Willow Creek North Shore seeks to make

global impact during holiday season

This holiday season,

Willow Creek North Shore

in Glenview invites you

to be part of a faith community

with a vision that

extends beyond Sunday

morning. Throughout December,

the church will

host gatherings designed

to serve the local community,

provide space for

families to connect, support

fair trade retailers in

developing countries, and

share the peace and hope

they find in their faith.

“We are a church that

believes that our faith

calls us to be merciful,

kind, and compassionate,

and to serve and love the

people around us,” Pastor

Amy Mikal said. “The

holiday season is the perfect

time of year for us to

serve our neighbors here

on the North Shore and to

make an impact across the

globe.”

The first holiday event,

a Family Christmas Party,

will be held 9 a.m.-noon

Saturday, Dec. 7. Families

are invited to enjoy

hot chocolate, treats, music,

games, and more during

the open-house style

event. Families will also

have an opportunity to

give back to the community,

assembling gift packages

for residents at Glen

Oaks Nursing Home in

Northbrook.

All are invited to pack

Christmas gifts for prisoners

at 9 a.m. and 11:15

a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, during

services. Everyone in

attendance will pack a gift

for inmates who otherwise

might not receive a gift or

even a word of encouragement

during the holiday

season. Kaleb Wilcox, Associate

Pastor at Willow

Creek North Shore, said

he hopes the simple gift

brings prisoners joy this

Christmas.

“Jesus taught us to remember

the prisoners and

to serve those often forgotten

by society,” Wilcox

said. “We want to let

prisoners know that there’s

Holiday Catering from Simply Thai

and Simply Sushi & Co.

a church in Glenview that

remembers them and that

there is a God who loves

them.”

The church is also hosting

a fair trade market on

the morning of Sunday,

12/15 with Ten Thousand

Villages – a fair trade retailer

of artisan-crafted

items including, jewelry,

home décor, gifts, and

more. Attendees can purchase

gifts while also

supporting artisans and

entrepreneurs who are developing

a sustainable income

for themselves and

their families.

To complete their December

lineup, Willow

Creek North Shore will

host six Christmas services

focused on joy, peace,

hope, and faith. Each service

will include a time

of worship, opportunities

for prayer and reflection,

a message of hope, and

a chance to spend time

together as a community.

“In the middle of a full

and busy season, we want

to give families a space to

pause, take a breath, and

be reminded of the hope

and peace that is available

to each one of us,” Mikal

said. “No matter your faith

background, what you’ve

experienced in church in

the past, or how you’re

feeling about faith today,

there is a place here for

you.”

Christmas Services will

be held at Willow Creek

North Shore at 9 a.m.

and 11:15 a.m. Sunday,

Dec. 22, 6 p.m. Monday,

Dec. 23, and 1 p.m., 3:30

p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday,

Local mom celebrates 1 year as

spa owner with amazing holiday gifts

After years of working

long hours while raising

young kids, Northbrook

resident Leslie Lee decided

she was ready for

a change. It was time for

more work-life balance

and less stress. Well, what

could be less stressful than

a spa! She loved the idea of

providing a relaxing experience

as well as an affordable

way for people to take

better care of themselves.

So, she dove head first into

entrepreneurship, opening

Hand & Stone Massage

and Facial Spa in Northbrook

last December. It

hasn’t always been stress

free but the support of the

community and friends in

the area has made all the

difference. And to celebrate

the first year in business,

Hand & Stone is offering

a huge Buy One Get

One sale on gift cards this

Black Friday weekend!

After all, a growing trend

in holiday gift giving is

to create an “experience”

as a gift instead of giving

“stuff.” As we all strive to

reduce our physical footprint,

the well-intentioned

“stuff” we give others over

the holidays quickly adds

to the post-holiday clutter.

According to studies collected

by Joshua Becker,

THE expert on minimalism

and author of several

books on the topic:

The average family

gives or throws away over

200 pounds of clothes per

year.

54 percent of adults in

the US report being overwhelmed

with clutter and

78 percent have no idea

how to overcome it!

But “stuff” makes our

gift recipients happy,

right? Wrong.

Beyond reducing clutter,

giving experiences is

also good for the recipient.

According to research

reported in the Journal of

Psychological Science by

Thomas Gilovich of Cornell

University, experiences

provide more lasting

happiness than material

possessions. He speculates

that, “This is because we

adapt to physical things, so

even the nicest car or newest

phone becomes commonplace

after enough

time, while memories tend

to get fonder over time.”

