Meltingly delicious! Tapas from R49.
Get ready to feel
like the new you
We’ve just come out of a
dry Joburg winter ... and (as
in every year) our skin took a
battering! So we stopped by the
gorgeous YouBar in Illovo for a QMS
collagen rejuvenation facial to hydrate
our skin and fight ageing. Now our
skin feels like a million dollars! This
facial even highlighted our problem
areas and we received some valuable
advice on our skincare routine. The
facial begins with deep cleansing,
exfoliating and toning before a cold
algae mask is applied to sooth and
remove dead skin cells. Then boom,
a (much-needed) collagen serum
is applied to hydrate skin. We even
received a glorious massage and an
eye treatment. It was a real pamper!
YouBar uses a range of great products,
including Africology and Dermalogica.
To get ready to slip our feet into sexy
sandals this spring, we tried a deluxe
Africology pedicure. It was heavenly
for our feet ... and our neck and
shoulders were also massaged. Trust us
... you want to sip a cup of tea during
your pedi. Forget the run-of-the-mill
offerings ... there’s a host of brews to
try. We thoroughly recommend the
Devil’s Advocate – it’s a full-bodied
ginger and chilli-infused tea that’s sure
to give you a boost. If you’re looking
for gorgeous hair, glowing skin,
polished nails or even lush lashes, this
classy little spot will give you a sweet
escape (while making you feel right at
home), and you’re sure to leave feeling
like the new you! Totally desirable and
really worth a visit. Who doesn’t need a
little TLC? Oh, and it’s really affordable!
Add a touch of dramatic flair to your home
Our homes may be filled with a whole lot of technology nowadays but
there’s still room for a little (a lot of ) Bohemian inspiration. In fact, Melissa
Davidson of The Lighting Warehouse says, ‘Bohemian-inspired interiors
have a tendency to add some genuine humanity to our increasingly
technology-infused lifestyles.’ Apparently Moroccan decor plays a big
part in the mainstream popularity of the Bohemian style, bringing ‘a flair
for the dramatic to any décor composition’, says Melissa. The Lighting
Warehouse’s Tangiers range of metal lamps and pendants scream
classic Moroccan and Bohemian decor styles. The lights have cutout
patterns to allow the light to shine through and add a hint
of magic to any room. According to Melissa, the style can be
meshed with nearly any form of decor. This ball-shaped light is
Lattes, laughs
&After almost 30 years as
one of Parkview’s favourite
gathering spots – and
one of Johannesburg’s
first specialised coffee
shops – The Perfect Cup
is receiving a makeover.
Owner Michelle Dancer
spills the (coffee) beans.
It’s Wednesday morning, and Michelle she started au pairing to fill the
Dancer has already interrupted her
own conversation with a number
of smiles and waves to the people
pushing open the door to The Perfect
Cup – one of whom has even asked to
borrow some money for a haircut.
That’s the kind of place The Perfect
Cup is – the caffeine-fuelled equivalent
of that place where everybody knows
your name. That makes Michelle, as the
owner for the past 10 years, something
of a celebrity.
It’s a status that frequently catches
her by surprise. Growing up, she knew
she’d like to follow in her father’s
footsteps as a business owner, but
wasn’t too sure which direction
her interest in entrepreneurism
would take her. What she did know,
though, was that the marketing and
communications degree she was
studying at the time she had her first
encounter with The Perfect Cup, was
just a stopgap.
That encounter came about when
14 Get It Joburg Northern Suburbs September 2019
lunchesto collect their customised blend of
beans, sourced from Uganda, Ethiopia,
Rwanda and Kenya.
extra hours between lectures. Her
employer, Deidre van Niekerk, had
established The Perfect Cup in 1996,
and by 2007, when the two met, the
little coffee shop had a sizeable and
loyal following. ‘People have always
been drawn to this little gem. The
fact that it’s so hidden away [tucked
into a corner of one of Parkview’s
neighbourhood centres] certainly
adds to the attraction. I also think it’s
the kind of place where people pop
in for a quick chat and a refreshing
cuppa after they’ve stopped at the
pharmacist and the greengrocer.
You all get to know each other after
a while, and a kind of community
grows,’ Michelle says. Of course, the
coffee has a lot to do with it, too. The
Perfect Cup was the home of one of
Johannesburg’s very first roasteries,
and the shop still roasts its own beans
on site every morning, going through
360kg of green beans every month.
