November 2019
Dear Friends,
A lot has happened over the past year. The daily
bombardment of news, events, triumphs and tragedies have been
staggering. If it feels like we’re living in a different world now,
well, that’s because we are.
Just over one year ago we gathered at the JCC to honor
the 11 lives stolen in a murderous rage at the Tree of Life
synagogue in Pittsburgh. Since then, other heinous acts of hate
Light is especially appreciated after the
dark.
– Hasdai, Ben ha-Melekh ve-ha-Nazir
and antisemitism
have peppered our
consciousness.
Unfortunately, the
recent rise in antisemitism is real. According to the Anti-
Defamation League, antisemitic incidents have surged nearly 60
percent in 2017 over 2016.
To combat this rise in hate, our community must continue
working closely together. We need to remain vigilant in our
processes and protocols. We must continue spreading love and
light. Because now, more than ever, it is crucial to have our
institutions thriving.
The JCC is committed to providing a safe and comfortable
place for everyone in our community. We continue to be
proactive when it comes to enhancing our security. Through
adversity, our mission has been reinforced and made stronger
than ever before. Our presence is now even more essential to
our community. Because it is not only about the services that
we provide, it’s about our presence and our need and right to
exist. Our light must shine bright for all to see and recognize as
representing the strength of our Jewish community. We are the
place where everyone belongs.
We have many strengths and we are counted upon by many.
We support hundreds of local working families with quality
childcare and seniors with our kosher meal program. Hundreds
of children each year experience our summer camps—one of the
largest and most respected in Onondaga County.
During this time of year, the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center is once again seeking your support. We are
truly grateful for how our community has stood with us over
the past couple of years. But the reality is we can always use the
support. Your past contributions have enabled us to meet the
needs of our members and neighbors. We once again look to
your generosity as we seek to maintain our key place within the
community. Please remember that when you give to the JCC you
provide a gift that will last throughout the year.
Help us continue our long tradition of serving the diverse
needs of our community. Your generous donation will positively
impact many lives. Please make a tax-deductible contribution
to the JCC today. The strength of our institutions and the light
that we create is one of the best ways to fight hate.
Sincerely,
Marci Erlebacher

Supporting Your Center
Your continued financial
contributions, gifts, grants and
endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger
community six days per week,
year round. Funds raised are
critical to daily operations, special
programming, future development
and improvements, and
scholarships and financial aid.
Matching gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
matching gift programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor the
memory of a loved one, the JCC welcomes
tax-deductible gifts to one of our many
endowment or special funds. (See the
tributes on page 34.) The JCC will
send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
End-of-Year Donation
Designate your United Way
donation to support the JCC
If you participate in the United Way
Community Campaign where you work
or as an individual donor, please consider
designating all or part of your gift to the
JCC of Syracuse. This can easily be done
on the back of your pledge card. Your
generous contribution to the JCC through
the United Way donor program will go a
long way in supporting your JCC.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Public support is imperative to the JCC of Syracuse’s survival. The center depends
on these donations for a full 7% of its annual budget. We recently mailed out
our end-of-year campaign letters
requesting your generous support.
For your convenience, a copy of this
letter is reprinted on page 3 along
with the form to use for making a taxdeductible
end-of-year contribution if
you haven’t already done so. No gift
is too small and all donations to the
JCC are greatly appreciated!
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 25) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.

