ministry
of sound,
london.
Not many clubs can claim to have started a worldwide
music and lifestyle brand while shaping the clubbing
movement as we know it today.
28
The vision upon opening Ministry of Sound, London
(MoS) in 1991 was to import the world’s most
famous DJs to the UK so that dance music fans could
experience fi rst hand the music and DJs they adored.
MoS quickly become to London what Studio 54
was to New York, and what transpired became the
stimulus for the development of house music and
superclubs in Britain. Over the years MoS London
has established a cult following among clubbers that
extends far beyond English borders, a sensation that
has led to other MoS operations in the UK
and overseas.
“What started as a single London warehouse based
nightclub has now expanded around the world and
continues to do so,” says David Bradshaw, Head
of Production, Ministry of Sound. “We are a dance
music brand, and as such try to envelop all areas
pertaining to that. Our philosophy is simple; we give
our customers what they want.”

‘‘ our philosophy is simple; we give
our customers what they want. ’’
David Bradshaw, Head of Production, Ministry of Sound.
29

‘‘ Lighting has a positive
draw and we are continually
trying to improve our offer
for our customers. ’’
David Bradshaw, Head of Production, Ministry of Sound.
30

And what customers want is a top class sound and light system. Lighting is
an important element in any nightclub and MoS is no different. “Lighting has a
positive draw and we are continually trying to improve our offer for our customers.
It is our philosophy to continually move forward, always improving, always trying
new things, striving to look better than any other nightclub.”
Martin Professional became involved with MoS London in 2002 with a Martin
lighting and fog package that replaced existing equipment which had been in situ
since the club’s opening. Ministry’s infamous Box, where DJ’s from around the
world reign supreme over clubland’s trendiest clientele, and other areas like The
Bar and Lounge Bar, are outfi tted with award-winning MAC moving heads, Martin
effect lights and atmospheric Jem smoke machines.
Decorative fl oor pattern, bar accent, scenic lighting, logo projection, and of course
dancefl oor drama, Martin lighting adds much more than illumination, it invites
guests in, sets the mood, and takes them away to the wee hours of the morning.
31

32
MoS is more than a dance club however. Branding
interests include Europe’s largest independent record
label as well as online radio (broadcast on more than
150 terrestrial stations around the world – and on
airliners too!). MoS also embodies a worldwide touring
business that undertakes around 800 events each year
along with electronics licensing, clothing licensing,
and an internet dance music download store.
“Lighting is also important for other non club
related activities at MoS London,” David Bradshaw
explains. “A normal week can consist of magazine
photo shoots, TV commercial recordings, corporate
presentations and product launches, live bands, fi lm
launch parties – the list is pretty exhaustive. Our
lighting helps us win private hire business because
they are industry standard fi xtures, easy to rig,
reliable and well maintained. We’re not spending
a huge amount of our budget on maintaining our
lighting stock which means we can reduce to almost
zero the amount of lighting we need to hire for any of
our projects. We can do this because we have reliable
equipment that is specifi ed by the various LD’s who
undertake events here. “

‘‘ Our lighting helps us win
private hire business because
they are industry standard
fixtures, easy to rig, reliable
and well maintained. ’’
David Bradshaw, Head of Production, Ministry of Sound.
33

‘‘ The current generation of martin
products has been very reliable. That
is why Martin Professional products
feature in all MoS nightclub businesses
worldwide, and why we insist upon
them with our local partners. ’’
David Bradshaw, Head of Production, Ministry of Sound.
34

David Bradshaw: “In a lighting vendor we look for
market leading products, excellent technical support,
and a worldwide supply network. The current
generation of Martin products has been very reliable.
That is why Martin Professional products feature in
all MoS nightclub businesses worldwide, and why we
insist upon them with our local partners.”
train & kupé,
Denmark.
One of Denmark’s premiere venues, Train, and its
trendy sister club, Kupé, are adjoining facilities whose
concepts complement each other perfectly.
36