So, this holiday season,

consider an experience gift

for everyone on your list

like a gift card from Hand

& Stone Massage and Facial

Spa in Northbrook.

Let your loved ones enjoy

a day of pampering. It’s

healthy and feels great.

This Black Friday weekend,

buy one gift card and

get one free! Avoid the long

lines and traffic by pre-ordering

your gift cards today.

Razny Jewelers creates beautiful pieces

with brilliant diamonds, precious metals

Forever is a long time

— until you’re in love.

Thereafter, hours pass like

seconds. A quick glance.

A knowing smile. Each

moment together is an opportunity

for an expression

of warm affection. Like

one single tile of a mosaic,

love turns eternity into

quick flashes forming the

beautiful whole of a new

forever.

For almost 70 years,

Razny Jewelers has listened

to the stories of

couples from all over Chicago

and beyond. Each is

unique and worth celebrating.

With these beautiful

bonds in mind, we were inspired

to create a selection

of engagement rings and

wedding bands reflecting

the everlasting brilliance

of true love.

It was essential to us

that, aside from being distinctive,

this exclusive collection

encompasses the

many styles and tastes of

today’s brides. We took

great care to guarantee

modern silhouettes shine

just as brilliantly as their

classic counterparts. The

most popular diamond

shapes and settings, with

a few outlier designs added

for variety, were all

skillfully formed by our

in-house design team.

It is a collection we

are proud to call Forever

by Razny. Forever

by Razny is currently on

display at our Highland

Park boutique in Chicagoland’s

North Shore

neighborhood.

Ingrid Razny shines a

light on the inspiration

behind each design.

“Beginning their lives

together, it is important

for a couple to have a

jeweler they can trust. A

new home, anniversaries,

and babies are only a few

of the many milestones

they’ll be celebrating for

generations to come. Look

to Forever by Razny as a

collection from which to

begin a beautiful and happy

friendship — between

our family and yours. Here

you’ll find your foreverring,

from your forever

jeweler.”

No two love stories are

the same, and the most important

jewelry you own

should reflect your unique

story. Forever by Razny is

made with only the most

brilliant diamonds and

precious metals, honoring

love’s individuality.

Schaefer’s Wines, Foods & Spirits has

been ‘setting the bar’ since 1936

A North Shore institution

as long as anybody

remembers, Schaefer’s

Wines, Foods & Spirits

ages like a treasure

bottled of wine. Located

on its iconic Old Orchard

and Gross Point Roads

corner, Schaefer’s is the

first stop when it’s time to

party, celebrate or commemorate.

And at the

holidays it’s a must stop!

Schaefer’s beverage

history dates back to the

John Schaefer tavern on

High Ridge in Wilmette

during to the late 1890s.

After prohibition, George

Schaefer operated the

Boundary Tavern at its

current location. Since

then, the store has garnered

a national reputation

for wines, foods

&, most importantly,

unparalleled service.

The store’s third generation

president, Anje

Schaefer Cluxton, comments:

“In an age of big

boxes, we stay true to

customer service excellence

combined with a

deep selection of wine,

beers and spirits. Our

celebrated food department,

with specialty delicacies,

artisan cheeses

and amazing homemade

soups, dips and spreads,

rounds out the offerings.”

For generations, holiday

parties officially begin

when the Schaefer’s

truck arrives in the driveway

with libations and

those stacked boxes of

glassware. Enjoy free delivery,

fully credited returns

and, yes, even free

loaner glassware! Every

budget, and palette, is accommodated.

It’s a stress

free holiday. “I’m here

for you, we will take care

of everything,” says Dan

Madden, Schaefer’s goto

party guy for over 30

years.

A holiday gift from

Schaefer’s, packed in

their signature boxes,

says it all. It brings a

smile to every recipient.

By phone, web or in

person, Schaefer’s veteran

team of experts is

peerless. Whether it’s a

professional gift list, or

a thirsty parent, they’re

ready for you. Need

something special? Select

a cellar wine and ask

about bottle engraving.

Relax with the experts!

They’re part of our local

history and “setting the

Torino Ramen introduces experimental dishes to popular fare

The No. 1 ramen place

in the North Shore is lively

open and Torino just completed

its new expansion.

