Beauty
up is: don’t go for it the first time
as you’re prepping for a big event.
Have a play beforehand, when
you’re got a moment. (Which I
appreciate is all any of us has, as
we count down to Christmas.)
Illumintate your limbs. At this
time of year, when bodies are dry
and (I’m looking at my forearms as
I type this) can be flat and almost
dusty-looking, it works really well
to smooth in or sweep on a swoosh
of product featuring the teeniest
particles of gold, to catch the light.
Notwithstanding colder weather,
many of us have a bit of extra skin
on show during the party season:
shoulders, décolletage, forearms or
legs. (The late Princess of Wales’s
leg-lengthening trick, FYI, was to
blend a shimmering product into her
bare shins, which created the optical
illusion of even greater length.)
A body oil infused with gleam
does double-duty, nourishing skin
wherever you apply it. The original
(and I think still the best) is Nuxe
Huile Prodigieuse Gold Shimmer
Dry Oil, £34.50 for 100ml, but
you could also try adding a few
squirts of The Body Shop Drops
of Gold, £12, to your usual body
cream or oil. And gosh, if you’re
feeling really splurge-y, Tom Ford
Soleil Blanc Shimmering Body Oil,
£72 for 100ml, featuring tiny
fragments of platinum and gold leaf,
infusing skin with a glorious floral/
sandalwood scent. Alternatively, with
your biggest, fluffiest powder brush,
swirl on a light veil of shimmering
powder – and my current favourite
for this is Guerlain Météorites Pearl
Powder Blush, £36 (shade Dore). It’ll
probably last me a lifetime of parties!
Kiss your lips with gleam. Here’s
the thing about shimmer after a
certain age; you don’t want it all
over your face. So I would probably
counsel against highlighter, or
shimmering blushers, focusing on
wealdentimes.co.uk
radiant skin, eyes – and a touch of
shimmer on lips. This also deceives
the eye, making lips appear fuller
(and most of us long for that).
The new Chanel Rouge Allure Ink
Matte Liquid Lip Colour range,
£31 each, showcases long-lasting
lip stains which in some cases also
feature metallic microparticles (I
am carrying round 208 Metallic
Red everywhere with me). I
am equally devoted to Guerlain
Kiss Kiss Satin Effect Diamond
Lipstick, £29.50, in Red Jewel.
If you’d rather stay within your
comfort zone by wearing your
regular shade of lipstick, meanwhile,
why not just add a finishing flourish
of shimmering gloss to the bottom
lip, then smack them together to
blend? Laura Mercier Candleglow
Lip Glacé, £20.50, is a bronze-y
shade, while Pat McGrath Lust Gloss
(in Blitz Gold), £25, offers pure
22-carat glam. At the high street
end of the price spectrum, L’Oréal
Glam Shine, £5.99, also does the
trick. But remember: less is more!
Last, but not least, embrace
dazzle on your nails. For years I’ve
been wearing a shimmering polish
that makes my fingertips look like
they’re adorned with pearls, thereby
distracting from hands that haven’t
aged as well as some other bits of me.
My polish-of-choice is OPI Infinite
Shine (in Pearl of Wisdom), £14.50,
but any gold, silver or shimmering
white has the same effect. Frankly,
in this day and age there is no nail
polish that is age-inappropriate,
so go as crazy and glimmery as
you like on your manicure.
And one last bit of advice:
just add pearl earrings. As
Vermeer understood, nothing
illuminates the face better...
