Your Paris Winter Getaway

Winter is the perfect time to visit Paris. 

The crowds are gone. The weather is not as 

cold as many U.S. cities. Since you will be 

spending a lot of time in museums, it does 

not matter anyway. Plus, Paris has a great 

gay scene and a gayborhood (The Marais). 

Getting There 

I snagged a great low fare on Delta Airlines. 

The service was exceptional—and 

everything was free. Free hot dinner and 

breakfast, free headsets, free blankets and 

pillows, free eyeshades, and more. 

Once in Paris, hop on the commuter rail 

to town, the RER-B then take the Metro to 

get to your hotel from the Gare du Nord 

Station. 

Where to Stay 

I stayed at The Moxy, a new Marriott brand 

geared for millennials. The rate was very 

reasonable (it varied by day with one day at 

just 93 Euros or around $110). It is located 

near the Marais in the Bastille District 

and near no less than 3 Metro stations. 

You can walk to many of the major attractions 

or hop on the subway. Two nearby 

stores (Franprix) have everything you need 

including salad bars, hot sandwiches, and a 

great selection of wine. 

Nightlife 

The bars are mostly in the Marias. Bears 

will of course like the Bears’ Den. The 

Open Café serves food and is a lot of fun. 

Sly Bar has a great happy hour and karaoke 

on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Raidd 

bar has a shower show. You can dance the 

night away at Le Depot. 

What to do 

The first day I walked around the historic 

Marais District. Like many gayborhoods, it 

has been gentrified and is now full of highend 

stores as well. 

The second day visit the Eiffel Tower, 

the Arc de Triomphe, walk along the 

Seine River, and explore the shops of the 

Champs-Elysees. Then visit the new Leonardo 

da Vinci exhibit at The Louvre. 

The third day explore the Natural History 

Museums, the zoo (Le Zoo du Jardin des 

Plantes), the Indoor Tropical Gardens, the 

Botanical Gardens, and then walk back to 

the hotel. There is also a farmer’s market 

on Sundays in the Bastille District where 

you can find local delicacies including pig’s 

feet, French cheeses, Paella, and every kind 

of pastry and bread you could want. 

I liked the new Liberation Museum (Musee 

de la Liberation de Paris) which chronicles 

the German occupation of France.

Day four go to visit Montmartre and the 

Sacred Heart Cathedral. Great views of 

Paris. Be sure and visit the Montmartre 

Museum as well and the associated Renoir 

Gardens. 

Where to eat 

Grab coffee at Alma Coffee. Don’t ask for 

milk or cream in your coffee. The French 

don’t use it and don’t drink (although they 

eat a lot of cheese). 

Ma Bourgogne has great steak and fries (in 

the Morais). 

Travel Tips 

• Your ATM card works at French 

banks and they don’t charge a withdrawal 

fee. 

• Many of the museums are free the 

first Sunday of the month in the winter. 

• Paris is seven hours ahead of Chicago 

so the jet lag is a hassle. Try to check 

into your hotel early but wait until 3 to take 

a nap. On the way home, stay up late at 

home to re-adjust. 

• The Euro is worth slightly more 

than the U.S. dollar. 

• Tips are included at restaurants. 

• Buy a 10 ticket pack of Metro tickets 

and save. 

• Turn off your phone and put it in 

Airplane mode. Shut off all data for all 

your apps too. Otherwise you will face 

roaming charges from French carriers 

which can be quite high. Most places have 

free internet so you can stay connected that 

way. 

• Most locals speak some English but 

if you can, try to start the conversation in 

French.

has a lot of ideas especially for nightlife 

(Qweek.fr) along with maps of the neighborhoods.

a map. 

ParisInfo.com has travel tips as well and 

you can visit them at the Hotel de Ville 

(City Hall) in the Marias. 

You can’t beat a winter visit to gay Paree.

THE TRUMP IMPEACHMENT - HOW ARTISTS ARE RESPONDING 

Donald Trump as President of the United 

States has caused more upheaval in this 

democracy than any previous president 

or any other political individual in U.S. 

history. He has caused much anxiety and 

angst even before he was elected to the 

presidency by the electoral college, with 

at least a five million deficit of actual 

votes cast. Trump threatened many 

artists and other individuals even before 

his inauguration and following. His 

bullying, intimidation, attempts to revive 

libel laws and attempting to revoke 

T.V. licensees, and, to sue individuals 

who criticized him gained him no 

friends among performing artists of all 

categories. 

