justice, the struggle for freedom and the<br />

The <strong>Nelson</strong> Amnesty group invites<br />
people in <strong>Nelson</strong> and area to join us in<br />
Amnesty International’s annual Write for<br />
Rights global letter-writing campaign,<br />
which this year focuses on situations<br />
where the rights of young people under<br />
the age of 25 are being violated as they take<br />
on some of the world’s greatest crises.<br />

November 19, 2019 at<br />
the age of 90 years.<br />

Survived by daughter Aurora (Bob) De Laurentiis; son<br />
Dino (Alice) De Laurentiis; grandchildren Dale (Alicia),<br />
Mike, Adam (Heather) Foyle, Keegan and Kiana De<br />
Laurentiis; great-grandchildren Nicole, Mitch (Montana)<br />
Foyle, Tyson, Dominic Foyle, Autumn Dodds-Foyle.<br />
Nikki cooked at Charlie’s Restaurant and River’s Cafe in<br />
<strong>Salmo</strong>, BC, owned and operated a restaurant in Vancouver,<br />
BC with her late husband in the early 1960s. She travelled<br />
to Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Florida, Las Vegas, Pennsylvania,<br />
New York, Reno, Bahamas, Mexico and Australia.<br />
Nicoletta belonged to the Lady Lions in <strong>Salmo</strong>, <strong>Salmo</strong><br />
Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and the <strong>Salmo</strong> Catholic Women’s<br />
League. Her hobbies and interests included gardening,<br />
homemaking, cooking, canning, baking, knitting<br />
and crocheting.<br />
Funeral Mass was held on Thursday November 28th at<br />
Immaculate Conception Church. Entombment was at<br />
the <strong>Nelson</strong> Memorial Cemetery, <strong>Nelson</strong>, BC on Friday<br />
November 29th.<br />
Special Thank You to family and friends for your visits<br />
and support when mom became ill as well as your<br />
kind words and expressions of sympathy during this<br />
sad time.<br />
Thank you also for the cards, flowers, food and calls,<br />
your kindness and generosity has been comforting.<br />

With a Canada-USA review of<br />
Columbia River Treaty terms now<br />
underway, the opportunity is ripe<br />
for seriously exploring large-scale<br />
projects to recover at least some of<br />
enormous ecological disruption that<br />
the Treaty dams caused. For example,<br />
a determined effort, largely spearheaded<br />
by Indigenous peoples, is<br />
well underway to bring back to the<br />
upper reaches of the Columbia the<br />
oceangoing salmon that spawned<br />
here prior to the construction of<br />
obstructing dams.<br />
People who reside in the Kootenay<br />
and Duncan Lake area wonder<br />
whether the time is right also<br />
to lobby for a fish passage over our<br />
local Duncan Dam <strong>–</strong> the first dam to<br />
be constructed after the Treaty was<br />
signed in 1961.<br />
In this slide-talk, Peter Jonker of<br />
Friends of the Lardeau River, will help<br />
us learn about ecological conditions<br />
that existed prior to Duncan Dam; in<br />
what ways the Dam profoundly disrupted<br />
these ecological conditions;<br />
how this affected key fish species<br />
and, whether/how a year-round fish<br />
passage over the Duncan Dam would<br />
help reverse at least some of the damage<br />
that was done. This presentation<br />
will be held on Tuesday, <strong>Dec</strong>ember<br />
10 at the Lardeau Valley Community<br />
Club Hall in Meadow Creek.<br />

Used oil recycling facility<br />
officially opens in <strong>Nelson</strong><br />
BC Used Oil Management Association<br />
(BCUOMA), a not-for-profit<br />
group dedicated to the collection and<br />
recycling of lubricating oil, oil filters,<br />
oil containers, antifreeze and antifreeze<br />
containers in British Columbia,<br />
today announced that the <strong>Nelson</strong><br />
Leafs Bottle Depot located at 120 Silica<br />
Street in <strong>Nelson</strong> will now be responsibly<br />
collecting, storing and handling<br />
used oil and antifreeze materials, yearround.<br />
The new infrastructure that has<br />
been installed will provide the residents<br />
of <strong>Nelson</strong> and those in the surrounding<br />
areas, with an easy, free and<br />
eco-friendly way to recycle used oil,<br />
antifreeze, filters and containers.<br />
The Return Collection Facility (RCF)<br />
infrastructure grant that <strong>Nelson</strong> Leafs<br />
Bottle Depot received from BCUOMA<br />
provided them with a modified sea<br />
container to facilitate the responsible<br />
collection and management of used<br />
oil, antifreeze, filters and containers.<br />
“<strong>Nelson</strong> has grown tremendously<br />
over the past several years and the <strong>Nelson</strong><br />
Leafs Bottle Depot recognized the<br />
need to provide a used oil recycling<br />
facility to their clients in order to meet<br />
the demands of the growing population,”<br />
said David Lawes, executive<br />
director, BC Used Oil Management<br />
Association. “The annual roundup<br />
events were met with such a positive<br />
response that <strong>Nelson</strong> Leafs Bottle<br />
Depot felt it was important for the residents<br />
of <strong>Nelson</strong> to have a year-round<br />
convenient, free and easy facility to<br />
recycle their used oil and antifreeze<br />
materials.”<br />
BCUOMA’s RCF infrastructure<br />
grant program’s purpose is to ensure<br />
that there are sufficient RCFs across<br />
British Columbia for DIY consumers<br />
to take back their used oil and antifreeze<br />
materials for processing at no<br />
charge to consumers. The program<br />
also requires the responsible environmental<br />
handling, collection, transportation,<br />
storage, processing and<br />
recycling of used oil and antifreeze<br />
material using economic, efficient and<br />
environmentally acceptable options.<br />
BCUOMA has also created more<br />
signage at BC used oil recycling centres<br />
that explains how easy it is to<br />
recycle materials properly. Municipalities,<br />
private businesses, nonprofit<br />
organizations, and other sectors interested<br />
in BCUOMA’s RCF new infrastructure<br />
grants can find out more<br />

Used oil is a valuable resource and<br />
there is a market for used oil. If it is<br />
recycled at a BC used oil recycling<br />
centre, it can be recovered and reused.<br />
Used oil can be re-refined into new<br />
lubricating oil and used as a fuel in<br />
pulp mills, cement plants and asphalt<br />
plants. Any vehicle maintenance facilities,<br />
automobile owners and other<br />
machinery maintenance operations<br />
that use oil also can use re-refined<br />
oil. Additionally, used oil filters contain<br />
reusable scrap metal, which steel<br />
producers can reuse for metal products<br />
like rebar, nails and wire. Used<br />
antifreeze can be reprocessed to produce<br />
new automotive antifreeze. Plastic<br />
oil and antifreeze containers can<br />
be recycled into new oil containers,<br />
flowerpots, pipe, guardrails and patio<br />
furniture.<br />
Each year, approximately 50 million<br />
litres of oil and three million litres of<br />
antifreeze are collected and responsibly<br />
managed through the approximately<br />
300 public collection facilities<br />
and over 4,000 generators across the<br />
province, which are managed by the<br />
BCUOMA program.<br />
