Curl up with a terrific read this August
Sheila O’Flanagan’s novels are
always fabulous options for those
who love a little chick-lit (don’t we
all?). In her husband’s mistake,
perfect couple Roxy and Dave
McMenamin first kissed when Roxy
was 16, and they’ve been in love ever
since. They have a great marriage
and wonderfully happy life. until the
morning after Roxy’s father’s funeral,
when she walks in on Dave in bed
with their next door neighbour. Time,
it seems, for Roxy to make some
big, life-changing decisions. Lovely,
warm, funny ... a wonderful book for a
weekend read. Headline UK, R325
Also look out for the best
Jack Ryan thriller yet!
Tom Clancy’s Oath of Office,
written by Marc Cameron, is a rollercoaster
of heart-stopping action ...
a thriller that will get your adrenalin
going from the first chapter to the
last. When uS President Jack Ryan
asks his new Secretary of Homeland
Security what frightens him, Mark
Dehart answers ‘Three things’. Which
three? ‘Any three. If they all happen at
the same time.’ From a quiet beach
in Portugal where a beautiful woman
kills a French arms dealer, to protests
against the oppressive regime in
Iran, to the Russian troops and
ships massing on the borders of the
ukraine, across the world a conspiracy
is brewing ... one so darkly brilliant
that no-one has joined the dots.
There’s a madman with a plan ... a plan
more devastating than President Ryan
can imagine. This is the latest (and
may well be the best) in Tom Clancy’s
Jack Ryan series. Penguin, R275
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Oh. A new Catherine Alliott
novel. Yay! Just the thing for a chilly
weekend curled up on the sofa
with a box of biscuits. In A Cornish
Summer, Flora’s been in love with her
husband, Hugo, for two decades. Just
a small problem ... for 15 of those years
he’s been married to someone else.
Now she’s been invited to paint her
ex-father-in-law at the family home in
Cornwall. It promises to be a blissful
summer ... except for her awful exmother-in-law,
and ... oops ... it appears
her ex-husband and his (admittedly
lovely) second wife are going to be
there too. Not so blissful after all. A
few lovely twists, great characters,
many laugh-out-loud passages and
you’ve a brilliant chick-lit read. LOVED
it! Penguin, R290
A nine-month-old baby is hard work. Sleep deprived Carolina and
uncommunicative Aksel are having a tough time, but know things will get
better. One evening they go to sleep, Carolina thinking ‘we have thousands of
days ahead of us’ ... but they don’t. Aksel dies in his sleep, leaving Carolina’s world
upside down. Based on author Carolina Setterwall’s own experiences, Let’s hope
For the Best is all about life’s small moments. It’s about motherhood and family,
love and death. An emotional, honest, unforgettable read. Bloomsbury, R295
Wendy werk as
‘n verhuringskonsultant by die Nienkemper-groep, en is ‘n mamma van twee
seuntjies, ouderdomme 7 en 9.
Dié dinamiese sussies bring ‘n nuwigheid na Bloemfontein waaroor ons bitter
opgewonde is: Buti Yoga.
Buti Yoga bring ‘n verskeidenheid bewegings saam, insluitende vinyasa-styl
waarmee Buti help.
klas is anders. Jy kan tussen 600 tot
900 kalorieë verbrand en dit gee jou
‘n slanke en gespierde lyf, sonder
gewigte.” Dis ‘n kragtige samevloei
van verskeie bewegings met jogategnieke
as die grondslag, ‘n alles-in-een
kardiovaskulêre, prettige ontploffing!
Buti Yoga vier ook vroulikheid in elke
vorm en beweeg liggaamsdele waarvan
baie vroue vergeet het. Wendy voeg
Sy was as ‘n
In
hulself te bemagtig as vrou.”
As werkende mammas kén Cindy en
welstand omsien, meen Cindy. “Maak ‘n
verbintenis met jouself dat jy na jouself
gaan kyk en gee dit alles! Probeer
altyd op ‘n Maandag met jou oefening
begin en swaai negatiewe denkwyses
soos verskonings om na positiewe
gedagtes. Maak ‘n bewustelike besluit
om beter voedselkeuses te maak en
oefen ‘n halfuur per dag, of minstens
drie keer per week. Bederf dan jouself
een keer per week.”
Wie kan daarmee begin?
“Ons fokus is nou uitsluitlik op vroue.
Ons wil vroue inspireer, help en
motiveer, maar dis ongelukkig nie
vir swanger vroue nie. Alhoewel dit
baie uitdagend is, is dit vir alle vlakke.
Jy kom soos jy is, begin waar jy is en
doen wat jy kan! Jy hoef nie fiks te
wees of ervaring te hê in dans nie. Dit
leer jou om jouself uit jou geriefsone
te stoot en te groei! Is dit intens? Ja. Is
The
Lion Lady
The last thing Fiona Miles wants people to think is that she keeps a house
full of cats… but it’s not too far from the truth.
Text: MJ Lourens
After 13 years in the industry, this
passionate woman established the
South African office of the FOUR
PAWS International Animal Welfare
Foundation, and subsequently ensured
that 150 lions that had been rescued
locally and internationally have had a
permanent species-appropriate home,
free from danger and cruelty.
We do all we can to
ensure the lives of
these animals are
extended, and that
they have the ability
to live their lives in a
dignified way.
Fiona, country director of FOUR PAWS
in South Africa, has managed to
build the organisation as a leading
NGO campaigning for a better life for
lions and has shown there is in fact a
solution to the global problems big
cats are facing.
“Every roar that echoes between
the escarpment of LIONSROCK is a
reminder to me that we have saved
an animal and are giving it the best
possible life, right here in the Free
State; but it is also a reminder that
the job is never done – because we’re
far from a world where animals are
treated with empathy, respect and
understanding,” she says.
Setting up the LIONSROCK Big Cat
Sanctuary in the Free State (outside
Bethlehem) was a new venture to
Fiona, but she had ample experience
in business and processes to help set
up this project. Her experience also led
her to learn a lot about conservation
throughout her time at the Sector,
Education and Training Authority
(Seta). FOUR PAWS crossed her path
almost by chance, but once the task at
hand was defined, she was adamant to
make a difference, however, it was not
an easy task that awaited her.
After visiting the property, today
known as LIONSROCK, she was
shocked by what she found.
