Book club
A trio of brilliant books for the holidays
Oh my. Joy of joys! A new book
from Jojo Moyes, just in time for the
holidays. Inspired by a remarkable
true story, the book is described
as ‘the unforgettable journey of
five extraordinary women living in
extraordinary and perilous times’.
The Giver of Stars is the story of
Alice Wright, a woman who leaves
England for America, only to discover
that swapping the twitching curtains
of suburbia for being the wife of an
American businessman and living in
the wild mountains of Kentucky isn’t,
actually, the answer to her prayers.
Then she meets Margery O’Hara, a
woman who isn’t afraid of anything
or anyone. And a woman
on a mission! The pair, along with
three others, join up and, ignoring
obvious dangers and loads of social
disapproval, travel hundreds of miles
a week to deliver books to isolated
families. When a body is found in the
mountains, and one of the group
becomes a suspect, their newly
formed friendship is put to the test.
The Giver of Stars is unputdownable.
Penguin, R270
Ever since reading the marvellous Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight, we’ve
pounced on any new Alexandra Fuller with delight (unlike her mother, who
thinks they’re ‘dreadful’). Just released is Travel Light, Move Fast, a tribute to
Alexandra’s father, who died unexpectedly – and not with the drama the family
expected – in Budapest, ‘the poor man’s Paris’. Read in equal parts of envy and
horror – her parents launched from one calamity to the next, fuelled with gin
and in a haze of cigarette smoke, along with the children, a handful of dogs and
a collection of orange Le Creuset pots – the memoir jumps from present to past.
Alexandra tells of the lessons her father taught her. Lessons about life, love, loss
and tragedy. Lessons that led her to cope with the loss of her father, of the fallout
with her sister, and of the unbearable final bereavement she reveals in the final
chapter, when you may find yourself, as we did, holding the book further away
than normal, so as to distance yourself from the grief she pours into the pages.
Brilliantly written, heartbreaking, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Not much more
you need from a great read, really. Profile Books, R300 • If there was ever anyone as
glam as the marvellous Jackie Kennedy Onassis, it was her sister, Lee. One of the
most iconic women of her time – and the favourite of their rakish father, John
‘Black Jack’ Vernou Bouvier – she lived in the shadow of her older sister, their
mother’s favourite. Both had a keen eye for beauty – in fashion, design, painting,
music, dance, sculpture, poetry – and both were talented artists. Both loved prerevolutionary
Russian culture. Both adored the blinding sunlight, calm seas and
ancient olive groves of Greece. But the two, although extremely close, were hugely
competitive and their relationship included much rivalry and jealousy. When Jackie
died and her will was read, Lee discovered that cash bequests were left to family,
friends and staff, but nothing to her. ‘I have made no provision in this my Will for
my sister, Lee B. Radziwill, for whom I have great affection, because I have already
done so during my lifetime,’ it read. The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters by Sam Kashner
and Nancy Schoenberger, who had many candid interviews with Lee, explores the
tragic and glamorous lives of these two fascinating women. HarperCollins, R310.
Teaching
healthy habits
We chat to founder of Manna Café Tamlynn Welgemoed. She tells us about
creating an eco-friendly healthy eating hub for learners.
Former teacher, Tamlynn was in the educational sector for
seven years teaching various ages from foundation phase to
Grade 12’s. “Once my son, Kehann was born, I took a leap
of faith and decided to join my husband, Shannon, in his
construction company.
“The idea for the business started with Shannon’s enthusiasm for
supplying building material. He has vast knowledge and
experience within this field and his aim was to provide quality and reliable
services to our community. Our journey taught me the ins and outs of
the corporate sector and how to manage a staff component.
“Our involvement with the building of Trinityhouse Glenvista opened doors for
me. It was during this time I got the urge to do more research about the school
and their canteen services. From a young age I have always enjoyed cooking.
Being a former school teacher I have vast knowledge of how external factors can
influence your daily teaching strategy. By providing healthy food, eliminating
sugars and carbohydrates one can eliminate attention deficiencies. This being
only one of a few different factors,” Tamlynn said.
“Through a long process of praying, research, planning, combining a business
proposal and tender, I eventually got an answer my tender was accepted to run
the school café in 2020. Throughout the whole planning and research process
God was my number one go-to-man. With each obstacle from choosing a name,
finalising the menu, choosing packaging and sorting all the small odds and ends,
God was and still is my GPS directing me where to go.
“Being an entrepreneur has many challenges but you are also able to make a
difference in your community, create jobs and teach life skills to those you get in
contact with. From being an eco-friendly café, we strive to have an impact on the
community with recycling, reusing and reducing.