Homeward bound
By Rabbi Yehoshua Zehavi
Temple Adath Yeshurun
Long before Simon and Garfunkel’s
evocative lyrics, our people described
the aching desire to be home. Every year,
Torah tells of a journey to the Promised
Land that fails to conclude. On the holiday
of Simhat Torah, after we read Moses’
death at the end of Torah, we turn right
back to the beginning of Creation rather
than travel with Joshua into the homeland.
In a similar way, the festivals reenact
the Exodus (Passover), revelation at Mt.
Sinai (Shavu’ot), and our wanderings
(Sukkot). None of them mark our arrival
home. Our daily prayers eloquently express
our longing to have the experience and
reality of home and homeland restored.
We all want, need, an experience of
home, of belonging to the place we are
right now. It is painful to live without it.
Now, as the days have grown so short, as
so much of our time is bathed in darkness,
winter invites us to seek a sense of home
within ourselves. Rather than searching
and traveling, we are encouraged to hunker
down, to be with ourselves in the dark and
stillness, and to find calm and grounding
within ourselves.
As we do so, we find an awareness of
belonging that is part of us and that we
can take with us. We are then beckoned
back out again to bring that feeling to all
the parts of our lives that we share with
others. Whether at work, school, the JCC,
synagogue, or any of the other spaces that
house community, we bring a sense of
at-homeness with us and meet others with
an offer of joining us there.
Wishing you light in the darkness and a
sense of home even in wandering.
Free community Chanukah party December 15
It’s almost that time again to enjoy some
good family friendly fun and food that’s
sure to brighten up a cold Syracuse winter
day. This year’s community Chanukah
party will be held on Sunday, December 15
from noon – 3 pm in the Sam Pomeranz
Jewish Community Center’s Schayes
Family Gymnasium. The free event,
sponsored by the Jewish Federation of
Central New York and JCC of Syracuse,
will feature lots of games, activities, food
and fun for the whole family to welcome in
the Chanukah season.
“Last year’s community Chanukah
party at the JCC was a huge success,” said
Michael Balanoff, president/CEO of the
Jewish Federation of Central New York. “It
was so much fun for everyone and we got
rave reviews about the new format. This
year we’ve got another great lineup of fun
activities for families to enjoy the start of
Chanukah.”
The community Chanukah party will
feature a variety of fun activities such as

face painting, a bounce house, Chanukah
crafts, games, balloon animals, a photo
booth, entertainment, and more. The
lineup of light refreshments will include
such classic favorites as
latkes, jelly doughnuts,
apple sauce, mini bagels
and fresh fruit.
“We’re delighted
to once again host the
community Chanukah
party,” said Marci
Erlebacher, JCC executive
director. “It’s always
great to partner with
the Jewish Federation of
CNY and we’re once again looking forward
to another festive event for the entire
community. We truly appreciate everyone
who has been involved in helping to make
this another spectacular gathering.”
Reservations for the community
Chanukah party are not necessary and
all are welcome. For more information,

Bands sought for 2020 JCC Battle of the Bands
The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center is on a mission to reboot its high
school Battle of the Bands competition.
After having to cancel the show last
January due to a snow storm, the JCC is
looking to come back next year bigger
and better than ever. To do so, the JCC
of Syracuse is seeking some serious high
school rockers to step up!
The JCC is putting out the call for rock
and other musical groups to play in its
upcoming Battle of the Bands concert. In
addition to bragging rights the winning
band will receive $200 cash, eight hours
of studio time at More Sound Recording
Studio in Syracuse and $200 to perform at
Winter Fair 2020 on Sunday, Feb. 9. The
Battle of the Bands entry form is available
online at www.jccsyr.org and at the JCC’s
main entrance reception desk. Registration
is $40 per band. The deadline to enter is
Jan. 7, 2020.
“We’re looking for bands who want to
play their hearts out in order to try and
win some really cool prizes,” said Amy
Bisnett, JCC associate director of children’s
programming. “This fun and unique event
offers a safe, inviting place for teens to play
in front of a crowd. After having to skip
last year’s show, we can’t wait to rock the
2020 Battle of the Bands.”
The friendly
Battle of the Bands
competition is
exclusively for
high school bands
and will be held
on Saturday, Jan.
18, 2020 at 7 p.m.
at the JCC of
Syracuse, 5655
Thompson Rd.,
DeWitt. All bands
entering the JCC
Battle of the Bands
competition must
have a majority
of its members
enrolled full-time
at a local high
school. Each band will have 30 minutes to
play and wow the crowd on Jan. 18.
The Battle of the Bands started in
2002 and has drawn bands from all over
Central New York. The shows are filled
with quality talent and get the house
rocking. Classic rock band Churches and
Graveyards from Marcellus Sr. High School
won the JCC Battle of the Bands the last
time it was held in 2018.
Admission to the Battle of the Bands
show on Jan. 18 is $10 and open to the