In fact, residents have been known
to walk to the café every weekend
What appealed to Michelle most,
however, was the fact that The Perfect
Cup’s warm and cosy atmosphere
made it feel like an extension of
Deidre’s home. She started helping
out at the shop; just a little at first, then
more and more frequently. When she
was eventually appointed manager,
this was an ambience she worked hard
to maintain.
Then, in 2010, Deidre announced she
was planning to sell the shop within
the next year or so, and as Michelle
was manager, she had first option to
purchase. For Michelle, the timing
simply wasn’t right. She was eager to
explore and go adventuring in France.
‘But it soon became clear the plan
wasn’t working out. As it turns out, I’m
so glad I didn’t go overseas. Deidre was
ready to sell earlier than expected, and
I’d have missed out on the opportunity
if I’d travelled.’
Michelle officially took over The Perfect
Cup in September 2010 – but because
she was already a familiar face and
already knew every aspect of the
business, the transition was a very
easy one for her and her customers
alike. ‘Most only realised I’d become
the owner when they asked why they
hadn’t seen Deidre for a couple of
months!’ she laughs.
Because The Perfect Cup was such
an entrenched part of the Parkview
community, she refrained from making
any drastic changes, adding only a few
tweaks, as and when needed. That all
changed this year, when the premises
next door became available for rent.
It had long been Michelle’s dream to
expand (‘Right now it feels as though

Text: LISA WITEPSKI. Photo: PETER WHITFIELD
we’re bursting at the seams!’), and the
new space allows her to do just that.
She’s aware that patrons who regard
The Perfect Cup as their Old Faithful
may balk at the idea of a drastic
transformation, much like you’d do a
double take if your previously staid
best friend suddenly shaved her head.
But, she says, although customers
should expect a bright, airy space with
features like exposed brickwork giving
a nod to current trends, the things that
make The Perfect Cup what it is – the
friendliness of the staff and the warm
atmosphere – are going nowhere.
One thing that’s very, very different,
though, is the menu. The trademark
offerings – like the lightest, laciest
pancakes in Johannesburg – are now
joined by a harvest table produced by
renowned local foodie Kate Naughton.
There’ll also be a new deli section,
more home-baked goods and a
refreshed menu with more options for
vegans and vegetarians.
The partnership with Kate is one of
the things that excites Michelle most
about The Perfect Cup’s new iteration.
She’s also looking forward to seeing
new faces, lured in by live music
on Saturday afternoons and a new
children’s corner.
It’s fitting that the new shop has
opened exactly nine years to the
month since Michelle first took
the helm – a sign, perhaps, that
Parkviewers will enjoy at least another
decade of spooning the froth off
cappuccinos at their favourite
Michelle’s must-haves for business owners
• A good support structure. ‘I don’t think this would have been a success if I hadn’t had the support of my parents.
When I bought the shop, they told me they’d be there for me if I failed – but that they knew I wouldn’t fail. They still help
out if I need a break.’
• Consistency. ‘The real secret to The Perfect Cup is our manager and head barista, Bongani Sibanda. He makes sure that
every cup is as good as the last. But it goes beyond that – if we say we’re going to do it, we do it.’
• Be true to yourself. ‘I’ve said it before, but The Perfect Cup really is an extension of my home, and I want everyone here
to feel that. I couldn’t have worked here if I didn’t believe in it.’
Personalised,
premium skincare
Sorbet Sk-n offers top-notch treatments at the new salon
There’s an amazing new spa option in town ...
one well worth visiting.
Sorbet’s one of our go-to spots for manis and pedis, but now it’s opened Sorbet
Sk-n ... and it’s fabulous!
The first of these upmarket salons specialising in personalised, premium skin care
has just opened in Hyde Park. A chic, sleek spot with shades of grey and white
and touches of light wood, with a young, enthusiastic and well-trained team ... it’s
exactly what we want from a spa.
Sorbet Sk-n focuses on a select few treatments, personalised for your specific
needs. Clients booking for a facial receive a complimentary Visia Skin Analysis –
multi-spectral photos of the face which show everything from wrinkles and spots
to pores and underlying UV damage. This shows the therapist exactly what’s
needed, and where.
So it could be Microdermabrasion (silk peels) – for brightening, pore clarifying,
hydrating or with a punch of vitamin C. Or one of the exceptional Exuviance
facials for boosting and firming, or clarifying acne, or age reversing (oh, yes
please!). The salon offers Dr Schrammek Green Peels, which we’ve heard rave
reviews about, and a comprehensive list of laser hair removal options for men
and women, with your initial half-hour consultation free of charge.