Torino Ramen is a Japanese

spot known for its variety

of savory hearty ramen

noodle bowls and other

classic Japanese gourmet

dishes. Torino Ramen is

proud to announce our expansion

of Bar Torino now

being open. The expansion

next door includes a much

larger seating area along

with a new full-service bar

including beer, wine, cocktails,

spirits and of course

sake! Come by after work

for a quick bowl of Ramen

and a fresh sip of beer.

We are also excited to

announce our Kaiseki Torino

Experiential Dinner

that several couples have

already enjoyed claiming,

“One of the best dining

experiences I have had in

over a year.” The goal with

our Kaiseki Torino dinner

is to allow our customers

to have full authentic Japanese

experience with a variety

of platters that would

take the traditional hallmarks

of Kaiseki for the

master Japanese progressive

dinner experience.

It’s truly a one of a kind

food experience. We hope

to have you join us for a

night of Kaiseki Torino,

the Japanese progressive

dining experience, featuring

a seasonally-inspired

menu prepared by Kaiseki

Master Chef Yuji Hayashi

and served in an intimate

candlelit setting.

Torino Ramen is genuinely

the best bowl of ramen

outside of Tokyo,

Japan. We hope to see

as many of you guys in

the near future! Come

stay warm with us during

Ramen Season! We are

delighted for you to check

out Torino Ramen, our

new Bar Torino, and our

Kaiseki Torino Events.

Torino Ramen opened in

early 2017 with three Japanese

natives who shared

the common goal. It was

created with one mission in

mind to create authentic and

hearty ramen for the Windy

City’s North Shore. At Torino,

we have always taken

pride in what we make as

it represents our childhood

and where we came from

in Japan. Ultimately bringing

the taste and feel of

Japenese culture over to the

suburbs of Chicago.

Torino is the brainchild

of Chikako and her partners,

Tomoko and Chika,

who fell in love with Japan

and its vibrant ramen

scene. Torino’s iconic flavorful

taste started with

recipes created in their

family kitchens and they

perfected the perfect noodle

bowl through a dozen

customizations of personal

tastes and preferences

keeping the traditions of

authentic food made with

love and integrity.

Torino and all other requests,

Footwear, outerwear and clothing

featured at Forest Bootery in Lake Forest

One of today’s oldest footwear

dynasties in the nation began at

the Forest Bootery in Lake Forest

Market Square and is celebrating

its 70th year. Second generation

owners, “the Girls,” Cristina

and Cara Garrison grew up in the

fashion footwear industry learning

at an early age from their parents.

After graduating college the

pair came home and found their

father was planning on selling

the store. Not wanting to let their

heritage go in 1996 they became

the fourth owners of the Forest

Bootery that was established in

November of 1949.

“I remember going to New

York with our father when I was

around 13,” Cara Garrison said,

“and meeting some of the great

designers like Ralph Lauren,

Joan & David Helpern and I remember

Sam & Libby Edelman

when they were first launching

their line in the 1980s. We would

help pick out styles that we liked

and my dad would listen to us for

teen direction.” That was what it

was like for the girls growing

up in a family business. Cristina

remembers “when the store

had parties we had to be there to

serve refreshments.” Historically

every downtown across America

had a store that sold family

shoes and leather goods called a

“Bootery.” Fast forward, today,

the Forest Bootery’s assortment

is much more than just shoes for

the family. When the legendary

outerwear store, the Outdoorsman,

closed its doors they

acquired the brand The North

Face, in the past few years they

started carrying women’s ready

to wear. “It’s about having what

our customers need so they don’t

have to shop somewhere other

than their home downtown” says

Cristina “we are a local landmark

and a leader. We put in

clothing because the tenant mix

in the Square was missing this,

well, and it’s super fun to buy.”

What’s going to happen with

the Forest Bootery? Cara says

“We are just not sure with closed

store fronts on Market Square

and online footwear sales climbing,

it’s true, our Lake Forest location

has been struggling. Consumers

have evolved and don’t

always shop local before clicking

online, it’s just too easy. Its

hurting retail and I worry gone

will be the days of going out

shopping. Shop less in stores and

then stores will have to carry less

and so goes the cycle. We plan

on continuing our search of finding

that special niche online to

help preserve our brick and mortar

footprint.” The “Bootery” is

rich in heritage and its flagship

location is located in Historic

Market Square Lake Forest Illinois.

They have been serving

the communities of Lake Forest

and Lake Bluff for seventy

years. Their Libertyville location

opened its doors in 2005.
