Residents reject Wards Rd report
• By Devon Bolger
A DARFIELD resident battling
the district council over the road
he lives on says a report into
potholes is misleading.
Grant Prescott represents 14
residents on Wards Rd, who have
been lobbying for the road to be
sealed.
They say it is in poor condition.
But a district council report
into the road says its condition
is “average” and there were no
potholes.
Mr Prescott says that statement
and data is “misleading”
and “incorrect.”
“I am absolutely shocked and
appalled at the comments in it. It
appears to be a selective partial
report which is abhorrent,” he
said.
“The report says there are no
potholes, this is absolute rubbish.
I have just walked past 2144
Wards Rd and we have a line of
potholes approximately 25m in
length, one after another.”
Selwyn Times asked the district
council to respond to Mr
Prescott’s claims.
Team leader transportation
Mark Chamberlain said the information
in the report was from
an assessment that was carried
out by an experienced contractor
in September.
“On the day he assessed the
road he did not note any potholes.
On another day there may
have been potholes, because of
the changing of the condition
REJECT: A soak hole Mr Prescott says is placed incorrectly and
dangerous.
of unsealed roads, which is why
we encourage people to let the
council know about potholes
when they appear so we can get
them fixed,” he said.
Mr Prescott said there was also
no mention in the report of what
he says are dangerous soak holes.
Mr Chamberlain said they
are aware of the soak holes
positioned at the edge of the
carriageway and will work with
the contractor to have new ones
located further away.
Mr Prescott said he also takes
issue with the traffic counts in
the report.
“They say 79 vehicles used the
road in March this year. I can
prove this is complete and utter
rubbish as we have a minimum
of 40 residential movements a
day, and that is just residents.”
Mr Prescott has laid a formal
complaint with the district council
over the report.
He says if no resolution is
reached he will be contacting the
Ombudsman.
$1.2 million cost to strengthen Leeston building
• By Devon Bolger
SEISMIC strengthening and
roofing work of the earthquakeprone
Leeston Library and
Medical Centre is expected to
cost $1.2 million.
A recent engineering report has
shown parts of the building are
below 34 per cent of the required
standards of the building code.
A district council report said
the engineering report was done
as part of the process of replacing/
renewing the roof of the building.
The work has now been
brought forward to the 2020/21
financial year.
A cost assessment has been
completed for the work needed
on the building now.
It includes an allowance by the
property management for enhancements
to the building that
would improve it for tenants.
It also includes cladding replacement
which the report says:
“it would be sensible to consider.”
Seismic strengthening and roof
replacement - $1,128,000
Cladding replacement - $777,000
Enhancements for tenants -
$250,000
General contingency - $250,000
Total cost estimate - $2,402,000
District council staff will now
report back on possible options
for the project by April 28.
The building has not been
closed as there is no urgent risk
to the safety of people using it.
