Make A Change,

Charity Hockey Game

It happened more than five

decades ago, but Mike Laughton

remembers the moment like it was

yesterday. A member of the Oakland

Golden Seals in 1967, the kid from

Nelson was playing in his first game

in the fabled Montreal Forum. In

his rookie season, the young centre

made his way to the ice in the most

sacred shrine in hockey against a

team that won six Stanley Cups in

nine years between 1965 and 1973.

Based in Nelson, Make A Change

Canada is one of just over 200 charities

in Canada accredited under the

Imagine Canada Standards Program.

The organization provides

online employment, self-employment,

and skills training to people

who face barriers to employment.

Clients include people facing all

types of challenges from youth and

single parents, to those living with

a disability or chronic health issue,

FROM THE GAR CREEK WATER USERS

On July 12, 2012, a massive mudslide destroyed our water system.

Fast forward to March 14, 2017 when we received a New

Build Canada Fund grant for two thirds of the money required

to build a new water supply system outside the defined hazard

zones. With the support of the RDCK and our own community,

we raised the other third, and completed the new water system

on September 30, 2019.

Now it’s time to say

THANKS!

The Gar Creek Water Users Association wants to thank the

federal and provincial governments, Andy Shadrack, former

Director of Area ‘D’ and Aimee Watson, the current Director of

Area ‘D’ and chair of the RDCK. Without their constant support,

and the support of all the directors of the Regional District

of Central Kootenay, this project would never have happened.

We would also like to thank all the local contractors and businesses

who helped us complete this project on time and under

budget: Sean Brenton, Lily Schell, Geoff Scott, Dave Sicotte,

Clint Carlson, CJ Logging, Ian McKinnon and Kaslo Building

Supplies.

A special thank you goes out to Rik Valentine, whose expertise

and attention to detail made all the difference; to his stalwart

crew of local workers who did most of the heavy lifting; and to

Jane Ballantyne, who mentored our accounting with grace and

patience.

And finally, we want to thank the many volunteers who helped

us on this project; too many to mention, but you know who you

are. Between volunteers and the GCWUA executive there were

over 2500 volunteer hours put in on this project.

EV Charging

cont’d from pg 4

In the first quarter of 2019, six percent

of total vehicle sales and 15% of new

passenger vehicle sales in BC were zeroemission

electric vehicles. Under the

provincial Zero Emissions Vehicles Act,

10% of new vehicle sales are required

to be electric by 2025, 30% by 2030 and

100% by 2040. More and more hotel

guests will be looking for EV charging,

since if you’re travelling, you basically

need a hotel with EV charging.

The Nelson Legion Branch 51 would like to thank the Nelson Community once again for its strong

support at the Cenotaph this year. It is always so heartwarming to see so many people come out in

Remembrance. Special thanks to our many volunteers and cadets who make the Day of Remembrance

possible each year. Hundreds of hours are spent on the poppy campaign, organizing the wreaths,

making the food and organizing the parade.

A big thank you to:

Save-On Foods, West Coast Grill, and Kootenay Industrial Supply

for supplying the food and all we needed to feed

the adults and children on Remembrance Day.

Thank you to:

Ben Tanshack, the Riondel Community, Kootenay Industrial Supply,

Hume School, Trafalgar School and everyone else who so generously donated

funds to the Legion and our veterans’ programs.

Thank you to all the individuals and organizations that purchase wreaths

and lay them at the cenotaph each year. Your support is invaluable.

Thank you to:

The Nelson Police Department and the City of Nelson Public Works

Department for being so willing to offer a hand.

What Child is This

What Child is this, who laid to rest,

On Mary’s lap is sleeping?

Whom angels greet with anthems

sweet,

While shepherds watch are

keeping?

This, this is Christ, the King,

whom shepherds guard and angels

sing;

Haste, haste to bring him laud,

The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,

come peasant, king to won Him;

The King of kings salvation brings,

Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise the song on high,

The Virgin sings her lullaby;

Joy, joy for Christ is born,

The babe, the Son of Mary.

Frosty the Snowman

Frosty the snowman was a jolly

happy soul,

With a corncob pipe and a button

nose

And two eyes made out of coal.

