the year, right?

Firstly, we can all finally get excited about Christmas without causing an

outrage, start Christmas planning and most importantly - begin Christmas

which here in Spain is a gorgeous time of year - warm enough through the

years since the end of the First World War - now that is something we all

feel extremely grateful for every November. Wear your Poppy in support

With our change in the so called ''first

world countries'' to a throw away

society when it comes to clothes, as

opposed to make do and mend

attitude of previous generations is

causing massive harm to the planet.

So how can I as an individual

change anything to help the climate ?

Sir Dave Brailsford -British cycling’s guru- when asked how he

had brought about the change in the nations fortunes on the

track and road, replied Marginal Gains.

Put simply, rather than try and make wholesale revolutionary

change it was all done in small steps and many small steps

add up to a giant leap forward, and when approaching climate

change as individuals for most of us - this is the way to go.

We cannot on our own save the world but if every citizen on

the planet tried to reduce their personal carbon footprint by

say 10% the problem would be dramatically reduced.

So how to achieve this goal ?

There are three areas in which man is causing most damage

to the environment - agriculture, transport and the current

worst polluter FASHION.

I can almost hear the screams - fashion ???

Sorry it is a reality Google it up if you don’t believe me.

The move towards man made

materials from those which occur

naturally and towards bright chemically

manufactured dyes and colours is

causing pollution as irresponsible

manufacturers dispose of chemicals in

unsafe ways .

As we have demanded cheaper and

cheaper clothes the production has

tended to move to places where costs

are low and standards of care lower -

all so we can wear it once and throw it

away.

You then hit another major issue the

goods produced in these far flung

places have to be transported to its

target market places. Another major

carbon footprint .

The move towards man made

materials from those which occur

naturally and towards bright chemically

manufactured dyes and colours is

causing pollution as irresponsible

manufacturers dispose of chemicals in

unsafe ways .

Now I would never suggest that

we stop buying new clothes,

there is little doubt that looking

good helps people to feel good

and that is massively important.

However if you buy something

new then you should purchase

responsibly if your undecided

between two garments how

about looking at the label and

seeing where they are made,

say one is from Spain and the

other from China by purchasing

the locally produced item you

have a marginal gain on your

carbon footprint. Do this ten

times a year and you have a

decent positive.

The other major way to get a

gain with fashion is to recycle an

item each time you buy

something new - we all know

which clothes we will wear again

and which are cupboard fillers -

if we move these unwanted

items on we are helping. For the

big one off event ask seriously

do I really need a new outfit that

I will almost certainly just wear

the once?

Maybe take your unwanted

clothes to a charity shop, lots

around pick your cause and

hand over your goods,

if someone else then buys it

both the charity benefits and

that person has an incremental

gain as a new item is not

required. If you feel your old

stuff is rubbish put it in one of

the charity clothes bins, some of

these items are passed onto

people who are struggling but

the bulk are turned into rags

used in industry - incremental

gain no new material required.

Whatever you do - do not just

throw it in the rubbish bin .

Talking of which - agriculture -

the next big demon...

As the trend has moved towards

eating more red meat we are

damaging the planet - not to put

too fine a point on it animals fart,

they produce methane one of

the most damaging emitted

gases. The animals also require

fodder and the deforestation of

the planet has often been to

provide land to grow this feed.

So reduce the amount of meat

eaten and you have a double

gain less methane and less land

needed to grow the fodder.

So how can we change our

habits to make the gain , if I eat

red meat five days a week in

a fortnight I have had ten

portions, if I lose one portion I

have a 10% gain .

It may even have health

benefits and that really would be

a double whammy !!

Similarly with dairy products Mrs

Cow blasts them out as much

as her beefy counterpart,

consider what you eat and drop

one in ten portions of dairy.

And I haven’t even mentioned

pesticides or reduction in the

bee population or diminishing

hedgerows or a myriad of other

things - just a small achievable

change.

One more thing here if you must

buy from certain fast food

chains never use the drive

through your emissions when

ticking over are ridiculously high

in comparison to normal driving

and for you just as importantly

you will not get served any

quicker.

Which leads nicely into

Transport forgetting the

willingness of some to cast cars

and aeroplanes as the most evil

of all inventions like it or not

they are here to stay for a while

and rather than moan about

them try and find a way to make

some gains.

Air travel. Did you know if you

travel first class your carbon

footprint increases by a factor of

about three over coach class?

Wonders why anyone is allowed

to do it. Big gain if you never

have to or have ever been

tempted !

Surprisingly, the most hated

airline Ryanair is one of the

greenest. By squeezing you in,

not in any way encouraging you

to take luggage and running

newish aircraft - Michael

O’Reilly and the boys run an

airline which endeavours to

cause less damage to the world

than most and according to the

experts achieve this aim.

It goes without saying if you

take five flights a year reduce

that by one and you have a

twenty percent reduction in your

personal carbon output. All you

have to do is think about what

you are doing, we know

unplanned events will

sometimes force your actions

but control the things you can

and anything becomes possible.

One other thought taking a rail

journey from - say Murcia to

Madrid - as opposed to flying or

driving is again another massive

reduction in your footprint and

by the time you have queued at

the airports/in traffic probably

not that much longer of a

journey.

The car - look we all currently believe we need one - and because

of the reprehensible behaviour of politicians decimating public

transport and that of many vehicle manufacturers actions

surrounding emission reporting, we may all be driving around in

more polluting vehicles than we might want to, or we thought that

we were. For many changing the car at the drop of a hat is neither

affordable or practical.

If your buying new think hard about your purchase ask the question

do I need a Chelsea tractor for the two of us ? Why have a massive

gas guzzling engine to get you from home to the supermarket ?