One of our favourite – and massively effective – treatments offered is a
Dermapen treatment ... it really does work for acne and scarring, for pigmentation
and stretch marks, for skin ageing and sun damage. Yes, there are needles. No, it
doesn’t hurt in the slightest – bar a little redness there’s no down time and you
generally see results after the first session.
Sorbet Sk-n has also joined forces with a local doctor who visits the salon once a
week, offering Botox and fillers.
Prices are comparative with other spas giving similar treatments ... and the
therapists offer solid guidelines as to how many specific treatments you’ll need to
treat a problem area, which is fantastic ... no guessing about timelines and costs.
You’ll find the salon at Hyde Park Corner. Details 010-880-5444.
With all the talk of the Rugby World Cup in Japan, our
stomachs couldn’t help but grumble at the thought
of Asian cuisine ... and luckily for us, there’s a new,
seriously hot Asian restaurant in town. Saigon Suzy in
it’s super Instagram-worthy with gorgeous Chinese
of the delicious south-east Asian-inspired street food
(when a dish is ready, it’s brought straight to the table,
even if your pals’ dishes aren’t ready yet). We went
straight for prawn toast with nuoc cham dipping
sauce. It was light, crisp and packed with flavour. With
spring here, we recommend the Vietnamese salad with
lime dressing ... it’s a healthy vegetarian option that
looks and tastes amazing! There’s even a wok ’n roll
option where, in just four steps, you can design your
PLANTING
Nadine Hardy Petzer has turned a healthy
snack venture into a wellness empire.
A SEED
Anyone who grew up in the 80s and
90s will remember the excitement
of the pick ‘n mix counter at the local
supermarket. It had row upon row of
cannisters filled with all kinds of toffees
and chocolates, waiting to be scooped
into a paper bag, weighed and scoffed
at home.
The Health Food Emporium offers
the same concept except, instead of
sweets, those cannisters are laden with
crunchy granola, golden linseed and
flakes of roasted coconut – and, yes,
if you’re someone who takes health
seriously, the buzz of anticipation is
just as intense. Especially when you
catch sight of the giant vat filled with
honey that dominates the centre
of the store, surrounded by a helpyourself
kombucha bar.
The honey and kombucha are, in fact,
the store’s best sellers, says Nadine
Hardy Petzer, who rules this realm of
wellness. She looks around the store as
she speaks, as if she herself can hardly
believe its bounty. And to think it all
started with a seed … NuSeed, in fact.
Nadine explains that her parents had
always been involved in the food
industry, so her own involvement after
she tired of an international modelling
career, seemed like a natural evolution.
‘I dabbled a little in corporate, then
24 Get It Joburg Northern Suburbs September 2019

tried my hand at sales. But when my
parents’ friend introduced them to a
roasted seed product he’d found in
Australia, I was intrigued. Although
wellness hadn’t yet become my
passion, I was a healthy eater – so I
could immediately see the potential of
this delicious, unusual snack.’
Nadine and her father started
experimenting with a roaster they
set up on the mezzanine floor of her
parents’ factory – ‘experiment’ being
the operative word. ‘We had some
very funny moments,’ she recalls,
demonstrating on the same machine
(still in use) how she’d feed the seeds
through one funnel while her father
watched at the other end,
shouting, ‘Faster! No, no,
slower!’
After several attempts, they
perfected their product.
Nadine’s father already
enjoyed relationships
with major retailers, which
enabled them to get their product on
shelves, albeit under the store’s private
label. ‘Back then, healthy eating had
yet to become the phenomenon it
is today, but having a supermarket
presence helped the product grow legs,’
Nadine says. Indeed, enough people
were sprinkling her seeds onto their
salads, oats and smoothies, or simply
snacking on them, to prompt her to
launch her own brand. NuSeed made
its appearance in 2012, five years after
she roasted her first batch of seeds.
Since then, the range has grown, in
line with Nadine’s own interest in
wellness. First came NuMe, a range of
pre-mixed, low carb breads and cereals
– ideal for people following a paleo or
gluten-free diet. ‘I’d just started Banting,
and was fed up with the effort it took
to find ingredients. I knew there had
to be an easier way,’ Nadine says. That
was also the thinking that spurred the
2018 launch of Not So Naughty, the
kind of treats usually off limits to
those watching their sugar and
carb intake.