“At first sight, I thought to myself:
‘Could this be real?’ The farm was far
removed from anything remotely
considered animal welfare, as this
was in fact a breeding farm for lions
– destined to be killed in the awful
canned hunting industry.” That was of
course the challenge that lay ahead of
her: Turning a breeding farm, where
lions were exploited for commercial
gain, into a sanctuary for big cats –
their final refuge.
Upon witnessing a lion trophy against
the wall, the skin of a lioness used as
a rug on the floor and little lion cubs
running over the rug – once a majestic
lioness – Fiona realised that the task
was far greater than she had initially
anticipated.
“I felt a personal responsibility to give
these animals a better life.”
After presenting the vision of FOuR PAWS to the relevant
government departments, obtaining approval from
stakeholders far and wide, the team was finally able to
purchase the land and started building what is now the
biggest big cat sanctuary in Africa.
Whilst drinking her coffee – which she takes with half a
sweetener – I ask her what motivates her to get out of bed
to continue the long fight against animal cruelty, for lions in
particular, as the reality is: nothing will change overnight.
“At a certain point in my life I realised that more needed to
be done to ensure that animals get to live their lives the way
they were intended to, and that there were injustices to be
stopped. I want to see empty cages, and that is really the
motivation daily,” she says.
As we are celebrating women this month, I direct the
question of whether it is difficult to be a woman in this
industry – being up against mostly males on the opposite
side of the fence.
“The work we do is sometimes regarded as a hobby, a mere
pastime and often we are regarded as bunny huggers. I
believe women have the affinity for nurturing, caring and
ensuring the well-being of life.
“That is what we do: We do all we can to ensure the lives of
these animals are extended, and that they have the ability to
live their lives in a dignified way.”
To a certain degree, this ties in with one of the most
important qualities another woman taught her… respect.
Through her mother’s teachings, Fiona has learned respect
for humans and for animals – which also coincides with the
philosophy of her organisation.
World Lion Day is celebrated on August 10th, and her biggest
wish for this day is to see the protection for lions fully restored
and that they’ll one day only be seen in the wild.
“The captive lion breeding industry represents what’s wrong
with the world; where humans feel they have the right to
exploit animals for commercial gain. If we can find solutions
where the world cannot profiteer from these animals, we
can put our efforts to extending their lives and habitat. We
are currently in a situation not only where lions in the wild
are at risk, but the welfare of captive lions deteriorating at an
alarming rate. More and more proof of devastating keeping
conditions are surfacing, illustrating the abominable situation
South Africa is currently finding itself in.”
A turning point for lions will come eventually, but it will take a
lot of courage, says Fiona.
“The tipping point will come when people with power make
the decision to fight for these animals and are willing to
see those decisions through – no matter what the political
impact will be. When this happens, we as NGOs can invest our
time and resources into the further protection of this species,
rather than constant fighting for changes in legislation. When
this courageous decision is made, and legislation is changed,
we can put more into care, conservation and resources will
be able to go so much further.”
For now, she’s far from giving up, because she believes that
change will come.
“It simply must,” she concludes.
fashion game to a whole new level,
because, Busi’s services don’t stop with
the design of her Ruby Red items. She
gives excellent style advice. “My clients
often turn to me for advice on what to
wear for a specific occasion. They tell
me what options they have at home,
and I’ll suggest wearing certain pieces
together which they didn’t necessarily
think of.”
Busi grew up in Johannesburg and
moved to Bloemfontein when she
got married. Her first husband passed
away, and today she is again happily
married. She has three beautiful
daughters – the eldest (26), who works
as an online specialist, the middle child
(16), who wants to be a social media
influencer, and a busy 14-year-old
teenager.
“I’ve always been intrigued by fashion.
I’m especially in love with winter
clothing. Suits, coats, heels, hats… it
just does something to me when I
wear a statement coat with beautiful
shoes.” Busi focuses on the capsule
wardrobe approach. She explains
that the idea of building your entire
wardrobe out of individual statement
and staple pieces is brilliant in creating
your specific style, without breaking
the bank. “Invest in good quality
pieces. Don’t buy hundreds of cheap
clothing items which will clutter up
your wardrobe and add confusion to
your style.”
Ruby Red fills a niche market and
her elite clientele trust her with their
fashion choices. “My clients want to
make a statement with their clothing.
They are ready to invest in quality
pieces, and they do so with confidence
and trust in my brand. It is my wish
for Ruby Red to become a household
name in Bloemfontein’s fashion
industry.”
It has not been easy for Busi to build
an empire in such a segmented
industry in Bloemfontein. But through
perseverance, research and hard
work, she managed to make a name
for herself and stand out among her
competitors. “I love to enrich myself
with knowledge. Knowledge is power.
I read a lot of books about prosperity
and building your own wealth.” To
relax, Busi loves watching movies
and stories – especially those who
tell stories of people in Africa. “And of
course, I like sleep!” she giggles. “Sleep
does wonders. If I ever have a bad day
or things just don’t work out, I jump
into bed, sleep it off, and start over the
next day.”
Apart from her fashion empire, Busi
is also trying her hand at the world
of property. She is starting to build
her property portfolio in the housing
market, and is loving the newness of
this trade. “No magic ever happens
inside your comfort zone. You have to
motivate yourself to always try new
things.”
For Busi, hard work is (and has always
been) the start of all big things. This is a
lesson she’d like to teach her children.
“I want my children to know that they
can do anything that they put their
minds to. They can create something
from nothing. Prosperity and success
do not come from nothing. You have
to work for it.” She says her children
are accustomed to see their mother
working hard, but they should always
know that they, too, have to work hard
for their own future.
Leading by example
Busi also recently started the Ruby
Red Model Development Programme.
This programme is aimed at helping
girls and young women who worked
in the model industry regain their
true purpose in life. It is a professional
training academy for young females
aspiring to be models or fashionistas
from the previously disadvantaged
areas of the Mangaung Metro. The
programme will enrol the participants
for a period of 12 months where
they will be trained in different skills
set related to modelling and fashion
industry. The participants
enrolled in the programme
are trained in skills
such as Leadership,
Entrepreneurship,
Life Skills, Career
Development
and other
skills to
prepare them for a life after the
programme with the intention
of ensuring that they can stand
for themselves and avoid being
affected by negative socio-economic
challenges:
Details of this are on the Facebook
page: RubyRed
Model Development Programme.
Busi in a nutshell
Busi starts her day at 5am every day.
She leaves for the gym at 5:20 and
enjoys a full body exercise until 7am. “I
love to eat healthy foods… but don’t
get me wrong, I enjoy guilty pleasures
every now and again! I’m especially
crazy about Oreo McFlurry and potato
chips.”
