Simply The Best
SIMPLY THE BEST
Lyric Adaptation by Phyllis A. Wingate, Joseph Leviner,
Stephanie Stewart and Jeannette Almeida
You come, you need us,
your health is on the line
You come to us, we’re there for you,
there for you
When you come to us,
give us your every need
You have a lifetime of hope and
a world full of dreams
Good Health, Hope, Healing,
you know what that means
And we sing a song
We take your health, and make you strong
CHORUS
We’re Simply the Best!
Better than all the rest!
Better for everyone, anyone with
needs-we’ve met
We’re stuck on the best!
Hung up on everything good
That sets us apart!
We won’t accept anything less!
We’re Atrium-the best!!
In your heart we see the need,
every night and every day
In your eyes, we see hope no one
can wash away
Just as long as you’re here in this space
You could be in no better place
[CHORUS]
Each time you leave us you’re taking control
You’re walking away, with our heart and soul
We are here for you, you’re never alone
Health, Hope and Healing until you grow old
[CHORUS]
2019 "I Love NorthEast Foundation" Teammate Giving Campaign
Chairs, Phyllis Wingate, President and Dr. Robert Kinney, VP of
Medical Education and Research (pictured right) challenged
Teammates to reach a goal of $278,000. In celebration, they
performed their rendition of Simply the Best.
GOOD EVENING,
FRIENDS!
Welcome to the 39th Annual NorthEast
Foundation Fashion Night! We are honored to
host this amazing event that through the years
has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars
invested into improving our hospital, Atrium
Health Cabarrus, and community. Tonight, we
have the opportunity to add to that with a
goal of raising $100,000 to support this great
hospital, which has helped to shape Cabarrus
and neighboring counties.
The Atrium Health Cabarrus mission statement
reads: “To Improve Health, Elevate Hope and
Advance Healing – for all.” Tonight we are all
here for the one common goal of supporting
our hospital. We are thankful for the people,
physicians, nurses, administrators, hospital staff
and everyone else who makes this hospital
great. Every day they are striving to do their
best for all. The money raised from tonight's
event supports innovative technology, special
programs and critically needed projects for
areas of our hospital.
Foundation Fashion Night is truly an event the
whole community can get behind with stores,
models, volunteers and restaurants coming
together from all surrounding areas of the
community. Whether you work for the hospital,
volunteer for the hospital, donate to the
Foundation, or are a first-time supporter, thank
you for being here! Tonight wouldn’t be possible
without the help of all of you.
We would also like to congratulate the wonderful
staff at the NorthEast Foundation on their 25th
Anniversary. Thank you for ALL you do every day
to make Atrium Health Cabarrus even better!
So please, sit back and enjoy the show!
Buddy Poole, Memories 98.3FM
THE HEART OF
MEMORIES 98.3FM
THE BUDDY POOLE STORY
It was the first Saturday of September in 2014
about 6 p.m. when I was climbing up to the
top of the press box at Livingstone College
in Salisbury to broadcast the kick-off game
of the new football season between Catawba
and Livingstone. I noticed a different pain in
my chest, so I sat down, took a drink of Coke
and did the game broadcast.
The following Friday evening my wife of one
month, Diane, and I went to Red Lobster in
Concord for dinner and on the way back on
I-85 I had the same pain again. She insisted
that I pull into the Emergency Department
in Kannapolis to get checked. Good thing I
did! It was around 9:30 p.m., and at 3 a.m. I
was transferred to Atrium Health Cabarrus in
Concord.
The next morning the doctor did a
catheterization on me and discovered I had
a blockage. I was taken back to my room
and was told the doctor would be in to see
me in a little while. Dr. Ralph Christy was the
cardiothoracic surgeon who came to talk with
me about my situation.
He was like Marcus Welby, MD (the main
character from the popular television
medical drama in the early 70s), very gentle
and kind as he explained to me the procedure
of a quadruple bypass. The thing I was so
worried about was I had just made a deal to
sell my radio station in Salisbury and part of
that agreement was, I had to stay and run it
for five years.
After Dr. Christy left, I got a call from the
man who was buying my radio station, Bill
Graham, and he asked if I got Dr. Christy as
my surgeon. I asked him, “Why did you ask
me that?” And he said, “Because he’s the
best there is.”
I truly believe that God sent him to help
me! The surgery went well, and I went back
to work in 12 days. The team of healthcare
providers at the hospital prevented me from
having a heart attack. The downside, I have
been teased about marrying a younger
woman and my heart couldn’t handle it!