Then came the Health Food
Emporium – a space that
wasn’t exactly planned, but
came about as a matter of
course. It started as a factory
shop stocking all NuSeed’s
products, but expanded naturally
following the growing demand from
people who desired a healthier
way of life yet weren’t quite sure
how to go about it. The emporium’s
restaurant developed in a similar
fashion. Because she supplies many
ingredients for private labels, Nadine
needed a test kitchen – so why not
use the kitchen to whip up goodies
using her own products, allowing
shoppers to see how they can be
used?
Although Nadine describes the
store as a ‘bridge’ for those travelling
towards a healthier destination,
it’s clear that wellness education
has had an impact on shopper
habits. This explains the popularity
I was a healthy eater – so I
could immediately see the potential of this
delicious, unusual snack.
of products like kefir. ‘People are
increasingly aware of the importance
of gut health, so this is definitely
one of our best sellers. NuSeed also
remains in demand, because people
are constantly on the lookout for
healthier snacking alternatives.’
It can be tricky to keep abreast of
customer expectations, especially
as they are influenced by everchanging
food trends. Nadine admits
she’s obsessive about research – in
addition to online searches, she’s a
regular at international food shows.
She even makes a point of visiting
health stores and food shops when
If you’re looking for a
sweet treat that’s totally
delicious but also nutritious,
try NuMe’s Not So Naughty
range. Nadine says the
brownie mix is her fave as it’s
so decadent she almost feels
she’s cheating ... but she’s not!
The NuMe products start from
R38.95. Find them at Dis-Chem,
Clicks, Pick n Pay, Food
Lover’s and selected
SPAR stores.
she’s on holiday, so she can get
a first-hand perspective on new
products and developing consumer
interests.
It may sound interesting and
exciting, but for an entrepreneur,
the next challenge is always around
the corner. Ironically, one of these
challenges is the rapid growth of
the business, because it means that
Nadine has to shift her mindset out
of operational mode to assume
a more management-oriented,
forward-planning role. At the
same time, heading a business in
the heavily male-dominated food
manufacturing space comes with its
own set of difficulties. ‘Our
clients and suppliers often
fail to take us seriously and
we have to work hard to
prove ourselves,’ she muses.
Not that this is stopping
her, however. Nadine’s next
step will be to move into
even larger premises, while her online
shopping portal is set to launch
shortly.
Her advice to other entrepreneurs?
‘Don’t be afraid to innovate – in fact,
you should innovate constantly. Keep
an eye open for gaps – and make sure
you know what everyone else in your
industry is doing. Above all, remember
that anything is possible if you have
passion. Don’t give up, even though
your business is a dance between
work, family and kids. Yes, it can be
difficult – but that’s all part and parcel
of the dream.’
When two culinary forces join up to form the ultimate vegan-friendly hang-out
spot, you’d better believe the result is worth a visit (or a few). Melrose Arch’s The
Grind Coffee Shop and Hyde Park’s Honest Food Store have opened a plantbased,
vegan-friendly, healthy eatery – The Grind Greenery in Melrose Arch.
Positioned just above The Grind Coffee Shop, it stays true to the Honest Food
Store’s ethos of creating healthy, holistic and honest living. After spending a
festive evening at this new spot enjoying a delicious seven-course meal (our
stomachs were bulging!), we feel we can say with certainty that the meals are
must-trys. While the meals we sampled are not on the a la carte menu, they’re
available as event canapés and it would be an injustice not to tell you about how
delicious they are. For starters, we tried an oh-so-homely charred red pepper
and tomato soup, then a colourful plate of smoked ‘salmon’ ribbons with pickled
carrots and a papaya salad before we put our forks through The Shimeji – a
turmeric risotto with a corn puree, popcorn and shimeji mushrooms. (It paired
beautifully with Bouchard Finlayson Sauvignon Blanc.) There are many ways to
prepare the low-fat protein, tofu, and we have to tell you that the salsa verde tofu
with kale chips, crispy peas and a spring oil is probably our favourite yet. Also try
the nasu nibitashi ... Asian braised eggplant. Not ones to shy away from dessert,
we loosened our belt buckles and tucked into a blueberry sorbet shooter and
raspberry cheesecake with pomegranate seeds and edible flowers. Sweetly
decadent. There’s also a range of tasty home-made, sugar-free, dairy-free and
gluten-free snacks available downstairs at The Grind Coffee Shop. Mmm. Brekkie
starts from R50 and lunch from R70. Details: thegrindgreeney.co.za or follow @
Garden tasks for September
• Plant out summer annuals like salvias,
marigold, bedding dahlias, gazanias,
alyssum, dianthus, and mimulus, water
twice a week and fertilize with a liquid
fertilizer once a month. • Annuals to
grow from seed for a big splash of
colour include marigolds, alyssum,
cosmos, cornflowers and lobelia, as
well as scatter packs which are readymade
mixes of summer annuals for
sun or shade. • Perennials that grow
easily from seed include hollyhocks,
Shasta daisies, asters, scabious, statice,
sweet William, aquilegia, Arctotis, and
foxgloves. • Cut back or tidy up summer
perennials to encourage new growth.