Busi loves cooking and makes a
legendary biryani and curry dish.
She stays motivated by praying every
morning. “On my way to the gym, I
pray for strength, focus and courage.
Every single day. This way, I start my
day off right.”
One thing not a lot of people know
about Busi, is that she loves to dance.
“Oh, to jive… I love it!”
She offers motivational speeches
at events and sees her time with
other women as her way of uplifting
and inspiring girls of all ages and
backgrounds.
Be a superYOUevery day
Value. It’s what we all want out of life. It’s what we strive for day in, day out. Bloem life coach
Paolo Arcangeli has some great tips.
In some way or another, value is what
we desire from almost everyone and
everything that we come into contact
with. But, just as much as we desire to
receive value from others, the people in
our lives have an equal right and need
to receive great value from us.
The challenge comes into place when
we are so often faced with a multitude
of demands on our time, our effort and
our resources, that it becomes difficult
to see clearly or to even understand
how to go about giving the best
account of ourselves in every situation.
When this happens, it is easy to end
up short-changing both ourselves and
the people who rely on us, leaving us
feeling completely overwhelmed as we
strive to give every person and every
aspect of our lives the attention they
deserve.
The truth of the situation is that despite
what can seem like great external
pressures bearing down on us, much of
the anxiety and stress that we feel are
not caused by outside factors at all, but
rather by our own misunderstanding
of what our value is and how best to
maximise it to its full potential in order
to attain the results we wish to achieve.
Whether it’s at home, at work, or in
our relationships, everything we do
holds value. When we learn to better
understand that value – our value – we
can begin to build on it and grow it.
We can then achieve truly remarkable
results, as our results in life are directly
proportionate to the value we offer.
Knowing this, it becomes evident that
we should all strive to take ownership
of our value each and every day.
But, before we can do that, let’s first
discuss just what value actually is and
what it means to you.
Firstly, your value is not determined by
self-worth in any way, and nor is your
self-worth determined by your value.
Your worth is solely determined by your
very existence, and is given to you by
God, who loved you even before you
were born into this world. Yes, you are
priceless.
Your value is determined by the
usefulness of your actions and how
they affect others.
True value lies in the act of giving,
as no matter how skilled or gifted or
competent or lovely or beautiful or
profound someone or something is,
nothing can hold any value at all unless
it is shared with others. The value that
we hold is found entirely in the sharing
of our goodness with those around
us and the world at large, because the
value isn’t directly in the giving, but in
the receiving. To understand what your
true value is, don’t just look at what
you’re giving someone else, but strive
to understand what it is that they are
receiving.
We all take on multiple roles as we strive
to balance our careers, family time,
romantic relationships, personal time,
spiritual growth and development,
as well as leisure time, so we need to
understand the value that is expected
of us in each area of our lives, and in
each role that we play.
For example, a builder doesn’t just build
a house, but creates a home for people.
The value he offers is safety, security, a
sense of stability and comfort.
A teacher doesn’t just read text books,
but she opens the minds of her
students to a world of possibilities. The
value that she offers is enlightenment,
knowledge and endless possibilities.
A mother doesn’t just make a home
for her family, but provides them with
safety, confidence and love. The value
that she offers is love and care, and a
sense of belonging.
So, now that we understand what value
is, how do we identify what our value is
and how do we take ownership of it?
This is actually a lot simpler than
you may think, and it all starts with
answering the following three
questions.
Are you a parent? A spouse?
A business owner? A leader?
A friend? A motivator? A
What is the value
I need to offer
in each of the
play in my life?
Remember, the value that
simply your actions or
lies in the benefit that others receive
three simple questions each day, you will
not only gain a thorough understanding
of what your unique value offering truly
is, but you will also be able to grow your
value and influence exponentially, giving
you greater means to be the best
you that you can be.
Beat
the PMS
monster
PMS. That time of the month. Menstrual cycle. These are curse words for so many of us, for
so many terrible reasons. Science actually shows us that there ARE things we can do to kick
the nasty side effects in the butt.
Calcium levels drop
Approximately ten days prior to menstruation, when your
ovaries are least active, your blood calcium drops steadily
and progressively. This can result in premenstrual tension,
nervousness, headaches, insomnia, and mental depression.
Because the decreased blood calcium acts as a stress, the
production of certain hormones is stimulated and salt
and water can be retained in your body, often causing
breasts, hands, face, and feet to swell, increase in weight
(sob), headaches, resistance to allergies and infections
to decrease markedly. (Interesting point is that crimes of
violence committed by women take place mostly during
this period – which shows how badly some girls or women
are affected by PMS.)
The first day of menstruation your blood calcium takes
a still greater nose dive, causing muscle cramps in your
emptying uterus and sometimes elsewhere in your body.
Here’s what you can do
Should your blood calcium drop dangerously low,
convulsions can result. Yet, if adequate calcium is obtained
and efficiently absorbed, both premenstrual tension and
menstrual cramps can be prevented.
During menopause, the lack of ovarian hormones causes
severe calcium deficiency symptoms to occur. When this
happens, large amounts of calcium should be taken, which
will help reduce irritability, hot flashes, night sweats, leg
cramps as well as mental depression.
Even after a woman no longer menstruates, there is often
one week in a month when she might have a pseudomenstrual
cycle and calcium-deficiency symptoms can be
particularly noticeable at such times. It would be wise to
increase the calcium intake.
It is important to note that calcium should not be taken
without its balancing partner, magnesium, in a 2:1 ratio
along with some form of acid such as apple cider vinegar
or vitamin C. This is because calcium and magnesium are
both alkaline and need to have the “acid” to bring it to the
correct pH so the body can absorb it.
This is even more vital if stomach acid is low or poor.
Eating excess sugar or refined carbohydrates alkalizes the
digestive system and prevents absorption of most minerals
and can actually lead to acid reflux, strange as it may seem.
It is important to note that non-optimum symptoms in
the body do not usually show for a deficiency of only one
nutrient but many, even if only one or two are manifesting.
A truly healthy body will not have symptoms.
Believe it or not, it is possible for menstruation and
menopause to be uneventful. We were not designed to
suffer.
Getting corrections done is simply finding the right
solution. Don’t despair, it can be resolved. In order for your
body to absorb calcium, it needs magnesium in a 2:1 ratio
and vitamin C to create the correct pH so that your body
can absorb it speedily. If you don’t get the pH right, the
calcium can deposit in unwanted places.