“Manna Cafe will offer menus that are nutritionally balanced with a variety of
dishes and promote community well-being by working with all partners to reduce
health inequalities and promote healthy lifestyles. We will also incorporate a
vegetable/sensory garden where we will produce our own food for the tuck shop
and the children will furthermore have the opportunity to learn more about food.”
Asked about the name, Tamlynn explains she was inspired by a story in the bible
of when the Israelites travelled through the desert from Egypt to the desert land
10 Get It Joburg South December 2019/January 2020
of milk and honey and all they had to eat
for 40 years was Manna (bread). “I never
had things easy and had to work for
everything I wanted in my life. Once again
I’ve had to work and put hours of research
into this café to prepare to be what Manna
café is all about. In this story God reveals
He will always provide no matter what. Not
too much and not too little, He will supply
just the right amount of what is needed.
“We stay on a small holding in Blue
Saddle Ranch Estate where we have lots
of space for our children to run around,
ride their bikes and live a country lifestyle
in a secured estate. We have dogs, racing
pigeons, chickens, geese and ducks. Soon
we will have many more animals. We have
space to grow our own food in a garden
which we will also use in the future to
generate crops for Manna café. This is our
trial and error garden which we will perfect
to also start at Trinityhouse Glenvista to
teach the children. We spend as much time
together with our friends and family and
being a big family, we ALWAYS
have a family function to attend,”
added Tamlynn.
When asked about her hobbies, she
summed it up perfectly, “At this stage
of my life there is so much going on my
hobby is actually being a mother. I know
this sounds quite ridiculous but special,
precious moments together with our
children is enough.”
AFRICA!
Founder of Lumela Afrika, Leanne Dickinson from Henley on Klip, chats about the
exclusive range of hand painted products, paying it forward, and living her best life.
With her
positive
attitude
and zest for
life, Leanne
Dickinson is
an inspiration
to fellow
South Africans
wanting to make
a difference. Originally from Westville in
Kwazulu-Natal, the 52-year-old completed
a Bcom Marketing and Economics degree
at the University of Durban. She has two
boys – the eldest who studies BCom at
the University of Stellenbosch and
the youngest finishing off school at St
Johns College.
“Like many others, I joined the corporate
sector and every day on my way to work
I saw women with their children begging
for money at the traffic light corners.
Although a common sight in South Africa,
it got me thinking of how I could try and
help these women make a sustainable
living. Around this time sanctions were
dropped against South Africa and I had the
idea of creating and hand painting naïve
art pieces to export abroad. Initially my
mother-in-law joined me in the business
and together, with two women, we started
painting wooden trinket boxes, pencil
cases and some decorative ceramic plates
all by hand,” she said.
Now nearly 25 years later the Lumela Afrika
range has expanded in leaps and bounds,
and is now sold across borders. The range
includes an exclusive collection of hand
painted enamelware, pure white porcelain
enamelware, wooden musical and
educational toys as well as a host of other
bright fun accessories. “With our unique
enamel designs and products we have also
ventured into fabulous corporate giftware.
“Lumela (pronounced Dumela) means
hello in the Sotho language. Because the
majority of our staff are Sesotho speaking
we felt that the name Lumela Afrika -
essentially Hello from Africa - was a
fitting one!
“Lumela Afrika is a job creation project
mainly focusing on the employment of
single mothers from the local townships
of Sharpeville, Sebokeng and Orange
Farm. None of our hand crafted items are
completely identical and all are made with
tons of love and attention to detail. Lumela
Afrika, however, is not just about bright,
fun products – it is about empowerment
and upliftment. To positively change the
lives of local men, women and children,
through sustainable employment.
“Although Lumela Afrika is about fun
funkiness and functionality, we do work
with our hearts as well and we know
we can make a difference by acting
responsibly. At Lumela Afrika it is important
for us to be socially responsible and have
an ethical approach to doing business.”
Apart from creating employment for
people without skills they are also involved
with local children’s charities. The Lumela
pay it forward programme regularly
support these charities.
Asked about her inspiration for the
various designs, Leanne says it comes
from conversations with friends, Pinterest,
coffee table books, dinner parties
with family and friends and especially
travelling. Furthermore she describes her
creativity is boosted by her surroundings,
diverse culture and a beautiful country.
“Although I do have concerns about
our country, I choose to make a positive
contribution. This is my home and I want
to make a difference – hence part of our
mission slogan being – Gifting with
a Purpose.
“Despite its challenges, I love this country,
I love the people, the sun and the lifestyle.
