COMMUNITY NEWS 

A ‘Better Connected’ 

Beaconsfield 

What was born out of a steering group 

in 2018 has led to a vision for a ‘Better 

Connected Community’ in Beaconsfield. 

The aim is a more socially inclusive community with 

local neighbourly environments for the benefit of 

residents in Beaconsfield and the surrounding area, 

supporting healthy and fulfilling lives regardless of a 

person’s circumstances or age. 

We wish to work with various organisations 

throughout the town to deliver improvements 

in mobility and social inclusion, supporting the 

Community Bus, and helping to deliver, for 

example, increased footfall and participation in 

existing community activities and to encourage 

and promote the benefits of getting involved in 

the local community. 

A website is being developed to promote and link 

local organisations. 

Our Charity – ‘Better Connected Beaconsfield’ 

wants to bring together a ‘Community of 

Communities’. 

Similar initiatives in other towns have improved 

people’s lives and supported local communities. 

With your support we can take a step in the right 

direction. Please join us to help make a difference

Who are the Squirrels? 

The original founders of ‘The Squirrels’ 

were Harry Harmsworth, Roddy Rodbourn, 

Ray Davison, Norman Christy, George Hunter, 

Ron Wortham and Fred Manton.

There was at the time on television a cartoon 

called, ‘Secret Squirrel’. The main character being 

a squirrel who carried a small case from which 

he produced anything from a gun, to a car or 

aeroplane. As the founders carried similar cases to 

hold regalia, it seemed appropriate that the name 

of the new organisation should be ‘The Squirrels’. 

The founding Secretary, Norman Christy, formed 

a charity, registered with the Charity Commission, 

called ‘The Squirrels’. The first meeting took place on 

17th January 1978. 

Many small charities and individuals have been 

helped by the charitable contributions and individual 

efforts of The Squirrels over the years. In recent years, 

the principal charitable event has been to fund, 

organise and support, a Christmas Party for 50 to 100 

senior citizens who would not otherwise have enjoyed 

a Christmas dinner amongst friends or family. 

The day begins in the morning when everyone is 

collected and taken by coach to the Centre where 

they are greeted with an aperitif. The meal is full 

of traditional Christmas fayre including wine and 

concludes with carol singing and a raffle draw. 

Everyone leaves with a Christmas gift and singing 

frequently continues on the coach when they are 

driven home. 

The Mayor, Alex Dunlop and Dick Smith, 

Beaconsfield’s Town Crier (not in the photograph) 

are also fellow Squirrels and the present Chairman 

is Derek Watts. This is a small but successful 

organisation and we applaud their efforts in the 

local community. 

Beaconsfield Together is part of Community Together

The Beaconsfield Drinking Fountain Group 

The Beaconsfield Drinking Fountain Group have been raising funds for 

a public drinking fountain and bottle filler, with the generous support of 

Beaconsfield LAF, Beaconsfield Decides, Waitrose and Beaconsfield WI. 

As our preferred site is on common land, we are required to issue the 

following notice: 

Notice is given that the Beaconsfield Drinking Fountain Group has applied to the 

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 

38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out restricted works on the Town Hall Green, 

Beaconsfield. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of 

the Secretary of State. The proposal is to install a drinking fountain with bottle refill 

station with a low protective wall covering 3 square metres. The drinking fountain will 

be located on the south-west corner of the Green, by the main road towards the station. 

A copy of the application form and accompanying documents can be inspected at The Town Hall, 

Penn Road, Beaconsfield, Bucks HP9 2PP during normal office hours until 10 December 2019. 

A copy of the form and documents may be obtained from Dr P D Sanders, Beaconsfield Drinking

SCHOOL NEWS 

Boris pops in 

Headteacher Jenny Barnett, from Saint 

Mary and All Saints primary school in 

Beaconsfield was delighted to be chosen 

for a surprise visit from Boris Johnson 

on Friday 11th October. The school 

was recommended for a visit by the 

Department of Education, which was 

a great accolade. 

Headteacher Jenny, Bob Mason (chair 

of governors), and Annemarie Philpot, 

(deputy headteacher) and the school house 

captains greeted Boris as he arrived at the 

school. 