From drab to oh-so-fab
Sure, chalk paint is a thing. But there’s a new kid on the block in the world of DIY décor.
Mixx it up
Adding a dash of texture and colour to
a tired, old piece of furniture is just what
Doctor Décor ordered. Say hello to Mixx
Cement.
It’s not your average DIY product. Mixx
is a versatile do-it-yourself cement
based thin film coating. It’s available
in 36 stunning colours, and can be
applied to various surfaces, using
three different techniques. The most
common technique is trowelling, but
you can also do things like dip, pour
or paint. Many different stylish
effects can be achieved using
variants of these techniques.
Upcycle old bottles,
furniture or even
kitchen tops. You can
create lovely feature
walls, upgrade your
floors and undertake
many more fabulous
projects to create a
beautiful space in your
home or at work.
Because cement is
usually so complex to
use, the developers of
Mixx Cement have
designed it in such a
way that we eradicate
the complexities of
cement and make it
absolutely user friendly
and simple to master.
Good old chalk paint
Yes, we’ve seen Annie Sloan Chalk
Paint everywhere and we know how
beautifully it can take an item from
drab to fab. But we’re still raving about
it. The Studio in Bloemfontein offers
regular workshops on ways to use the
chalk paint, now together with the Mixx
Cement. Double trouble!
Annie Sloan developed her
revolutionary decorative paint over
29 years ago, and decorative painting
hasn’t been the same since. With its
remarkable versatility and ease of use
– for the DIY enthusiast as well as the
professional painter. It’s super easy
to use – it very rarely requires any
preparation, such as sanding
or priming, and you can use
it indoors or outside, on just
about any surface – from wood
to metal, and matte plastic to terracotta.
It can revitalise tired old furniture, walls,
ceilings and floors with ease, and it’s
easy, fun, and makes amazing results
accessible to everyone.
Annie Sloan products contain no lead
and has no odour. Break the rules, use
different mediums and be amazed at
what your inner creative force can do!
The trends
The trend nowadays in the Annie Sloan
world is two colour distressing, rustic
look, Ombre, simple vintage look and a
smooth modern finish.
There’s also fresh emphasis on natural
elements. We’re stepping away from
the tech-obsessed décor trends that
we saw dominate the 2018 design
trends. In 2019, we move towards
fresh, natural materials such as stone,
copper, concrete, and granite.
These elements will help
bring an organic and
serene ambiance to any
space while reflecting
the world around your
home. With the Mixx
Cement and
earthy coloured
chalk paint,
you can create a
beautifully natural
environment in you
home.
pruning
August is the perfect time to start tending to your rose garden. No idea how to
prune your roses? Andri Barnard from Garden Solutions Nursery breaks it down.
30 Get It Bloemfontein August 2019 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Keeping a rose garden should be stress free for you to enjoy the magical colours
and by following some easy steps it can be so for even the beginner gardener. A
healthy rose garden needs proper pruning.
Pruning roses in our area should rather be left till late August as frost can damage
new stems. If you wanted to move some bushes this would be the best time to
do so.
Leaves. Remove all leaves so that you can clearly see your plant – it also helps to
remove remaining pests.
Hygiene. Make sure your pruning scissors are clean and sharp. Always cut straight
90 degree angles.
Out and about. What you really want is to keep is the upward and outward
growing branches, growing away from the centre of the plant, leaving the middle
of the plant in a ‘bowl’ shape. Remove overlapping branches as they tend to
cause friction wounds.
Green is good. Remove all dead branches, cutting them off at the base – keep
the live green ones.
Height. Trim bushes using a basic measuring pole to keep the height consistent
in your garden. Landscape roses can be pruned to about half their height, older
plants can be trimmed as much as two thirds. But don’t worry, they grow back
vigorously in spring. With climbing roses the same rules basically apply, except
don’t cut your main stems leading from the plant. Standard roses can be treated
as bushes, except don’t use the same measuring pole…
Sealing. As with any open wound, sealing your cut stem helps prevent fungus
from growing – ask at your local hardware store.
Feed me. Roses love good nutrition – however, wait until early spring and
especially keep it up during the hot months.
Air. After pruning, aerate the soil to allow nutrients to penetrate better and roots
to grow deeper.
Pesticides. It is not necessary to spray after pruning, however, keep a watchful
eye during the hotter months.
Hybrid teas, floribundas, Fairy Tale, Panarosa, Antico Moderno, spire and miniature
roses can all be pruned using the method demonstrated here. The same principle
applies to standard roses where it’s also important to remove suckers growing
from the foot of the main stem.
Salomé Reizis staan haar (hoëhak)skoene vol in ‘n wêreld wat
haar eie eiendomsportefeulje.
Chancellor Justice Mahube Molemela
Justice Mahube Molemela has an
extremely long list of achievements
and credentials, but she takes pride in
having her roots are deeply buried in
her community in
Bloemfontein.
She matriculated in
Thaba ‘Nchu in 1981,
and today she is the chancellor of
the central university of technology
(cut). She made history by becoming
the first female Chancellor of the CuT
in 2016. Furthermore, she also smashed
glass ceilings when she was the first
female Judge President of the Free State
Division of the High Court of South
Africa.
Her superpower:
Passion for achievement of justice
Her current work as a Judge of Appeal
means that her responsibilities are to
consider appeals against judgments
of the High Court as part of a panel of
Judges, and to write judgments.
The enormity of her work and the
widespread impact thereof often hits
home with Justice Mahube, and she is
constantly reminded of why she adores
her career. “The judiciary is often referred
to as the last bastion of democracy, and
rightly so. Without independent judges,
there would be no democracy to talk
about and this is the case worldwide.
“This critical role in the sustenance of
democracy makes this demanding
position (being a judge) one of the
best jobs in the world, in my view.” She
believes that her deeply-seated passion
for the achievement of justice is her
main driving force.
Justice Mahube has always had a
hunger to know more, which was
instilled in her by her parents. “My
parents taught me that education is the
key to success. I try to live my life by it.”
She completed numerous degrees in
her years of study, starting in 1982 at the
university of Fort Hare, and completing
an LLB at the university of the Free
State. In 1996, she attended a course in
Human Rights in Denmark, offered by
the Danish Centre for Human Rights.
