USE COMMON SENSE
One of our traditional fireworks holidays is approaching. Please be
considerate of your neighbors while enjoying the tradition of fireworks
on New Years’ Eve. Don’t use people, cars or houses as targets for bottle
rockets and roman candles. It would be tragic to cause injury or damage
on this exciting holiday. Also be aware of your neighborhood’s rules on
fireworks.
Please consider the following:
• Please don’t direct any fireworks at anything or anyone.
• Please don’t shoot fireworks off before 9 AM or after 10 PM on any day,
(except New Year’s Eve: try to finish by no later than 1 AM).
• Avoid shooting fireworks that shoot up or fly through the air (especially
in a dry season).
• If a car comes down the street, get out of its way and do not light any
fireworks while it is passing.
• Don’t make the “fireworks holiday” turn into a month of fireworks. Often
frightened pets must be taken inside while the fireworks are going off.

COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE FAIR
SET FOR DECEMBER 3RD
The CFISD guidance and counseling and psychological services
departments are sponsoring the Community Mental Health Resource
Fair, to be held on December 3 rd , 3:30-6 PM at the Berry Center (8877
Barker Cypress Road). District parents, staff and community members
will have the opportunity to meet the CFISD Mental Health Intervention
Team and community mental health care providers, as well as learn of
available resources and opportunities.
More than 70 mental health providers and vendors are scheduled to
attend the fair, including a massage therapist to help promote self-care.
Numerous door prizes will be available for fair patrons to win, while
vendors and events booths will have gifts and other giveaways.
“This is an awesome opportunity for our entire community to view many
of our mental health providers under one roof,” said Franklin Sampson,
director of guidance and counseling. “It’s very rare to have an event solely
focused on providing individual information from multiple therapists and
facilities. We are taking the guess work out of it. We are giving everyone
the privilege of meeting with mental health providers. The event is totally
free and we encourage all to attend. Let’s continue to tackle the stigma
associated with mental health concerns.”

The Center for School Behavioral Health is a program started by Mental
Health America of Greater Houston. The program allows school districts
across the greater Houston area to come together and collaborate on
ideas and best practices through the Center Collaborative and Learning
Community subprograms. CFISD’s department of psychological services
and the guidance and counseling department have both been members
of the Center Collaborative and Learning Community for more than
seven years.
The following requirements must be met by a school district to receive a
Bronze recognition award:
• District is a Center Collaborative member for at least one full academic
year.
• District is implementing five to 10 center recommendations.
• At least one district representative attends 60 percent of the Center
Collaborative meetings.
• At least one district representative attends 40 percent of the Learning
Community meetings.

CFISD EARNS SCHOOLS FIRST TOP RATING
FOR 17TH STRAIGHT YEAR
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD received a rating of Superior by the Texas Education
Agency (TEA)’s School FIRST (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas)
program, announced in early August - marking the 17 th consecutive top
rating for CFISD.
The rating system measures the quality of a district’s financial management
and reporting system based on 15 indicators. A negative response to any
of the first few criteria could have resulted in an automatic “Substandard”
rating. CFISD received the highest rating on 14 of 15 indicators. While a
score of 60 indicates a passing mark, CFISD attained a score of 94. The
highest possible score is 100.
School FIRST was developed by the TEA in response to Senate Bill 218,
which was passed by the 77 th Legislature in 2001. The primary objective
of School FIRST is to achieve quality performance in the management of
school districts’ financial resources - a goal made more significant due to the
complexity of accounting associated with the Texas school financial system.
The School FIRST accountability rating system assigns financial ratings
to Texas school districts, with the highest being Superior, followed by
Above-Standard, Meets-Standard and Substandard Achievement.
SIXTH ANNUAL CFISD HEALTH EXPO
DRAWS 1,300-PLUS GUESTS
More than 1,300 patrons visited the sixth annual CFISD Health Expo,
benefitting the Health Organization of Physical Educators (H.O.P.E.), on
October 12 th at the Berry Center.
The event featured on-site health screenings and massages and included
health demonstrations such as the blender bike attraction provided by
CFISD’s nutrition services department. The event featured a total of seven
student performances.
Students and parents participated in a health walk on the concourse
facilitated by elementary PE teachers to encourage movement. The expo
benefits H.O.P.E., which raises scholarships to support physical education
and promote lifelong physical fitness.
“We’re so thankful to have everyone come out,” said Tania Gaubert, CFISD
health services coordinator. “It’s been overwhelming to see the amount of
sponsors that have come out and set up their booths for the community
to see. It’s been a great success.”

The Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational is once again the place

SCOUTS
Troop 113103 consisting of 3 rd -5 th graders earned their Robotics patch at
Code Ninja in October. The Junior level Scouts presented their creations to

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through
18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and law. Copper
Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residence areas for the

BOY SCOUT TROOP 609
Boy Scout Troop 609 is a specialized for Boys with high functioning
Autism Spectrum Disorders. They meet at the Westview School on the 1 st
and 3 rd Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 838
Troop 838 is a small pack located near Hwy 6 and West Road at the Crossbridges
Church. We are between the Copperfield and Aberdeen neighborhoods. Being
a smaller troop allows us to be flexible and address the needs of our scouts more
nimbly. We currently have boys from ages 11 to 17 within our group working
to make Eagle. We try to camp monthly, with a wide variety of locations on our
agenda. The different locations are chosen by the senior boys to more directly
meet our training needs and to keep expenses low. In fact, we have some of the
lowest expenses in the area. Our adult leaders are all experienced with years
of scouting under their belt per individual. We also work closely with several
local packs of cub scouts and participate in civic duties around the area as well.

TROOP 1865
Troop 1865 runs a diverse program of outdoor and service activities,
with events selected by the scouts themselves. We meet Mondays at 6:30
PM, at the Copperfield HOA building on Willow River and Hwy 6, behind
Labay. We’ve gone backpacking through the National Forest, rappelling
off Enchanted Rock, Survival camping, boating, canoeing and anything
else the scouts can dream up. We do high-adventure camping at
Philmont and Seabase. Our advancement program has enabled scout to
achieve the coveted rank of Eagle Scout at 10 times the national average
rate. We see scouting as a practice run on adult life. Scouts learn about
leadership and teamwork through having to work together in the field.
We learn about responsibility through fund-raising activities that have
allowed the entire troop to pay for their own summer camp each year.

We are an active year round pack for Kindergarten-5 th grade that focuses on

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop
61 at 7 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks
Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of
what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and
their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during
meetings and activities. Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery,
rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service,
citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop

INGREDIENTS:
2 eggs
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup instant oatmeal
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 pinch salt
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease 12 muffin cups.
Whisk eggs, brown sugar, vegetable oil and milk together in a bowl until
smooth. Stir flour, oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda and salt into wet
ingredients to form a batter. Fill the prepared muffin cups with batter.
Bake in preheated oven until tops are golden brown and an inserted
toothpick comes out clean, about 20 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine gelatin and cold water; set aside to soften.
Combine milk and 1/2 cup sugar in a small glass bowl. Microwave for 3
minutes or until milk begins to boil.
In a steady stream, pour hot milk into beaten eggs, whisking constantly.
Cook custard in the microwave, whisking after each minute, until it
thickens slightly, about 2 minutes. Stir in softened gelatin and mix until
melted. Stir in rum. Let filling cool to room temperature. (If you refrigerate
it, stir occasionally to prevent gelatin from setting too soon.)
In a medium bowl, whip cream until soft peaks form; beat in 1/4 cup
sugar. Set aside 1/2 cup of whipped cream for garnish; keep refrigerated.
Fold remaining whipped cream into eggnog mixture. Pour filling into
pie crust and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Garnish with reserved
whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.