Start watering more regularly and
fertilize with 5:1:5, 3:1:5 or 8:1:5. • Feed
irises with superphosphate. Cannas,
day lilies, coreopsis and dahlias can
still be divided and replanted into well
composted soil. • Clivia shows take place
in September and they’re worth a visit
if you want to add to your collection. •
Amaryllis, day lilies, and Louisiana irises
can be planted from early September,
but wait until the middle of September
to plant Crocosmia and dahlias. • Keep
watering spring flowering bulbs and
liliums. • Fertilize flowering shrubs with
5:1:5 or 3:1:5 and foliage shrubs with
3:2:1. Trim winter flowering shrubs such
as poinsettia. • If not done last month,
scarify, aerate, fertilize and water the
lawn. Water once a week or every
two weeks and mow weekly when
necessary.

Best for patios...
Verbena peruviana Firehouse is perfect for hanging baskets
and containers because it forms a mound of flowers that
easily fills a hanging basket or patio planter. What’s different
about this verbena is that it doesn’t cycle in and out of
flowers. New flowers are opening as the old ones die. The
foliage is tough and disease resistant too. Place in a position
that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Baskets
require daily watering in summer and containers every
second to third day. Use a liquid fertilizer for flowers twice a
month. Plants are available in eight different colours including
purple fizz and lavender. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
There’s a massive move towards healthy eating – from those simply choosing
our favourite restaurants that has fully – and quite deliciously – embraced this
worldwide trend is Lexi’s ... which has just opened a second little restaurant
a growing wall and a spectacular graffiti wall. We’re addicted to the caramel
smoothie bowls – arguably the best in town, they’re perfect for (but certainly
not restricted to) kick-starting your busy day. The falafel wraps will surely convert
a carnivore, and for those looking for sweet treats, it has the yummiest waffles
We’re planting ...
the new bedding impatiens, Beacon,
that blooms from spring to the
first frost and is highly resistant
to downy mildew. Busy Lizzies
(Impatiens walleriana) used to fill
shady gardens, until the fungus
disease wiped them out. After years
of breeding and collaboration, seed
growers have finally bred a highly
resistant variety. It was successfully
trialled overseas and in Joburg last
year and the thumbs-up given for its
release this spring. Beacon does not
require any special treatment. It does
best in shade to semi-shade, requires
well-composted soil and regular
watering. Fertilize once a month
with a liquid fertilizer to encourage
plentiful flowers. Flower colours are
bright red, orange, violet shades,
salmon, white and coral as well as a
mix. This highly resistant impatiens is
identifiable from other varieties by a
colourful Beacon label.
Pack a punch
When motivation to
work out is lost, actress,
celebrity boxing champion
and many people’s
#FitGoals, Nicole Bessick
shares how commitment
needs to take over.
We know her for her roles on local
hit series Broken Vows and the
internationally acclaimed crime thriller
Cold Harbour, but there’s a whole lot
more to actress Nicole Bessick. Her
off-camera roles include being an
anti-bullying activist, celebrity boxing
champion, Shield ambassador and
an all-round wonder woman. We
caught up with the person behind
the characters to get her thoughts on
fitness and motivation.
Nicole has been dubbed ‘Action Barbie’
for challenging stereotypes and for her
representation of strong women on
our local screens. Her leisure activities
include fighting, firearms and fast cars,
largely so she could take control of her
stunts. Whatever her motivation, it’s
clear she’s not the kind of woman to be
pushed around. ‘There’s nothing more
empowering than being able to defend
yourself, and my fight training does just
that,’ Nicole says.
‘Every time I get into the ring, I feel I’m
contributing to eliminating barriers
and shattering the perception of the
limitations on women. With each
fight, I’m amazed at how powerful and
enduring the female body is!’