While at Train live music and dance-all-night energy
rule, at Kupé intimacy and cozy comfort is the order
of the night. As guests venture back and forth
between Train’s upbeat atmosphere and Kupé’s
more snug setting, Martin lighting plays a key role
in setting the scene.
“At Kupé, Martin products set the mood and give
us the unique freedom to control the atmosphere of
the club so that it fi ts with the theme of individual
events from dinner to lounge and clubbing. At Train,
Martin gear plays a key role in everything we do
from concerts to clubbing. It gives us the ability to
tailor our lighting to whatever type of event we have
from stage lighting to clubbing mayhem and back to
precise spotlighting anywhere in the club.”
‘‘ Martin products
set the mood and
give us the unique
freedom to control
the atmosphere of
the club so that it
fits with the theme
of individual events
from dinner to lounge
and clubbing. ’’
37

38
‘‘ Lighting sets the mood. It can go from
a lounge feeling early in the night to
clubbing mayhem at primetime and back. ’’

Kupé, inspired by contemporary big city club trends,
is a luxurious place to warm up before a concert
or cool down after a long night of dancing. At fi rst
glance it becomes obvious that lighting is what
makes Kupé unique with large ceiling and wallmounted
projection canopies awash in rich color
from Cyclo fl uorescent color changers overlaid with
decorative images from Mania effect lights. Recessed
sky domes backlit with Cyclo luminaires create an
uplifting and spacious feel even though the lounge
sits on the ground fl oor of a multi-fl oor hotel. Other
unique lighting elements include a type of modernday
lava lamp created by Alien color changing spots
projecting down through a tunnel of special lightguiding
mesh while along Kupé’s façade windows a
row of recessed Cyclo wallwashers color the length of
the space and provide a hint of what awaits inside.
“Our philosophy is to offer our guests an experience
that is customized to them specifi cally. Therefore
we focus differently on the various spaces. Guests
should feel as if the venue has been created especially
for them.”
“Lighting sets the mood. It can go from a lounge
feeling early in the night to clubbing mayhem at
primetime and back. This can either make people feel
more welcome in a lounge setting or make the party
even wilder later on. This pays off in entrance and bar
income with our customers staying for a longer period
of time.”
39

Train is the region’s largest and arguably best
club. Certainly it is the most professional. Train
has been running successfully since 1998 and
in that time has proven itself to be one of the
country’s most important live venues with up
to 150 concerts a year by national and
international artists.
“Train has reached international recognition
as a live venue based on our understanding
of performers’ needs and how to fulfi ll those
needs. We keep the facility updated through
continuous maintenance and investments.
Success is built around our service, our technical
possibilities and on our ability to service artists,
guests, personnel and our technical gear. In
the nightclub world it is unique in that we have
been able to maintain the high level of technical
facilities necessary for the successful operation
of the venue.”
40
‘‘ Train’s lighting is known all
over as outstanding and that
alone attracts people who come
to check it out for themselves. ’’
Over the years Train has been used for a wide
range of activities – live shows, corporate
events, fashion shows, production videos, and
special events – and regularly as a nightclub.
A complete Martin rig of MAC luminaires
and effect lights works double duty covering
multiple dance fl oors and a performance stage.
“Clubbers want to be entertained – it’s a fact
of life. If Train looks the same every night our
guests will lose interest fast. Martin lighting is
the easiest way to create a new atmosphere
or create focus on a new event. Train’s lighting
is known all over as outstanding and that
alone attracts people who come to check it
out for themselves.”

42
“Our customers are selective people who are looking
to be entertained in style so our lighting and audio is
of the highest standard. Our philosophy is an overall
quality in everything we do and to give our customers
the experience of getting something for their money
and then a little something extra. One of the major
reasons for our success has been the fact that we do
not compromise on quality in anything we do. We do
it right or we don’t do it at all.”
“We wish to be at the forefront of what clubs have
to offer and Martin is right up there. The clubbing
and concert environment is very hostile to electronic
devices so it is important to keep the gear updated to
secure a fl awless and unique performance. We look
for a good product range that will suit our needs and
Martin has it all from simple light solutions to stateof-the-art
lighting products for the biggest, most
dolls lounge,
las vegas.
Hardly a week goes by that PURE Nightclub at
Caesars Palace in Las Vegas isn’t in the pages
of national celebrity publications or on national
entertainment television.
The club’s ability to secure the top-name celebrities
(Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and
many more) and celebrated special events is unique,
even among Vegas’ competitive nightclub landscape.
From the moment it opened a few short years ago,
PURE has been Las Vegas’ club to see and be seen.
Maintaining PURE’s superior position requires
constant diligence on many levels, including focused
attention on the club’s entertainment technology
systems. Neu Visions Design (NVD) supplied and
installed a Martin lighting system back in 2004
and has overseen the club’s lighting gear since its
opening. “PURE Management Group was looking
for a powerful and versatile lighting system that
could cover the venue’s approximate 10,000 square
foot main room,” states NVD’s Managing Director
Adam Camp, who also conceived the club’s
theatrical lighting design and enhanced parts of the
architectural lighting design. “Lighting is the most
underrated factor by the patrons in most venues
yet the lighting creates the atmosphere and a
subconscious comfort level. In keeping with PURE’s
clean theme, we had the challenge of giving it a
dance environment without haze or smoke, which
is unheard of in most nightclubs because without
a mid-air canopy you get no beamage. Therefore
we went with more of a wash look - powerful lights,
saturated colors and lots of impact.”

