ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE - LOT 1

Colt By OASIS DREAM

Trained By Charlie Hills

Lot 1

THE HORSE

A good sized, well balanced colt by the outstanding sire, OASIS

DREAM. Charlie trained the best of OASIS DREAM’s offspring,

champion sprinter MUHAARAR, to win four consecutive Group

1s in 2015. This colt is from a very smart family that includes

CONFIDENTIAL LADY who won the French Oaks. His breeding

suggests he will be a speedy, early to mid-season two year old who

should progress again during his 3 year old season.

He was bought at Goffs Premier Yearling sale at Doncaster in late

August and given the prices at Tattersalls more recently he looks

very good value. He is Plus 10 Qualified so will earn an extra £10k in

addition to any prize money for winning a Plus 10 maiden.

ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, born in 1859, was the

creator of ‘Sherlock Holmes’.

He wrote a total of 60 books featuring the pipe

smoking 1900’s detective with his crime busting

sidekick Dr Watson. Sir Arthur himself was fully a

trained physician.

CHARLIE HILLS says, He is a very powerful colt who

moves extremely well “ and most certainly a 2 year old type.

He has been at the yard since the sale and has been lovely

to break in. I can see him being the right profile for the

valuable Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes at York in August

worth £300k, won this year by the mightily impressive

MUMS TIPPLE.

GUSTAV HOLST - LOT 2

Colt By SEA THE STARS

Trained By Richard Hannon

THE HORSE

Lot 2

A very exciting sort by the outstanding sire SEA THE STARS who

has had such an incredible amount of success with middle distance

horses such as this year’s Prince of Wales’ Stakes winner CRYSTAL

OCEAN, Oaks and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner

TAGHROODA as well as Champion Stayer and 12 time Group race

winner STRADAVARIUS. This colt came from the Goffs Orby Sale at the

beginning of last month and it’s just possible that he slipped under the

radar. He was Lot 5 and the sale was delayed due to torrential rain. At

the time he was sold the ring was much less busy than later in the day.

He is from a tremendous family, his 2nd dam produced LE HAVRE

who won the French Derby in 2009, as well as a very good horse called

ASTRONEREUS who was rated 111 and also by SEA THE STARS.

8 | Syndicates & partnerships 2020

Born in 1874 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire -

GUSTAV HOLST was a British classical musical

composer who lived most of his adult working life

in London, writing his most renowned piece of

work ‘The Planets’, from which the awe inspiring

Hymn ‘I Vow To Thee My Country’ originated from.

John Williams, writer of the music for Star Wars,

credits much of his inspiration for his many movie

soundtracks to Gustav Holst.

Richard Hannon trained HUMPHREY BOGART to for us to finish 5th

in the Derby in 2016 and we hope this colt could be a similar type. He

is Plus 10 Qualified and we would be hopeful of collecting the £10k

Bonus available for winning one of the Plus 10 Maidens at 2. He really

looks to have a touch of class about him and given the strength of the

sales at Tattersalls last month he was well bought at his price.

RICHARD HANNON says, He is a very strong, mature,

scopey colt who really “ could be anything. I would expect

him to make a mid to back end 2 year old and should

certainly improve as a 3 year old. I am very excited to

train him and for the pedigree he has he looks to have

been bought cheaply. As soon as I bought this colt I

thought that Chelsea Thoroughbreds could have another

chance of a Derby runner.

Bloodstock Agent ROSS DOYLE ” adds, This is the best value

colt we have bought in a long time “ given the current

strength of the market, being by such an outstanding

sire in SEA THE STARS. We thought he would be the type

to make his debut in the middle of his 2yo season and

improve at 3. His full brother AL MUFFRIH is a very

decent horse who is lightly raced.

RICHARD HANNON,

Collingbourne Ducis, Wiltshire

Richard has had another great season with over 150 winners up to now,

including a number of high class Group winners. The highlight was

KING OF CHANGE proving his 2nd place finish in the 2,000 Guineas

was no fluke by winning the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes so

impressively at Ascot on Champions Day. BILLESDON BROOK returned

to the scene of her 1,000 Guineas victory last year and won the Group 1

Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. THREAT and MUMS TIPPLE were also

two of Britain and Ireland’s highest rated 2 year olds this year.

The impressive setup at both Herridge and Everleigh is a very welloiled

machine with wonderful owners’ facilities and anyone visiting

their horse will always be extended a very special welcome.

SIR EDWARD ELGAR - LOT 3

Colt By NO NAY NEVER

Trained By John Gosden

Lot 3

THE HORSE

12 | Syndicates & partnerships 2020

SIR EDWARD ELGAR was the famous English

composer most renowned for writing ‘Pomp

& Circumstance Marches’ and of course ‘Land

of Hope & Glory’ - which is often referred to

as the UK’s second National Anthem. Born in

1857 in Worcester, he lived most of his adult

life in London.