He toured the school happily, interacting 

with, and chatting to pupils and teachers 

and visiting a range of classes including 

Reception and Year 5.

questions, including whether he enjoyed 

art as a child. His response was that he 

wasn’t particularly good at it but he did 

thoroughly enjoy the lessons. 

Jenny Barnett said later, “We were delighted 

that Boris Johnson made time out of his very 

busy schedule to visit our school. There was 

an incredible excitement before and after his 

visit and it is a great memory that will stay 

with us for a long time.” 

Boris also visited a year 2 class that was 

painting tigers based on the picture 

‘Tiger in a Tropical Storm’ by artist, 

Henry Rousseau. Boris sat with pupil 

Lyla Shepherd-Robinson and had a go 

at painting his own tiger alongside her. 

The children were not overawed by his 

presence and asked him a number of

Christmas tree tips 

How to choose your tree 

and keep it looking great! 

• Decide where you are going to put your tree 

and measure the space available 

• Ideally, place it away from heat sources and 

near a wall plug socket if you want lights 

• Putting your tree in a corner saves it from 

knocks and allows you to choose the best 

side to display 

• Try to buy a freshly-cut tree from a reputable 

nursery 

• Pull your hand towards you along the branch - 

needles should not fall off if the tree is fresh 

• Don’t buy a tree earlier than December 

• Put it in water as soon as you get home. 

Keep it in a cool, dry, sheltered place until 

you’re ready to bring it into the house 

• If you won’t be setting up your tree indoors 

on the same day, take off any netting and saw 

off one inch (2.5cm) from the bottom of the 

trunk 

• Trees absorb up to 4 litres of water in the 

first day so use a large bucket and keep it 

regularly topped up to over the base of the 

trunk 

Once inside: 

• Make sure the tree is well secured and stable 

• Place it away from radiators and other heat 

sources 

• Fill the tree stand with water and keep it filled 

so the base is always covered. A freshly-cut 

tree can consume a gallon of water in 24 

hours!

Squadron cadet 

award evening 

On 4th September, the Mayor, Alex Dunlop, 

was honoured to be invited to the 606 

(Beaconsfield) Squadron air cadet award 

ceremony. 

He met various individuals 

in the command chain, in 

particular Flight Officer Sam 

Cairns RAFAC, and WO Alison 

Tolson RAFAC.There were 

some very constructive and 

positive speeches from many 

of the young cadets.They 

enjoyed the projects they 

were involved with, and 

described them as being 

educational and engaging. 

Cadets who had successfully completed their tasks 

for the year were presented with awards, including 

the Olympic Shield, the Brampton Trophy and the 

Mayor’s Cadet Award.

The mayor believes it is a fantastic organisation, 

which he supports with great enthusiasm and he 

encourages mums and dads to give their children 

the opportunity to become a cadet and to strive and 

succeed in this great organisation. It offers structure, 

goals and discipline and helps produce young men 

and women who are mature and confident, but most 

importantly, they have a lot of fun. 

Everyone is welcome to join and they can choose 

to go into the army, air or sea cadets.

Beaconsfield Round Table will be hosting 

their 51st fireworks display at Beaconsfield 

Rugby Club on Saturday 2nd November. 

Gates open at 5pm and the display starts at 

7pm. There will be a live band, a DJ, bouncy 

castles and lots of food stalls on site.

Beaconsfield Round Table is always pleased 

to welcome new members. It’s a great 

organisation, which makes a genuine difference 

in Beaconsfield’s local community. Over the last 

few years the money raised has helped children 

diagnosed with cancer, a recent amputee, youth 

action charities, an eating disorder charity, air 

ambulance, a children’s cancer fund and many 

more charities and good causes. 

Beaconsfield Round Table is both a registered 

charity and a social club. It meets once a month at 

a Beaconsfield pub to catch up and discuss or 

‘The Trumps’ stretcher team winning and finishing in 8 minutes 

40 seconds. Pictured with the Mayor of Beaconsfield 

plan the next event. There is a new members’ 

social on 19th November in the Swan pub in Old 

Beaconsfield from 8pm onwards. Please feel free 

to pop down for a pint on the club and to join in 

with making a difference in our local community, 

establishing connections and having great fun 

doing so.

