Buy a Wreath, Honor a Veteran

REGIONAL – For the last 

five years the community has 

rallied to help Donnie Jarvis, 

a veteran of the Iraqi and 

Afghanistan wars, buy enough 

holiday wreaths to lay one 

next to the headstones of every 

veteran’s grave in Newbury 

and Newburyport. 

Jarvis, a Triton Regional 

High School graduate, 

collected between 600 and 

800 wreaths each December 

for the last few years and with 

a host of volunteers placed one on each 

grave. 

This year, because of Jarvis’ job helping 

other veterans cope with PTSD, addictions 

and other battle-related disorders, he 

turned the wreath program over to the 

Newbury Boy Scout Troop No. 44. 

“This is the first year that the troop has 

taken on this responsibility,” Jarvis said. 

Last week, Jarvis put out an urgent call 

to the wreath program supporters to order 

more wreaths and encourage their friends 

to buy a wreath. 

The wreaths must be ordered by Dec. 2 

if they are to arrive by mid-month. Each 

wreath, decorated with a red bow and an 

American flag, costs $15. Wreaths can 

be ordered at www.NewburyWreaths. 

com. Wreaths forms can also be picked 

up at Newburyport City Hall, Newbury 

Town Hall and Newburyport Chamber of 

Commerce. 

“We are asking our supporters to show 

their support by displaying a lawn sign 

and sharing their lawn sign on social 

media to let their friends know about the 

project and how others can be part of the 

cause,” Jarvis wrote. 

Lawn signs are available at the Newbury 

and Byfield Fire Department. 

Wreaths can be sponsored in 

remembrance of a loved one, whether

they were a veteran or not or if they were 

even buried in Newbury or Newburyport, 

Jarvis said. Wreaths will only be placed on 

veterans’ gravestones in Newbury and at 

the Veterans Cemetery in Newburyport. 

“With your help, the Newbury Boy 

Scouts will be able to place a wreath 

on veterans’ grave in Newbury,” Jarvis 

wrote. 

Newbury is the home of veterans who 

have served in wars from the American 

Revolutionary War to the recent wars 

in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Our goal is to 

recognize the service of our veterans to our 

town and to our country by honoring as 

many veterans as possible with a veterans’ 

wreath that symbolizes Honor, Respect 

and Victory,” he wrote. 

At noon on Dec. 14, there will be a 

ceremony at the Byfield Community 

Arts Center hosted by the Boy Scouts to 

honor all veterans. It will feature seven 

Ceremonial Wreaths to represent each 

branch of the Armed Forces including 

the POW/MIAs and Merchant Marines. 

The wreaths will be placed on the graves 

following the ceremony.

Community Solar Power Comes to Newburyport

right or the up-front 

costs of installing solar 

panels is out of reach? 

The City of 

Newburyport is 

offering about 100 

homes the opportunity 

to participate in a 

Community Solar

program that will allow The Salisbury Solar Farm 

them to benefit from solar panels on a 

farm 80 miles away in Sutton, a town 

south of Worcester. 

Subscribers to the program, provided 

by Nexamp, will save 15 percent on their 

National Grid monthly electricity bill 

with no up-front costs or having to pay 

for installing solar panels on their roof. 

National Grid will continue to deliver 

the electricity to the homes. Subscribing 

to the program, at no cost, earns credits, 

which reduces the energy bill. And there 

are no panels on your roof to maintain. 

With Community Solar there are no 

sign-up or other fees, no annual contract, 

and the homeowner can cancel anytime. 

But if they want to stay in the program, it 

will last for 20 to 25 years, the lifespan of 

the Sutton solar farm. 

“The question I often get is ‘what’s the 

catch?’” said Keith Hevenor, director of 

communications for Nexamp. 

The Boston-based company and Molly 

Ettenborough, the city’s manager of 

recycling and energy programs, say there 

are no catches. They met last week twice 

with residents to explain the program and 

answer questions. 

Because only 100 homes can sign up for 

the program, Ettenborough said residents 

need to act quickly. Those who are not 

among the first 100 will be placed on a 

waiting list in the event that a subscriber 

drops out of the program. 

“Approximately 50 percent of homes 

can’t support rooftop solar panels,” 

Nexamp’s web site states. “If yours is 

one of them, Community Solar is a 

super easy way to support local clean 

energy and save up to 15 percent on 

electricity.” 

The new community solar farm in 

Sutton is under construction now and 

will add 1 megawatt of clean energy to 

the National Grid electric grid. 

In the first of its kind agreement 

the City of Newburyport has signed 

five contracts with Nexamp to provide 

credits for solar panels on city-owned 

buildings. A portion of the solar farm 

has been reserved for Newburyport 

residents. 

With the city’s existing solar programs 

at the Nock Molin School and the 

Salisbury solar farm, close to 60 percent 

of the city’s municipal energy usage will 

now come from renewable sources. 