Gardening Tips for December
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed
in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize
monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid highphosphate
product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.
• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.
• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias
and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such
as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.
• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to
lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs,
speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily
damaged.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More
birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CHRISTMAS PROJECTS TO DO WITH KIDS
REINDEER ORNAMENTS
Make reindeer ornaments or fridge art by tracing your child’s hands on to
two pieces of tan felt (antlers).
• Then trace their foot on to a piece of dark brown felt (reindeer face).
• Top with joggle eyes and a red pompom nose…instant reindeer!
• Thread at top for ornament or glue magnet on back.
WINTERLAND HOUSE
• A simple shoe box can be turned into a winter wonderland for children.
• Cut a rectangle shape in the lid of the shoe box.
• On inside of lid, tape a piece of white tissue paper (this allows light to
filter through).
• On side of shoe box cut another rectangle shape (this allows you to peer
through box).
• On inside of box, glue white or navy blue construction paper to the
sides of the box.
• Glue fiber fill to the bottom of box.
• Streak glue on fiberfill and shake sparkles on it. This is the snow.
• Cut out old Christmas cards and position pictures like a winter scene in
the shoe box.
• Wrap the outside of the box with pretty Christmas paper.
• Viola! Instant winterland viewmaster!
CHRISTMAS CARD GAME BOOK - MAKE A SCRAPBOOK
OF OLD CHRISTMAS CARDS INTO A GAME.
• Glue them onto construction paper and take a paper punch and put
three rings or tie heavy yarn.
• Simply find cards that resemble the title of a Christmas song or theme.
EXAMPLE: Baby Jesus In a Manger would be “Away in the Manager.” A
Snowman on a card would be “Frosty the Snowman.” This is a great way
for kids to remember songs!
PRETZEL WREATH
• Cut 5-inch squares from green poster board.
• Cut a 1/2-inch circle from center to make a 3/4-inch circular base.
• Arrange 6 miniature pretzels on base. Mark the center of each large
pretzel loop with a pencil. Remove pretzels and with a hole punch make
holes at the marks.
• Place 6 pretzels over holes and glue them to the base; turn base over
and glue 6 more pretzels, matching them to pretzels on opposite side.
Let dry overnight.
• Spray both sides with varnish and let dry.
• Weave thin ribbon through the holes and tie a bow at the top to make
the wreath. (Note: An adult or an older child may use a hot-glue gun to
complete the project in about an hour.)
CINNAMON ORNAMENTS
• Combine 3/4 cup applesauce and a (3.88-ounce) jar ground cinnamon,
stirring well.
• Turn out onto work surface. Roll to 1/4-inch thickness; cut with 3- to
4-inch cookie cutters and cut holes for hanging with a plastic drinking
straw.
• Transfer to wire racks; let stand, turning occasionally, 4 to 5 days or until
dry. Or place on lightly greased baking sheets and bake at 225° for 1 1/2
hours or until dry.
• Insert thin ribbons through holes to hang. Yield: 1 dozen.