This is the first horse that Champion Trainer JOHN GOSDEN has

trained for us. We are hoping it will be a long and successful

relationship starting with this horse. He is by the very exciting sire NO

NAY NEVER who has produced several very smart horses in just his

first two crops including TEN SOVEREIGNS (Middle Park Stakes and

July Cup) as well as ARIZONA (Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot). He is an

impressive looking horse already, and due to his size we hope he will

be a fast 2 year old type – an ideal horse for a Plus 10 Maiden.

JOHN GOSDEN says, He is a big, imposing colt by a top

stallion in NO NAY “ NEVER. I hope he makes his debut

during the mid part of the summer. I know the team at

Chelsea Thoroughbreds well, they do a great job and I’m

sure we’ll have a lot of fun together. This is a grand colt

who I’m looking forward to training.

Bloodstock Agent CHARLIE GORDON-WATSON adds,

“ I loved

this big, strong, powerful colt by outstanding sire NO

NAY NEVER. I know the sire well having bought TEN

SOVEREIGNS as a yearling. The mare has had 6 winners

from 6 runners and was a 2 year old winner herself.

He’s a very level type and shouldn’t grow too much and

therefore I’d expect him to be a forward 2 year old. I think

he was extremely good value given the success of the

sire.

John needs little introduction. He is a 3 time Champion Trainer in Britain

and looks set to add another Championship in 2019. He has trained over

3,000 winners in the UK and countless more around the world including

over 100 Group 1s ranging from sprinters to stayers. One could argue

that he has never had a more purple patch than now. He and Frankie

WILLIAM BLIGH - LOT 4

Colt By TERRITORIES

Trained By Ralph Beckett

THE HORSE

Lot 4

Bought at the Tattersalls Book 1 Sale, he is a very athletic son of

French 2,000 Guineas winner and first season sire TERRITORIES,

who is in turn a son of the legendary INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. This colt

looks fast and we hope he will make a nice two year old and improve

into being a better 3 year old.

We were very keen to buy a ‘value’ Book 1 horse given the success of

this year of some of the sub £100k purchases and the special terms

of the Book 1 Bonus Scheme. If he were to win a Plus 10 Maiden

next season he would earn around £40k just for that race which is a

massive incentive.

Vice-Admiral WILLIAM BLIGH was an officer of

the Royal Navy and in command of HMS Bounty

in 1789 when he was famously set adrift post an

onboard mutiny, headed by the masters mate

- Fletcher Christian. After drifting 4,160 miles

they eventually reached the island of Timor in

South East Asia alive - where some descendants

of the men can still be traced to the present day.

RALPH BECKETT says, This colt wasn’t on my agents’

list but immediately “ impressed me as I saw him for the

first time in the ring. He is a tremendous walker, stood

well and I think he was well bought in a sale where

people aren’t generally looking for 2 year old types. He is

from a family I know well, having trained his half sister,

BELLAJEU (by MONTJEU) who was very tough, sound and

genuine. The best horse out of the dam was a horse called

LAT HAWILL who was by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, making

him a 3 parts brother to this horse. His profile does

perhaps differ slightly from the kind of horses I have had

for Chelsea Thoroughbreds, however, it is one I like a lot

and I believe we have an angle with him.

RALPH BECKETT,

Kimpton, Andover

Ralph has been a very consistent trainer for Chelsea Thoroughbreds

and still holds an impressive 100% strike rate for us with winners

every year. This year SAM COOKE won impressively for us at Chester

but unfortunately picked up a season-ending injury in the process.

He remains an extremely exciting horse and one we are very much

looking forward to seeing next season.

Ralph has trained multiple Classic winners such as Oaks winners

TALENT and LOOK HERE and St Leger winner SIMPLE VERSE. Ralph

has had another good season with a Royal Ascot winner and a 4

timer at Newmarket last month. He has some very exciting horses to

look forward to next year and will be hoping for another successful

season.

NEVILE CHAMBERLAIN - LOT 5

Colt By SHALAA

Trained By Martyn Meade

THE HORSE

Lot 5

A very good looking colt purchased at the Goffs Premier Yearling

sale in August. He is by the exciting first season sire SHALAA who

was one of the outstanding 2 year olds we have seen in Europe

over the past decade. He was a dual Group 1 and Group 2 winner

at 2, winning the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes over six

furlongs. SHALAA was very well bred himself being by INVINCIBLE

SPIRIT, and so far is the highest rated 2 year old that he has

produced. The dam’s side is all about speed as well having won over

5f as a 2 year old so it is hoped that this colt will be an early type.

Martyn trained OWNEY MADDEN for us this season to win his

maiden at Newbury and then go on to win the £70k - 6f Nursery at

York’s Ebor Meeting, the richest nursery in Europe.

NEVILE CHAMBERLAIN, born in 1869, was

a Conservative Prime Minister from 1937 to

1940, and best known for his foreign policy

of appeasement, and signing of the ‘Munich

Agreement’ with Adolf Hitler, stipulating ‘peace

in our time’, which was then famously ignored

by the Nazi Dictator - leading to PM Chamberlain

overseeing the first year of WW2, after the German

invasion of Poland in 1939.