Beaconsfield School 

in the Community 

Keeping Beaconsfield tidy 

At The Beaconsfield 

School we pride 

ourselves on having 

respect not only for 

each other but also for our surroundings 

and the space that we all share. 

As a school we are supporting our local 

community with our Year 7s running a litter 

picking scheme during the first term of 

2019/2020. Students will be speaking to the 

public, cleaning up litter and reporting any 

graffiti they see around town. Each student 

involved will be given a set of equipment 

including a litter picker, a high visibility vest, 

rubbish bags, gloves and safety guidance. They 

will then sort through the rubbish and recycle 

items accordingly. 

Alfriston’s Unite 

Ambassadors 

Glossophobia is a common phobia that 

is thought to effect up to 75% of the 

population. 

It can damage careers, lead to sleepless nights, 

cause nightmares and induce panic attacks. 

Students from Alfriston School have however 

demonstrated incredible resilience to this 

debilitating phobia during recent trips to 

Hungary and Estonia. 

If you are familiar with the dietary preferences 

of the people from these otherwise quite 

disparate nations, you may reasonably conclude 

that glossophobia could be the fear of pickled 

food. If, however, your knowledge of the Greek 

language matches your knowledge of 

Hungarian and Estonian cuisine then you would 

have deduced that glossophobia is in fact the 

fear of public speaking; the word being derived 

from ‘glossa’ meaning tongue in Greek. 

Senior citizen tea party - 

YOU’RE INVITED! 

On Monday 9th December between 3-5pm 

our Year 7 students will be hosting a tea party 

for senior citizens from residential care homes 

around the Beaconsfield area and the wider 

local community. Food and refreshments 

will be made and served by some of our 

students and our Year 10 students will be 

providing musical entertainment.

to produce a peer to peer youth programme 

that focuses on social education, championing 

diversity, embracing equality and encouraging 

cohesion for young people. 

The programme, known as Unite Ambassadors, 

has now reached the end of its pilot phase 

and is being rolled out at a series of events 

in the countries that have contributed to this 

collaborative project. It has been at these 

events where the Alfriston students have 

explained to attentive audiences the social 

actions that they instigated as a result of 

their involvement in the programme. If you

Dress your home 

for Christmas 

The countdown to Christmas is now on and 

if you want to take a curated approach to 

tastefully decorating your home you may 

find the following tips helpful. 

Starting with your front door: how about stringing 

a trio of magnolia wreaths down the door instead 

of using evergreens for your Christmas wreath? 

Embellish with faux fruits and pine cones, or make 

a monogrammed wreath from faux red berries. 

If you want inspiration, why not attend one of 

Soulla’s Christmas workshops to create your own 

wreath from scratch and enjoy a great experience 

at the same time? See page 24 for more details. 

Topiary trees adorned with fairy lights on either 

side of your entrance and large floor lanterns full 

to the brim with string lights illuminating the porch 

can be very striking. 

Inside, the classic reds and 

greens never go out of style 

for interior festive décor, 

but you do not have to 

restrict your palette: go 

bold with deep purples, 

corals and metallics. A 

more subdued monochrome 

colour scheme can have just 

as much impact and is 

elegant too. A wise rule of 

thumb is to stick to two or 

three tones. 

Add texture to garlands running up your stair 

bannister - experiment with silver-sprayed 

eucalyptus, interspersed with hanging droplet 

baubles or hanging feathers. Intertwine with 

Christmas lights for added sparkle. Give internal 

doors a festive makeover too: tie a small cluster 

of pinecones to a ribbon and hang them from 

each door handle. For walls, swap some pictures 

with Christmas wreaths or antlers to spruce up the 

celebratory decor. 

Table settings should be about glamour, layering 

and clustering. Height creates impact, as does 

crowding and continuity. Instead of one 

centrepiece, scatter tall candlesticks with small 

votive candles, whimsical paper Christmas trees, 

blooms bursting from silver julep cups and a bundle 

of baubles that will throw sparkle around the table. 

Instead of using a tablecloth and placemats, place 

two table runners on either side of the table. 

Suspending a cluster of iridescent baubles from the 

light pendant will create a festive snowdrop effect. 