Look at the electric cars and the hybrids - ultimately if governments

are to believed you will not have a choice. Whatever you do buy a

car that suits your needs everyday not a couple of days a year. It is

actually cost beneficial to hire a bigger car for the few days you

really need one rather than motor around in a big polluting box.

For the individual your gains are not that difficult to achieve if most

importantly you want to... If you go to work or take the kids to

school and the neighbour around the corner does the same travel

together - its cheaper, its greener and it is massive carbon footprint

gain to both of you if you take turns.

Similarly, if you see the same friends in the same supermarket

every week go together ... Gain, gain, gain! You never know you

may do coffee or lunch and make the mundane more interesting.

Finally, do not jump in the car to see the folks up the road a few

hundred metres away - walking will not kill you and lets be honest

out here your going to be very unlucky to get wet!

Marginal gains - small changes to make a greener world and all of

us can do it - the choice is yours!

F.A.C.E. is proud of its 11 years of history, which has helped to make

it the premier people charity in the Almanzora Valley.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS

MARKET.

In 2003 the mother of the Founder of F.A.C.E., Adele Wrigglesworth

registered her to take part in the “MacMillan Biggest Ever Coffee

Morning in the World” event. Adele had never done charity work but

set about organising her first ever charity event, in Los Garcias,

Arboleas. Over years the event grew from being a garden event to

taking over the whole street. However it was felt that money raised

in Spain, should remain in Spain, and so from these humble

beginnings, and with much help from the Arboleas Ayuntamiento,

the present day F.A.C.E. Charity was born! It was unfortunate for the

F.A.C.E. Charity that Adele retired when she returned to the United

Kingdom in April 2019. However the Charity is still steaming ahead

in the capable hands of Carrie Ann Earl.

F.A.C.E. organises different events throughout the year, including

Raffles, Tombola’s, Bar Services for local theatre groups, quizzes

and “nearly new” clothes sales. In addition it organises and hosts

two major events in Arboleas over the year, one during the Summer

and the other at Christmas.

In July 2015 F.A.C.E. was nominated and won a prestigious award at

the 6th Annual Almanzora Valley Awards for its charity work. This

was the first time that a British run charity had been put forward

for one of these awards.

F.A.C.E. comprises of a hard working group of volunteers, who try to

raise funds for organisations at a local level in Arboleas and

throughout the Almanzora Valley. F.A.C.E. has supported over the

years, on a Nationallevel, the A.E.C.C. (Asociación Española Contra

el Cancer) and A.L.C.E.R. (Asociación para la Lucha Contra Las

Enfermedades del Riñon). On a more regional basis it has suported

M.A.C.S (Mojacar Area Cancer Support) and locally it has in the past

supported Little Owls in Arboleas, and Grupo Scout 106 del Saliente

in Albox and recently has donated to Walk4Life, Arboleas and to Age

Support, Almanzora.

F.A.C.E. is acutely aware that none of the above could have been

achieved without the support of the local community. For this

support in the past F.A.C.E. is eternally grateful and hopes that it

will continue throughout the forth coming years of our history.

once a day. This is A LOT of content you’ll need to

share but that’s because your social media will make

the biggest impact in your results for the month.

Imagine your target audience retired seniors who

check their social accounts in the morning and

checks then in the evening.

If you only post once a day, and it’s not when they

online, they will never see your post.

Let’s look at it another way: You post once a day, you

reach 100 people with that post. You post again and

reach 70 people. By posting twice, you’ve reached

170 people. But make sure you read group rules

where you post as you do not want to get banned for

over posting.

Social media has been a real game changer for

businesses and for one reason, it’s SOCIAL. It really

is the connection between you and your future

clients. Now, in order to take full advantage of this

medium that’s so beneficial for your business, the

one rule is that you have to be there. I know…

ugggghhh, another thing you have to do for your

business.

To get started, grab a blank calendar. The first step to making social media easier is by breaking it down

into a monthly, weekly, and daily tasks.

Your content is going to support your overall

monthly marketing goals. It may seem like every

day on multiple platforms is a lot of content to be

creating – but the good news is you don’t have to

create it! Of course, you’ll be sharing the content

you create but sharing content that’s relevant to

your fans is a brilliant way to cultivate a community

with you as the resource provider.

Don’t forget to mix it up – Gather articles, images,

even videos to appeal to a larger audience.

Here’s 2 tips to make finding content easy:

Write down your monthly goals and create a list

of things you need to share this month. What is

super important for you to accomplish this

month? Here’s a few examples…

Are you launching a new program or product?

Are you hosting an event?

Do you want to sell [x amount] of your products?

Are you trying to add 1,000 new subscribers?

Do you want to reach 3,000 Facebook fans?

This is helpful because it determines the type of

content you should focus on sharing. Plus, you

can pre-schedule out your promotional content

as you need it.

For example: If I’m trying to grow my subscriber

list, I’m going to schedule more content that

relates to opportunities for people to opt in to my

list.

-OR- If I’m promoting a new program, I’ll have to

schedule content that leads buyers into my blog

posts that promote my products, discounts or

offers for the program, and offer to purchase the

program.

1) Create a resource list. This can be a list of 5-

10 resources, websites, Facebook pages from

relevant industries that you can share content from

which provides value to your fans.

Example:

Gather enough content (yours included) that you

can share throughout the month. Then, you can

start scheduling it out.

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month

of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular

cancer, and men's suicide. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event,

housed at Movember.com. The goal of Movember is to "change the face of men's health."

By encouraging men (whom the charity refers to as "Mo Bros") to get involved, Movember

aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately

reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember

Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a

healthier lifestyle.

Across the world, men die an average six years younger than women, and for reasons

that are largely preventable. Which means that it doesn’t have to be that way: we can all

take action to live healthier, happier and longer lives.