Early Childhood Development Program
How Young Children Learn
Much of what children learn and do in
an early childhood program doesn’t come
home in a backpack. Young children
learn best through hands-on and direct
interactive experiences. This type of
learning happens through play and
exploration.
The Jerome and Phyllis Charney Early
Childhood Development Program uses the
Creative Curriculum paired with the NYS
Early Learning Guidelines, using a Reggio
Emilia inspired approach to learning.
The Reggio Emilia Approach is an
innovative and inspiring approach to
early childhood education which values
the child as strong, capable, resilient and
rich with wonder and knowledge. Every
child brings with them deep curiosity and
potential, and this innate curiosity drives
their interest to understand their world
and their place within it.
REGGIO-INSPIRED
CREATIVE CURRICULUM

Curriculum for infants, toddlers

There is an emphasis on the following

science.
• Dramatic play
• Blocks

Happy Chanukah!
December brings with it Chanukah, the “Festival of Lights,” and our classroom
Chanukah parties that have become a favorite ECDP tradition! Our Chanukah
parties will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19 for rooms 2, 7, 8, A and B. The boys
and girls will be eating potato lakes and jelly doughnuts. Songs will be sung,
dreidels will be spun, candles on the menorah will be lit and stories of brave
Maccabees told. Each child will also receive a specially decorated goodie bag
filled with a dreidel, Chanukah stickers and chocolate gelt to take home.
If your child will not be scheduled to attend our Dec. 19 Chanukah Party, you
may pay for extra time if space is available. Otherwise, parents may bring in
their child and STAY WITH THEM for the duration of the party. NYS licensing
regulations requires a specific student/teacher ratio be maintained at all
times in every classroom. Ratios vary according to age. Thank you for your
understanding and cooperation with this matter.

Early Childhood Development Program
Winter Vacation Camp
The Early Childhood Development
Program will be closed Dec. 24, 2019
through Jan. 1, 2020 for winter break.
There will be a vacation camp offered
Dec. 24–31 for our working parents who
need extended-day and full-day childcare.
The teachers who will be caring for
children that week may NOT be your
child’s regular teachers.
The winter vacation camp is subject to
minimum enrollment. The fee is $50 per
day. Please look for the registration form
in your child’s mailbox. We cannot accept
registration forms after Dec. 10 due to staff
scheduling.
Preschool Book Fair
You’re invited! We look forward to seeing
you at our annual Scholastic Preschool
Book Fair which will be held Jan. 13–17,
2020 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the JCC’s
Early Childhood wing.
Our book fair is the perfect way to
update your home library at half the cost!
Many of our parents love to purchase
books for their child’s classroom. To make
this easier for you, please look for the
specially marked book bins at the checkout
which contains the wish list of books
for classroom libraries. Your child will
be able to place a special sticker inside
the book that lets the teacher know who
purchased it for the classroom. Please note
that purchasing a book from the wish bin
is optional and not required. The Early
Childhood Development Program greatly
appreciates all wish bin books that are
purchased.
PJ Library
The JCC has partnered with the PJ Library
(PJ for pajamas) which visits our program
monthly. Children are encouraged to wear
their pajamas to school on PJ Library days!
The PJ Library coordinator reads stories,
sings songs and plans activities with the
children. The program offers free, highquality
Jewish books and music each
month to children ages six months to eight
years all across North America to parents
raising Jewish children.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Communication between parents and
teachers is an important part of our
program. During the school year teachers
are making observations and documenting
learning to guide instruction and promote
success in all areas of development. We
look forward to sharing it with you during
the parent-teacher conferences that will
be held Jan. 6–17. Please look for the
sign-up sheet outside the office. A second
conference will be scheduled in May.
GRAND EVENT
Grandparents or other special people
are invited to have lunch with their
preschooler! After lunch and a special story
all special guests are invited to shop for
books from our book fair.
Save the date! Our Grand Event will be
held as follows:
• Jan. 16 – Classrooms 5, 7, 8
• Jan. 17 – Classrooms A, B, 2
Look for the invitation in your child’s
mailbox.
Purim Parade
We will hold our annual Purim Parade on
March 8 at 9:15 a.m. in the gymnasium.
Parents are invited to attend and children
may wear their costumes to school.