It is a truly amazing country and South
Africans are inherently good people. We
need to stand together to ensure as a
nation our voices are heard and the best
interests of all our people are the focus.
“Weekends are for socialising with friends
and relaxing, taking the dog for a walk
and definitely going to the gym if I haven’t
had time to go in my hectic week. I also
enjoy catching up on a good book, mainly
self-help, as I have a keen interest in health
and business books. I spend a lot of time
reading and researching these topics.”
Chatting with Leanne was a treat in itself as
her enthusiasm and zest for life definitely
rubs off!
Splendid summer colour
These guidelines will help keep your garden
looking beautiful through the summer.
We’re planting…a fiesta of colour for the holiday season. Hot
pink, fiery fuchsia, sizzling orange and knockout yellow are the
colours of the samba, the rumba and Portulaca Nano, a heat-loving
ground cover that is always covered with flowers. Although
not indigenous, it is extremely drought and heat tolerant, able
to keep flowering through times of low rainfall. Plants do best in
full sun and grow in ordinary garden soil. The flowers open early
in the morning, creating a ball of colour well into the evening.
It is an easy-to-care-for summer annual that will perform as a
perennial in frost-free areas. Use it as a garden ground cover or
on pavements, in hanging baskets and window boxes and as a
’spiller’ in mixed containers. Visit www.ballstraathof.co.za
GARDEN TASKS FOR
DECEMBER AND JANUARY
• Water early morning or late afternoon, to
minimise evaporation.
• Lightly mulch beds to keep plant roots cool
and moist for longer
• In hot, dry weather, don’t cut the lawn too low.
Leaving it longer shades the roots.
• Trim off dead flowers to encourage new flowers.
• Fertilise annuals and perennials with an organic
granular fertiliser in mid-December.
Going on holiday?
If your garden will be watered less often or not
at all while away, here are some survival tips:
• Don’t fertilise at all: you don’t want to encourage
new growth which needs more water.
• Spread a 1-2cm layer of mulch over the soil to
conserve moisture.
• Place pot and container plants in the shade
or on saucers so that they can use any excess
water.
• Pinch off all buds and new growth on the
roses. This also saves water.
• Spray the roses with Ludwig’s Insect Spray
and Chronos (a fungicide) to repel pests and
prevent black spot while you are away.
• Check the automatic irrigation and unblock
any spray nozzles so that all the plants receive
water.
• After holidays away, don’t mow the overgrown
lawn too low. Reduce the height of the lawn
gradually over
two or three mowings so that it doesn’t burn.
Must read!… Keith Kirsten and horticulture are inseparable. Happily, his bestknown
book, Gardening with Keith Kirsten, fully revised and updated, has just hit the
shelves … perfectly timed for Christmas. In recognition of the importance of gardening
in harmony with nature, this fourth edition has more info on indigenous species,
locally - bred hybrids and waterwise plants. In addition to sections on garden design,
maintenance, as well as dealing with pests and diseases, the bulk of the book consists
of directories with comprehensive details about growing more than 2000 plants (trees,
shrubs, creepers ... you name it). It’s the perfect pressie for a garden enthusiast, or you
could treat yourself! Struik Lifestyle, R350.
Christmas is coming. But for Women’s
Murder Club, crime never stops. In
James Patterson and Maxine Paetro’s
19th Christmas, Sergeant Lindsay
Boxer is looking forward to spending
time with her family over the holidays.
But then she receives a tip-off that the
biggest heist ever to hit San Francisco
is being planned for Christmas Day,
and the architect of the ambitious
attack unleashes chaos across the city,
laying traps and false alarms to distract
Lindsay and the SFPD from their
ultimate goal. Penguin, R290.
