Upstairs
Downstairs
A world of interiors.
The beautiful Old School Rooms on Sherborne’s
Long Street provides the perfect backdrop for
a world of interiors, created by designer Kitty
Oakshott. Kitty has been working in interior design,
both in London and in Dorset, for more than twenty
years and opened Upstairs Downstairs in 2012.
These days, it’s the essential destination for anyone
with a design project in mind.
Here at Upstairs Downstairs no job is too big or
too small. Kitty and her team will happily advise
and guide you through any interior decisions from
a single cushion to a whole house or hotel. We are
available to talk you through ideas at our shop or by
appointment to visit your home or business.
Upstairs, you’ll find a fabric showroom that’s all
about finding your perfect match, thanks to a
collection of more than 400 fabric and wallpaper
books. Stocking all the designer brands as well as
smaller, less well-known independent designers to
give you the widest possible choice. Once you’ve
chosen your fabric, Kitty and her team of expert
seamstresses and upholsterers will be more
than happy to discuss producing curtains, blinds,
headboards and all kinds of upholstery for your
home or business.
Downstairs spend a while browsing the selection
of beautiful home-ware, furniture, fascinating gifts,
jewellery and the other unique treasures of this
fabulous emporium.
Curtains – We can make bespoke curtains and
pelmets in one of the many fabrics stocked in the
shop, or in fabric supplied by the customer. As
standard all our curtains are hand sewn and fully
lined, but there are many other options such as
thermal or blackout lining, with a choice of headings
– all made to measure to suit your requirements.
Blinds – We have a choice of Roman, Roller, Vertical,
contemporary look. Roller blinds can be made in
your choice of fabric, with blackout and wipe clean
options also available. Blinds can also be made to
measure and supplied via mail order for you to fit
yourself.
Tracks and Poles – We have a wonderful collection
of poles with lots of options available, choose from
wood or metal, with hundreds of different finishes
Me, Moo Selfie, and I
Introducing Lucy’s Farm
Dorset based artist Lucy Tidbury, known mostly for her
‘moo selfie’ designs, creates original artwork, prints
and gifts inspired by our beautiful countryside and its
curious four-legged residents.
“Living near Wareham surrounded by stunning
scenery of the Purbeck Isles in Dorset, I have no end
of inspiration. I studied a Diploma in Fine Art at the
Bournemouth Arts Institute and I went on to do my
BA Degree in Fine Art at the University of Chichester,
graduating in 2007. I took the leap to become a full-time
artist back in 2014 and haven’t looked back!
I show my work at various shows across the country and
I am always adding new items and designs to the range.
The Moo Selfie range is my most popular, combining
our beautiful landscape with its curious four-legged
residents, you’ll often see me walking the Purbeck Hills
with my Sprocker Spaniel Ned for inspiration! He’s
a rescue from Margaret Green Animal rescue and is
regularly by my side at the shop and at shows. “
In 2017 Lucy opened her shop ‘Lucy’s Farm’ in the centre
of Swanage which is also used as a studio space
where Lucy works on her current commissions and
latest paintings. As well as the humorous farm animal
paintings Lucy is well established as a Pet Portrait
artist, capturing animals in original oil paintings, Lucy
has painted an array of pets over the years from dogs,
cats and horses to guinea pigs, alpacas and rabbits.
You can view Lucy’s work and see what she’s working on
by visiting her shop in Swanage and you can also head to
the website to see the full range and find out more about
Lucy and the Moos.
Lucy’s Farm is tucked away in the heart of Swanage,
opposite Java Café and not far from the famous
Chococo chocolate shop, you’ll find it in Tilly Mead
Courtyard where there’s a real wealth of independent,
creative, small businesses, from traditional fishmongers
and florists to funky Cafés, restaurants and galleries.
Damers
Eco Crew:
No Plastic,
Fantastic!
