From the NCCIA Board of Directors

CONGRATS TO OUR SPLENDID HOMEOWNERS

Once again, Board member Suzie Bredlau ran out of adjectives when

describing all the awesome yards she saw in August when she was out

judging for Yard of the Season. August is admittedly a tough month to

keep landscaping looking nice, but these homeowners succeeded in

spades. And once again, Bredlau was complaining that she could give

out 100 prizes. Alas…

The Yard of the Month winners are:

• 20114 Deverau Ct.

• 1135 Shillington

• 619 Whitehurst Ct.

• 20618 Laverton

• 1027 Dominion

She says thanks to everyone for the hard work and “let the games begin”

for the next contest. You just never know when Bredlau will be knocking

on your door!

Please bring cats in at night

We have seen a ton of “missing cat” signs around our neighborhood

lately, therefore, we would like to remind everyone that we DO have

coyotes in our area frequently and it isn’t safe for your cats to be out at

night. Very recently, two NC residents found a cat carcass on the bayou

that was clearly the work of coyotes. Please keep them inside for their

safety.

Please clean out your gutters

It has come to our attention that many homeowners in NC have clogged

gutters. Some have been neglected for so long that they have grass

growing in them. If your gutters are clear, it will protect your house from

water damage during heavy rains. You really only have to check them a

few times a year in order to accomplish this goal.

Please help to keep storm sewers clear

Along the same lines, it’s always a good time to think about our storm

sewers too. Please do not ever EVER sweep grass clippings, dirt or other

debris down these sewers. That absolutely contributes to flooding. Even

if you don’t live near the sewer opening, please note that any kind of

debris in front of your house will eventually make its way to the sewer

if you don’t sweep it up. Flooding has become a serious issue in Katy

and every citizen has a responsibility to do his or her part to mitigate the

issue. Please remind your yard crews about this issue as well.

If you don’t have a drainage system in your backyard, that is something

to consider as well. If you do have one, please keep the pipes clear.

Be a safe pedestrian

We have been getting reports about pedestrians in the neighborhood

either wearing dark clothing at night (or when it’s dark in the morning)

and often they are wearing ear buds so they can’t hear what is going

on around them. Please be careful when walking, as there are lots of

distracted drivers on the roads these days and pedestrians can be at

great risk if they’re not paying attention.

For drivers, please remember that daylight savings time ends November

3 rd , so kids will be walking or riding to school in the dark. Please pay

attention.

Annual meeting set for December 3 rd

The annual meeting of the NCCIA board of directors has been scheduled

for Tuesday, December 3 rd at 7 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center.

All residents are welcome to attend.

Ask the Expert—

Choosing Cremation

Sherry Ahart-Davies,

Location Manager, Katy Funeral Home

Q: I know I want to be cremated, but I’m not sure I want a

memorial service. Any advice?

A: Cremation is simply one way of preparing for remembrance and

memorialization. There is still a need for a meaningful gathering to

celebrate all you are and how much you meant to others. The service

can be as simple or elaborate as you choose and should reflect your

life and passions. A memorial can also help your loved ones begin

to accept your passing by giving the people who are close to you the

time to come together and remember your life—and the chance to

say goodbye.

If you have more questions, visit your local funeral provider.

They are a good source of information for funeral, cremation

and cemetery options.

Sherry Ahart-Davies is the Location Manager at Katy Funeral Home, a member of

the Dignity Memorial ® network serving the Greater Houston community and families

nationwide. Originally from St. Louis, Sherry resides in Nottingham and is an active

member of the Katy Chamber of Commerce. She became a licensed Funeral Director in

1994 and has more than 25 years of experience providing families with compassionate

IMPORTANT DATES

November 25th-29th: Thanksgiving Break

KATY ISD LAUNCHES NEW ANONYMOUS

REPORTING MOBILE APPLICATION

When students are victimized or have knowledge of safety issues, fear

or confusion may discourage them from telling school personnel or

a police officer. The Katy Independent School District is encouraging

students, parents and community members to anonymously report tips

or information about potential safety threats through the District’s new

SpeakUP reporting mobile application. This new app is one of many

ways the District is fostering engagement and developing customized

resources that adapt to the needs of a growing school district with

changing demographics.

