SAINT STEPHEN’S COLLEGE
Saint Stephen’s College – a place of fellowship and learning
Saint Stephen’s College Headmaster, Jamie Dorrington, wants
students to leave school each day with a smile on their face and
their brain hurting a bit because it’s been exercised.
“It is always a great pleasure to walk through our grounds and chat
to our students. I love seeing their smiling faces and hearing their
stories about their activities in and out of school. So many of them
are involved in a range of activities that were never offered to me as
a student, and they have developed skills that are the envy of many
adults,” said Dr Dorrington.
“To quote a line from our College Hymn, we want our school to ‘be
a place of fellowship and learning’. The fellowship is important in
its own right, but it also forms the foundation for learning. As I have
often said, I want students to leave the campus at the end of the
day with a smile on their face, and their brain hurting a bit because
it has been exercised.”
He says he has seen a remarkable transformation in the approach to
teaching and learning, campus facilities and student opportunities
since his appointment in 2003.
“Adaptive learning and collaboration are key to preparing students.
Examples include our adaptive maths program. We’re stretching our
students without making learning perplexing. They love it,” he said.
College Headmaster Dr Jamie Dorrington chats with students
“Teachers have embraced opportunities to collaborate, which
enhances student learning. There are plans for a Senior Learning
Hub – which is a flexible learning environment, open early in the
Centre of Music Excellence
Collaborative learning spaces
“Project-based learning in Year 10 is where students work on
interdisciplinary projects. Team Projects provides the skills to work
in teams. Some of the range of studies includes finding solutions
to local traffic problems, creating
opportunities in the local tourist
market, and bringing refugee
children into school to play sport.
“Saint Stephen’s College has also
invested in ‘bricks and mortar’ to
create state-of-the-art collaborative
learning spaces. The recently
opened Centre of Music Excellence
adds to the list; others include
the LOTE (Languages Other Than
English) Centre, with webinar rooms;
the iCentre (library); the Science-
In-Action Centre and the Arts and
Applied Technology Precinct with the
latest sound recording and black box studios.
morning until late at night – and allows students to work with the
Learning Management System and meet with teachers one-to-one
or in small groups.
“Our mission statement is to develop character and inspire hope
- this is what we deliver through our unique balance of advanced
technology, core community values and learning life skills.”