Eco Schools is at the heart of the life of the 450 pupils
at Damers First School. Every class has an Eco ambassador
who forms the Eco Crew. Sustainability is embedded
across our curriculum through planned activities. Each
class makes a termly pledge to help animals, people or
the environment giving every child the opportunity to
have a voice and speak passionately about environmental
issues they believe in. Katie White, Eco assessor
said, “The School has clearly demonstrated commitment
to Eco Schools. It was great to see this was led by the
pupils and they were really heading it up, with a strong
ability to speak for themselves, debate and question
difficult subjects.”
All children at the school garden which is really important
for health and environmental education. They work
with volunteers in the school garden growing seeds in
our plastic bottle greenhouse, planting seedlings out
and harvesting what they have grown to be cooked into
a dish related to a country or part of the Big Soup. The
local garden centre provided resources and time and in
September 2018 Damers came second in the Cultivation
Street School Garden Competition. All the school’s food
waste is put in our Ridan Food Waste Composter.
The children have been active in getting the local community
to recycle - printing cartridges, pens, biscuit
wrappers, crisp packets, soap dispensers, baby pouches,
pet food etc. This helps the environment and we raised
£2,000 so far with the money going towards a bird hide
and wildlife area with pond.
The school became an SAS Plastic Free School in May
2018. Children launched Refill Poundbury signing up 23
businesses and appeared on Newsround. They contacted
businesses supplying school fruit and milk asking if fruit
could come in card boxes and milk in reusable glass bottles.
They wrote to local head teachers asking them to
become plastic free schools. They put pressure on Brace
of Butchers about plastic used and this business implemented
their ideas, establishing a waste free shop. They
created posters giving the local community ideas on how
they could reduce plastic.
Most importantly, the children led a campaign to help
Dorchester achieve SAS Plastic Free Community Status.
They have given presentations to many community
organisations across the town and gained their support
including Dorchester Chamber of Business, Dorchester
Bid, the Town Council. The children have signed up 84
11
businesses and each of these businesses have removed
at least 3 single use plastics or found sustainable alternatives.
In July Dorchester became the 67th location
and 3rd location in Dorset to achieve this status. The
children have since set up a steering group with influential
members of the town to help them carry on their
great Plastic Free work making Dorchester as green as
possible. They have been invited onto Dorset Council’s
climate change panel as the Council realises the power
of the children’s message and the influence they have
had across the town and the county. The children won
four awards at the Young Enterprise Fiver Challenge
with their product Waxtastic No Plastic, an alternative to
cling film. They sold the product at local events raising
an amazing £4500 which has helped finance a school
nature area. Their resilience is amazing.
The school are ambassadors for Delphis Eco, an ecological
cleaning product we have used across the school
for the last 4 years. The packaging is made from 100%
recycled plastic bottles and they were the first company
to do this in 2017. The children sell delphis eco products
to parents, staff and businesses after school and
at weekends at Farmers Markets. The product has just
been launched in Robert Dyas Stores across the country.
It has the Royal Warrants for the Queen and Prince
Charles. Our school cleaner Debbie Grubb features on
one of the bottles as part of a quote she said.
Damers First School children with help from their teacher
Edd Moore came up with the idea of Boomerang Bag
Dorset to help reduce the amount of single use plastic
bags being used. The children have inspired the local

community and community groups to donate fabric and
make fabric bags. Making bag events have been set up
around the town. Businesses and the WI have help to
support the children’s idea. The Boomerang Bags go into
independent shops for members of the public to use for
free if they forget their own bag. They then bring the
bag back when they are next in town with their reusable
one. The scheme was launched by HRH Prince Charles in
May.
A Year 3 class, as a pledge, took part in a CPRE (Campaign
to Protect Rural England) Green Clean with students
from Thomas Hardye School. They collected 156
plastic bottles and cans raising £15.60 using the reverse
vending machine. Damers’ children inspired Hardyes to
use recycle bins and set up a green committee. A few
weeks ago the children and The Thomas Hardye Students
took part in the Green Clean, litter picking the
same route as last year. They collected 59 plastic bottles
and cans which was considerably less than last year
which shows that work is being down to clean up the
area. Earlier in the year the children went to Westminster
to speak with Michael Gove about the importance of
an all in Deposit Return Scheme. They didn’t take no for
an answer and were filmed by Newsround while questioning
him which stimulated national interest. In March
the school was awarded the Jane Goodall Roots and
Shoots best Educational Institution for the plastic free
campaigns they have led.