martial arts and the wisdom of the healing arts.

multiple levels of participation uses bands, magic
circles, stability balls and BOSUs. Mostly done on a

ALL FITNESS LEVELS
Balance & Bone Density
An integrated balance training and bone density
building class. Also helps address fall reduction and
prevention as well as postural stability.
Body Sculpting
Use external weight, resistance or one’s own body
weight to tone muscles; increase strength, stability
and metabolism; and strengthen bones and joints.
Cardio Dance
A combination of various dance styles set to Latin and
Pop music.
Dancing Boomers
This “flashback” to a bygone era features low-impact
dancing to show tunes and pop music.
Group Cycle
Our Keiser M3 Plus bikes bring the mountain-biking
experience indoors to safely deliver a full-body
workout. Unlike other cycling classes which just work
the legs, this cutting-edge class works the whole body.
Line Dancing
Get moving with line dancing—a fun way to exercise!
Line dance to all varieties of music using a series of
basic steps and patterns of all dance styles. Challenge
yourself as the dances change direction and move
around the room.
Family Sports & Fitness Center
• All classes are free for Fitness members
(except Tap and Ballroom Dance).
• $10 per class for non-Fitness members.
Sun-style Tai Chi movements to help reduce stress,
improve breathing and develop balance, mobility and
body awareness. All ability levels are welcome and you
don’t need to be diagnosed with arthritis to participate.
TaijiFit
TaijiFit is not just an exercise—it’s an experience!
It’s about making fitness more graceful and holistic
through great music and great energy by combining
the best elements of fitness, meditation and the
ancient martial art of Taiji (Tai Chi). TaijiFit is
mindfulness in motion.
Yoga
A hybrid style drawing from Vinyasa, Lyengar and
Viniyoga that brings physical benefits by integrating
body and mind performance. Bring a towel, water
and we recommend that you bring your own Yoga
mat. Hatha Yoga focuses your mind on relaxation
through meditation, strengthening and stretching
exercises. Restorative Yoga helps you to deeply relax
your muscles and mind by slowing down and opening
your body through passive stretching and long holds.
Yogalates
This class is a fusion of Yoga and Pilates.
Muscle Sculpting
Instructors use barbells, free weights, bands and balls
to create the ultimate total body shaping class.
Step & Sculpt
A dynamic blend of step and cardiovascular activities
along with intervals of strength movements help
increase muscle tone and the body’s metabolism.
TRX Suspension Training
Free; $15 for non-Fitness members
• Registration required‐—call/stop by the Fitness desk
TRX (total body resistance exercise) utilizes a band
(two-handled nylon strap) to harness the power of
gravity and movement for body weight exercises.
The result is a mix of support and mobility targeting
strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, balance,
power and core stability. Express TRX is a more
modifiable version for all abilities.
WERQ Dance Fitness
This wildly addictive cardio dance workout is based on
the hottest dance music and can be modified for all
levels. WERQ (pronounced work) is a dance term that
means “own it.”
Zumba
A blood-pumping cardiovascular workout for all ages
set to a fusion of Latin and international music. A
variety of fast and slow rhythms help tone and sculpt
the body while you learn easy-to-follow dance steps.
Zumba Gold is the low-impact version for all levels.