STARLIGHT MINT WREATH
• Cut out a cardboard donut.
• Insert a brass fastener and attach a raffia loop (for hanging).
• Or purchase a small wooden embroidery hoop. Glue on starlight mints
and add a bright red bow.
SNOWMAN CAN
• Take an empty coffee can (with lid on) and cover with white construction
paper or white fabric.
• Glue on black buttons for eyes and mouth and orange felt for nose.
• Top with a small child’s knit cap or old fabric remnants and tie off the
top.
• Add blush to cheeks.
MORE HOLIDAY FUN THINGS TO DO
WRAPPING PAPER PARTY
Get rid of the kids. Then have your friends bring all their gifts, wrapping
paper, tape, scissors and a snack over, sit in the living/family room and
talk and wrap. It goes by much faster than sitting up by yourself in the
middle of the night. You can also do this with Christmas cards. It’s very
productive and everybody is in a great mood when they go home!
COOKIE/CANDY EXCHANGE
Get a group of 6-8 people together and everyone makes 1 kind of cookie.
Then you trade bags of 6 cookies with the recipe. Everyone goes home
with an assortment of cookies and you only had to bake one kind!
HOLIDAY POTLUCK
Everyone brings a dish to eat. You can gather together and sing Christmas
carols and catch up with friends. You could also take the kids to a local
nursing home or neighbor’s home to sing.
HOLIDAY LIGHTS
Start a tradition in your neighborhood where everyone lights his or
her homes the first weekend in December. Line your sidewalks with
luminaries and have a neighborhood walk that evening.
PROGRESSIVE CRAFT PARTY
Make a wreath at one house; move on to another house to make
ornaments. At the last house, sit in front of the fireplace with a mug of
warm spiced cider!
HOLIDAY STITCH FEST
Invite your friends that sew in for an afternoon of Christmas music and
refreshments. Have them bring their projects that are in progress to stitch
with the company of friends. You could also have a cookie exchange!
CRAFTY KIDS
Have a kid’s craft afternoon to make simple gifts and ornaments.
FRIENDSHIP TEA
Invite your friends over for an afternoon. Serve a luncheon on china and
have a gift exchange afterwards. What a great way to get together with
your friends at the holidays.
TEACHER’S GIFT
Make a tree-skirt and let the kids (in class) do their handprints and
write their names with fabric paint (red and green). This also works for

Grandparents. You can mail it to grandkids in other states so they are
included. It’s a great surprise.
*You can make the tree skirt by taking a round table cloth and cutting
a circle in center and slit down the side. Sew the outside edges. You
can usually get the same print in square or rectangular tablecloths and
coordinate your décor.
CHRISTMAS CRAFTS
APPLE AND ORANGE GARLANDS
Apple Slices: Slice 1/4 inch thick and soak for 30 minutes in a brine made
from the juice of 2 lemons, 2 tablespoons of salt and 1 cup of water.
Spread on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and bake 2-3 hours in a
200-250 degree oven. Easier method: Leave slices in an oven with a pilot
light for 2 days or until they lose all moisture. Strung into garlands, the
apple slices will air-dry completely and “last forever.”
ORANGE SLICES
Cut oranges into thin slices, lay on paper towels and microwave on high
for 1 minute. Flip and repeat several times, then follow directions for
baking apple slices in oven. You can string your slices on heavy nylon
thread (like fishing wire) or heavy dental floss. You can also add bay
leaves, cinnamon sticks (cut short) and baby’s breath. Make them as long
as you want. Add raffia bows to the ends.

APPLE WREATH
Using apple slices that have been dried, take a large embroidery hoop
and layer the apples around the ring. Hot gluing each slice as you go. Add
a bow, some artificial Christmas greenery or Christmas picks and dried
baby’s breath. Now you have made a wreath!
SCENTED CRANBERRY WREATH
You will need: wire, fresh cranberries, glue, baby’s breath and satin ribbon
or fabric.

1. Shape the 18 gauge wire into a heart of the desired size. String fresh
cranberries tightly onto the wire (they will shrink considerably). Air-dry
flat in a very warm, dry place. It will take a week or more for fruit to dry.

Make a little heart Christmas tree in the kitchen and decorate with shiny
tin or copper cookie cutters. Tie them on with strips of red homespun
fabric.
GINGERBREAD DECORATIONS
Hang spicy gingerbread hearts from a garland over a doorway - you’ll get
a fragrant whiff every time you pass!
SACHETS AND ORNAMENTS
Fill Santa’s sack with assorted heart ornaments. Sew a flat-bottomed
burlap bag and weight it with a block of wood. Reach inside for a heart to
give away to holiday visitors - perhaps a stuffed homespun ornament or
heart shaped lavender sachets.