In 2000, she attained a post graduate
Diploma in Business Management
from Buckinghamshire
university. Her legal
career commenced
in 1987 with her
appointment as prosecutor at the
Thaba ’Nchu Magistrate’s Court. She
was admitted as attorney in 1993, and
as conveyancer and notary in 1996. Fast
forward many years and achievements
later, in addition to practising as
attorney, notary and conveyancer,
she served as commissioner at
the Commission for Conciliation,
Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
She was also a part-time lecturer at
the uFS for a period of two years,
and served on a number of boards,
including that of chairperson of Centlec
and a provincial board-member of
ABSA Bank.
Her list of degrees and
achievements is extremely
long, but this does not stop
her from achieving even
more dreams for herself,
and the legal justice
system in SA. Since her
appointment at the CuT,
Justice Mahube and
the vice-chancellor
and principal had
several engagements
with the chancellors
of the uFS and Sol
Plaatje universities,
with the intention
to strengthen
collaboration
between the
three universities.
Furthermore, her
involvement in
empowering farm workers
and upcoming farmers
through The Free State
Rural Development
Association is one of
initiatives that bears
testament to her good
record of personal
support to worthy
causes in society.
When she steps outside her office
and the courtroom, Justice Mahube
fills numerous other important roles
in her life, including that of mother,
wife, sister, mentor, member of a
women’s group and a board member
of a non-profit organisation. She and
her husband, Sello Molemela, have
two sons, Moeketsi and Moeletsi. Her
hobbies include travelling, jogging,
hiking, movies, theatre and listening to
jazz music. She also loves reading, and is
currently engaged in the motivational
autobiography penned by
her predecessor, retired
Justice Thekiso Musi. The
title is A Dream Believed, a
PROMOTION
Ntombizanele Beauty Sifuba
Ntombizanele is a teacher, mother,
activist and adventure seeker. But
above all, she is an activist. As the
newly, unopposed elected Speaker
of the Free State Legislature,
Ntombizanele is a lover of education
and stands firm for what she believes
in. She is among many vibrant female
legislators in our province, to which
we say YES!
The Member of the Executive Council
for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam
Mashinini, remarked to the media
shortly after Ntombizanele’s election:
“She is calm, immersed and easy
going, but make no mistake, she is
very firm.”
Ntombizanele is a
product of the working
class movement and
has been active within
the education sector
within the province.
Between 1999 and 2019,
she enjoyed her job
as a teacher in various
schools such as Letjhabile
Adult School, Letsete
Secondary School and
Bambanani ABET Centre. It is during
this period that she was able to, in
a consummate style, manage to
silently craft an immeasurable political
growth within the South African
Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU)
in the Free State. As a representative
and shop steward of the SADTU, she
is credited with helping to maintain
labour peace in our schools. This
attribute is very important to the
education sector because it ensures
that the culture of learning and
teaching is maintained at all times.
Recently she worked as Deputy
Director responsible for Monitoring
and Evaluation in the Department
of Social Development, which
further wired her understanding of
government operations. She has also
held many political roles in the past
and in 1995 she has already served
as the Deputy Secretary of the ANC
in the President Steyn Branch in
Welkom.
She later served as a Branch
Chairperson, Member of the
Provincial Executive Committee,
Provincial Treasurer, Provincial Deputy
Secretary of SADTU, Provincial Deputy
Chairperson of COSATU, and a
Member of the Provincial Executive.
She is currently also serving as
member of the ANC Subcommittees
on Economic Development as well as
Gender and Equity.
Her superpower:
A firm and
exceptional educator
True to her industrious and
resourceful nature of immersed
expertise, she is also the Chairperson
of the Free State Safety and Security
Sector Bargaining Chamber (FS-
SSSBC). In a nutshell, one can be
allowed to say that Ntombizanele’s
election as the Speaker of the
Legislature is just what the doctor
ordered, and came at exactly the right
time. Public institutions such as the
Free State Legislature require sound
and thought leadership and from the
paper, the new Speaker cannot be
faltered.
Ntombizanele’s adoration for
education is self-expressed in
her insistent drive to pursue one
qualification after another. She holds
a Bachelor of Arts in Education from
Vista University (1998), Bachelor of
Psychology from Central University
of Technology (2009), Postgraduate
Diploma (2017) in Governance
and Political Transformation and is
currently pursuing a Master’s Degree
in the same field from the University
of Free State.
She is a disciplinarian who has
developed disciplinary codes and
overseen disciplinary proceedings.
She is well-rounded, passionate about
labour matters and an outstanding
negotiator. These attributes go a long
way in building a solid relationship
between the Executive Authority,
the Management and
the Workers’ Union in the
Legislature.
Her predecessor, Mamiki
Qabathe, recently delivered
a warm account of
Ntombizanele: “A dedicated
worker, leader, shop steward
and a passionate educator.
A leader of the ANC who
has given everything to help
resolve the challenges faced
by our structures.”
When Ntombizanele is at home,
she loves being a mother to her
three beautiful daughters. Her eldest
daughter, Sisipho Ngwenyana, says:
“My mom would always give to
people even when we had almost
nothing to give”. That account
alone surmised a spiritual forte and
luminaire associated with mothers in
African societies.
She is a very strong advocate
for violence against women
and children and fights for the
rights of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual,
Transgender, Questioning and
Intersex (LGBTIQ) communities. This
kind of courage is commensurate
to the direction our country is now
taking towards renewal and growth.
It gives the legislature an even better
and empathetic atmosphere towards
serving its people with humility.
The Secretary to the Legislature, Thabo
Mofokeng, added his remarks: “We are
looking forward to working with the
new Speaker; we are ready and will hit
the ground running. From our recent
interface, I am happy about how the
Speaker managed to transmit the
amount of issues we’ve already placed
before her.”
During the Get It Women on the
Move Breakfast held in June this year,
Ntombizanele delivered a speech in
which she encouraged women in the
Free State to support one another. “If
we as women uplift each other more,
we can make tremendous progress
as a whole in the province. I believe
we as women have what it takes to
turn a society around. We are excellent
multitaskers. We’re not just mothers or
wives, we can fill many roles in a single
day.”
The Free State Legislature and its entire
staff welcomes Hon. Sifuba and her
team of legislators and wish them all
the best.

Sisi Ntombela
Sefore Hixsonia Ntombela
advocates for cases that truly
matter because she knows the
depth of struggle for thousands
of people in the Free State. She
was elected Premier of the Free
State on March 27, 2018.
Sisi was born as one of six
children in the small farming
town of Tweeling in the Free
State. She was given the
nickname of “Sisi” at a young
Her superpower:
Compassion
age. She
attended
the
Tweeling
Combined School and
matriculated from Kganyeng
Secondary School. She went on
to study at Bonamelo Training
College in Qwaqwa and returned to
the Tweeling Combined School as a
teacher.
