Just set your 

MIND TO IT 

At the age of 31, artist Marcia Goodchild survived a horrific car accident after which she had 

to learn to walk, talk and write again. Today, 10 years later, she is living her passion in front 

of her easel, busy painting. We visited the artist at her cosy home in Benoni. 

Marcia is a brave woman who despite her serious injuries fought 

to survive for her son, Jean, who was then a four-year-old toddler. 

She was in a coma for 28 days and spent five months in hospital 

and rehab. She suffered brain, lung, shoulder, ear, bladder and 

pelvis injuries. 

It took her 18 months to learn to 

walk again and more than a year’s 

speech therapy before she could 

speak properly. 

The rehabilitation period was long and 

painful. “I could not believe how weak I 

became. My thoughts varied from ‘I’m not 

going to survive’ to ‘I have to survive for 

Jean’. My survival mode kicked in and no 

matter how painful and exhausted I was 

after treatments and how many tears I 

shed, I was determined to give and do anything 

in my power to be the best Marcia I 

can be after the accident. My loving family 

supported me through the trying times 

and my dear mother, Christa Goodchild, was the strong one who 

encouraged me and pushed me through all the exercises when I 

was ready to give up. Through times of despair, tears and pain she 

was my pillar of strength,” Marcia recalls. 

Every day was a step closer to Marcia’s goal and today, looking 

back at what happened, she is filled with gratitude and appreciation 

for life. She met the love of her life, Wessel Rody, a couple of

years ago. In 2017 they booked their wedding at Summer Place in 

Boksburg. Unfortunately, what was to be the biggest day of her life 

had to be cancelled. 

Due to complications with a bladder injury that she suffered 

during the accident, she needs a pacemaker for her bladder to 

function normally. Unfortunately her body 

rejected the pacemaker just before the wedding. 

It was only in January this year that she 

received a pacemaker which her body did 

not reject. 

The biggest lesson she learned is that you 

can’t take anything for granted – your life 

can change within the blink of an eye. “I am 

more careful and I live in the moment. My 

relationship with God became very strong 

as I know that he carried me through,” she 

says. Marcia now appreciates all things in 

life, most of all the things that cost nothing, 

such as the beauty of a flower, birds singing, 

seeing her son grow up to be a handsome 

teenager and experiencing the love of her family. 

The woman who I had the honour of chatting to can walk again, 

her speech is back to normal and her eyes are soft with gratitude 

and love for life and her family. We are holding thumbs that wedding 

bells will soon ring for her and her fiancé.

Who taught you to paint? I have 

painted since I was a little girl. My 

father and grandfather were artists 

and I learned from them. I took art as 

a subject in school and I won many 

art competitions, but I never took 

art classes. 

What kind of themes do you like 

to paint? I love to paint flowers, 

women and faces. I like my paintings 

to be sensual and colourful. 

What is your goal with your 

paintings? I want to become a 

household name

How did your fitness 

journey unfold? 

I was always relatively body conscious 

and even suffered from anorexia 

for a period of time. So, after 

I decided to change careers from 

modelling and dancing, bodybuilding 

was a natural progression. 

When did you join Virgin Active 

as a fitness trainer? 

In 2009 after doing many personal 

training and fitness courses 

as well as delving deeply into 

sports nutrition. 

What was the most difficult challenge 

to get your body into tiptop 

condition for the IBFF World 

Championships? 

The long periods of strict dieting, 

as I compete from March 

right through until the end 

of November. 

How do you stay focused? 

One has to have a passion for this 

sport, otherwise it would be 

really tough. 

What is the key to your success? 

Dedication, dedication, dedication. 

At what age would you like to 

stop competing? 

Never! I want to live my passion 

until I die! 

How long before a competition do 

you need to go on a diet? 

At least 12 to 16 weeks. 

What are you allowed to eat? 

Skinless fish, chicken and broccoli, 

broccoli and then more broccoli. 

Basmati rice is a treat on the odd occasion, 

and loads of water. 

What is your favourite dish to 

indulge in after a competition? 

Peanut butter sandwich with coffee 

… it sounds simple but bread is a 

huge no-no, so it’s a bite of heaven. 

What do you do to relax if you are 

not in the gym? 

Spending quality time with my circle 

of close friends, enjoying a glass of 

wine. And visiting my boyfriend, Roberto 

Frassica, in Italy during off times 

is extremely relaxing and important 

to me. 