It’s easy to look at Nicole’s routine of
10 workouts a week and feel a little
intimidated by how this woman is
everyone’s #FitGoals. She keeps up with
her training and fitness at Apex Gym
in Bryanston and Essie Aesthetics at
Unique Physique, donning her workout
gear favourites, DF Fashion, Adidas and
Body Game. ‘I start each morning with
a strength session with my trainer and
internationally acclaimed bodybuilder,
Stefan Estment, and end each evening
with a fight session at Apex Gym (either
boxing or jiu-jitsu), with my coach and
UFC Fighter Don Madge.’
That said, she certainly has days when
she doesn’t want to leave the cosiness
of her bed. ‘Some days are easier than
others, but that shouldn’t influence
your effort,’ Nicole says.
‘On tough days, “commitment” must
pull rank over “motivation”, because
motivation is the first thing that
goes out of the window when we
feel low on energy or have no drive.
Commitment means staying dedicated
to a goal long after the original mood
has left you. It’s the key to whether you
reach your goal or not.’
So what does Nicole Bessick suggest
we couch potatoes do to turn into
the slim-cut French fries we always
dreamed of becoming? ‘Start. It’s that
simple. Start somewhere,’ she says.
‘Every champion was once a beginner.
Take it one day at a time. Ask yourself,
“What can I do in the next 24 hours
to make sure I’m one step closer to
getting to where I want to be?” Keep
doing that, every single day, one day at
Nicole’s motivation tips
1
2
3
4
5
Choose an activity you enjoy. Some days are harder than others when
energy or drive levels are low. But when you choose a fitness activity you
enjoy, sticking to it becomes a lot easier.
Work out in the morning. By getting up early and heading to the gym
before you start your day, you’ve successfully avoided the eight to 10 hours
you’d be able to talk yourself out of going. It’s also incredibly energising and
gives you a great start to your day!
Do meal prep the night before. Training accounts for one hour of
your day, while controlling what you eat makes up the other 23 hours.
Prepare healthy meals the night before so you aren’t tempted to buy food
throughout the day. You don’t know how it’s being prepared or the quality
of the ingredients included.
Dress for a workout, even if you’re not feeling up to it. Research suggests
our brains are susceptible to ‘clothed cognition’, meaning that dressing for
the part can help you fuel your ambition to complete a chosen task.
Sleep. You can’t start an engine on an empty tank.
a time and you’re well on your way!’
It won’t be easy. ‘Your body won’t be
used to that kind of training, your
mind won’t be used to that kind of
conditioning and your stomach may
not be used to that kind of good food.
So the natural reaction is to quit. It’s
only once you start to see results that
fitness becomes an addiction. That’s
why so few people stick to it, so choose
fitness activities you enjoy!’
And don’t despair, dear reader. Cheats
are allowed. Nicole eats six to seven
high carb, high protein meals a day (to
fuel those 10 workouts), but she also
gets a cheat window of two hours each
week when she stuffs her face. ‘Burgers,
fries, chocolate – a great margarita!’ She
also has a weakness for fizzy drinks.
Overall, Nicole’s biggest goal is holistic
fitness. ‘To truly be fit is to have all the
elements of holistic fitness on lock –
the physical (maintaining a healthy
shape or size), the emotional (being
able to deal with whatever comes
your way), the mental (staying sharp
and mentally agile) and the spiritual
(understanding the connectedness of
all things in the world and knowing
where you fit).’ This mindset reflects in
Nicole’s use of social media. ‘While it’s
great to be someone’s #FitGoals, it’s also
important for me to be honest with
those who follow my journey about
the bad days too,’ she says.
‘I’m human. There are days I don’t
want to get out of bed or when I don’t
feel my best and those need to be
shown too.’
FROM
SPIKES
TO SCRUMS
Meet Alyssa Conley:
She’s an Olympic
sprinter-cum-rugby
sevens athlete
who cherishes
consistency,
believing in
yourself – and
cheat days!
Did you know that Michael Jordan
(arguably the greatest basketball star
of all time) was also a phenomenal
baseball player? Turns out South
Africa has its own Michael Jordan in
the form of Olympic sprinter Alyssa
Conley who’s just swapped her track
spikes for rugby boots!
After the World Cup Sevens last
year, the women’s team coach, Paul
Delport, and his conditioning coach,
Tim Qumbu, decided they didn’t have
enough speed. So how could that be
instantly improved? By hiring one of
the fastest women in South Africa,
with a personal best of 11.23 seconds
for the 100m sprint. It’s easy to see
how that could be useful on the
rugby field. ‘My biggest challenge is
to break through my fitness threshold
because with sevens, it’s not about
how fast you run, but about how fast
you can run repeatedly!’ Alyssa says.