After a five-year period of teaching,
she joined the Department of Health
where she served as a health worker
for 12 years. Sisi then joined the then
Department of Welfare as a Community
Developer for a period of four years.
Her brief but impactful spell at the
Department of Welfare stimulated
a deep sense of compassion in the
Premier, in those early years indeed
an indication that she was a person
occupied with the advancement of
human potential and the alleviation
of the plight of the weak and
marginalised. “It is during this time
that I interacted, almost daily, with the
masses of our people. I found a new
appreciation for their struggles – be
it illness, poverty or unemployment,”
reflects the Premier.
Having had first-hand experience of the
suffering of the people, she became
an active participant in a number of
projects designed to improve the
lives of the people. She also led a
number of initiatives which aimed at
the upliftment of the community of
Mafahlaneng, Tweeling.
Her selfless efforts did not go unnoticed
and it came as no surprise that the
African National Congress deployed her
to serve in various capacities of public
leadership:
With only a dream and heaps of enthusiasm, Lida
started her own printing and branding company from
her garage back in 1996. Over the years it has grown
in leaps and bounds to where it is today – a successful
extended family business that has earned the absolute
trust and respect from her clients.
Maybe one of the most important aspects of her
business is that Lida, with her background of social
work, values people more than numbers. This has
been a huge contributor to her success. “Don’t get me
wrong – no business can survive without a good, steady
income, but we value our clients and their loyalty above
all else.
“We depend on building an emotional bond with our
clients and being transparent. My job is to ensure that
we treasure this culture and never take it for granted. In
our office, we have fun, we are a family and we function
as a unit – making our clients part of our family.”
Lida’s company has a broad client base in Central South
Africa. The business focuses on building brands, which
includes supplying and printing of corporate clothing,
T-shirts, corporate gifts, signage and banners.
One of the biggest challenges for Lida over the years
has been balancing her world between her two
children’s school activities, being part of a family, being
a daughter, sister, friend, financial manager, quality
controller, buyer, seller and oh, so many different things
at once. One thing that Lida does exceptionally well is
to really listen to others. “I often experience that a client
has needs; not only ‘business-needs’ but personal needs.
Through years, my clients, old and new, grew to trust me
with both. I value that and keep it close to my heart. In
my view, that is what sets us apart from a big corporate
company.”
Her mantra in business, and in
life, is: “All moments are key
moments, and life itself is Grace!
By Grace, I am!”
the one hand and senior management on the other hand, she
has to be on her A-game every day. “Being located between
these two worlds requires a constant balancing act. Every day
is packed full of meetings and requires a great deal of mental
gymnastics to keep up with the information and decisionmaking
overload.”
Having said that, the flipside of information overload is being
able to have a chopper view of not only the bigger picture but
also the inner workings of the faculty, which bring her loads of
excitement and reward.
Prof. Heidi is excellent in building relationships and networking
internationally. She uses this strength to connect people in
her faculty with those of high influence. “I am also extremely
patient and resilient – and I think this is a good quality to have
to help boost morale, especially in a very complex and fastpaced
higher education environment.”
Outside of her role as Dean, Prof.
Heidi is the proud wife of a very
supportive and involved
husband, and mother to
a fiercely independent
daughter.
The biggest lesson her
parents taught her: “Do
not live by comparison,
just do your own thing.
And it’s okay to roll your
eyes…”
Prof. Brownhilder
Her superpower: Leading by example
As the Associate Professor and Academic Chair (HOD) at
the department of Business management of the uFS,
Prof. Brownhilder never experiences a dull day in her life.
Living out her passion within the world of academics
and business, her responsibilities at the department are
twofold: “The first is my academic responsibilities which
focus on teaching, postgraduate student supervision,
and research. The second is my leadership and
administrative responsibilities.”
She provides leadership towards attaining the
highest possible level of quality in the teaching and
research activities of the department and influencing
the department’s overall climate and culture. She’s
also responsible for budget planning, determining
expenditure priorities, skills development management
and the general day to day running of the department.
She does all this gracefully, while filling her role as mother
and wife when she’s at home. “I have a beautiful daughter,
Zina Beri. I’m also a Sunday school teacher, friend and
confidant.”
Prof. Brownhilder enjoys the fact that she can make a
big difference in the lives of students, helping to find
solutions to real-world problems through research. “I
put more than 100% into everything I do. I believe that
as an Academic Chair, I must lead by example. As such,
I continuously strive for excellence in teaching and
research.
The lessons her parents taught her have contributed to
the high levels of success that she has achieved in her
career thus far. “They’ve taught me to always remember
to pray, be truthful, be consistent in whatever I do, and
that family is important. I will never forget my roots.”
Martie Miranda
Martie’s entire life has been dedicated to campaign for the
inclusion of people with disabilities into so-called “normal”
society. Martie now heads the centre for universal access
and disability Support (cuadS) at the uFS, and lives out her
passion every day.
“I manage CuADS as a support service to students with
disabilities on all three campuses of the uFS. I am also
responsible for institution-wide consultation, I advise all
departments and divisions of the uFS with regard to any
disability-related matters and universal access in order for the
uFS to transform into an institution which is embracing and
welcoming to students with disabilities.”
While this is a mouthful, working with persons with disabilities
brings Martie endless joy. “I am inspired every day by persons
with disabilities who succeed to become independent
and who prove that nothing is impossible.” She’s constantly
challenged by changing attitudes, perceptions and stigma
regarding persons with disabilities, while she knows of so many
who have proven themselves as able to achieve wonderful
things.
“I am a firm believer that any challenge I’m confronted with
is an opportunity to change or to do things differently. I have
experienced being treated differently, because as a child of
Deaf adults (CODA), my first language is South African Sign
Language. Being the bridge between the hearing and the deaf
world of my parents in a stigmatising society, I have insight in
the daily struggles of persons with disabilities.”
Outside her office hours, Martie is a committed friend, flexible
with her time and always up for an impulsive road trip or event.
Her parents have taught her to always
appreciate what she has, and
that every human has a story
to tell.
Shindre-lee
Simmons
This dynamic student of the uFS is definitely not built for an
office chair. She’s in her happy place outside on the hockey
field – that’s why she’s the captain of the Kovsie Ladies’ first
hockey team.
