If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, determining
what qualifies as a beautiful building is not an
easy task. Buildings affect people in different ways,
from the shape and colour to the finishing touches
and even the friendliness of a building. Changing
fashions and beliefs, new ideas and technologies,
materials and sustainability all influence a
building's appeal. Beauty in a building may be a
step back to a bygone era where wealth and power
were displayed in a palatial property. In contrast,
the bare simplicity of an austere and brutal
concrete building can be just as seductive today.

Beautiful Buildings for Business
London Metropolitan University
Holloway, London N7 8DB
On the Holloway Road site of the London
Metropolitan University, the award-winning
Graduate Centre has been a striking landmark
in Islington for the last 15 years. It was designed
by the internationally renowned architect Daniel
Libeskind, who was master planner for the World
Trade Centre redevelopment in New York.
The stainless steel structure that forms the
centre was named among the world's top ten
spectacular university buildings in the world
when it opened. Further accolades followed with
Building of the Year (Royal Fine Art Commission
Trust) and the Royal Institute of British Architects
Regional Award (London North and West).
The Graduate Centre is clad in stainless steel panels
that create a shiny, ever changing exterior surface
while inside natural light spills in through the large
geometric windows. Spread over two floors, the
building features three break-out rooms and a
theatre with a capacity for 90 delegates. Each space
benefits from modern and adaptable furniture to
encourage more collaborative working along with
more traditional presentations.
In total contrast to the Graduate Centre, the
university's Great Hall dates back to 1896 and
features stunning Victorian architecture. Following a
refurbishment, this versatile space can be used for
conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs and receptions.

Beautiful Buildings for Business
Imperial War Museum North - Manchester
Manchester, Gtr Manchester M17 1TZ
Another multi award-winning building from
Daniel Libeskind is the Imperial War Museum
North in Manchester. Overlooking The Quays in
MediaCityUK, the extraordinary design represents
the earth, air and water in three interlocking
fragments. The Earth Shard is the museum space
and represents conflict and war. With projected
images, observatories and educational spaces,
the Air Shard is the striking entrance and
completing the concept is the Water Shard. This
forms a viewing platform of the canal and is
home to a restaurant, café, performance space
and a deck.
In 2008, the Rough Guide named the Imperial
War Museum North as one of the top ten English
buildings of the last 100 years, the British
Construction Industry named it Building of the Year
(2003) and the list of awards goes on.
An award-winning building warrants an awardwinning
approach to producing events and the
team and the facilities for hosting meetings,
conferences and corporate celebrations at the
museum are both exciting and unique. With 360
degree HD cinematic wallpapers and a fantastic
technical team, bespoke digital wallpapers can
be created to provide an impressive backdrop.
The museum also has its own themes for an
event organiser to choose from, including a winter
wonderland, enchanted garden and Art Deco to
name a few.

Beautiful Buildings for Business
De Vere Selsdon Estate
Croydon, Surrey CR2 8YA
If one of the aspects of a beautiful building
includes the history of a property, then the UK has
an abundance of stately homes, sprawling country
mansions and manor houses. The De Vere
Selsdon Estate in Croydon is a delightful example.
Sat in 200 acres of grounds, parts of the building
can be traced back to 861AD when it was an
Anglo-Saxon Hall, a medieval estate of the Knights
Templar and more recently, a Victorian country
seat are just a few of its former lives.
Delegates attending an event here can't
fail to notice the sculptured high ceilings in
many of the meeting rooms. And with original
period features, including windows that tempt
with their views of manicured lawns that lead
to secret gardens, a beautiful spell is cast.
Located in the mansion house, The Cedar
Suite is an excellent example with its beautiful
bay windows, impressive ceiling and sparkling
chandeliers creating a striking setting for events
for up to 200 delegates.
In 1924 the estate was bought by London
business man and racing driver Alan Doble
Sanderson who transformed the mansion into
a luxury country house hotel. Architect Hugh
Mackintosh worked in stages to enlarge the
hotel adding an east and west wing and creating
the statement house that stands today with its
neo-Jacobean style and red-bricked façade.
Meeting rooms at De Vere Selsdon Estate have
kept with the times too with the latest in-built
audio visuals and smart technology including WiFi
with a maximum bandwidth of 100Mb. Nutritious
food for well-being and a dedicated conference
host further enhance the charm of holding an
event at this country beauty.

