West Melton continue strong
start to the tennis season
• By Jacob Page
WEST MELTON’S positive
start to the Canterbury Country
tennis season continued with a
15-5 win over Kirwee-Springston
to start round two, at Kirwee, on
Saturday.
They dominated the contest
winning 11 of the 16 matches.
West Melton’s victory came on
the back of taking the Ian Jones
Trophy for winning round one of
the competition.
In the other two fixtures,
Rolleston-Killinchy and Tai Tapu
were locked at eight wins each
with Tai Tapu winning by three
games, at Rolleston.
Prebbleton-Lincoln easily
accounted for Fernside 16-0, at
Fernside.
West Melton 16-year-old and
No 1 Luke Tanner remained unbeaten
in singles so far this year.
It was Tai Tapu’s women who
pulled them back into their
contest with Rolleston-Killinchy
with Pieta Aitken and Jo Christie
both unbeaten after the Rolleston-Killinchy
men had won three
of the four singles games.
Week two will see Tai Tapu
host Prebbleton-Lincoln, Kirwee-
Springston welcome Fernside to
Kirwee and Rolleston-Killinchy
travel to West Melton.
The competition is likely to run
through to March.
There will be a weekend break
when senior representatives
compete for the Browning Shield
at Wilding Park on February 22
and 23.
The competition sees teams
from Ellesmere, Mid Canterbury,
North Canterbury and Malvern
compete for the coveted piece of
silverware.
The shield was won by Mid
Canterbury last year.
Ellesmere Tennis president
Jason McKenzie said it was important
for the game in the area
that both Saturday tennis and the
representative fixtures remained
in place despite occasional lack of
playing numbers.
“The standard of the Browning
Shield is still very high and
Canterbury Tennis have been accommodating
in freeing up their
schedule to allow our top players
to compete in it.”
Mr McKenzie said it was
important the pathway for upand-coming
Country players was
maintained through Saturday
tennis.
The Ellesmere junior tennis
team beat North Canterbury by
winning three of the four age
grades.
Ellesmere won the 10s eight sets
to six, the 14s 152 games to 120 and
the 16s 10 matches to six.
North Canterbury won the 12s
nine matches to seven.