‘‘ The local support
here in Vegas has
been key and with the
Martin West Coast
reps close by it keeps
the relationship
strong. I use Martin
mainly because of
that relationship.’’
Adam Camp, Managing Director, Neu Visions Design

Photo and movie shoot, TV show, commercial,
music video, corporate event, private party, live
venue, dance club – PURE is all of that and more.
Consequently, the lighting rig needed to be similarly
versatile. “It’s a fl exible space,” Adam says. “We can
make the dance fl oor as big as they want, convert
the upper space to a full stage for live shows like The
Killers or Ashlee Simpson, or large format exterior
branding outside on the roof terrace. We provided a
four layer automated lighting solution - wash, spot,
strobe and effect - that can cover all of that and more,
as well as conventional PAR’s with dichroics for
general highlights and Leko’s for gobo projection.”
Martin MAC moving heads, Atomic strobes and
Martin effect lights highlight the various areas
including a VIP room and Pussycat Dolls Lounge.
PURE’s ultra-clean interior – white leather couches,
white curtains, white columns and white tables -
soaks up any color the Martin lighting system throws
at it. “Owners are very particular about getting the
right color scheme and atmosphere,” Adam states.
“They are very adamant about maintaining a certain
vibe throughout the venue.” Special touches have
been added as well which make the club that much
more appealing like Martin Mania fi re effects onto the
columns and customized gobos for club or corporate
branding. In fact, NVD handles all corporate and
special events at PURE with a list of clients that
includes many of the top Fortune 500 companies.
“We do large format branding by using custom gobos
in the MAC 250s, while on the terrace we customize
MAC 2000s for exterior branding which is visible
outside of the venue from The Strip.” It’s a branding
method that pays dividends for both the client and
the club.
NVD are zealous when it comes to maintaining
the gear at PURE but manufacturer support is also
important. “The local support here in Vegas has been
key and with the Martin West Coast reps close by
it keeps the relationship strong. I use Martin mainly
because of that relationship.”
Adjoining PURE Nightclub and operated by PURE
Management Group is Pussycat Dolls Lounge
where a resident Pussycat Dolls burlesque troupe
performs its erotic stage show with an occasional
added tease from special guests like Eva Longoria,
Nicolette Sheridan or Pamela Anderson. Playing
accompaniment to the performance is a small rig of
MACs decorating two stages, floor, walls and various
tantalizing props such as swings, champagne glass
and bathtub in color and pattern.
that maintains its value and performance
moving heads
what
Moving heads are lights with a fast pan and tilt movement that
can either illuminate with color or project patterns and images.
Award-winning MAC luminaires are the entertainment
industry’s most successful moving heads to date with a range
to cover any size dance floor or live musical event.
where
On your dance floor a moving head can create an awesome
look - even the fixture itself is something special to look at.
Smaller moving heads can also be used gently in areas with
a quieter ambience.
range
150, 250, 400, 575, 700, 1200 Watts.
why
The fact that the light moves means that brilliant light effects
are thrown over a very wide area. They are also capable
of multiple effects (frost, prism, zoom, iris, focus, rotation,
strobe) and outputs, so are extremely flexible in their use and
can serve different functions at different periods of the night.
ideal for
Dance floors, lounges and live music stages.
Scanners
what
Scanners create an abundance of images and colors and
reflect them off a moving mirror. Because only a lightweight
mirror is moved, extremely rapid movements can be achieved.
where
A scanner is a must for the high-energy dance floor but can be
used at reduced speeds to create a more relaxed environment,
too. Because scanners are so fast and above all affordable,
they have become the mainstay of club lighting. Martin offers
scanners for every size of application and budget.
range
150, 250 Watts.
why
A scanner is all about speed. They add excitement and keep
the dance floor filled with drama and energy. Built to last
and feature-rich, Martin scanners offer great value for money
with up to 6000 hours of lamp life.
ideal for
Dance floors.
effects
what
Effect lights are fantastic atmosphere generators. They can
project soft, organic patterns such as fire and water effects
to create a special mood.
where
In lounge and bar areas where the focus is more on
conversation, effect lights create a form of dynamic decor that
can subtly or dramatically change throughout the evening.
range
100, 150, 250 Watts.
why
Effect lights can really transform a space. Otherwise bland
areas of your lounge or bar can be invigorated with subtle
colors and patterns.
ideal for
Lounge area, bar and dance floors.
image projectors
what
Lights that project a logo, message or any customized
image. They are an effective attention-grabber and branding
tool often used to project a product or company logo, or just
to say Happy Halloween or Merry Christmas.
where
Image projectors can be a great way to get your business’
logo noticed. Projected onto floors and surfaces, they are
great on promotional nights or any time you want to project
a clearer message.
range
150, 250 Watts.
ideal for
Entrance and foyers.

