Vandals destroy fruit trees
at community garden
Tuesday November 12 2019
SEVERAL FRUIT trees in a
community food garden were cut
down by vandals on Thursday
night.
A woman discovered the
damaged trees at Radley Park,
Woolston, while she was out
walking her dog on Friday
morning.
They were part of the Roimata
Food Commons initiative,
which promotes healthy eating
by providing free fruit and
vegetables.
Volunteer project manager
Michael Reynolds was devastated
to hear the eight trees had been
destroyed.
“I went down straight away.
It wasn’t something I thought
would happen as we get so much
positive feedback on what we do,”
he said.
Four apple trees and an apricot
tree were well established with
fruit starting to grow, while two
more apple trees and a hazelnut
tree were recently planted.
Mr Reynolds is running a
$20,000 crowdfunding campaign
to hire a manager for the
volunteer-run commons to look
after the 2.6ha alongside the
Heathcote River.
Once fully grown, the park will
have about 90 heritage fruit trees,
as well as nut trees and vegetable
plants. Mr Reynolds describes
the area as a “food forest.”
Work has also started on a new
separate community garden,
which will cover 400 sq m.
The initiative helps people
reduce their food costs by saving
on fresh produce.
DEVASTATED:
Several fruit
trees were
cut down by
vandals at a
community
garden in
Radley Park,
Woolston.
Mr Reynolds thought the trees
may have been cut down by
someone who did not understand
the idea behind the initiative.
“It just shows that we’ve got to
keep engaging the community
so that everyone understands
what we are trying to achieve.
Incidents like this just show
that we haven’t quite reached
everyone.”
Residents raise concerns
over speeding buses
Said Mr Gibbon: “Our
expectation is that drivers
operating Metro services drive
in a safe manner and comply
with all road rules.
“We understand the . . .
community board is considering
this issue currently. This is good
because if there is an issue with
the speed of heavy
vehicles in the area,
the city council, as
the road controlling
authority, has the
ability to put in place
remedies.”
Go Bus South Island
regional general
manager Ben Barlow
could not be reached
for comment on the
issue.
Linwood Ward city councillor
Yani Johanson said residents are
frustrated with the impact of
speeding buses.
“The complaint that residents
have had is that they’re [buses]
speeding and they’re causing a
lot of excessive vibrations and
they’re finding it really hard to
sleep at night. It’s quite often
early in the morning or late
at night. They’ve repeatedly
complained to ECan, Go Bus
and council, and they’re just not
Yani Johanson
satisfied that things have been
done.”
He said implementing heavy
vehicle restrictions on the
roads used by buses may be one
solution.
“We do need to put a heavy
vehicle restriction onto the
streets, and then before that we
need to also as a community
board write to ECan just
expressing our concern.”
Said city council
operations transport
manager Steffan Thomas:
“[City council] staff do
not recommend heavy
vehicle restrictions for
Hay St and Ruru Rd
because these roads are
intended to be a through
route linking the arterial
roads and residential and
industrial areas.
“Council is aware that some
residents may experience
vibrations when heavy vehicles
drive past. If problem locations
can be identified and reported
to council, staff can investigate
potential repairs to the road,” he
said.
Cr Johanson said bus drivers
should be encouraged to obey
the speed limit, particularly
when using streets near the
Maces Rd depot.