Beautiful Buildings for Business
Orchardleigh House
Frome, Somerset, BA11 2PH
The open space of a Victorian walled garden and
the charm of al fresco dining in an Italian garden
are certainly a magnet for brides and grooms
and Orchardleigh House in Somerset is equally
attractive for corporate events too. In fact, the
team at the 19th century stately home have been
welcoming event organisers and their guests and
delegates for over 15 years and it's easy to see why.
The house dates back to the 1800s and showcases
a combination of Elizabethan and French styles
often known as nouveau-riche. High ceilings
and period features set a scene of elegance and
grandeur and with unspoilt views across the
lake and the estate's 500 acres of parkland, it's a
beautiful retreat for a range of corporate events.
The main house features intimate spaces for
meetings for up to 80 delegates in the Ballroom or
75 people in the Morning Room or Library.
From the intimacy of the main house, it's hard to
resist the charm of the estate's Walled Garden. Ideal
for large conferences and celebrations, this special
space welcomes up to 300 guests for a banquet
and 600 delegates for a theatre-style function. The
hire includes exclusive use of the Italian Garden,
The Orangery and the large garden too.
Not just for business meetings, the estate boasts
its own 18-hole championship golf course and
further meeting room facilities in the golf and
country club are also available.

Beautiful Buildings for Business
Ashton Gate Stadium
Bristol, Somerset BS3 2EJ
There are times when the beauty of a building can
be attributed to its flexibility and functionality. It
can also be because of its power to bring people
together to support a common cause and it may
be due to the secondary affects a building can
bring to the local community.
Step forward Ashton Gate Stadium, home to
Bristol City Football Club and Bristol Bears rugby
teams. Rebuilt in 2016 with a £45 million budget,
the stadium is now firmly established as the
West Country's largest conference and events
venue. There is more than 5,000 square metres of
floor space with the impressive Lansdown Suite
hosting up to 850 guests for a dinner or 1,000
delegates for a theatre-style event.
For a smaller number, the executive boxes with
private balconies are perfect for a boardroom
meeting or a sports themed corporate event.
Linking the three main stands is a horseshoe
shaped concourse that offers impressive
exhibition or team-building space. Alternatively,
the Sports Bar and Grill Mezzanine provide a
perfect option for an exclusive reception on nonmatch
days.
With further exciting plans for the expansion of
the site and a strong community programme,
flexibility, functionality and success certainly
makes this Bristol venue a beauty in our eyes.
19
The Civic

The Civic is available to hire on a daily and hourly basis and event organisers have the expertise of the specialist
team at the venue to help create a memorable meeting, conference or celebration that takes centre stage.
Catering here is equally impressive and event organisers can choose to have mid-morning meeting snacks, a rustic

A Balanced Meeting
of Minds
The benefits of a work place wellness programme
are well documented with organisations
reporting improved productivity and employee
retention, less illness and a reduction in work
related injuries. Healthy employees equal a
healthy business so when it's time to host the
company's conference, meeting or next event,
consider striking a balance of mindfulness along
with a delegate's physical and emotional health
too. Through introducing a few small changes
throughout the day, a productive meeting
with energised and enthusiastic attendees
isn't a challenge. And the company's wellness
programme stays on track to deliver its goals.
29
Location is always such an important factor
when deciding on where to host an event so
for the sake of a delegate's mind and emotions
don't make the journey getting there a test! A
venue with good transport links and parking
is better than a delegate feeling like they've
embarked on a mystery tour of Milton Keynes!
Consider a venue's proximity to local attractions
too; for delegates on 24-hour or longer
residential stays, being able to wander off for
some self exploration and leisure time in a new
location is a real positive.
One of the simplest solutions for bringing
wellness into the meeting room is to actually
swap the meeting around the boardroom table
for a walking meeting! For the event organiser it's
easy to schedule into the day. For the delegates
involved it will encourage them to think, develop
interpersonal relationships and be open to new
ideas. Walking meetings improve the circulation
of delegates which in turn increases energy
levels and endorphins. If there's conflict between
people, they are more likely to calmly discuss
their issues while walking together compared to
a face-off round the table.
Gilwell Park
There are plenty of apps for recording so
keeping an accurate account of the meeting
isn't a problem and it will eliminate the use of
paper too. On the downside, walking meetings
work best with people walking aside each other
and in small groups so marching the whole
organisation outside is not going to bring the
best results!
30
A Balanced Meeting of Minds
Doubletree By Hilton Cheltenham
If a walking meeting isn't conducive, consider
including time in the schedule for a walk.
Delegates who take the time to get some fresh
air and move around are more likely to avoid any
post lunch slump.
Bounce Old Street
With mindfulness becoming more and more
mainstream there is a rising trend for meditation
and yoga sessions before everyone gets down
to the business of the day. Studies are showing
that meditation is helping people to retain
information, sleep better and become more
creative and productive so if a group meditation
session isn't on the agenda consider turning a
break-out room into a quiet space for delegates
to go to in between meetings and during breaks.
31
Over the last few years, many venues and hotels
have placed a lot of thought and creativity in
developing their event catering. Taking the
wellness of delegates and focusing on the
importance nutrition plays on mental health,
chefs are creating menus to improve the energy,
mood and focus of delegates. Look for the Food
for the Brain national accreditation to be sure
dietary requirements are in tune with your
company's wellness programme.
And don't forget team-building activities and
a hotel's gym and spa facilities can all play an
important part in a delegate's health too.
If you're ready for a more mindful meeting, take a look at some of our top picks for 2020.