As for the Christmas tree, this is your chance to get 

creative. Whether it is baubles, ribbons, garlands 

or faux flowers that you decide to hang from your 

tree, stick with a colour theme to wow your guests 

and make you feel right at home this Christmas.

Common baby worries

1. Burping, colic or reflux? 

When a baby feeds, air 

bubbles can become trapped 

in their tummy and they don’t have 

the muscle strength or experience to expel 

that air themselves, which can lead to 

discomfort and they may cry or pull their legs 

up to their tummy. If winding doesn’t relieve it 

contact your GP for more advice, as they may 

have colic or reflux. 

2. Jaundice is one of the most common 

conditions for newborns and is usually 

harmless. 

Symptoms include mild yellowing of the skin 

and whites of eyes, dark yellow urine and pale 

coloured stools but it usually resolves after 

a couple of weeks. If symptoms worsen, 

the yellowing skin spreads or they become 

reluctant to feed contact your GP immediately. 

3. Is your baby feeding enough? 

This is a common concern, especially when 

breastfeeding as you cannot measure your 

milk. Look out for five to six wet nappies each 

day and three to four stools. When your baby is 

weighed, you will be reassured they are getting 

enough and growing. If you are concerned 

don’t hesitate to call your GP. 

4. Eye discharge is common in babies. 

Some babies need more time for their tear 

ducts to develop fully. Use boiled water that 

is at room temperature to clean their eyes and 

wipe gently from the inside to outside corners 

and use a new piece of cotton wool for each 

wipe. Speak to a nurse or GP if there are any 

signs of infection: swelling, redness or increase 

and/or change of discharge colour. 

5. Baby’s Skin 

Your baby’s skin may change after birth and 

become dry and blotchy. Usually no treatment 

is needed. If the skin becomes cracked or the 

issue persists for several months, then contact 

your GP for appropriate treatment. 

Don’t forget to take care of YOUR post-natal 

health too! 

1. Rest! 

Your body will need time to heal, adjust 

to producing milk and to disrupted sleep. 

When your baby sleeps, try to sleep too. 

2. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. 

Five fruit and veg a day and whole-grains 

will help to keep your bowels moving. If 

breastfeeding, you will need to drink more 

than usual to produce milk and to prevent 

constipation and headaches. 

3. Exercise. 

From about six weeks, if you have no 

complications, you can start gentle stretches 

and exercise. Build it up slowly. 

4. Postnatal depression affects 

approximately one in ten women. 

Contact your GP to get the support you need. 

Signs include difficulty sleeping, persistent low 

mood or sadness, difficulty bonding with your 

baby, lack of energy, anxiety, or difficulty with 

concentration.

Avoid colds and influenza 

this winter 

We’ve reached that time of year 

when colds and coughs are circulating. 

There are more than 200 different 

common cold viruses and you might 

think that catching one is inevitable, 

but I have a top tip for you to help fight 

them off - and I bet it’s not one you’d 

expect! Forget vitamin tablets and 

superfood powders – I’m talking about 

your gut! 

Did you know that more than 70% of your 

immune system is based in your gut? 

Research has shown that it’s possible to 

reduce the frequency of catching coughs 

and colds by supporting the beneficial 

bacteria that live there. This is often my first 

advice for clients who come to me seeking 

advice on boosting their immune system. 

Luckily, there are lots of simple ways you can 

keep your gut ‘happy’. 

HEALTH NEWS 

fermented foods. These are foods that contain 

live bacteria to populate the gut – sometimes 

referred to as ‘probiotic’ foods. Unsweetened, 

natural live yoghurt, milk or water kefir, kombucha, 

sauerkraut, kimchi and miso are all examples of 

fermented foods and most can be found in large 

supermarkets or your local health food store. You 

might try adding some natural yoghurt or kefir 

to some granola and berries for breakfast, or sip 

some warm miso as a comfort drink (don’t make 

the miso too hot - it will kill off the bacteria). 