What are your guilty pleasures? 

Chocolate, for sure, and condensedmilk 

coffee. 

What are the values you live by? 

Honesty, hard work and not being 

afraid to follow my dreams.

working on her next challenge. We talk to Penny 

Wilbers, from Sunward Park, who was crowned world 

champion after winning in the over-50 category at the 

IBFF World Championships in Italy recently. 

o be crowned as the best in the world is a dream come 

true. “I’m excited, I’m thrilled and I’m proud of myself 

for my achievement, especially at my age. The fact that I 

could represent South Africa on the world stage was an 

honour and a privilege – a highlight in my life,” she says with a 

huge smile. 

Her next goal is to reach pro status next year in order to keep on 

representing South Africa in competitions overseas. She will be 

flying to Europe in October to take part in the WBFF World 

Championships in Slovenia on the 14th. 

Penny is a fitness model who has been chasing this dream since the age of 

40. She achieved second and third places in Miss Universe Miss Fitness and 

Miss Europe Miss Fitness competitions in age groups over-35 and over-40. 

She has been a resident of Boksburg for the past 40 years. 

She is divorced and has two sons, Dean, 35, and Wesley, 30. She recently 

became the proud granny of a four-month-old baby girl, Duranté. “She is 

my little princess,” says the proud granny. 

Penny realised in Grade 10 that she likes to challenge herself and her body 

to see how hard she can push it. She became a professional dancer and 

model and danced for the SABC for a number of years. 

Years ago she also owned a modelling school, Cosmic Modelling, in 

Parkrand, Boksburg.

Spring joy 

This month we are planting a new breed of impatiens that is resistant to mildew, as 

well as a verbena that blooms all the time. 

We’re planting… the new bedding impatiens ‘Beacon’ that blooms from spring to the first frost and is highly resistant to downy 

mildew. Busy Lizzies (Impatiens walleriana) used to fill shady gardens with their glorious blooms until the fungus disease wiped them 

out. We are delighted that a highly resistant variety of our favourite long-blooming plants has been bred. ‘Beacon’ does not require any 

special treatment. It does best in shade to semi-shade and requires well-composted soil and regular watering. Fertilise once a month 

with a liquid fertiliser to encourage plentiful flowers. Flower colours are bright red, orange, shades of violet, salmon, white and coral as 

well as a mix. This highly resistant impatiens is identifiable from other varieties by a colourful ‘Beacon’ label.

Best for patios… Verbena peruviana 

‘Firehouse’ is perfect for hanging baskets and 

containers because it forms a mound of flowers 

that easily fills a hanging basket or patio planter. 

What’s different about this verbena is that it 

doesn’t cycle in and out of flowers – new flowers 

open as the old ones die. The foliage is tough 

and disease resistant, too. Place in a position 

that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. 

Baskets require daily watering in summer; containers, 

every second to third day. Fertilise with a 

liquid fertiliser for flowers twice a month. Plants 

are available in eight different colours, including 

purple fizz and lavender.

Saturday and 8am to 2pm

Garden tasks for August 

• Plant out summer annuals like salvias, marigold, bedding dahlias, gazanias, alyssum, 

dianthus and mimulus. Water the plant twice a week and fertilise with a liquid 

fertiliser once a month. 

• Grow annuals from seed for a big splash of colour, such as marigolds, alyssum, cosmos, 

cornflowers and lobelia as well as scatter packs, which are ready-made mixes of 

summer annuals for sun or shade. 

• Perennials that grow easily from seed include hollyhocks, Shasta daisies, asters, 

scabious, statice, sweet William, aquilegia, Arctotis and foxgloves. 

• Cut back or tidy up summer perennials to encourage new growth. Start watering 

more regularly and fertilise with 5:1:5, 3:1:5 or 8:1:5. 

• Feed irises with superphosphate. Cannas, daylilies, coreopsis and dahlias 

can still be divided and replanted into well-composted soil. 

• Amaryllis, daylilies and Louisiana irises can be planted from early September, 

but wait until the middle of September to plant Crocosmia and dahlias. 

• Keep watering spring-flowering bulbs and Liliums. 

• Fertilise flowering shrubs with 5:1:5 or 3:1:5 and foliage shrubs with 3:2:1. 

Trim winter flowering shrubs such as poinsettia. 

• If you didn’t do so last month, scarify, aerate, fertilise and water the lawn. 

Water once a week or every two weeks and mow weekly when necessary.