I now go once a year to the Sanger Clinic
where Dr. Rau treats me. Thanks Atrium
Health Cabarrus and Dr. Christy for getting
me back on my feet.
Kevin Glascoe
A GRATEFUL
PATIENT
“I Have a New Birthday -
March 27!”
The day started out like any other, the cable guy
was at the house of Kevin Glascoe and his wife
Barbara in Concord. The cable guy stated they
might have to rewire part of the cable. After the
cable guy left, Kevin went into the attic to start
the rewire process and when exiting the attic, he
felt a discomfort in his chest area. He felt if he just
laid down maybe he would feel better. Something
told him he should get to the hospital. That’s
when he told his wife he was having some chest
discomfort. She felt nervous, had trouble finding
her keys and when she found them, they headed
to the Emergency Room.
When Kevin arrived at the Emergency Department
at Atrium Health Cabarrus, he was quickly taken
back to see a doctor. The nurse put on a cuff
to check his blood pressure and then everyone
started running around, and that’s the last thing
he can recall until he woke up two days later. But
what happened over those two days, changed his
life forever.
The doctor immediately identified Kevin was
having a heart attack. A Code STEMI was activated,
the protocol for a sudden complete blockage of
a coronary artery. While the nurse was preparing
to administer pre-procedure medications, Kevin
went into cardiac arrest. Within 35 minutes of
walking into the Emergency Department, he had
been defibrillated six times and received cardiac
compressions for seven minutes.
Upon the return of his circulation, Kevin requested
to see his wife Barbara. They expressed their love
for one another, and he told her everything would
be ok. A moment in time he cannot recall.
Kevin was taken to the cath lab for a cardiac
catheterization and within 68 minutes of arriving
at the Atrium Health Cabarrus Emergency
Department, a stent placement was performed,
and he had restored circulation to his heart.
“...who are you to
question me?”
While he was out for that time, he remembered
he had a dream, at least that’s what he thought it
was. In that dream he asked the question, “Why
did you bring me back” and the voice said, “who
are you to question me?”
“The first thing I remember is waking up to
my wife’s big smile,” Kevin recalled. “I thought
artist. On his many acres of property, you will
find one of the most coveted skateboarding
parks in the southeast and hundreds of unique
metal sculptures. As impressive as it is, it’s the
sculpture many years in the making that Tom
holds near and dear to his “heart.”
it was a dream, and I wanted to tell my
wife about it. I told her I had felt so at
peace and told her about the dream.”
After telling her about the dream his wife
told him that he died.
“It was then Barbara told me everything that
had happened, I had died in the Emergency
Room. That conversation changed my life
tremendously,” he continued. “My faith has
grown, my belief in people has grown, and I
feel like I was saved for a reason and that’s
to share my experience and educate my
friends and family and others on what to
look out for with their heart health.”
The day before he was going to be
discharged, he asked if any of the team that
cared for him in the Emergency Department
was available, so he could personally thank
them for saving his life. One of his nurses
Jamie, who was taking care of him, made
it happen with several other nurses and
doctors.
The Emergency Department team who
saved him went up to see him. Upon
entering the room, he was sitting on the bed
and immediately beamed at the group and
began articulating his thanks and gratitude -
even though the only person he remembers
seeing was the woman who was putting the
cuff on him.
“They wouldn’t let me go,” Kevin said
gratefully. “I am alive today because of
them. I am not going to waste it, I am going
to be a better person every day for the rest
of my life.
On New Year’s Day in 2016, Tom had a heart
attack. When he arrived at the Atrium Health
Emergency Department, doctors discovered
he had five blockages in his heart that required
surgery and extended recovery time. Tom, who
had always been healthy, had plenty of time to
think about what all that meant. As he rested
in his hospital bed, he drew one of the most
meaningful sketches he’s ever created. It was
his vision of what was going on with his heart.
“I always put
heart in my art.”
It took several
years, but Tom
eventually took
that sketch
and created
a one-of-akind
metal sculpture to capture his emotions
from that moment of time in his life. Tom
has graciously donated that sculpture to the
NorthEast Foundation and Atrium Health
Cabarrus to provide hope and healing to other
cardiac patients and show his gratitude for the
great care he received.
The sculpture will become a fixture in the
healing garden outside the new Heart &
Vascular Tower where it will be seen by all who
come to Atrium Health Cabarrus. The sculpture
will be the centerpiece of the Margie Campbell
Healing Garden and will stand atop a pedestal
that will house a time capsule to be opened
on the hospital's 100th birthday. Around it
will be a pergola, three benches, shrubs and
flowers intended to provide a place of refuge
and promote healing in patients, families and
teammates.