Gut bacteria thrive on fibre, so increasing your 

intake of fruit and vegetables is an easy way to 

help. Aim for five a day – more if you can (one 

portion is about 80 grams) and try to ‘eat a 

rainbow’. Just as we have different preferences, 

so do different strains of bacteria. So, eating a 

wide variety is the best way to ensure that each 

strain is getting what it needs. Another way to 

pack more fibre into your diet is to swap refined 

carbohydrates for complex carbohydrates – brown 

pasta and grains rather than the white varieties 

(which are much lower in fibre and nutrients).

Q & A with Janine about the 

conveyancing process 

Here are my answers to some 

popular questions I am often 

asked, which I hope you will 

find useful in understanding 

the conveyancing process a 

little better. 

How long will it take? Average time 

between instructing your solicitor and 

moving in is 10-12 weeks but many 

transactions proceed more quickly, 

and some more slowly. 

Why so long? The process itself follows 

Law Society protocol but don’t forget 

also that your solicitor is having to 

deal with many different people all the 

time, such as estate agents, mortgage 

advisors, other solicitors, your lender, 

the Land Registry and property search 

providers. Your solicitor is working on 

your behalf to carry out searches on your 

new home, to check the title to ensure 

you can do with or use the property as 

you wish (can you build that extension? 

are there sufficient access rights to the 

property?) and to report to you and 

your lender on all those things. There 

is usually also a chain (linking a sale 

with a purchase) and everyone in that 

chain needs to be ready to exchange at 

the same time. Last, but not least, the 

phone of your solicitor will ring all day 

long (“just a quick question, Janine”) 

and they will receive emails that need to 

be responded to (I usually get over 100 

per day). 

What is a “chain”? To avoid the risk 

and cost of owning two houses at the 

same time, people usually elect to buy 

and sell simultaneously. A number of 

linked transactions therefore arise, 

each dependent on the other. 

Exchange of contracts must take place 

simultaneously in all transactions, 

meaning that the speed of progress is 

dictated by the slowest link in the chain. 

What is the difference between 

exchange and completion? Exchange 

is when the transaction becomes legally 

binding and completion is the day you 

get the keys and the property is yours. 

Completion is usually 1-2 weeks after 

exchange (your lender needs to get your 

mortgage monies to your solicitor) but 

it can be any agreed time in the future. 

Before exchange, nothing is legally 

binding and either party may withdraw. 

Why do you need to report certain 

things to my lender? Remember, your 

lender will often have a bigger stake in 

the property than you and your solicitor 

is not only acting on your behalf but on 

the lender’s behalf too. They need to 

know that their security is good, that the 

title to the property has no issues.

it’s advisable to look up for 20 seconds at a 

distance of more than 20 feet every 20 minutes. 

Think of it as the stretches you do if you’ve been 

working in the garden. Also If you wear glasses 

consider having ‘blue control’ lenses. 

They can help with the fatigue caused by the blue 

light that’s emitted from screens. It isn’t a tinted lens 

and is slightly different to a ‘reflection-free’ lens. 

What about driving at night? Have you noticed 

that with the trend for higher vehicles like SUVs 

and MPVs, headlights are much higher? They also 

have brighter adaptive lights which is great for 

the driver but can be annoying to oncoming car 

drivers and passengers. 

The advent of lenses specially designed for 

driving may help. Enroute lenses have a special 

glare filter and the option of an enhancing filter. 

This can offer drivers and passenger less glare, 

fewer reflections and better contrast in low light 

conditions. They are available as single vision 

lenses or as varifocals specially designed to give 

an enhanced field of view for distance and the 

dashboard, so they are great for just leaving in the 

car for driving. 

It can also be a strain to read in the autumn and 

winter months. It helps if you have a good source 

of light; reading lamps are especially good as they 

have a bare bulb that can be angled over your 

shoulder to shine directly at what you are reading. 

Above all it makes sense to eat a healthy diet and 

have your eyes checked regularly and ask your 

opticians if you have any questions.

How can I boost my 

state pension? 

The new ‘flat-rate’ state pension was 

ushered in on 6 April 2016, affecting 

everyone reaching state pension age 

on or after 6 April 2016. 

This means millions of older people aren’t 

affected by it and have simply carried on 

receiving their state pension under the old 

system. While the Government’s aim has been 

to make the new system fairer for all and easier 

to understand, it can still be a minefield – and 

some people have lost out from the overhaul. 

