Three Cranberry Relish
You could make this on National Cranberry Relish Day November 22nd!
1 pound cranberries
1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen cranberry juice concentrate
1 1/2 cups sweetened-dried cranberries

Combine all ingredients in a 3-quart saucepan and cook over medium
heat until cranberries pop. Serve warm or cold. As it the relish sits it
Gardening Tips For November
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low
areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf.
It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to
eliminate those low spots.
• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow
on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.
• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.
• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.
• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now
will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and
allow to mellow.
• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles;
they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens.
• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant.
• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

BEAT THE HOLIDAY WEIGHT
Mashed potatoes, homemade apple pie, stuffing, hot dinner rolls with
melted butter, creamed corn, green bean casserole, salad with all the
fixins’ and of course the main dish - the BIRD. All of this equals at least
2,000+ calories. What is a holiday food enthusiast to do? Yes, you CAN
avoid the holiday weight gain! Here’s how:
• Drink H2O before you eat: chances are, you are thirsty before any and
every meal; drink a full glass of water to quench your thirst first, then
notice you will feel fuller.
• Rainbow plate: make sure your plate has color - fresh/not creamed
items, broiled or grilled vegetables, protein, carbohydrate and again,
• On the side: those side dishes - mashed potatoes, casseroles, stuffing,
dressing, etc. are SIDES not main dishes; make sure to keep these
• NO to salad dressing: hooray there is a salad! BUT - that tasty dressing
(ranch, thousand island, French, Russian, balsamic vinaigrette, etc.) will
reverse the purpose of the ruffage; instead, make your own dressing at
home and bring it with you or simply ask for olive oil, salt & pepper and
maybe a hint of lemon.
• Walk it off: finished eating? Go for a WALK; football can wait (yes, even
the college games), because your body deserves better.

KATY ISD LAUNCHES NEW ANONYMOUS
REPORTING MOBILE APPLICATION
When students are victimized or have knowledge of safety issues, fear
or confusion may discourage them from telling school personnel or
a police officer. The Katy Independent School District is encouraging
students, parents and community members to anonymously report tips
or information about potential safety threats through the District’s new
SpeakUP reporting mobile application. This new app is one of many
ways the District is fostering engagement and developing customized
resources that adapt to the needs of a growing school district with
The SpeakUP mobile device app was developed for the Katy ISD school
community to anonymously submit safety and well-being tips to help
prevent campus related incidents that could cause harm to others. Tips
can be on bullying, weapons, self-harm, illicit drug use, inappropriate
relationships, violence or a number of other concerns.
Last year, Katy ISD successfully debuted a Bullying Tip Line submission
process that was featured on the Katy OnTheGo app. Prior to the school
year ending, the Tip Line had been accessed over 130,000 times. During
this past summer, the District designed and developed the SpeakUP
app to offer a wider range of reporting capabilities, including over 40
different safety related categories. The improved reporting app even
allows students to attach a video or photo evidence that supports the tip
as well as receive updates on their submission.
All tips are thoroughly investigated by campus personnel, police and/
or a crisis management team. Katy ISD believes that the app will be an
excellent additional tool to help support the emotional well-being of
students and provide safe learning environments for all.
KATY ISD CHANGES GRADING POLICY
Katy Independent School District Trustees approved changes to the
Academic Achievement Class Ranking and District grading policy. The
updated policy removes the “D” letter grade from the alphabetical
identification grades. The update also addresses changes to the class
ranking practice. Students who began the 2019-20 school year as juniors,
sophomores or freshmen will also see a modification to the class rank
reporting practice that is a part of that grading policy. While eleventh
grade students in the top 10% will continue to receive a class rank in
the spring semester of their junior year, all other students will receive a
quartile rank during that same time. This will have no adverse effect on
students below the top 10%. This year’s graduating seniors will adhere
to the previous class rank reporting practice in which a ranking will be
issued for every member of the class of 2020.
Quartile ranking is consistent with the majority of Texas state public
college admission policies. Katy ISD campuses will be reviewing the
updated policy with students in the coming weeks to help inform
students and families of the recent changes.
KATY ISD OFFERS COMMUNITY
EDUCATION CLASSES FOR ADULTS
Have you ever wanted to learn how to design a cake, play the guitar
or maybe even how to dance the salsa? The Katy Independent School
District Community Education classes are now in session and are aimed
at providing opportunities to build expertise, learn a different skill or
enjoy a new activity. With a variety of topics and options, the Community
Education courses at Katy ISD provides the general public with learning
opportunities that include self-improvement, enrichment, recreation,
academic courses and best of all an opportunity to make new friends.
Classes take place at various Katy ISD high schools during evening hours
and interested individuals can view course availability through the
District’s online course catalog.
Registration is available online. Everyone is invited to register for classes,
even if you live outside of the Katy ISD district. Certificates of completion
are issued for most classes. For questions, call the Community Education
department at 281-396-6365.
2019-2020 INSPIRING IMAGINATION TEACHER
GRANT RECIPIENTS HONORED BY KATY ISD BOARD