“I tell everyone on March 27, 2019, I was
born again.”
Happy seventh-month
Birthday, Mr. Glascoe!
Gran Mary's
STRAWBERRY CHEESE RING
One of my favorite holiday appetizer recipes
is also one of my oldest. I learned how to make
the Strawberry Cheese Ring from my mom. It’s
perfect for your holiday gathering. It only has 5
ingredients and can be made a couple of days in
advance.
INGREDIENTS:
- One pound block sharp cheddar cheese
grated (grate your own)
- One cup mayonnaise
- One cup chopped pecans
- One small onion chopped
- One small jar strawberry preserves OR if you
make your own - Even Better!!!
- Crackers
DIRECTIONS:
Mix the first four ingredients together and put in
a container until the day of your party.
On the day of your party - pull out your favorite
cake stand - using the cake stand as your table,
shape the cheese ring into a donut shape. Put the
strawberry preserves in the hole of your donut.
You can garnish the top with some extra chopped
pecans or a few pecan halves. Serve with crackers
like a cheeseball. You may have to tell your guests
how to eat it: a little cheese spread on the cracker
and then top with a little strawberry preserves
and ENJOY!!! It’s an interesting combination
but something about it just works. This will feed
around 20 guests but doubles or triples very
easily.
HEALTH, HOPE
AND HEELS
Q&A with Hospital President
Phyllis Wingate
Phyllis Wingate has been the president of Atrium Health Cabarrus
for 10 years, and recently announced her retirement at the end
of 2019. But before she leaves, we wanted to sit down with our
fearless and stylish president to discuss her leadership, legacy
and of course her fashion.
You have been a healthcare innovator,
an inspiration for those who work for
you and a driving force in ensuring
Atrium Health Cabarrus continues
to be a top medical facility for our
community. What do you hope will be
your legacy here?
I view legacy through the lens shared with us
by the great Maya Angelou. Your legacy is the
impact you’ve had on every person you’ve met.
I’d like to be thought of as a servant leader who
cared about our people and our patients-all of
them! I have tried to innovate and to advance the
services at AH Cabarrus so we could serve our
community the best we know how and to improve
the community’s health status, while making the
hospital and our related entities places where
individuals found joy in their work and where they
were given the opportunity to grow and develop
professionally and personally.
You’ve created a culture at Atrium
Health Cabarrus to always strive to be
“Simply the Best.” To what or to whom
do you attribute this vision?
I was inspired by our restated Mission and Vision
Statements. Atrium Health and Atrium Health
Cabarrus should be the first and best choice for
healthcare in the region. My team chose this as
the Hospital’s theme in 2019 as a means of rallying
around three areas where I wanted the facility to
stand out in 2019 and teammates to really lean in:
community service, patient safety and teammate
engagement. We tried to make the teammate
cultural development activities supporting this
theme challenging and fun! I do believe the
focus has given a lift to our culture and overall
performance.
You embraced this community, and
it embraced you back. What do you
say to others about Cabarrus and its
surrounding counties?
Cabarrus is a great place to live! Our geography
provides us the best of many worlds! The County
is small town and family. It is metropolitan
and progressive. It is open and inclusive, but
conservative or what I call new traditional. We
have great schools, small and large businesses,
world corporate headquarters and a state-of-theart
health care facility. We aren’t a diamond in the
rough any more, we are a gem!
32

Now to the lighthearted questions, what
would you say is your “personal style”
both at work and at home? And how
has it changed over the years? Who or
what has influenced your style?
I’m a fairly reserved person, so I don’t like flashy
things. I like simple, well made things that are
beautifully constructed and classic. This is what I
look for in my wardrobe and décor. Over the years
I’ve learned I don’t enjoy pattern and color that
much! In the early years I wore prints and some
bright colors or used chintz and paisley in my
home. Now almost everything is a solid color, more
neutral and with simple lines. My style and taste
have been influenced a lot by my hobby! I love
antiquing and interior design. I’ve subscribed to
Architectural Digest, for what seems like forever,
and have a large collection of books on classic
design and antiques.
And finally, what is one thing in your
closet you can’t live without (maybe a
Cam Newton Jersey)?
Really nice cotton pajamas.
Thank you for being an advocate for our
community, an advocate for our patients, an
advocate for our teammates and a great friend
of the Foundation. You are “Simply the Best.”
If you could go back and get rid of one
fashion trend from the past, what would
it be and why? And more importantly,
do you have photo evidence?
Bad hair styles.