MARTYN MEADE says, A lovely looking colt out of a mare

that has produced 2 “ winners from 2 runners at a good

level, from a very good breeder. This colt certainly looks

sharp enough to perform well enough as a 2yo, but with

the scope to improve further as a 3yo.

Bloodstock Agent DERMOT FARRINGTON adds,

“ I have

been extremely impressed with SHALAA’s first crop of

yearlings and I personally think he has a good chance

of being Champion First Season Sire. This colt is a great

mover that reminded me of his sire who was one of the

best 2 year old colts we have seen in recent years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

It is our aim to make Chelsea Thoroughbreds as transparent, simple and fun as possible

and have put together this brief Q and A. Please do not hesitate to ask should you have any

further queries.

WHAT DOES CHELSEA THOROUGHBREDS DO ?

We put together and manage different named racing partnerships and syndicates, to bring

together groups of like minded people to share ownership of racehorses.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THERE IN EACH PARTNERSHIP / SYNDICATE ?

This will depend on the cost of the horse, but usually 10 people. You will find this shown on each

partnership and syndicate listing.

HOW MUCH DOES A SHARE COST ?

Once again this is dependent on the price of the horse and number of shareholders, but can range

from £5,000 to £15,000 with a much lower cost the following year(s) to just cover the training fees

etc...

ARE SHARES SOLD WITH VAT ?

Yes, VAT is charged on each share but is reclaimed by Chelsea Thoroughbreds and paid back to

the shareholder.

WHO BUYS THE HORSES ?

As it is impossible for one person be an expert in every department of thoroughbred racing, we

are reliant on the proven track record of our trainers, who all have built their reputations by

either using their own know how or being steered by professionals and experts.

We will also occasionally purchase a horse in training and we use the advice of a number of

shrewd judges who have a record second to none in this field.

WHAT MAKES CHELSEA THOROUGHBREDS DIFFERENT ?

We are unique because we have a “Club Base” that will welcome you seven days a week in

The Sydney Arms, just off the Kings Road in the heart of Chelsea, London. This means we are

able to regularly host Club gatherings. We also have great personal friendships with all of our

trainers and everyone we deal with attached to Chelsea Thoroughbreds and want to extend

those friendships to people who join Chelsea Thoroughbreds as owners. We act as your personal

racing concierge and offer a very professional and personal level of service so that gives you the

ownership experience we would want for ourselves.

WHAT DOES THE PRICE OF A SHARE INCLUDE ?

The share price covers all expenses including the purchase and training of the horses up to the

end of their racing season, including all vets bills, entry fees, transport, owners badge for race

days and stable visits.

A smaller additional sum, which is clearly stated on the Terms and Conditions is due for the

second and consecutive year after that for training fees and racing costs etc...

WILL CHELSEA THOROUGHBREDS ASK FOR MORE MONEY THAN STATED ON THE TERMS

and CONDITIONS ?

No.

CAN WE SEE THE HORSES BEING TRAINED ?

Yes, of course. We organise a yearling parade to give you the chance to see the horse(s) you

would like to own shares in prior to them going into full training and then set dates prior to the

flat season and try to organise a date during the busy season period when possible.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY HORSE IS RUNNING ?

We pride ourselves on our personal level of service and owners are kept fully informed as to the

progress and running plans of their horses. This is done primarily through email, but also by

phone and mobile at shorter notice.

WHAT HAPPENS ON RACEDAY ?

Chelsea Thoroughbreds makes available 1 owners badge for each 10% shareholder (or full

share) for collection from the owners entrance on the day their horse runs.

We try to offer more badges where possible and are usually successful, but this is in no way

guaranteed. Sometimes extra badges can be purchased depending on the course.

Owners will of course have access to the paddock and pre parade ring before the race as well as

all the Owner’s facilities provided by the track.

WHY IS JOINING CHELSEA THOROUGHBREDS BETTER THAN SOLE OWNERSHIP ?

Apart from the huge financial savings and cost effectiveness the club offers its owners, you

will most certainly have more fun! Many of our members ARE outright racehorse owners but

often find that the camaraderie is missing and the opportunity to network and meet like minded

people is much of what it is all about.

Also, you mathematically have a better chance of success being able to outlay your designated

shareholding over a different number of horses.

HOW ARE CHELSEA THOROUGHBREDS REMUNERATED ?

We try to keep the overall cost of the shares down as much as possible and charge a fixed

amount, per share, as a management fee. Also upon sale of the horse, if the proceeds exceed the

original purchase price, the company takes 10% of the surplus.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE PARTNERSHIP / SYNDICATE ?

Once the horse is sold the partnership / syndicate is wound up and accounts reviewed by the

auditors. All surplus of income over expenses is distributed to the shareholders. Any deficit is

consumed by the club.

IS THIS AN INVESTMENT ?

No. Any purchase of a share in a Chelsea Thoroughbreds managed racehorse should be

purchased solely for the enjoyment of racehorse ownership and not to be seen as an investment

in any way.