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale,

they say,

He was made of snow but the

children know

how he came to life one day.

There must have been some

magic in that

Old silk hat they found.

For when they placed it on his head

He began to dance around.

O, Frosty the snowman

Was alive as he could be,

And the children say he could laugh

And play just the same as you

and me.

Thumpetty thump thump,

Thumpety thump thump,

Look at Frosty go.

Thumpetty thump thump,

Thumpety thump thump,

Over the hills of snow.

Frosty the snowman knew

The sun was hot that day,

So he said, “Let’s run and

We’ll have some fun

Now before I melt away.”

Down to the village,

With a broomstick in his hand,

Running here and there all

Around the square saying,

Catch me if you can.

He led them down

the streets of town

Right to the traffic cop.

And he only paused a

moment when

He heard him holler “Stop!”

For Frosty the snow man

Had to hurry on his way,

But he waved goodbye saying,

“Don’t you cry,

I’ll be back again some day.”

Here We Come A-Carolling

Here we come a-carolling,

Among the leaves so green;

Here we come a-wand’ring,

So fair to be seen.

Chorus:

Love and joy come to you,

and to you glad Christmas too;

And God bless you

And send you a happy New Year,

And God send you a happy

New Year.

We are not daily beggars

That beg from door to door;

But we are neighbours’ children

Whom you have seen before.

Chorus:

Love and joy come to you,

and to you glad Christmas too;

And God bless you

And send you a happy New Year,

And God send you a

happy New Year.

The First Noel

The first Noel the angels did say

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields

as they lay:

In fields where they lay keeping their

sheep

On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Chorus:

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star

Shining in the east beyond them far,

And to the earth it gave great light,

And so it continued both day and

night.

Chorus

And by the light of that same star,

Three Wise Men came from country far,

To seek for a King was their intent,

And to follow the star wherever it

went.

Chorus

This star drew night to the

northwest.

O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,

And there it did go and stay

Right over the place where Jesus lay.

Chorus

Jingle Bell Rock

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Snowin’ and blowin’ up bushels of

Now, the jingle hop has begun

Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time

Dancin’ and prancin’ in Jingle Bell

What a bright time, it’s the right time

To rock the night away

Jingle bell time is a swell time

To go glidin’ in a one-horse sleigh

Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your

feet

Jingle around the clock

Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin’ feet

That’s the jingle bell rock, yeah

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring

Snowin’ and blowin’ up bushels of

fun

Now, the jingle hop has begun

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell twist

Huron Carol

‘Twas in the moon of wintertime

When all the birds had fled

That mighty Gitchi Manitou

Sent angel choirs instead

Before their light the stars grew dim

And wandering hunters heard the

hymn

Chorus:

Jesus your King is born, Jesus is

born. In excelsis gloria

Within a lodge of broken bark

The tender Babe was found

A ragged robe of rabbit skin

Enwrapp’d His beauty round

And as the hunter braves

drew nigh

The angel song rang loud and high

Chorus:

The earliest moon of wintertime

Is not so round and fair

As was the ring of glory

On the helpless infant there

The chiefs from far before him knelt

With gifts of fur and beaver pelt

Chorus:

O children of the forest free

O sons of Manitou

The Holy Child of earth and heaven

Is born today for you

Come kneel before the radiant Boy

Who brings you beauty, peace and joy

Chorus:

Hark! The Herald

Angels Sing

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled.”

Joyful, all ye nations, rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;

With th’angelic host proclaim,

“Christ is born in Bethlehem.”

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ, by highest heav’n adored;

Christ, the everlasting Lord;

Late in time behold Him come,

Offspring of the favoured one.

Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see;

Hail th’incarnate Deity,

Pleased, as man with men to

dwell,

Jesus our Immanuel!

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of

Peace!

Hail! the Son of righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,

Ris’n with healing in His wings.

Mild He lays His glory by,

Born that man no more may die:

Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

The Christmas Song

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,

Jack Frost nipping at your nose.

Yuletide carols being sung by a choir

And folks dressed up like Eskimos...

Everybody knows a turkey and some

Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa’s on his way.