“It’s my responsibility to lead my team diligently to reach their
individual goals as well as the team’s goals and aspirations. “I
have been entrusted to support my team and through this
create a link between the team and management.””
As a lover of all things action-packed and adrenalin-filled,
taking on the leading role of such a talented team of players
is a dream come true for Shindre-lee. “Not only do I get
the amazing opportunity to lead my team to and through
victories – my team
Her superpower:
Hard work and consistency
and I also form an
unbreakable bond
and friendship with
people from different backgrounds and places. We work
tirelessly through difficult trials, allowing us to reap our
rewards with humility and gratitude.” She adds that without
trust, there is no team. “It’s definitely one of the biggest and
most impactful things in a team.”
Shindre-lee regards herself as an exceptionally hard worker
(early mornings and late evenings of physical training and
practice do not always come easy!) and maintains a positive
attitude towards her life and goals. “This all is made possible
through continious support from team members, my parents,
friends and family.”
Aside from being team captain, Shindre-lee also enjoys
outdoor activities with friends, reading a good book and
coaching hockey at several girls’ schools in Bloem.
communication skills and her outgoing personality to
make the workplace a place where people WANT to be.
When Abet is not at the office, she comfortably fits into
the roles of mother, daughter, sister and friend. “I have
Desiree van Schalkwyk
This bubbly blonde is an inspiring
example of a dynamic woman who
has risen above her circumstances to
become a shining light wherever she
goes. Desiree van Schalkwyk is a sales
associate at Remax First, and considers
herself not as working for Remax, but
being empowered by Remax!
“Working in real estate is more than
just acquiring houses to list and then
selling them again. The moment that I
meet with a client, be it buyer or seller,
I want to make sure that I make a true
connection with them. I love people
and wisdom
Her superpower:
LOVE
has led me to
understand that
there are many
points of contact
and emotions involved in buying a
property.”
Desiree recognises the fact that she is
not merely an agent, but fulfils many
roles in her career. “I am a comforter
when my clients are overcome
with emotions; I work with them
through their finances and make
sure they get pre-qualified; I am
an interior designer in helping
the vision of a house realise into
a home. When you are an agent
you wake up every morning
‘technically’ without a job and
then in one day you become all
these personalities.”
For Desiree, there are no words
to describe the pure joy she
derives from her career path. “I
was created by God to do this – I
love selling homes.” Life was hard
for Desiree growing up. She lived
in a caravan with her parents and
five siblings, and when she was still
very young, her parents abandoned
them. “We were left homeless, and
that’s why I have a passion for selling
homes. I know what it feels like to be
without one. I pray for every single
property that I deal with. Sometimes, it
hits me hard when the sale of a house
is unsuccessful for some reason, as I’m
touched by it on a personal level.”
Knowing what she is capable of and
where she finds her strength, Desiree
faces daily challenges of keeping all
the balls in the air. But she does so with
grace and an enormous smile on her
beautiful face. “I work from dawn till dusk
as there are no set times for agents. I
have to deal with different elements in
the buying and selling process, while
connecting with my clients and realising
that each of them is on a different
spiritual path in his or her life. I always
try to leave someone happier and more
fulfilled than when I first met them.”
In her work and
personal life,
Desiree’s
biggest
mission is to spread love and kindness.
Through many ups and downs in her
life, she has experienced how God has
coloured in her life with his grace. “He
has filled me with LOVE. I therefor go
the extra mile for my clients and my
family, and I do so with His love. At the
end of the day, I want my clients to trust
me with their homes, finances, and
families, and know that I will always be
transparent and honest.”
When Desiree takes a break from
work, she loves to hibernate at home,
spending time with her children, Lumé
and Dihan. “I simply adore
them and cherish the time
that I have with them. My
partner, Marc, is like no other
person I have ever met. We
have an amazing connection.”
Although Desiree doesn’t
remember much of her
parents, she recalls her
mother always telling them
never to lie. This lesson she
took with her throughout
her years in the orphanage
and her adulthood. “I always
strive to be an honest and
reliable person. If you work
with passion, your work will
become your passion.”
“And remember, you
can create your own
happiness. Darkness
is just an illusion –
everything is temporary,
so let your presence be
like a sweet aroma you
share wherever you go.”
BEST OF BLOEMFONTEIN
Are you Bloem’s BEST?
The pressure is real, and the competition is strong. In this year’s Best of Bloemfontein Readers’
Choice Awards, we aim to name Bloem’s best businesses, products and service providers - big and
small - as identified by YOU!
It’s important for us to support
businesses in our communities.
When we support local, we build
our economy, and as a society, we
thrive. The 2019 Best of Bloemfontein
a golden opportunity for you, the
best in the different categories. Let’s
build each other up, and give a pat on
the back where it’s due!
Something for
everyone
When it comes to good quality products and services, Bloemfontein doesn’t have to
bow down to any other city in the country. This is quite evident from the thousands of
entries that Bloemfontein Courant receives annually for its popular Best of Bloemfontein
Readers’ Choice Awards. These awards offer a unique opportunity to residents in the
City of Roses to vote for their favourite businesses based on their experience with these
businesses in terms of service and product quality. There are numerous categories
consumers can vote in, such as Best Restaurant, Best Butchery, among others. Over the
years the competition has proven to be extremely popular with both consumers and
business people. The winning business in each category is presented with a Certificate
of Merit, which it can display inside its business. The winners are announced in a special
supplement in Bloemfontein Courant at the end of the competition.
Remember,
when you write
down your favourite
on the www.
important to name
the entire business,
of it. For example,
The Best of Bloemfontein Readers’ Choice Awards 2019 has
kicked off on 25 July 2019, with residents once again having
the chance to identify their favourite businesses around the
City of Roses. Online voting will be taking place for a limited
time after www.bestofbloemfontein.co.za has gone live on the
kick-off date. Voters can vote until 6 September 2019.
The awards are described by Sales
Manager at Mahareng, Corni Fourie,
as a great way for readers to show
appreciation for local businesses.
Emerging businesses will, of course,
also gain exposure. “Why would you not
want anybody to know that you found
this amazing place around the corner?
That is what makes Bloemfontein great.
The local economy is important to us,
so these awards are a way to drive it,”
BLOEMFONTEIN COURANT READERS’CHOICE AWARDS 2019
The Best of Bloemfontein Readers’ Choice Awards
is a true reflection of the shops, events and services
that Bloemfontein people love. “These awards are the
only chance you have to give back to the businesses
you buy from and visit frequently. Also, in terms of
business, people would not necessarily vote for those
not offering good service,” says Corni.
