dinner rolls with melted butter, creamed corn, green bean

casserole, salad with all the fixins’ and of course the main

dish - the BIRD. All of this equals at least 2,000+ calories.

What is a holiday food enthusiast to do? Yes, you CAN avoid

the holiday weight gain! Here’s how:

• Drink H2O before you eat: chances are, you are thirsty

before any and every meal; drink a full glass of water to

quench your thirst first, then notice you will feel fuller.

• Rainbow plate: make sure your plate has color - fresh/

not creamed items, broiled or grilled vegetables, protein,

carbohydrate and again, water.

• On the side: those side dishes - mashed potatoes,

casseroles, stuffing, dressing, etc. are SIDES not main

dishes; make sure to keep these portions small.

• NO to salad dressing: hooray there is a salad! BUT - that

tasty dressing (ranch, thousand island, French, Russian,

balsamic vinaigrette, etc.) will reverse the purpose of the

ruffage; instead, make your own dressing at home and

bring it with you or simply ask for olive oil, salt & pepper

and maybe a hint of lemon.

• Walk it off: finished eating? Go for a WALK; football can

wait (yes, even the college games), because your body

deserves better.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING,

AFTER THANKSGIVING DINNER

The most wonderful time of year also means less time

for you! Keep your focus on YOU before, during and after

holiday eating:

1) BEFORE: during the day, drink plenty of water, eat

hydrating fruits - melons, apples, take a long walk, eat a

whole-grain breakfast

2) DURING: continue to hydrate, make sure your plate has

MORE vegetables, avoid white grains and choose whole

grains, gravy on the side, fresh baked potatoes vs. mashed,

WATER!

3) AFTER: continue to hydrate, stay active, go for a walk,

have a small piece of dessert - key is small!

NUTRITION SERVICES UTILIZE

HS GREENHOUSES FOR GARDEN-FRESH PRODUCE

The CFISD nutrition services department is responsible for feeding

approximately 80,000 students every day and with that responsibility comes

a continual demand for large quantities of food. In an effort to enhance the

supply of fresh produce, the nutrition services team devised a plan to source

it locally via high school greenhouses.

The team brought the plan to district partners Slow Food USA and the Whole

Kids Foundation, who noted that CFISD serves a large amount of romaine

lettuce in its cafeterias. Their recommendation was for the district to grow

its own lettuce using a hydroponic system-a soilless growing method using

a specific combination of nutrients to help plants grow only using water.

Knowing that the Cypress Woods High School greenhouse had available

space and the proper equipment, Emmy Durand, coordinator of nutrition

education, put the plan into action. She contacted Kyle Atkins, Cypress

Woods agriculture science teacher, about preparing the greenhouse for a

hydroponic test grow.

Growing produce using hydroponics is different than growing produce

in soil. First, seeds are planted in water-absorbent “plugs” that then go

into a nursery until the seeds germinate. After germination, the plugs are

moved into the greenhouse where they are placed in gutters that constantly

have water running underneath them. The water, which contains nutrients

conductive to plant growth, allows the produce to grow to full size in the

gutters. After a year of growing romaine lettuce at Cypress Woods, Durand

and her team expanded the program to Cypress Springs High School to help

utilize their greenhouse. In addition to growing romaine lettuce, Cypress

Woods and Cypress Springs will grow other leafy greens, including basil

and butter lettuce during the 2019-2020 school year. All produce grown

in the greenhouses will be taken to the CFISD food production center to

be washed and then returned to school cafeterias in place of traditionally

grown lettuce. For more information about CFISD nutrition services, visit

its page on the CFISD website.

NAC PROGRAM WINS PRESTIGIOUS GOLDIN

FOUNDATION AWARD

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was recently selected as a recipient for the Goldin

Foundation for Excellence in Education Exemplary Projects Award,

which recognizes and rewards individuals or teams of educators who have

made notable contributions in their respective classrooms, schools and

communities. The district was honored for its New Arrival Center (NAC)

program, a one-year innovative approach for students who have been in a

U.S. school for six months or less and who speak limited to no English. The

NAC program, which currently serves 404 students in 13 CFISD schools,

is designed to motivate participating students and advance the acquisition

of the English language through the accelerated learning model. Harriet

Goldin, the foundation’s president, visited CFISD on March 19 th to see the

November 2019 | Copper Lakes

NAC program in action at multiple levels. She conducted site visits at Cy-

Fair High School, Arnold Middle School and Lieder Elementary School,

completing the district’s submission process that included a written entry and

conference call. While the goal of the program is to increase each student’s

language proficiency by one level, results have indicated that approximately

50 percent of students increase two or more language proficiency levels after

participating in the NAC program for one year. Additionally, the high school

completion rate for NAC alumni greatly exceeds the 60-percent statewide

rate for students from comparable backgrounds. The NAC program serves

as a model sought out by districts nationwide and has been featured on

the local news station, Univisión, as well as the Houston Chronicle and

Community Impact newspapers. In addition, the program and other award

recipients were shared on the foundation’s website so other schools and

organizations have the opportunity to replicate the notable initiatives.