Artists are historically the first to react 

to tyranny, repression, bigotry, and 

racism. There are at least 39 known 

musicians who have complained about 

or refused Trump to use their music 

in his campaigns and rallies. Among 

them is Elton John who objected to 

Trump using "Tiny Dancer", and, "Little 

Rocket Man", at his rallies. although 

Elton John did perform at Trump's third 

wedding to Melania, he fell out with 

Trump after hearing his initial campaign 

speeches. Others include Neil Young, 

for Trump's use of "Rocking In The Free 

World" although he had the rights to use 

the music. Even deceased musicians, 

George Harrison's Estate rebelled against 

the use of "Here Comes The Sun", in 

Trump's inauguration. Others who 

have protested Trump in their concerts 

and other performances include: Adele, 

Beyonce, Cher, Kendrick Lamar, R.E.M., 

Madonna, and, John Legend, to name 

only a few who rejected Trump as an 

uncouth individual and as president. 

Visual artists working with varied media 

from drawing, painting, sculpture and 

other in-between materials have been 

responding to Trump's incompetence 

and bigotry for the past 3+ years.

released this week titled, "Warning".

incompetent, dangerous individual in 

Donald Trump, who should definitely not 

be reelected and should be removed from 

office before more damage is done. 

One female artist going by the name 

Swoon, has stated where the arts should 

attempt to be during the remainder of the 

Trump dynasty, quoted, " Well, the United 

States has historically been a racist, sexist 

nation, By law and be deed. And this is 

changing. As that changes, huge numbers 

of people who are uncomfortable with 

change, who are a little disenfranchised, 

who need someone to blame for their 

unhappiness have found a candidate who 

suggests to them that all of their worst 

impulses are acceptable.......My goal is to 

get past my bitterness and learn to have 

compassion for what I see as the misguided 

suffering of those 60 million people who 

thought this (Trump) government was

Hatsune Miku is back this year with a new 

design for the winter season of Hokiado in 

Japan. This character variation of Hatsune 

Miku is called "Snow Miku". 

Each year, the character design for one of 

Japan's famous pop star/VIRTUAL DIVAS 

is chosen through fan-made submissions 

with a new theme each year. Submissions 

already happened for this year and were 

up for votes on Goodsmile Company's 

website, while submissions for artwork are 

submitted to Piapro. The results this year 

were announced at one of Hatsune MIku's 

concert, The Magical Mirai 2019.

America can't seem to get to freedom - Part 2 

The great debate will continue because we 

wont let go of the rotted beliefs of the past 

to enjoy the fruits of the future. We discover 

something, then we scream in fear and ban it 

and then we decide it is OK. Then a miracle is 

declared. I would argue man has done most of 

the heavy lifting. And that is my point really. 

How can you frighten a man whose 

hunger is not only in his own cramped 

stomach but in the wretched bellies of 

his children? You can't scare him – he 

has known a fear beyond every other.

Man considers himself a sinner. We drive each 

other mad with it, self-flagellation generally 

is hitting oneself with a whip as part of a 

religious ritual like Gay S&M really, but its 

just not the gays but others mostly who feel 

constant pressure to prove themselves worthy. 

Dads work hard to earn the bread, Moms do 

things out of a labor of love, Philanthropists 

give until it hurts, all others take. This is but 

one of our long held non-mailable beliefs. 

The results almost universally made worse by 

the indifferent fixes of the ruling class. Simply 

because the ruling class has not ever once 

needed fixes. That is maybe, until now.

say what comes after Trump. Many in the 

minority community have valid concerns. The 

we get left out biggest concern. 

I give you a cautionary tale of how Hitler put 

gay men and women in the camps to suffer 

along side the other undesirables, only to 

suffer again by being forced to wear a pink 

triangle intended as a badge of shame. But a 

badge reclaimed by the LGBT community as 

a symbol to unite us in our struggles against 

continued discrimination. Those that know 

and understood we were not welcome. Later 

when WWII was ended and the camps 

liberated. But not the gays, we got sent back to 

jail. 

We endured when Alan Turin, one credited 

with ending the war was later tried and 

convicted of being a homosexual. Turned to 

suicide. 

We endured again when we had to listen to 

Anita Bryant, a beloved American singer turn 

into an anti-gay rights activist to the clamor of 

gay rights. 

So when a person asks to be President 

We have a new liberal majority, one that is today, we are well served to remember John
