THE MESSAGE FOR AW19 IS ‘GO BIG OR GO HOME’ AS OUTERWEAR

HAS ITS MOMENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT, SAYS AMY NORBURY

AH. The nights are drawing in and temperatures

are dropping, which signals it’s time for the highlight

of every fashionista’s shopping calendar - that allimportant

winter coat.

The silver lining to the end of summer is the

prospect of snuggling up in one of the season’s

cosiest outerwear numbers, and for AW19 its a case

of the bigger, the better. From sleek longline trenches

- as pioneered by Burberry - to those uber-cosy teddy

coats as seen on the runways at Max Mara, there’s a

winter wardrobe addition out there for everyone.

Last year’s statement coats embraced an array of

paintbox brights, but understated chic is the name

of the colour game for 2019. We’re talking classic

camel, sophisticated olive tones and even pale cream

and snowy white for the ultimate in oh-so-chic

elegance.

While the colours are muted, the drama comes

from the sheer size - it’s time to go big or go home.

Whether it’s tapping into the Eighties trend with

power shoulders to do the talking, opting to go long

with a floor-sweeping maxi style or cosying up in the

softest, cuddliest teddy bear coat you can find, an

oversized element is a must this season.

If you’re looking to add a touch of pattern to your

new outerwear, you can’t go wrong with checks. This

season’s heritage game is strong, and while there’s

always room for a timeless checked number in your

winter coat arsenal, once again you can go oversized

to give your purchase an on-trend twist.

Animal prints are also inescapable on the high street

this autumn, and coats are no different. Leopard,

zebra, snakeskin - nothing is off the table if you want

your outerwear to shout loud and proud.

A firm favourite on the catwalks last year, the cape

is once again having a style moment - think a little

bit Handmaid’s Tale, a little bit superhero. Celine’s

swashbuckling number was a runway hit, while Max

Mara’s camel number paired with over-the-knee

boots for added sex appeal.

The key word for AW19’s outerwear is ‘diversity’ -

but with so many stylish choices on the table, you

may find yourself wishing for extreme cold weather

so you can pile them all on at once.