The school has been included in “Plastic Game Charger”,
a book written by Amanda Keetley of Less Plastic,
which showcases the work the children have done at
school and in the local community to reduce single
use plastic. The children hope that it will inspire other
schools and community groups to use their ideas to
start their own plastic free campaign in their villages,
towns and cities.
Isla Lester aged 8 has been short-listed for Best Youth
Volunteer at the Dorset Volunteer Centre Awards with
winners to be announced at the end of October. She
asked for a litter picker for Christmas and has since
litter picked her street, local beaches, countryside and
even asked to litter pick the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth.
She gives up her weekends and after school
to speak to businesses and community groups about
reducing single use plastic. She now has a Blue Peter
Green Badge! Damers Eco Crew have been short-listed
for Best Youth Volunteer Group.
Damers First School have been short-listed for Schools
Champion in the Surfers Against Sewage Awards. The
Ceremony will take place on Thursday 21st November
at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. The awards were
short-listed by an all star judging panel that included
Ben Fogle, Helen Glover, Liz Bonnin and Hugo Taholm.
Spotlight on: Sculpture by the Lakes
Nature, art and soul unite at Tincleton, Dorchester
Set in 26 acres of Dorset’s finest countryside, Sculpture
by the Lakes is the go-to venue for art, gardens and
peaceful days out. Over the past few months, this iconic
sculpture park has added even more to its offering.
Home to leading contemporary sculptor Simon Gudgeon
and his gardening wife Monique, Sculpture by the
Lakes has been described as one of the most beautiful
and unique sculpture venues in the UK. Set alongside
Dorset’s River Frome, with three lakes, wildlife ponds,
streams, meandering woodland paths and more formal
gardens, it is the perfect place to spend the day, to
experience art and landscape and not merely to view it,
and to recharge mind, body and soul.
Not just a sculpture park
Sculpture by the Lakes is as much a destination for art
connoisseurs as for garden enthusiasts, nature lovers
and foodies. Visitors can experience a day visiting
The Barn Gallery, one of three gallery spaces on site;
enjoying home-cooked food at The Gallery Café; and
walking around the park itself taking in the beautiful,
tranquil surroundings. There are also private areas
available to hire for the day, such as The Riverkeeper’s
Hut, a beautiful shepherd’s hut situated on the river’s
edge, or The Island, a private, enclosed pavilion with soft
seating, picnic table and wood-burning stove.
The art
Simon Gudgeon has attained worldwide recognition with
exhibitions across the globe. His work features in several
important private collections such as those of HRH The
Duke of Edinburgh, TRH The Prince of Wales and The
Duchess of Cornwall, and TRH The Duke and Duchess
of Cambridge. Simon’s sculptures also feature in public
spaces such as Woburn Abbey, Hyde Park, Kew Gardens
and the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole,
Wyoming, USA.
As a venue for both international and UK-based artists,
Sculpture by the Lakes boasts three gallery spaces; The
Gallery Café, Studio One and the newly-opened Barn
Gallery, making it the largest art location in Dorset.
Featuring smaller works by Simon, The Barn Gallery
also showcases work by local artists including Jason
Anderson, Julie Brunn, Julie Ann Scott and Laura Rich,
alongside USA-based artists such as Andrew Denman,
Guy Combes, Dennis Boyd and September Vhay. A rolling
series of group and one-man shows is held throughout
the year, plus regular residencies and demonstrations by
guest artists.