fluorescent luminaires
what
Fluorescent provides a simple, affordable lighting solution
with linear RGB luminaires that illuminate surfaces in soft
colors and variable white light. With 20,000 hours of lamp life
and no moving parts they are low maintenance and trouble
free.
where
Excellent for perimeters, cove lighting, wall washing and
ideal for
Bars, restaurants and lounge areas.
Strobes
what
Strobes are the pulse of every dance floor. Ultra bright, they
punch home the beat and keep the crowd screaming for
more. Using powerful Xenon lamps they can flash rapidly in
a range of speeds, intensities and colors from slow to break
neck.
range
3000 Watts.
ideal for
Dance floors.
lasers
what
A child of the 80’s, the laser has made a remarkable
comeback with the emergence of more compact and
affordable products that are packed with great effects and
color. Projected in deep saturated colors or true white, the
midair effect inspires awe on the dance floor. Input any
image via a simple and free software package.
range
54
led
what
LED lighting (Light Emitting Diode) has become
increasingly popular over the last few years as the lights
have become brighter and more reliable. Useful in displaying
imagery and video or as a color changing wash luminaire,
LEDs have become excellent tools in distinguishing your
club or venue.
where
LEDs can be used for floodlighting surfaces and stages,
but also to display video and other images in a large
pixilated format. They offer long lifetime which reduces
costs and hassles.
Media Servers / Video
what
Video and digital effects are becoming more and more
popular in clubs and venues as a complement to lighting,
a way of enhancing the décor, communicating messages
or as an effect in its own right. Even simple video and
animation loops can lend a space a certain charisma and
keep it feeling fresh and vital. Customizable for the ultimate
in digital lighting creativity, Martin media servers are
highly intuitive tools for video and animation playback
with real-time manipulation.
Controllers
what
Great lights are nothing without someone at the wheel.
And the wheel in this case is a lighting controller. Lighting
controllers come in a range to suit every need and are
engineered to make the task as simple as possible.
Visualizers
what
When designing or redesigning the look and feel of your
club nothing is more helpful than a visualization tool capable
of creating a realistic look at your vision through set and
lighting design renderings. This not only takes the guess
work out but simplifies changing looks for special events, or
seasonal changes, to keep your club the hottest in town.
fog & haze
what
Fog and haze are important as an airborne projection canopy
so that the brilliant mid-air effect beams become visible.
Of course, they are also a great effect and atmosphere
generator unto themselves. Martin fog and haze machines
operate on safe water based fluids and come in sizes to suit
venues large and small.
range
600 to 5000 Watts.
service
what
Service packages are ultimately about peace of mind, but
they make great financial sense too. In harnessing the
expertise of Martin’s technicians you ensure that your light
fixtures will be operating at the optimum performance while
greatly extending their life expectancy. No other lighting
company offers you such an extensive package of service
and support, and when it’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
you know we’re working your hours.