In her new home, Brodie’s Watch, Ava thinks she’s found the perfect place to
hide from a past she’s ashamed of. But in The Shape of Night it’s not long
before Ava begins to suspect she’s not alone in this house full of secrets. If she’s
wrong, then maybe she’s losing her mind. Tess Gerritsen cranks up the suspense
... it’s all haunted houses and handsome ghosts and (phantom) sex. Bantam
Press, R290. • Dear Mr Wrexham, I know you don’t know me but please, please,
please, you have to help me. Ruth Ware’s The Turn of the Key opens with a
young woman begging a barrister for help. Her name is Rowan, and she’s the
nanny in the Elincourt case. And, she says, ‘I didn’t kill that child’. A dream job of
live-in nanny with a staggeringly generous salary and a picture-perfect family
turns into a nightmare for Rowan, one which ends with a child dead and her
in a cell awaiting trial for murder. A murder she swears she’s not responsible
for. Described as a gripping modern-day haunted house thriller, this is one you
shouldn’t read when you’re home alone! Harvill Secker, R290
HOLIDAY READS
Red hot reads for the summer
Baby Zephany Nurse hit the headlines when she was kidnapped from
beside her mothers hospital bed more than 20 years ago. She hit the
headlines again when by pure chance, her birth parents discovered
she’d been living just a short distance away. Now, in Zephany, written
by Joanne Jowell, Miché Solomon tells the often harrowing story of the
past four years and her struggles to come to terms with living with two
sets of parents – those who brought her up, who love her and whom she
loves and her birth parents who are strangers. Adding to the trauma is
the fact that the woman she believed was her mother, ‘who was there
for me every day’ was jailed for the kidnapping. Fortunately, the man she
calls Daddy, Michael Solomon, has never wavered in his love and support,
which has hugely helped Miché courageously continue to forge ahead in
her efforts to make a success of her life. Tafelberg, R260.
“We have so many different people
from all over the world who live
here and we have lots of different
said Lia Kyprou.
Keagan Lumley loves South Africa
because, “The education is good and
very kind and some people try and
stop crime,” said Masego Molefe.
Ava Wu loves living here because,
“We have a mountain that looks like
a table and I love the president.”
“We have special animals other
people don’t have and lots of nice
people and schools, that’s why I love
HALLELUJAH,
she’s a winner!
Isabella Rocha (13) from Meyersdal, who is a Grade 7 learner at Marist Brothers Linmeyer,
has won the National Spur Singing Stars Competition 2019, and is over the moon!
Last year she took part in Kids with Talent SA
and came away with the first place in her
age category.
We chatted with her in between her finishing
school and her next after school activity. “It’s
not easy to find time to chat with Isabella,
she’s always up to something,” laughed her
mom Ashleigh.
The song she sung which has made her a
winner, was Hallelujah by Alexander Burke.
“This song is fabulous, I love it and I knew
in my heart it was the right song for me,”
said Isabella.
“I’m so thrilled I won and I couldn’t believe it
when my name was called out as the winner.
I burst into tears and then it was an awesome
feeling. Before I knew I’d won though, it was
very tense and I really thought the winners
who were placed second and third were
fantastic. I met such great friends there,”
she said.
Isabella’s mom, dad Carlos and sister Sienna are
her biggest fans, with family and friends not far
behind. “It’s such a brilliant achievement and
we are all extremely proud of her,” they added.
“My prize as the winner was something else! I
received R30 000 and two recordings for me to
sing in a studio as well as a microphone stand
and microphone. So exciting! The prize money
has been put into my bank account for me for
when I’m older, although I did treat myself to a
new iPod.”
Isabella remains humble and is well grounded
and extremely well mannered. Even though
she tends to live life in the fast track, she still
finds time for hobbies, which include playing
drums and piano and she is in the Marimba
choir band at school, and also enjoys public
speaking.
She’s looking forward to the December school
holidays and having some fun times. “Next
year I’ll be moving up to Grade 8, I’ve been
here since Grade 00 and it’s a great school,”
she said.
With such talent who knows what Isabella will
achieve next!
FROM THE
Principal’s desk
With dynamic educational institutions in the area, we’ve asked a few principal’s about
College
LUX College delights
in the development of
the individual and we
facilitate school in a
way that separates us
from all other schools.
We have our own
want our learners to
strive to develop their
becoming a Google
push our boundaries
It is our mission for every
appreciated. We strive to be
a benchmark in preschool
standards. My goal for 2020
is to continue supporting
assistants to keep them positive,
motivated, enthusiastic, but most
importantly happy. The truth is
an educators job doesn’t get any
easier. We need to learn how to
manage our energy, resulting in happiness and being able to
be the best teacher and leader. Running a school is a marathon,
not a sprint. Details: Creative Academy School of Excellence,
Hello Summer! Hot days. Sultry
nights. Sexy swimwear and slip
dresses. Which all, obviously,
scream tan. We’re massive fans
of the Caribbeantan brand. The
self-tan and tan care products
are designed to eliminate the
fuss and mess associated with
at-home tanning creams, as
well as the costs associated with
achieving the perfect tan. The
days of harsh, chemical-heavy
products and harmful sunbeds
are gone! We – and the folk from
Caribbeantan – believe that
treating your skin with care is
beautiful, and that means tanning
safely and loving your body from
head to toe. Think products that
are good for you, good for our
planet, and cruelty-free! You’ll
find them at Dis-Chem and Clicks,
select independent stores, as well
as online at www.caribbeantan.