The city’s goal as part of the C-40 

Climate Mayor’s program is to have 

all new buildings be at net zero energy 

usage by 2030 and all buildings be at

the graves at Arlington had on 

him, he made arrangements to 

donate the wreaths to be placed 

on graves in the older sections of 

the national cemetery where few 

visitors came.

American Legion and VFW 

Posts gathered with members of 

the community to decorate each 

wreath with traditional red, handtied 

bows. Members of the Maine 

State Society of Washington, 

D.C. helped to organize the 

wreath-laying, which included a 

special ceremony at the Tomb of 

the Unknown Soldier. 

In 2005, a photo of the wreaths 

at Arlington Cemetery went viral 

on the Internet and sparked an 

interest around the country to 

place holiday wreaths on veterans’ 

graves.

its national network of volunteers 

in recent years lay more than 

700,000 memorial wreaths

power will play a significant role

There was an article written 

in the The Boston Globe a while 

back entitled “The Mistakes 

Doctors Make”………….. 

and right below that was a 

column called “Advice for all 

ages: Don’t skip the dentist.” 

They were both interesting 

perspectives. 

The dental article starts 

with, “Earlier this month, 

a team of researchers from 

London and the University 

of Connecticut announced 

that aggressive treatment of 

gum disease can improve the 

function of blood vessel walls in 

the body, potentially reducing 

the risk of heart attacks.” The 

concept is nothing new. We 

have known for years of the 

mouth-body connection with 

health. However, the key to the 

statement above is “aggressive 

treatment of gum disease”. 

What does aggressive 

treatment of gum disease 

mean? It means that instead 

of watching and waiting for 

resolution of gum problems on 

its own, whatever treatment is 

needed to achieve gum health 

should be performed.

be addressed. Let’s get it right 

out in the open – Once you 

have periodontal disease, and 

even after it is treated, it will 

always return unless you follow 

a strict regimen of home care 

and professional care…….for 

your entire life. 

Even the smallest amount 

of inflammation in your 

mouth is gum disease. 

Periodontal disease is a chronic 

inflammatory process. As 

the article states, “Chronic 

inflammation anywhere, 

makes the body release nasty 

chemicals called cytokines that 

have been linked to diabetes 

and heart disease.” It goes on 

to say, “Cytokines can also 

trigger inflammation in artery 

walls, raise blood pressure, 

worsen cholesterol levels, 

and increase blood clotting, 

which can lead to potentially 

fatal heart attacks.” This also 

includes strokes. “Pregnancy 

complications, too, have been 

linked to gum disease, perhaps 

because chronic inflammation 

leads to high levels of a 

hormone-like substance called 

prostaglandin E-2, which can 

induce labor.” 

So, what are you waiting for? 

No one wants to hear that they 

need treatment for something. 

It is even harder to get someone 

to “treat something” that does 

not hurt and is seemingly not 

affecting their daily life. The 

fact of the matter is, periodontal 

disease is a disease. Diseases 

need to be treated or they will 

affect and possibly even end 

your life. Periodontal disease is 

no exception. And remember, 

“aggressive treatment” does not 

mean watch and wait to see if 

it goes away. It won’t go away 

on its own – I promise.

Scammers Want Your DNA ... and Medicare Number 

Scammers will exploit every 

possible opportunity to commit 

fraud against seniors. This time 

they’re going after our DNA. 

The newest fraud involves billing 

Medicare for special testing that our 

doctors haven’t asked for. As is typical, 

they go for our vulnerabilities. These 

scammers claim they have tests 

for Parkinson’s, cancer, dementia, 

hereditary cancer and more. All we 

have to do to guard our health is to 

agree to these “free” tests and submit

to a cheek swab right on the spot, or 

they’ll send us a kit in the mail or 

come to our home. All they need in 

order to get us the results, they say, is 

our Medicare information. 

That’s what they really want, 

our Medicare number, so they can 

submit a claim for the tests, some 

costing $9,000 to $11,000 each. If 

Medicare turns down the request for 

payment, you could be liable for the 

full amount. 

Beware being approached by 

anyone when you’re out and about. 

The DNA scammers approach 

seniors at fairs, the farmers market, 

by phone, in a parking lot, at aging 

conferences, health fairs or even at 

events set up by their community 

or church. (One group thought they 

were getting free ice cream to listen 

to a presentation.) 

If someone approaches you about 

these “free” DNA tests, say no. If 

you receive a test in the mail anyway, 

do not open it. Go online to oig. 

hhs.gov/fraud/hotline and tell them 

about the test. Or you can call 1- 

800-447-8477, which is the hotline 

for the Department of Health and 

Human Services. You also can call 

Medicare, your local police and the 

state attorney general. 

Never give anyone your Medicare 

number or personal information 

unless it’s your regular doctor. 

Besides the phony DNA tests, you 

could become a victim of other kinds 

of fraud.