In 2018 the awards garnered a total of 122 000 votes
from locals, which resulted in winners from various
categories. “This year people have a variety of choices
as there will be seven voting ballot sections with a
total of 117 categories. This shows that people care
about boosting the businesses they like; votes have
increased from 18 000 in 2013 when the first Best of
Bloemfontein Readers’ Choice Awards was published,”
Corni says.
Voters have to complete 60% of their online ballots
in order for them to be valid. They can vote ten times
compared to only three times last year to improve
the winning chances of their favourite businesses.
“You can vote up to 10 times per ballot. The ballots
have many kinds of businesses, so you have to at least
vote for 60% of those businesses, otherwise your vote
will not qualify to determine the winner,” says Corni.
Votes will be audited once entries close at 12:00 on 6
September 2019.
The seven ballots include the following sections:
Living in Bloemfontein; Kids; Glam it Up; Shopping;
Dining Out; Eat, Drink, and Be Merry. The Eat, Drink
section has fifteen categories to choose from, while
Living in Bloemfontein has thirty-nine. Voters will be
able to type in the business of their choice on the
online ballot. Living in Bloemfontein has categories
that include Best Convenient Store; Best Local Hotel,
and Best Neighbourhood Forum, among others.
“You will have a space online to fill in the business’s
name in these categories. Voters have to fill in
the correct, full name of the business to prevent
confusion,” says Corni. The winners’ event, which
promises to be a glamorous affair, will take place on 17
October 2019.
The bragging rights that come with winning
at our annual Best of Bloemfontein Readers’
Choice Awards are an awesome pat on the
back for many who have won over the years.
The recognition that comes with getting
positive feedback from your customers and
community make providing great service
worthwhile.
Wilma Wessels, manager at Remax, who has won the award
for Best Selling and Letting Estate Agent in Bloemfontein six
years in a row, said the winning of such an award has been
beneficial. “We can’t put an amount on the value of winning
such an award. We do not want our opponents taking this
from us, thus we always provide the best service. We would
not like to lose that position in Bloemfontein. Remax is a
very well-known brand and the number one estate agency
internationally. In South Africa it’s number one, and in our
region as well. So it’s great for the Bloemfontein office to
boast such an accolade,” says Wilma.
Amanda van Litsenborgh, owner of LEjiT Lekker Restaurant,
which won in six categories last year, said that they were
speechless. “We couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t stop crying, it
was just…wow. We are excited about this year, and hope
that people who voted for us last year will do so again,”
Amanda says. LEjiT Lekker Restaurant received the awards
for: Best Beat-the-Budget (inexpensive) Restaurant; Best
Breakfast; Best Neighbourhood Restaurant; Best Restaurant
for a Business Lunch, and Best Spot to Head for Lunch.
Sanet Human, owner of Paw Park said that winning helped
their company become known and exposed them to
more customers. “It helped us a lot because a lot of people
voted for us and after people had seen the award on our
Facebook page, it has had a great impact on our growth.”
68 Get It Bloemfontein August 2019 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Reisigers: Barry en Hermien Pretorius, Hanneke en Christo Viljoen en… dr.
Livingstone.
Local is mos lekker.
by die huis.
af):
Dag 1: Petrusburg – Koffiefontein
– Luckhoff – Vanderkloofdam –
Orania – Hopetown – Strydenburg –
Sweetfontein (plaas tussen De Aar en
Britstown)
Dag 2: Britstown – Vosburg – Carnarvon
– Osfontein (plaas tussen Carnarvon en
Loxton)
Dag 3: Loxton – Fraserburg – Leeu
Gamka – Kruidfontein – Prince Albert.
Dag 4: De Rust – Willowmore –
Steytlerville – Ruigtefontein (plaas
tussen Steytlerville en Baroe)
Dag 5: Wolwefontein – Kirkwood –
Addo.
Dag 6: Paterson – Cookhouse –
Somerset-Oos – Pearston – Graaff-
Reinet – Nieu-Bethesda.
Dag 7: Middelburg – Noupoort –
Colesberg – Bloemfontein.
Die vyf van ons vertrek op Vrydag 19
April.
Daar is twee
in Addo.
Furrows Lodge in Nieu-Bethesda is ons laaste oorblyplek. Hier geniet ons unieke,
pragtige selfsorg-akkommodasie.
THE URBAN EDGE
ZEN X ATTITUDE
Inspired by one of the Zen aesthetics, Datsuzoku,
which breaks convention and routine. The Lexus
UX taillight is a horizontal continuum of seamless
illumination that extends from one end to another,
creating excellent visibility for added safety.
The advanced design is not only eye-catching
but also aerodynamically efficient. Proving that
everything we create can be traced back to a brave
idea, ultimately leading to a visionary future.
Christo: Osfontein was vir my baie spesiaal. Die mense se harte daar is so groot soos
Iemand het my eenmaal gevra: ‘Waar is Steylterville?’ Ek antwoord:
‘Dit is so 25 km anderkant Baroe. Maar waar is Baroe? Dit is so 25 km anderkant
Wolwefontein. Waar de hel is Wolwefontein?? So 5 km voor Kleinpoort.
August
A two-night stay for two
in the Natal Midlands
If you’re jolly lucky, you’ll have already visited Brahman Hills in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
This spot, in the 1000 hectare Blue Crane Reserve, has for a while been a top choice for weddings,
conferences and idyllic country escapes. Now the 4-star destination has just added a new option we can’t
wait to experience ... Springholm Cottages. Just four-and-a-half kms from the hotel, these cottages
are self-catering, but you’re close enough to the main venue to enjoy, if you wish, the extensive facilities
- we’re talking two great restaurants, two lovely chapels (the Glass Chapel overlooking a lake, and the
new Valley View Chapel, built partially underground), a purpose-built venue for conferences and private
functions, and a state-of-the-art spa (trust us, you’ll want to book something relaxing and pampering
here). If you can bear to leave, you can visit the Midlands Meander and the neighbouring The Windmills
Kitchen. Details: brahmanhills.co.za or 033-266-6965. We’re giving one reader the chance to take a partner
for a two-night, midweek break in one of these new self-catering Springholm Cottages at Brahman Hills.
The prize, on a bed-and-breakfast basis, includes a dinner at 89 on Copper. To enter, simply visit Get It
National Magazines on Facebook, like our Springholm Spoil post, and tag a friend. Entries close August 25.