The SpeakUP mobile device app was developed for the Katy ISD school

community to anonymously submit safety and well-being tips to help

prevent campus related incidents that could cause harm to others. Tips

can be on bullying, weapons, self-harm, illicit drug use, inappropriate

relationships, violence or a number of other concerns.

Last year, Katy ISD successfully debuted a Bullying Tip Line submission

process that was featured on the Katy OnTheGo app. Prior to the school

year ending, the Tip Line had been accessed over 130,000 times. During

this past summer, the District designed and developed the SpeakUP

app to offer a wider range of reporting capabilities, including over 40

different safety related categories. The improved reporting app even

allows students to attach a video or photo evidence that supports the tip

as well as receive updates on their submission.

All tips are thoroughly investigated by campus personnel, police and/

or a crisis management team. Katy ISD believes that the app will be an

excellent additional tool to help support the emotional well-being of

students and provide safe learning environments for all.

KATY ISD CHANGES GRADING POLICY

Katy Independent School District Trustees approved changes to the

Academic Achievement Class Ranking and District grading policy. The

updated policy removes the “D” letter grade from the alphabetical

identification grades. The update also addresses changes to the class

ranking practice. Students who began the 2019-20 school year as juniors,

sophomores or freshmen will also see a modification to the class rank

reporting practice that is a part of that grading policy. While eleventh

grade students in the top 10% will continue to receive a class rank in

the spring semester of their junior year, all other students will receive a

quartile rank during that same time. This will have no adverse effect on

students below the top 10%. This year’s graduating seniors will adhere

to the previous class rank reporting practice in which a ranking will be

issued for every member of the class of 2020.

6

Quartile ranking is consistent with the majority of Texas state public

college admission policies. Katy ISD campuses will be reviewing the

updated policy with students in the coming weeks to help inform

students and families of the recent changes.

KATY ISD OFFERS COMMUNITY

EDUCATION CLASSES FOR ADULTS

Have you ever wanted to learn how to design a cake, play the guitar

or maybe even how to dance the salsa? The Katy Independent School

District Community Education classes are now in session and are aimed

at providing opportunities to build expertise, learn a different skill or

enjoy a new activity. With a variety of topics and options, the Community

Education courses at Katy ISD provides the general public with learning

opportunities that include self-improvement, enrichment, recreation,

academic courses and best of all an opportunity to make new friends.

Classes take place at various Katy ISD high schools during evening hours

and interested individuals can view course availability through the

District’s online course catalog.

Registration is available online. Everyone is invited to register for classes,

even if you live outside of the Katy ISD district. Certificates of completion

are issued for most classes. For questions, call the Community Education

department at 281-396-6365.

2019-2020 INSPIRING IMAGINATION TEACHER

GRANT RECIPIENTS HONORED BY KATY ISD BOARD

OF TRUSTEES

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees recently honored the more than 350 Katy

ISD teacher recipients of the Katy ISD Education Foundation’s Inspiring

Imagination teacher grant program. Grants for the 2019-2020 school

year were awarded to teachers at forty-two Katy ISD campuses. Grant

activities range from weather station tools to 3D printers, drums to

virtual reality goggles – all inspired by teacher creativity and expertise.

This year’s grant award brings the foundation’s seven-year total to

$1.6 million presented to 1,227 classroom teachers impacting 163,709

students. Pictured are this year’s teacher grant celebrants with Katy ISD

Board of Trustees and Katy ISD Education Foundation Board officers.

About the Katy ISD Education Foundation - The Katy ISD Education

Foundation unites people and companies with big hearts and a big belief

in Katy ISD teachers and students to provide unprecedented opportunities

for both. To join us in helping extraordinary teachers create extraordinary

classroom experiences visit www.katyisdeducationfoundation.org.
