STYLE | wellbeing 83 I n today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected society, there’s an undeniable increase in the number of people experiencing varying degrees of anxiety. With increasing accessibility to ever more variable stimuli, anxiety has become so commonplace that almost everyone will come up against it in some way or another in their lifetime. Anxiety is a form of secondary or tertiary fear. Fear is the assumption that you are about to experience, in the near or far future, through your senses or imagination: more pain than pleasure; more negative than positive; more disadvantage than advantage; or more challenge than support from someone, some event, or something. Anxiety arises because of secondary, tertiary, or quaternary associations being made with a primary, previously occurring experience that was perceived to be more painful than pleasureful and more negative than positive. All of these imbalanced perceptions become stored in your subconscious mind and can be activated by any secondary perceptual associations that are encountered. Anxiety can be triggered when any new perceptual associations similar to the original painful memory of the previously stored event arises. Any imbalanced and painful perception of the past can initiate a fear of it, or something secondarily associated with it reoccurring in the future.