He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies

on his sleigh.

And every mother’s child is gonna spy

To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I’m offering this simple phrase

To kids from one to ninety-two...

many ways,

It Came Upon

A Midnight Clear

It came upon a midnight clear,

That glorious song of old,

From angels bending near the

earth

To touch their harps of gold;

“Peace on the earth, goodwill to

men

From heaven’s all gracious king.”

The world in solemn stillness lay

To hear the angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife

The world has suffered long;

Beneath the angel-strain have

rolled

Two thousand years of wrong;

And men, at war with men, hear

not

The words of peace they bring.

O hush the noise ye men of strife

And hear the angels sing.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

Chorus:

For auld lang syne,

For auld lang syne.

We’ll take a cup

O Little Town of Bethlehem

O little town of Bethlehem,

How still we see thee lie;

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

The silent stars go by:

Yet in thy dark streets shineth

The everlasting Light;

the hopes and fears of all the years

Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary;

And gathered all above,

While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Their watch of wond’ring love.

O morning stars, together

Proclaim the holy birth;

and praises sing to God, the king,

And peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently,

The wondrous gift is giv’n!

So God imparts to human hearts

The blessing of his heav’n.

No ear may hear His coming,

But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive Him,

still,

The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,

Descend to us, we pray;

Cast out our sin, and enter in,

Be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels

The great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us,

Our Lord Emmanuel.

Silver Bells

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks,

dressed in holiday style.

In the air there’s a feeling of

Christmas.

Children laughing, people passing,

Meeting smile after smile,

And on ev’ry street corner you hear:

Chorus:

Silver bells, silver bells,

It’s Christmas time in the city.

Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,

Soon it will be Christmas day.”

Strings of street lights, even

stoplights,

Blink a bright red and green,

As the shoppers rush home

with their treasures.

Hear the snow crunch,

see the kids bunch,

This is Santa’s big scene,

And above all the bustle you hear:

Silver bells, silver bells,

It’s Christmas time in the city.

Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,

Soon it will be Christmas day.

Twelve Days

of Christmas

On the first day of Christmas

My true love sent to me

A partridge in a pear tree.

On the second day of Christmas

My true love sent to me

Two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

(Repeat through #12, adding one

line to each verse)

3. Three French hens

4. Four calling birds

5. Five golden rings

6. Six geese a-laying

7. Seven swans a-swimming

8. Eight maids a-milking

9. Nine ladies dancing

10. Ten lords a-leaping

11. Eleven pipers piping

12. Twelve drummers drumming.

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow

In a one-horse open sleigh

O’er the fields we go

Laughing all the way

Bells on bobtail ring

Making spirits bright

What fun it is to laugh and

sing

A sleighing song tonight!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way.

Oh! what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh.

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way;

Oh! what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh.

White Christmas

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas

Just like the ones I used to know.

Where the treetops glisten and

children listen

To hear sleigh bells in the snow.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas

With every Christmas card I write.

May your days be merry and bright,

And may all your Christmases be white.

Rudolf the Red-nosed

Reindeer

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer

had a very shiny nose.

And if you ever saw him,

you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer

used to laugh and call him names.

They never let poor Rudolph

join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve

Santa came to say:

“Rudolph with your nose so bright,

won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Then all the reindeer loved him

as they shouted out with glee,

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,

you’ll go down in history!

Carol Of The Bells

Hark! how the bells

Sweet silver bells

All seem to say,

“Throw cares away.”

Christmas is here

Bringing good cheer

To young and old

Meek and the bold

Ding, dong, ding, dong

That is their song

With joyful ring

All caroling

One seems to hear

Words of good cheer

From ev’rywhere

Filling the air

Oh how they pound,

Raising the sound,

O’er hill and dale,

Telling their tale,

Gaily they ring

While people sing

Songs of good cheer

Christmas is here

Merry, merry, merry,

merry Christmas

Merry, merry, merry,

merry Christmas

On, on they send

On without end

On, on they send

On without end

Their joyful tone

To ev’ry home

God Rest You

Merry Gentlemen

God rest you merry gentlemen,

Let nothing you dismay.