Another benefit of being a rugby
novice is that no time need be spent
eliminating bad habits from previous
decades of play. But that doesn’t make
the challenge of learning all the rules,
learning how to change direction
and suddenly stop and, perhaps most
gruelling, learning to take a hit – a big
one at that.
Alyssa’s up to the challenge, however.
‘I realised I needed a new challenge
in life and I wanted to move out of
my comfort zone. I’ve been in an
individual sport for so long and I
wanted to try a team sport. I’m just
trying to be an advocate for women
in sport, proving that if you work
hard and believe in yourself, you can
achieve anything.’
The transition has been going well,
helped along by the inclusion of
ShadowBall training alongside
the women’s sevens training. The
ShadowBall is half a rugby ball that
rebounds off any wall and enables
solo training, allowing players to
work on their skills when the team
isn’t practising. The Pass Booster
programme has been proved to
boost passing and catching abilities
by as much as 266 per cent in four
weeks. Alyssa credits the ShadowBall
training as being integral to her swift
mastery of a completely foreign
sporting discipline. ‘Training with the
ShadowBall has been very beneficial
for me,’ says Alyssa.
‘The training has helped me to
integrate into the new sport and
overcome my personal challenges.
It enables and accelerates quick
movements and reaction time and
it’s helped immensely to be able
to continue practicing at home on
my own.’
Alyssa works out six days a week,
with three to four sessions a day, with
each session lasting at least an hour.
She admits to always wanting to skip
workouts (so it’s not just us) but her
motivation pulls her through.
‘So many women are following my
career path and transition, so that
keeps me motivated. They send me
messages of encouragement and
that keeps my perseverance high
– I never want to give up. I’m also
surrounded by a lot of positivity from
my family and friends. They all keep
me motivated and believe in me.’
Alyssa’s also willing to take it easy –
sometimes. ‘I have a lot of cheat days.
Most of my days are cheat days. I love
eating! My favourite cheat meal is
sushi but I also can’t resist anything
my mother bakes. If I’m fat one day,
we’ll blame it on my mother.’
So what does a day in Alyssa’s life look
like? ‘First, coffee. I’m a coffee addict.
I then go to do my first session in
the morning. I love training in the
morning! Next I’ll see a few clients
because I do personal training. Then
I go for another session of either
running or else skills and conditioning
with Shadowball Academy. Then I
coach athletics at a high school. After
that, I do another workout if it’s on my
programme.’
Alyssa’s motivation tips:
1. Know your goals and keep your eye on your vision.
2. Be consistent. Work every day to get closer to your goals.
3. Be yourself and believe in yourself.
4. Surround yourself with positivity – people who pick you up,
not put you down.
5. You never know how close you are to your goal, so never give up!
You can spot Alyssa training
at the Crossfit gym at World of
Rugby wearing her favourite
Nike workout clothes. ‘I enjoy a
bit of weight-training mixed with
high-intensity cardio. Running is
actually my least favourite, believe
it or not.’ It is pretty hard to
believe as she first started running
at an age when most kids are
still figuring out how to tie their
shoelaces. ‘I got into track at the
age of four. I’d been running for
about 21 years before I decided to
make the switch. I always wanted
to be an Olympian.’ Now that
dream has been achieved and
her track goals have been met.
Next up is the qualifying event
for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for
Rugby Sevens in October, but we
know Alyssa’s got it all in hand.
‘My athletics career has taught me
about perseverance and mental
strength,’ she explains.
‘I want to use these assets and
be an inspiration for women
everywhere, showing what’s
possible through hard work.’
A trio of ways to keep you feeling in tip-top shape
1Intentionally or not, we seem 2Let’s
to find any excuse to avoid
working out ... but not any
more! We’ve discovered just
the solution to tone and
sculpt our body (phew!) in
a class that’s great fun. (Yay!)
Bootybarre and barre fusion classes at
the fabulous fitness and dance studio
in Norwood, Fitness Booty-ique
seriously took us through our paces.
Ahead of the class, owner Gaelle Le
Lagadec explained barre features a
hybrid of ballet, yoga and Pilates with
added small, controlled movements
and the use of props, like resistance
bands, core balls, sliders and 1kg hand
weights, to work off our booty! And
we did! It was hard going contracting
and releasing our muscles, but Gaelle
promises the more regularly we tone,
the more trimmed we’ll be ... and that
our energy levels will increase. Barre
also helps with gaining strength,
rehabilitating injuries and improving
posture and flexibility. Here’s to that!