Regardless of whether you’re under the old or 

new state pension system there are ways you 

can boost the amount of state pension you’ll 

receive. However, they need to be considered 

carefully. 

The official Retirement Age 

You receive your state pension when you 

reach the Government’s official retirement 

age. What that is depends on when you were 

born. To reduce costs, the official retirement 

age is gradually being raised. It is increasing to 

66 for men and women by April 2020, then to 

67 by 2029, with a further rise to 68 expected 

between 2037 and 2039.

you have any gaps in your NI record by 

getting a state pension statement or calling 

the Government’s Future Pension Centre 

on 0845 3000 168 and they’ll send you a

contributions’. Those retiring after 6 April 2016

Is it worth it? 

Buying a full extra year for £780 will boost your 

pension by £4.80 a week, equivalent to about 

£250 a year. So, if you buy one extra year, you’ll 

earn back what you paid in just over three years, 

which is an investment return very hard to find 

elsewhere! 

Buy ‘extra’ pension years 

If you’ve got spare savings and can afford to be 

without the cash in the short term, it’s possible 

to replace some missing NI qualifying years. 

This could lead to a big increase in your basic 

state pension pay-out over your retirement. In 

a nutshell, you pay a one-off lump sum to buy 

a higher state pension sum. Assuming you live 

long enough, the extra cash you earn from a 

bigger weekly state pension could be worth 

£1,000s over a lifetime.

Demand for property in Beaconsfield 

remains high despite the continued 

uncertainty surrounding Brexit, experts 

have said. 

Real estate specialists Savills recently outlined 

local house market trends at a research event at 

Cliveden House in Taplow. 

Hosted by the firm’s Beaconsfield office, guests 

were told that town centre properties close 

to railway stations and within easy reach of 

shops and restaurants were proving particularly 

popular, as were those in well-connected areas 

such as Gerrard’s Cross, Penn and the Chalfont 

villages.

football club - Rams 

Well known for its cricket and rugby 

sides, Beaconsfield also boasts a 

successful football club - The Rams - 

based at Holloways Park, directly 

opposite the service station. 

Beaconsfield Town FC plays in the BetVictor 

Southern League Premier Division South, Step 

3 in the Non-League Pyramid. 

This season The Rams launched an Under-18 

team and an Academy side, both with the aim 

of providing future players for the first team. 

Plans are also in place to develop a ladies side, 

one for veterans, and one for the increasingly 

popular pastime of ‘walking football’. 

Both the first team and academy sides are 

managed by Gary Meakin, a qualified UEFA 

‘A’ Licence coach. Captain of The Rams is Wes

Rugby Club 

Alan Hansen famously challenged Sir 

Alex Ferguson with the “you can’t win 

anything with kids” comment that went 

down in football folklore. 

Well Beaconsfield RFC are also putting this 

statement to the test with a reliance on youth 

players that surpasses any of the club’s sixty 

odd years in existence. 

This summer we had a number of key players 

retiring as well as others moving into London. 

Additionally we have been cursed with injuries 

and illnesses and cruelly just 2 minutes into our 

second match we lost our club captain for the 

season with a nasty broken ankle. 

However yet again testament to the strength 

in depth at the club, we have relied heavily on 

youth players for crucial matches, putting us at 

Rangers, who also played for AFC 

Wimbledon as they rose through the non- 

League ranks. Fans of Wycombe Wanderers 

will remember Dean Morgan, who currently 

leads the attack for Beaconsfield. 

As well as an award-winning playing surface 

the Club also boasts a fantastic 120-capacity 

newly-refurbished venue, Holloways Park. 

With a fully-licensed bar with a new dance floor, 

outdoor terrace and enclosed garden it is 

perfect for all types of event. The Holloways

the 2020 GX Fun Run taking place at 

East Common on 17th May 2020! 

Registration opens in February and for the 

first time children aged 7 years and upwards 

will also be able to enter the 5km run. There 

will also be a specific children’s race for 

those aged between 4 and 9 years. Based on 

previous years, the GXFUNRUN is expected to 

attract a huge crowd of race participants and 

supporters, who will gather on East Common 

to enjoy a day of fun-filled activities and