Remember Christ our Saviour

Was born on Christmas Day,

To save us all from Satan’s power

When we have gone astray.

O tidings of comfort and joy,

Comfort and joy.

O tidings of comfort and joy.

Now to the Lord sing praises,

All you within this place,

And with true love and brotherhood

Each other now embrace.

This Holy tide of Christmas,

all others doth efface.

O tidings of comfort and joy,

Comfort and joy.

O tidings of comfort and joy.

“Fear not then,” said the angel,

“Let nothing you afright,

This day is born a Saviour

Of a pure virgin bright,

To free all those who trust in Him

from Satan’s power and might.”

O tidings of comfort and joy,

Comfort and joy.

O tidings of comfort and joy.

Joy to the World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;

Let earth receive her King.

Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room,

And heav’n and nature sing,

And heav’n and nature sing,

And heav’n, and heav’n and nature

sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns;

Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills

and plains

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,

Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make His blessings

flow

Far as the curse is found,

Far as the curse is found,

Far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and

grace,

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness,

And wonders of his love,

And wonders of his love,

and wonders, and wonders of

His love.

Winter Wonderland

Sleigh bells ring, are you list’nin’?

In the lane snow is glist’nin.

A beautiful sight, we’re happy

tonight,

Walkin’ in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,

Here to stay is a new bird.

He sings a love song as we go

along,

Walkin’ in a a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a

snowman,

Then pretend that he is Parson

Brown.

He’ll say, “Are you married?”

We’ll say, “No man!,

but you can do the job when

you’re in town.”¸

Later on we’ll conspire,

As we dream by the fire,

To face unafraid the plans that

we made,

Walkin’ in a winter wonderland!

callie

Callie the calico cat is a beautiful 13-year-old spayed lady

who has adjusted well to her stay here. Quite the raconteur,

she has a story to tell everyone and insists that you listen.

She loves attention, getting pets, and head butting, and will

Daren, Neil (Laurie), Roy (Leah), Ina (Bruce)

MacNicol; grandchildren Michelle, Colette

(Lewis), Julie (Ryan), Dan (Shelley), Alecia

(Stephen), Kahle (Elijah), Rory (Eka), Lana

(Billy Joel); and 19 great-grandchildren.

Hilia married Vaino Honkanen in Vancouver

in 1943 and lived at a logging camp on

Vancouver Island for a couple of years. They

then moved to the small farm on Shutty Bench

near Kaslo, BC where they raised their five

children. Mom loved to work with her hands

Hilia Inez Honkanen

and excelled at anything she set her mind to.

She especially loved sewing and quilting, and

she won many awards for her ceramics. Her

great-grandchildren who affectionately

referred to her as “GG” (great-grandmother)

will remember her thoughtfulness in always

giving them sweets whenever she saw them.

She will be remembered for her no-nonsense

attitude towards life, and she attributed her

excellent health for most of her life to being

physically active.

Her family would like to thank the staff at

Shouldice Lodge for their kindness and the

medical staff at Rockyview Hospital for their

excellent care. Donations in her memory to

the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be

much appreciated.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Calgary

later in the spring of 2020.

Giving Tuesday

In an effort to balance the crazy

getting and spending of the holiday

season, philanthropic organizations

around the world have countered

with a special day that promotes giving.

This giving can be expressed in

many different ways and doesn’t need

to be limited to just one day during

the year. In our community you can

look for special occasions that benefit

local charities a Christmas concert

where the proceeds go to supporting

the local Food Hub, a community

dinner perhaps, or the many opportunities

to donate toward refugee relief.

That’s the monetary side of it. But

just as important are gifts of time and

talent that contribute to the welfare

of everyone in our community. We

know of music students who go to

seniors’ homes and extended care

units. Volunteers give generously

of their time and talents and are the

backbone of our community.

This is also the time of year when

people with surplus funds look for

ways to make tax deductible donations.

Community Foundations are

deliberately set up to receive tax

deductible donations which build

endowment funds that benefit communities

in perpetuity. Since 2014

every community in the Columbia

Basin is served by a Community

Foundation.