Gaelle has a fantastically energetic vibe
that gets the whole class motivated
and she showcases the moves first, so
they’re easy to follow. Trying out the
ballet- and dance-inspired moves was
comical (and effective). One move
follows the other so it’s a class that’s sure
to keep you on your toes, and coming
back for more ... with friends! Around
R180. Details: fitnessbootyique.co.za
be honest, we Joburgers live seriously stressful lives ... and
‘tense’ pretty much sums up how we were feeling before we
stepped into Nadine Hurwitz’s gorgeous, tranquil Yoga Lova studio
in Illovo. As the class begins, Nadine turns on a gentle soundtrack to
soothe our busy minds ... and that’s just what yoga’s all about: Mind
and body. The movements help to build fitness, strengthen muscles
and create a balanced, centred mental state. And it’s a workout, all
right ... our beginner’s muscles were aching the next day! But we vowed we’d
make this our regular form of exercise. Nadine creates a comforting environment
... she’s super-interactive with everyone in the class, even while she demonstrates
each movement. (We don’t know how she does it!) We left feeling rejuvenated
and ready to tackle our (never-ending) list of chores. Honestly, it’s really worth a
3Cardio on a treadmill can be yawn-worthy ... so luckily for us there are two
really great reasons to pull on our takkies, call up our buddies and hit the
tarmac. (Both are for great causes, other than shedding some kilos.) The
Joburg leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge hits the streets around
Marks Park Sports Club on October 6. Run an easy 5km or push yourself in
the 10km race. The vibe’s always electric, and you can take your old takkies
along for the ‘Drop off a pair and show you care’ campaign. Reach for Recovery is the
beneficiary of this year’s race ... in light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
R100. Details: sparjoburgrace.co.za • If walking’s more your thing, put some mileage
on your legs in a 5km or 8km crusade against breast cancer in the Avon Justine
iThemba Walkathon ... now in its 14th year! Also at Marks Park Sports Club.
October 20. R175. Details: ithembawalkathon.co.za
If you’re seeking high-end active wear, look to qualified trainer and barre instructor,
Taz Falconer ... she specialises in feminine fitness, so she sure knows what works
best! She owns Alchemy, a conceptual, multifaceted store in Hyde Park Corner that
offers international activewear, inspirational stationery and travel inspo as well as
other lifestyle and gift-related products. Everything in the store has been chosen
with the conscious intention of elevating consumers’ lives ... it even stocks SheThinx
period-proof underwear for women and teens. We’re pretty obsessed with this store.
DNA testing can tell a lot
Don’t underestimate the impact the
environment and factors like diet
and exercise can have on our health.
So says Dr Danny Meyersfeld who
founded DNAlysis Biotechnology ... a
company that uses cutting-edge DNA
testing to give us and our medical
practitioners information on our health
status so we can reach optimum
wellness. Danny felt there was a lack
of awareness in SA of the healthcare
advances that were made possible
by the Human Genome Project ... and
so, in 2007, DNAlysis Biotechnology
was born and it offers a range of
DNA tests. It’s pretty simple to take
them – your doctor can order a DNA
kit through the DNAlysis network to
be delivered to your door. Don’t eat
or drink for an hour beforehand, then
use the swab sample kit to take a
DNA sample from the inside of your
cheek and courier it to the lab. Danny
explains, ‘Our aim is to get this research
into the public domain, so people
can make more informed decisions
and practitioners can work with a
patient’s DNA, instead of against it.’
The pharmacogenomics tests, like
Medcheck, can tell how our unique
genetics determine how our bodies
will respond to specific medication.
There are a few nutrigenomic tests,
and the DNA Diet is a firm favourite ...
it can determine what type of diet we
should follow. DNA Sport is a groundbreaking
test that analyses key areas in
the realm of physical activity ... like how
fast our body is likely to recover after
an intense workout. DNA Oestrogen
can tell how our bodies metabolise
oestrogen and our personal risk factors,
while DNA Skin tests 18 genes related
to skin health to help us improve our
skincare. There’s even DNA Mind that
can look at the genetic variations that
could have an effect on a person’s
mental health. With one of the leading
genetic testing labs in the world on
our doorstep in Illovo, it’s worth a try!