The experience
Under the banner of Mind, Body and Soul, the sculpture
park is now home to a range of well-being courses and
13

workshops including a weekly meditation group, regular
yoga retreats plus shiatsu healing, makko-ho and
qigong sessions. Added to this is a burgeoning Winter
Art School to tempt you into taking on a new challenge
or brushing up neglected creative skills. Highly
talented lecturers and tutors from around the globe
offer courses on a huge range of disciplines from oil
portraiture to tassel making, stone carving to jewellery
making, furniture painting to needle felting, plus a
choice of drawing and painting techniques. The team
has also devised a practical range of garden and outdoor
workshops; rose and fruit tree pruning, propagating and
wildlife gardening are just a selection of those available.
The food
The fully licensed Gallery Café serves delicious
home-made food all day, offering vegan and glutenfree
options across the menu. From tea, coffee and a
selection of home-cooked cakes to light bites, quick
snacks and three-course lunches complimented by a
well-chosen wine list, local beers, ciders and soft drinks
for drivers, everyone is catered for. Visitors still hungry
after a post-lunch walk around the park can even finish
their day with a traditional cream tea. The quarter-acre
Kitchen Garden is open for visitors to wander through
and supplies The Gallery Café with fresh produce daily,
whilst the flock of free-range hens ensures a steady
supply of eggs for the kitchen.
The venues
Recently licensed as a wedding venue, Sculpture by the
Lakes is a truly unique place to celebrate, whether it be
a marriage ceremony or special birthday. The Retreat
overlooks the River Frome and can accommodate up
to 60 people seated or 100 for a standing reception.
Smaller venues such as The Riverkeeper’s Hut, The
Island or The Pavilion are perfect for smaller, more
intimate groups of four, six or eight people respectively
and include a personally delivered picnic made freshly
by The Gallery Café team - an ideal way to enjoy the
sculpture park and spoil family and friends.
Entry to the sculpture park is £10 per person and entry
to the Gallery Café, Studio One and The Barn Gallery
is free. Sculpture by the Lakes is open 10am-5pm
Tuesday to Saturday from October to the end of March
and Wednesday to Sunday from April to the end of
September. No children under 14 years, and no dogs. For
details on venue hire, retreats, our Winter Art School
Spotlight on: Elaionaki
Elaionaki Extra Virgin
Olive Oil derives solely
from olives grown in our
small grove overlooking
the Gulf of Pagasitikos in
central Greece.
As a family business, we
can trace the oil from
our trees through cold
pressing and shipping to
Poundbury, where we do
the bottling and labelling.
It has a delicious, light,
fruity flavour reminiscent
of the fresh olive oil
enjoyed in local Greek
tavernas, unlike that sold
in most supermarkets.
Celebrate Good Skin
News from Sarah Dale Aesthetics
We moved to Buttermarket, Poundbury in October 2018
to establish our own Nurse led skin and laser clinic.
Sarah Dale Aesthetics (SDA) has been in business for
over 14 years, previously working from premises in
central Dorchester. Delighted by the response from our
regular customers we have welcomed on average 43
new customers each month since our move. Customers
enjoy the free accessible parking outside the clinic.
In addition, the FRAX naturally treats the lips, plumping
and improving the definition of the lip contour. In
August, we launched the Lipofirm Med. This offers a
range of treatments for the face and body with excellent
results. The body treatment includes body contouring
and fat reduction, and can help to reduce and improve
cellulite. The face treatment offers a three-way nonsurgical
facelift.
It has been a pleasure to introduce two new clinicians
to our team. Alongside them we have a knowledgeable
reception team, who are trained and able to advise
customers about skincare products from our Medik8
and Heliocare ranges. Our well established treatments
of Laser/ IPL for permanent hair removal and skin
rejuvenation, as well as Venus Freeze for lifting and
tightening, remain extremely popular. We’ve recently
invested in a FRAX laser, offering more intensive
treatments for skin resurfacing and reduction of fine
lines and wrinkles.
We offer free skin analysis with our experienced
clinicians where you can discuss the right treatments
and products for you.