22 CFISD NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS

A total of 22 CFISD seniors representing nine high schools were confirmed

as semifinalists in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program,

officials announced on September 11 th , giving the talented students an

opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,600 National

Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million to be offered next spring.

The following students have been National Merit semifinalists:

Bridgeland: Joshua Fang

Cy-Fair: Thanh-Nhu Bui, Evelyn Pan, Roshan Rajan

Cypress Creek: Hasan Abbasi

Cypress Falls: Jacob Siboyeh

Cypress Ridge: Neel Narayan

Cypress Ranch: Donald McAfoose, Michael Zhou

Cypress Woods: Govind Chada, Sritha Cheemerla, Steven Cheng, David

Chu, Walker Drury, Allison Hinaman, Brian Janger, Alexandra Pugh,

Mariam William, Angela Zhong

Jersey Village: Jane Nguyen

Langham Creek: Alia Nathani, Chloe Tang

The 22 semifinalists are among the 16,000 throughout the U.S. selected

by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They placed

among the 1 percent of about 1.5 million students who entered the Merit

Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit School Qualifying

Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their junior year. To be considered for a merit

scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance

to the finalist level of competition, which include a detailed application,

essay and endorsement by a high school official. More than 90 percent

of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, with roughly half

winning a National Merit Scholarship. Qualifying students will be notified

of their final designations in February, with National Merit Scholarship

winners announced beginning in April and concluding in July.

PEER ASSISTANCE LEADERSHIP (PALS) COURSES

Hundreds of CFISD students spent September 30 th at the Berry Center

for annual training in Peer Assistance Leadership (PALs) courses. More

than 600 students attended the required training, which included breakout

sessions with CFISD’s guidance and counseling, psychological services and

community programs departments, networked with other students from all

12 high schools and heard talks from former Cypress Springs High School

PALs adviser Hal Bowman and recording artist Austin Lanier. Students also

participated in multiple team building activities.

PALs courses are available for juniors and seniors who qualify through

an application process. Like the name states, PALs are student mentors

to elementary and middle school students, with duties determined by the

needs of each campus. Some duties include serving as tutors, playing

games, working on social and speaking skills, helping boost self-esteem

and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

PALs began in 1980 as a “peer-helping” program, growing from an informal

extracurricular activity within a school district into a structured, curriculumbased

program adopted as an accredited elective course.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA -

COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found

in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant

in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting

helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership

skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities

that allow them to:

• Try new things. • Provide service to others.

• Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as

individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility

and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,

peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting

through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which

help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam

Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout

Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old)

and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically

meet weekly.

Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools

including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley,

Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan,

Tipps, Walker and Wilson.

Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church,

BOY SCOUT TROOP 609

Boy Scout Troop 609 is a specialized for Boys with high functioning

Autism Spectrum Disorders. They meet at the Westview School on the 1 st

and 3 rd Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 838

Troop 838 is a small pack located near Hwy 6 and West Road at the

Crossbridges Church. We are between the Copperfield and Aberdeen

neighborhoods. Being a smaller troop allows us to be flexible and address

the needs of our scouts more nimbly. We currently have boys from ages 11

to 17 within our group working to make Eagle. We try to camp monthly,

with a wide variety of locations on our agenda. The different locations are

chosen by the senior boys to more directly meet our training needs and

to keep expenses low. In fact, we have some of the lowest expenses in the

area. Our adult leaders are all experienced with years of scouting under

their belt per individual. We also work closely with several local packs of

cub scouts and participate in civic duties around the area as well. Please

contact us at TROOP838CYPRESS.ORG or 414-331-3321.

TROOP 1865

Troop 1865 runs a diverse program of outdoor and service activities,

with events selected by the scouts themselves. We meet Mondays at 6:30

PM, at the Copperfield HOA building on Willow River and Hwy 6, behind

Labay. We’ve gone backpacking through the National Forest, rappelling

off Enchanted Rock, Survival camping, boating, canoeing and anything

else the scouts can dream up. We do high-adventure camping at

Philmont and Seabase. Our advancement program has enabled scout to

achieve the coveted rank of Eagle Scout at 10 times the national average

rate. We see scouting as a practice run on adult life. Scouts learn about

leadership and teamwork through having to work together in the field.

We learn about responsibility through fund-raising activities that have

allowed the entire troop to pay for their own summer camp each year.

CUB SCOUT PACK 2

We are an active year round pack for Kindergarten-5 th grade that focuses on life

skills, teamwork, leadership and FUN! Cub Scout activities include camping,

fishing, pinewood derby, hiking and much more! During the school year we meet

on the 3 rd Monday of each month at 7 PM at Birkes Elementary in the cafeteria.

Contact me for more information and to find out what exciting activities we have

planned for summer! Ame Lane-281-740-5020, ame.lane@yahoo.com.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 61

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop

61 at 7 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks

Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience

of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the

Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has

done during meetings and activities. Scouting activities include camping,

fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival,

community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting

and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to

High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer. Meet 7 to

8 PM every Wednesday in the Activity Room at Peace Community Church.

Gardening Tips For November

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low

areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf.

It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to

eliminate those low spots.

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow

on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.

• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.

• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now

will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and

allow to mellow.

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.

• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles;

they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens.

• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant.

• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
